Summertime... HereWe Come!
Now that we have made it toJune, who is ready for the dogdays of summer? Memphis is wellknown for our barbeque, ourblues and our hot summermonths.
June, named after Juno, thegoddess of marriage, is the sixthmonth of the year, and is one ofthe four months with a length of30 days. Just like the month ofMay, no other month begins onthe same day as June. This is alsothe month with the longestdaylight hours of the year.
June’s birthstones areAlexandrite, Moonstone, andpearl. Moonstones representchange, new beginnings and theshifting tides of emotion and canhelp a wearer to alleviate stress, especially due to sudden changesin life. Moonstone is also believedto increase intuition and aid inlucid dreaming. Pearls symbolizepurity of heart and faith, as well asgrowth and transformation
through difficult circumstances. Its birth flowers are the
honeysuckle and the rose. Thoseborn before June 20 areconsidered Gemini and thoseborn after June 21 are under thesign of Cancer.

Legumes May Lower Type2 Diabetes:
Type 2 diabetes is growing byleaps and bounds throughout theworld. A recent study by the Unitof Human Nutrition at TheUniversistat Rovira VirgiliTerragona, Spain discovered that adiet high in legumes significantlyreduces the risk of developingthe disease.
Legumes consist of plants suchas alfalfa, clover, peas, peanuts, soybeans, chickpeas, and varioustypes of beans. As a group they arevery nutritious because they havehigh levels of vitamin B, whichhelps the body regulatemetabolism and make energy. They are also high in potassium, magnesium and fiber. They arewhat are known to be lowglycemic. This means blood sugarlevels increase slowly after they areconsumed, unlike bread or cornwhich are high glycemic, whichincrease your blood sugar rapidlyafter consumption.
Legumes also comprise a
variety of phytochemicals whichprotect the blood vessels againstinflammation.
The study that took place over 4years revealed that individualswho ate legumes 3.35 servings aweek had a 35% less likely chanceof developing Diabetes type 2.Lentils had the strongestassociation with low risk type 2diabetes. Just replacing half a dailyserving of protein- andcarbohydrate rich foods (bread, potatoes, and rice) with anequivalent serving of legumesreduced the risk of diabetes.
A Sweet SnackIt’s the short but sweet season
for sweet cherries, which are nowbeing harvested in California andthe Pacific Northwest. Once youget your hands on some, save afew for a nighttime snack.Cherries contain melatonin, ahormone that helps regulate thebody’s sleep cycle.
Eat for Allergy ReliefDo seasonal allergies have you
sniffling and sneezing? Certainfoods may provide some relief byreducing inflammation andstrengthening the immune system.Try broccoli, onions, garlic, pineapple, oranges, watermelonand tomatoes.

Remember When:Drive-In Movies
Premiering in 1933, drive-inmovie theaters grew in popularity, hitting their peak in the 1950sand capitalizing on America’s lovefor the automobile. From familieswith pajama-clad children tocouples on a date night, carloadsof folks took in big-screen featuresfrom the comfort of their ownvehicles—both in them and ontop of them. Since admission wasoften charged per person, somepatrons took to hiding passengersin their car trunks.
Summertime SipsThis summer, relax and unwind
by enjoying an Arnold Palmer, therefreshing beverage created andloved by its legendary namesake.According to the golf greathimself, he got the idea one day atlunch to add lemonade to hiswife’s batch of iced tea, and heexperimented until he found theperfect ratio: 2 parts iced tea to 1part lemonade. Palmer begancarrying a thermos of theconcoction on courses andordering the mixed beverage inrestaurants, and the drink waseventually named after him.
