The first annual WaterWorld Middle East conference and exhibition will take place in Doha, Qatar from 6- 8 February 2012, with an outstanding programme of events that will bring together leading organisations and delegates from water and wastewater industries.

Set to become the region’s leading event, WaterWorld will be co-located with POWER-GEN Middle East and enjoys the full support and endorsement of Qatar organizations, including the Ministry of Energy and Industry, Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) and KAHRAMAA.

Furthermore, the conference will benefit from the support of the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA) and the International Private Water Association.

Growing populations and increasing levels of urbanization are pushing the demand for water. As a result, a total of 39 million cubic meters/day of desalination capacity is expected to be added between 2010 and 2020 across the Middle East region, according to industry analysts Frost & Sullivan. The UAE alone is expected to invest 15 billion dollars on water infrastructure up until 2013. And in Qatar more than $10 billion has already been spent on water desalination and power generation in the last decade and the country is expected to invest more than $20 billion in both water and power in the next decade.

Over the course of two days, the conference will discuss important issues and developments in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region over four tracks: Strategic, Drinking Water, Wastewater and Industry Developments. Key topics will include MENA spotlights, wind and solar powered desalination, tariff structuring, utility management, water reuse and biosolids recovery, Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) and industrial water.

A highlight of the conference will be a joint panel discussion The Changing Face of the Middle East Power and Water Project Market with co-located POWER-GEN Middle East. This will explore the growth in power and water consumption and include top level debate from some of the industry’s leading lights.

KAHRAMAAI would like to express my pleasure in welcoming the return of POWER-GEN Middle East to Qatar for its 10th anniversary along with newly co-located WaterWorld Middle East.

The conference assembles local and international delegates from the Middle East and around the globe which includes representation from over 80 international companies spanning more than 30 countries, providing a great opportunity for all participants to benefit through exchanging ideas, knowledge and experiences.

This premier event is an important opportunity for us to share our strategies with other important stakeholders from across the region as well as showcase our upcoming plans and investment opportunities.

Qatar is progressively increasing its investment in infrastructure projects in different fields of Electricity and Water to meet rapid growth associated with the country’s expanding economy, growing population and increasing power and water consumption ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Moreover, the year 2010 has witnessed the start the application of Qatar national vision 2030 where all sectors were directed to ensure aligning with the vision goals and responding to its challenges. It means that the five year plan 2011 - 2015 at hand is that of the national strategies in all sectors including electricity as per Qatar national vision 2030.

KAHRAMAA is growing and improving in almost all aspects of the business which has been positively reflected on service continuation. More than 240,000 electricity customers (as per statistics by end of 2010) have enjoyed non-interrupted supplies during the year’s peak period.

As for the development of the major electricity networks, development plans have been set and implemented through phase 6 , 7 , 8 , and 9 which is currently implemented and 10, in tendering stage to add more new substations with associated cables and overhead lines.

Our long term plans for the development of production capacities defined the best technologies of electricity production during the coming years. Production efficiency in addition to other environmental and economic aspects is put into consideration.

The studies of power trade with the neighbouring countries and the technical cooperation with the friend countries witnessed great momentum during the planning period. It encourages us to launch the GCC interconnection grid for the brotherly countries to make use of the Qatari power surplus.

The interest in the environment issues and employees’ safety and health is one of KAHRAMAA four strategic objectives. It is highly considered as reflected in the low rate of work accidents.

Finally, Qatar’s policy is to create a culture of opportunity and here at KAHRAMAA, we welcome firms to contribute to the development and success of the power and water sector in Qatar and support them to achieve future success.

Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC) is one of the largest power and water producers in the state of Qatar. The government-owned entity is the sole owner of the Ras Abu Fontas complex as well as other power and water facilities plus holding shareholdings in other IPPs and IWPPs.

The Ras Abu Fontas (RAF) complex of power generation and water desalination plants is wholly–owned by QEWC and is its largest facility. It is located 25 km southwest of Doha around 30 minutes drive from the capital. Details of the various site sections are as follows:

RAF A - This is the primary cogeneration combined cycle plant built in Qatar at different phases falling between 1970 and 1993 which now has an installed capacity of 567 MW and can produce 70 million gallons of desalinated water a day (MIGD). The entire plant was built under the supervision of the then Ministry of Electricity and Water, later transferred to Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA). It was acquired by QEWC in 2003 and operates under a power & water purchase agreement (PWPA) under which the production is sold to the government for 12 years.

RAF A1 - The most recently completed part of the complex, RAF A1 reached maximum capacity in December 2010 and features three Fisia Italimpianti desalination units with a capacity of 45 MIGD.

RAF B - Commissioned between the years 1995-1998, the plant was acquired by QEWC in the year 1999 from the Qatar government. RAF B is a cogeneration combined cycle plant with a total capacity of 609 MW of Electricity and 33 MIGD of potable water. It is operated under a PWPA under which the production is sold to the government for 20 years.

RAF B1 - Commissioned in the year 2002 by QEWC, RAF B1 is the open cycle power plant consisting of three units. It stands as an extension to the existing RAF B facility. The total capacity of the plant is 376 MW It operates under a PPA under which the production is sold to the government for 20 years.

RAF B2 - With an installed capacity of 634 MW and able to produce 30 MIGD, RAF B2 was brought on line between 2007 – 2008. It features three GE gas turbines of 211 MW and MSF desalination technology supplies by Fisia Italimpianti.

Tour Outline - The technical power & water plant tour includes return transportation by coach to the plant location from the Qatar National Convention Centre. The tour includes presentations by the plant management about the overall facility and information about the various technologies employed. There will also be an opportunity to visit selected parts of the Ras Abu Fontas facility, including some of the principle power and water units. Refreshments will be provided. Attendees will be back at the Qatar National Convention Centre in good time for the opening ceremony of POWER-GEN Middle East and Water World Middle East 2012.
