WATER AND

SANITATIONRWANDA

AREA PROGRAMS TARGETED FOR WATER AND SANITATION 2019-2024

RWANDA IS KNOWN AS THE “LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS”. A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY, IT HAS A DIVERSE LANDSCAPE THAT IS HOME TO MANY NATURAL WONDERS AND ABUNDANT WILDLIFE. Agriculture forms a major part of the national economy, with a majority of the population engaged in subsistence farming.

The people of Rwanda are very welcoming, gracious and resilient. Despite the turmoil of the past – as well as present-day challenges – they remain hopeful of a better future.

WORLD VISION IN RWANDAWorld Vision began working in Rwanda in 1994, responding to the unprecedented crisis created by the genocide that claimed the lives of more than one million people and left a further two million homeless.

We provided aid for thousands of vulnerable, unaccompanied children, as well as emergency assistance and shelter to those displaced by the genocide. After the hostilities ceased, we stayed. Since then, we have been working with the people of Rwanda to find long-term, sustainable solutions to poverty, inequality and injustice.

Between 2012 and 2017, World Vision invested US$22.6 million to provide clean water access, sanitation and hygiene solutions for 340,000 people across Rwanda. We train communities on proper hygiene practices, and how to operate and maintain water systems for long-term use. We have achieved a lot, but we want to complete the work. Together, we will.

$718 IS THE AVERAGE ANNUAL INCOME.

12 MILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN RWANDA.

INITIATIVE GOAL

ENSURING EVERY PERSON, EVERYWHERE WE WORK IN RWANDA HAS ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER

IMPACT1 MILLION CHILDREN AND ADULTS HAVE ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

INVESTMENT NEEDED$11.5 MILLION

TIMEFRAME2019-2022 (PHASE 1)

CLEAN WATER ACCESS, SANITATION AND HYGIENE SOLUTIONS ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF EVERY CHILD. These simple measures greatly reduce the risk of serious illness and death. However, in countries like Rwanda, many children lack these essential services, leading to an unacceptable loss of life. World Vision Australia believes that every child deserves the best possible start, and we have a bold plan to make this possible in Rwanda.

With your support and investment in The 2030 Collective, our proven water, sanitation and hygiene program approaches will make possible lasting improvements in health, education and economic development. In Rwanda, our goal is to provide one million children and adults with access to life-saving water, sanitation and hygiene solutions by 2022.

THE VISION IN 1994, WORLD VISION CAME TO RWANDA TO ANSWER THE DESPERATE CALL FOR AID AND EMERGENCY RELIEF. NOW, THE GOAL IS TO DELIVER PROVEN, COST-EFFECTIVE ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER, SANITATION AND HYGIENE SOLUTIONS.

A comprehensive analysis shows that to achieve our vision we need to invest $11.5 million. We will partner with World Vision United States and the Rwandan Government to deliver 100 percent water supply and access to sanitation and hygiene in the areas we work by 2022. With our proven systems and integrated development models, we have the capability to solve the challenges facing these children and their families.

THE PROGRAMWorld Vision – thanks to the generosity of our donors – has assisted Rwandan children and families for more than 25 years. This includes delivering equitable access to the necessary “hardware”, including wells, boreholes, water tanks, toilets and sanitation infrastructure. Our programs equip communities with the knowledge, skills and motivation to advocate for, build and maintain these facilities, as well as adopt good hygiene and sanitation practices.

The time has come to complete the job. To provide everyone – everywhere we work in Rwanda – with clean water access, improved hygiene practices and the facilities for sanitation solutions within five years. Our track record as the leading non-governmental organisation that teaches good hygiene practices, and delivers safe water and sanitation access means we are well placed to achieve this goal.

7 MILLION RWANDANS DO NOT WASH THEIR HANDS AT CRITICAL TIMES.

6 MILLION PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER.

8 MILLION PEOPLE LIVE BELOW THE POVERTY LINE.

THE NEED THERE ARE FEW PLACES ON EARTH THAT HAVE ENDURED AS MUCH TRIAL AND TRIBULATION AS RWANDA.

Progress has been made, however many of the country’s 12.2 million citizens are still without access to clean water and sanitation solutions.

A scarcity of clean water, lack of sanitation facilities and insufficient knowledge of good hygiene practices are contributing to high disease and mortality rates amongst the children of Rwanda. According to the World Health Organization, 36 percent of child mortality under the age of five is due to diarrhoeal disease. In 2017, 47 percent of the water supply systems were not functional. In addition, a recent evaluation indicates that only 41.2 percent of the communities wash their hands at critical times. This low figure indicates behavioural change takes time.

