Wauchope High School Newsletter
An important message from our Principal:
Dear Parents and Caregivers
We recognise that there are many concerns about the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation, particularly
the impact on your children, our students. Please be assured that the health and safety of the students
and staff at our school are our first priority.
In supporting you, our community and the frontline workers who are engaging in preventing the spread
of this virus and managing those who are becoming ill because of the virus, our school remains open. It
will continue to remain operational while ever we feel that it safe to do so and until directed to take
alternative actions by the Department of Education.
We are monitoring this situation daily and will communicate with you the minute this situation changes.
Please be assured that at this time our school is taking all measures possible to maintain a healthy
environment for students so that they may continue with their learning.
Please assist us by ensuring that:
If your child is unwell that you do not send them to school, that you notify us of the reason and
that you seek medical advice where appropriate.
If they are suspected of having contracted COVID-19 and have been placed in isolation by a
medical practitioner they are not to attend school. This may also apply to siblings.
The school needs to be immediately informed of any child placed in isolation by a medical
practitioner, any child who has been in close contact with a person confirmed to have contracted
COVID-19, or in close contact with any person directed to isolate pending being tested. For other
situations please contact the school for advice.
Our school remains open and continues to be a relatively safe place for children to be during the school
day. All students attending school will continue to be supported by staff in class in their learning. For
those students away for greater than 5 days with a confirmed illness – please contact the
school to make arrangements for work to be sent home.
Regards
Glen Sawle, Principal

2020 ANZAC Day Address Competition:
Honouring the ANZAC
spirit
This year’s theme for Anzac Day honours veterans and their families.
Interested students are required to compose a brief five-minute address themed - How my family has honoured the ANZAC spirit.
Describe (in a maximum of 400 words) how your family has honoured the ANZAC spirit in the various theatres of war or service since the First World War.
Competition closes Wednesday 25
March. Interested students should
see Mr Pinkerton or Mrs Quee in
the HSIE staffroom.
On Saturday the 14th of March, I competed in the Regional Lions Youth Of The Year. It started off with my interview, in front of a panel of 3 judges. This is where my application is discussed and expanded upon. I was
asked 3 general knowledge questions during this interview, regarding social media, nuclear energy and Australia’s biggest challenges in 2020. Later that day, I participated in the speech night. Delivering my prepared speech about
the domino effect drought has on the community, I also delivered two 2 minute impromptu speeches this night regarding the benefits of rural/urban areas, and whether I
consider myself a pessimist or an optimist. The other 4 contestants delivered incredible speeches, both in the prepared
and impromptu sections. Wauchope Lions Club was a great supporter, and by winning the competition, I now have the opportunity to represent our region at the district level at
Tamworth in the next few weeks. -Cameron Lloyd, Year 11

NETBALL NEWS
Wauchope High Netball has started well this season. The Open Girls travelled to Macksville in the new school bus
and christened it with victory.
This was the first two rounds of the NSWCHS knockout and Lower North Coast
Trials. First game of the day was against Melville High which was close but WHS
held on to win. This followed with round two against Nambucca and again a tight
contest but we were victorious. The rain made it too dangerous for possible
probables to be played but Emily and Abby were selected in the Lower North Coast
team. Kimberly made the shadow reserve
squad. These girls will trial in Coffs
Harbour in a couple of weeks for the
North Coast team. Congratulations to all
the girls who went away and represented Wauchope High with pride.
They were: Kimberly (c), Emily, Charli, Abby, Laicy, India, Courtney, Ella,
Ellie. Special mention to Kya and Phoebe who were super statisticians.
Wednesday night ladies competition has also started and WHS is being
represented well by Kya and Finlay, Ava, Summa, Regan, Nikita, Tegan,
Amarlie and Holly.
Schools Cup Netball will be in Port Macquarie on 20th March and Wauchope High will field 5 teams. We wish them well and thank older and past students for coming along to help umpire and manage teams. - Ms Broderick (coach)
KNOCKOUT TEAM
WEDNESDAY NIGHT TEAM
VOLLEYBALL ROUND 3
The first 3 rounds of the CHS knockout Volleyball were held at Wauchope stadium on Friday 13th March. The Open
boys’ team successfully progressed through these rounds defeating Westport and Melville High School. They will
play against Orara High School in Round 4 for a place in the CHS knockout finals series in July. The Girls team
unfortunately, went down to Camden Haven High school in a high quality match that was decided by just 2 points.
These teams will continue to train throughout 2020 as they hone their skills for Beach Volleyball in October.
Congratulations and good luck to the boys as they seek position at state.

Rocking the rock art
It was fantastic to see 52 of our year 10, 11 and
12 students take the opportunity to explore
what university is really like. Charles Sturt
University Explore Day involved the students
choosing and attending two university
workshops for the day. The students had
access to lecturers and current students who
provided information about university life in
general and all the services and support
offered by the staff at Charles Sturt University.
Thank you to all the students who attended
and represented the school with pride.
-Mark O’Brien (Relieving Careers Adviser)
UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE DEPARTMENT OF
RURAL HEALTH TAREE CAMPUS
Wauchope High School students experienced a
taste of the different health professions (Medicine,
Medical Radiation Science, Midwifery, Nursing,
Nutrition & Dietetics, Occupational Therapy,
Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Speech Pathology) at
the University of Newcastle Department of Rural
Health Taree Campus. Students had the opportunity
to investigate and participate in the hands on
workshops presented by the university. It was
fantastic to see our students taking an interest in a
career that is not only rewarding but also helps to
change and save lives. A special thank you to Karina
for organising the day as well as driving the
minibus.
Please be aware—Our school has been advised
there have recently been a number of diagnoses
of Scabies.
See below for information you may find helpful.
Scabies
Scabies are tiny mite creatures (bugs) that burrow under the skin causing intense itching and sometimes a rash. The rash is due to an allergic reaction to the mite. Scabies tends to be worse around wrists, armpits, buttocks, and the groin and between fingers and toes. Scabies is highly contagious and is passed from person to person through close skin contact. Infestation may also occur by sharing clothing, towels, and bedding. Symptoms usually appear two to six weeks after exposure. Scabies are easily treated with gentle scrubbing of the skin followed by drying and applying permethrin cream or lotion that you can buy from pharmacies. People who have had close contact with an infected child should be examined for infestation and be treated if necessary. Wash linen, towels and clothing worn in the past 2 days in hot water and detergent. Keep at home? Yes. Children should be excluded
until the day after appropriate treatment has
started. More information See website:
