We are grateful to the following organisations for their in-kind support of the excursions: British Association for Shooting andConservation; the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust; the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds; and the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club.

The Royal Dutch Natural History Society (KNNV), with Paul Kemmeren, facilitated the free distribution of the recently publishedbook Shorebirds: an illustrated behavioural ecology to all the conference delegates.

The European Commission (DG Environment) supported the conference through holding a meeting of the Scientific Working Groupof the Birds Directive’s Ornis Committee within the framework of the conference. This allowed the support of additional delegatesfrom the EU.