AS PART OF THE 2030 COLLECTIVE, WORLD VISION AUSTRALIA WILL BE COLLABORATING WITH WORLD VISION UNITED STATES AND THE GOVERNMENT OF RWANDA AND OTHER LOCAL PARTNERS, TO PROVIDE SUSTAINABLE CLEAN WATER AND IMPROVED SANITATION SERVICES TO ONE MILLION PEOPLE.

PROGRAM OUTCOMESINCREASED ACCESS TO SUSTAINABLE, SAFE WATER SUPPLY by the construction of pipelines, outlets, water tanks and wells.

INCREASED ACCESS TO IMPROVED SANITATION FACILITIES with the construction of toilet blocks and supporting infrastructure for schools, health centres and communities.

IMPROVED HYGIENE KNOWLEDGE and practices through education programs, advocacy and visitations by trained community health volunteers.

COMMUNITIES ARE EMPOWERED to sustain water, sanitation and hygiene improvements through training and support.

BEYOND THE HOME World Vision recognises the need to upscale our water, sanitation and hygiene solutions to more schools and health centres across Rwanda. We are aiming for safe, equitable and universal access to these essential services.

In a country that has experienced bitter division, our programs can unite communities and take them forward. School children, families and community groups will learn hygiene practices to reduce the impact of waterborne illness. The benefits flow to the whole community.

PIPELINE TO THE FUTURE

95,079 PEOPLE GAINED ACCESS TO SAFE DRINKING WATER.

125,905 PEOPLE GAINED ACCESS TO HOUSEHOLD SANITATION FACILITIES.

AN ADDITIONAL 2,337 COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS WERE TRAINED.

OUR IMPACT IN RWANDA IN 2016-2017

IN GICUMBI DISTRICT, NORTHERN RWANDA, 16-YEAR-OLD ISABELLE IS THRIVING.

Her parents, Thacien and Vestine, are full of pride. They see a bright future for Isabelle and her three siblings because of the changes that clean water has brought to their lives.

Gone are the hours Isabelle spent collecting dirty water that made her and the family sick. Now, clean water comes from a tap just minutes from their home.

World Vision worked with Rwanda’s Water and Sanitation Corporation to rehabilitate a 6.8-kilometre-long pipeline that provides clean water for Isabelle’s family and another 6,000 people across 14 villages. Local schools and the health clinic are also served by the pipeline.

In the months since the water began flowing, this family has not visited the hospital once. “No child goes to the clinic now,” says Isabelle’s mother Vestine. “I no longer see people going regularly to the [polluted] water. We know it’s World Vision that has enabled us to get this.”

“Before, the girls used to wash with dirty water,” adds Isabelle’s father Thacien. “Now ... they are neat. They are smart. They have time to study. They are never sick. Even our Friesen cow doesn’t get worms from dirty water anymore.”

The Rwandan Government has set an ambitious goal to achieve 100 percent water and sanitation coverage for its 11 million people by 2024. And they see World Vision as an effective and powerful partner enabling them to achieve this goal.

“We will support and encourage you,” said Prime Minister Ngirente. “Your goals are our goals. Some NGOs can only do infrastructure but not provide water,” he added. “We heard that at World Vision you build infrastructure and make sure the water is there.”

“ CLEAN WATER PROTECTS US FROM DISEASES,” ISABELLE SAYS. “IT’S HEALTHIER. BEFORE, I WAS OFTEN SICK.”

Isabelle used to get sick, now she gets good grades.

SUSTAINABILITYClean water is essential to life. Therefore, it is crucial that programs are sustainable, so that the water continues to flow and be of benefit for generations to come. To address this, we work with communities to deliver long-term solutions. The aim is to train and empower communities to maintain and operate water and sanitation systems, so they continue functioning long after we’ve gone. Giving people the knowledge, incentive and financial ability to empower their future and become self-reliant.

PART OF THE BIGGER PICTUREThis initiative will make a distinct and significant contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal for clean water, sanitation and hygiene. It will also have positive flow-on effects for achieving the Global Goals for quality education, good health and gender equality – and the overarching goal of eradicating extreme poverty in all its forms by 2030.

Clean water means life for the children of Rwanda.
