WaterQualityProtectors!

Welcome to WITtec 2018

We hope you will plan to join us over the 3-day WITtec conference as it explores Pollution Prevention and New Technologies in Wastewater Treatment which is the conference theme this year - and find a session of interest to you. On Tuesday 4/10/18 is an Industrial session from 1-5 pm featuring, new technologies in filter presses and recovery systems including pollution prevention methods to directly reduce impact on wastewater treatment. Wednesday 4/11/18 offers four all-day technical courses and exhibits which will open at 4:00 pm with a Meet and Greet. As is customary, on Thursday 4/12/18 we offer the concurrent sessions (Industrial or Municipal), in which attendees may choose any topic of interest in either session. Also, the exhibits are open 8:00 am-3:20 pm. The IIOA business meeting is at lunch Wednesday and the Awards program is at Lunch on Thursday. Operators can earn 20 hours at WITtec most of which are technical with respect to wastewater treatment. We would like to thank our exhibi-tors, speakers, volunteers and attendees for making WIT-tec the place where Water Quality Protectors Meet. And thank you for choosing WITtec for your choice of wastewater education opportunities.

IWEA Welcomes Attendees Greetings and welcome to WITtec 2018 from the IWEA Pretreatment Committee. Through collaboration and knowledge sharing, WITtec pro-vides a forum for connecting people with information. As you enjoy this year’s conference, take to time to ask questions and interact with your fellow

professionals. You may believe that your issues and challenges are uniquely yours, but more likely than not, some-one attending this conference is facing something similar. Learn, grow, and collaborate.

As you think about this year’s theme and participate in the many technical sessions, continue to seek opportunities to learn about reducing, eliminating, or preventing pollution. Encourage thinking about things in a new way rather than how it’s always been done.

In addition to the Pretreatment sessions on Thursday, April 12, 2018, we will be offering the Registered Pretreatment Coordinator course on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. The Registered Pretreatment Coordinator course provides a good foundation for those new to Pretreatment and a good refresher for those who have had previous experience.

Focus on Serv‐ing . . .

Our Director David Taylor has a long his‐tory of community service outside of wastewater con‐sul ng.  Mr. Taylor is the IIOA Liaison to IWEA and one of our founders of the IIOA whom saw the vision of its mission for outreach.  In the early years of IIOA, he managed the “Art Contest” for Water – An Endangered Resource.  This effort brought educa on about water quality to third and fourth graders and later to our mentored program.

Dave also served as “Santa” bringing joy to hundreds of children each year – many of them in local hospitals.  So it should come as no surprise that he is ac ve in “Beep‐Ball” for the visually impaired and blind.  We o en take for granted the two

thin lens that bring details of our world in shapes and colors.  But for those without that precious gi  of sight an ac ve fun life can be challenging.  So what one might ask is Beep‐Ball?

Beep‐Ball is played with a ball that contains a “beeper” and bases also have beepers.  When ba ng a player is tak‐en to the plate and pitched to by a sighted pitcher and allowed 4 strikes and 1 pass ball. When the ball is hit a base operator ac vates a switch and one of the two bases begins buzzing so the ba er can determine which base to run to. The defensive players must find the beeping ball and pick it up before the ba er gets to the base to score an out. If the ba er gets to the base before the ball is picked up, then a run is scored.

Dave’s team Indy Thunder won both the 2016 and 2017 World Series Championship of the Na onal Beep Ball Associa on.  Over 25 teams competed from the U.S., Taiwan, Canada and Dominican Republic.  Dave says, “coaching this team is one of the best things I have ever been involved with” and he volun‐teers many hours teaching players and volunteers about the game.  The game is costly to provide a qual‐ity life experience for the players.  Each Beep‐Ball is $35 and they need 100 balls each season.  In order to take the team to the World Series compe on they must raise over $30,000 for the 22 players and 20 vol‐unteers that help the team.  The team website is www.thunderbeepball.org and the na onal site is www.nbba.org  Please contact Dave at the conference or at 317.989.4908 AT Environmental or  [email protected] If you would like more infor‐ma on about how you can be involved in this sport  either as a volunteer or sponsor.
