GLOSSARY OF TERMS:

Indirect Fired: Heating of the water is accom-

plished from a secondary source such as steam

(boiler steam) or high temperature hot water.

Direct Fired: A water heater utilizing a fossil fuel or electricity to heat a burner or element which transfers heat to the water through a heat exchanger, tubes, or heating element.

Semi-Instantaneous: A water heater with limited

storage capacity designed to heat water under

medium to large load demands.

Instantaneous: A water heater without storage

that is designed to heat water on demand near

the point-of-use. May not be able to serve

multiple simultaneous draws of hot water or

batch loads without the use of storage.

Storage Type: Water heater with larger storage

capacity designed to heat water under high peak

or batch load demands.

Atmospheric: Gas fired water heater that draws

air for combustion from the atmosphere by way

of natural draft.

Fan-Assisted: High efficient gas-fired heater that

draws air into the combustion chamber with the

use of mechanical fans.

Condensing: Ultra high-efficient gas fired heater

in which flue gases are cooled to condensing

temperatures. Often uses a power burner.
