It is hard to believe that it is already June and the end of school is just around the corner. I want to thank the entire Waterford Community for making this spring a great one! SOL testing and Field Day went off without a hitch and I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming fifth grade musical – “The Best of Both Worlds!” The students and parent volunteers have certainly been working hard every day after school and I am sure it is going to be a superb show. Please make sure to review the “Upcoming Events” as the next couple weeks are going to be very busy here at Waterford. The fifth graders will be participating in their DARE graduation on Monday, June 9th at 9:00 AM and then will have a promotion ceremony on Wednesday, June 11 at 7:00 PM. We certainly are going to miss them but know that they are well prepared to face the challenges ahead in middle school and beyond. A special thank you to the PTO board members and volunteers who will be moving on with their children from Waterford next year. The drive and dedication of the community that supports Waterford Elementary helps to make it an exceptional place for learning. I am already looking forward to the 2014-2015 school year and the great things that will be happening here at Waterford! CONGRESSMAN FRANK WOLF HONORS RETIRING WATERFORD TEACHER On June 4, Waterford received a very special guest who took time from his busy schedule to honor Mrs. Verdin who is retiring after 40 years of teaching. Congressman Wolf visited the 3 rd grade classrooms, kindly answering a battery of questions then wowing students with his yo-yo tricks. 3-5 grades were then called to the multi-purpose room where the Congressman surprised Mrs. Verdin with a certificate honoring her dedication and an American flag that actually flew above the Capitol. Thank you Congressman for visiting our school and for your service to our country. Thank you Mrs. Verdin for your years of teaching and the love that you have shown our children! We will miss you! 1

LIBRARY LINKS NEWS FROM THE

WATERFORD ELEMENTARY LIBRARY

Summer Reading Program

“Fizz, Boom, Read!” is the name of our reading incentive for the summer. A “booming” treat will be awarded to those “star readers” who complete the Summer Reading program, with Loudoun County Public Libraries, along with being entered into a drawing to win a Kindle e-reader. Below are the details for the summer reading program.

How can my child/children participate in the Summer Reading Program?

1) Visit one of the public libraries starting on June 16th.

2) Sign up for the summer reading program and get a challenge card.

3) Complete 16 challenges, read 16 books or complete any combination adding up to 16 before the end of the summer.

4) Before August 11th, go back to one of the public libraries, with their challenge card, to receive their prize for completing the reading program.

5) When school starts, bring the completed challenge card or certificate to his/her teacher.

Why should my child/children participate and complete the program?

To help Waterford earn the Summer Reading Trophy. The school that has the highest percentage of students enrolled in the program will win the trophy. New this year, the school that has the highest percentage of students completing the program will win a trophy too. Waterford could end up with 2 more trophies! We won the 2nd place trophy two years ago and we would love to add to our collection!

To have a chance to win an iPad Mini from the public libraries.

To be entered into Waterford’s own drawing to win a Kindle E-Reader. One will be awarded to a student in grades K-2 and one will be awarded to a student in grades 3-5.

Can parents/adults participate?

Parents and adults can participate as well. You will only need to complete a portion of the challenges and you will be entered into a drawing to win an iPad Mini.

What should we do if our family will be away for the entire summer? If your child/children are unable to take advantage of Loudoun County Public Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge, please feel free to join the summer reading program at one of the libraries near your vacation spot. Then at the beginning of the school year have your child turn in a certificate of completion to their teacher. We hope you have a relaxing, safe summer and make sure to “Fizz, Boom, Read” at the public libraries.
