Mayor’s MessageI would like to once again extend my greatestthanks to Newmarket residents for your contin-ued effort and commitment to waste diversion.

In our increasingly ecological-friendly society,Newmarket is proving to be a leader in environ-mental preservation and sustainability. The greenbin program is one noteworthy example asNewmarket residents have continuously demon-strated their support for this initiative by makingthis town one of Canada’s top waste diverters.

Working together, we can continue to ensure aclean, healthy and beautiful community for bothourselves and future generations to enjoy. Keepup the great work!

Environmental LeadershipKermit the frog once said ‘it’s not easy being green.’

It may not be easy, but in the Town of Newmarket it is a way of life. The Town continues to lead the way in environmental initiatives and remains one of Canada’s most progressive environmental leaders.

Newmarket has celebrated numerous environmentalmilestones, including:

For more information on Newmarket’s environmental initiatives please visitwww.newmarket.ca and click on environmental leadership

or e-mail [email protected].

• Canada’s greenest subdivision – first subdivision in Canada to be built toLeadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum standards

• A Pesticide and idle free community

• An Active Newmarket Environmental Advisory Committee (NEAC) that participate in environmental policy and public advocacy

• A highly successful green bin program which has led to a 64% waste diversion rate

• A new Environmental Community Plan coming in 2010

'Waste not, Want not!'Don’t forget to compostAlthough compostable items are accepted in the green bin program, the Town of

Newmarket encourages all residents to continue to use backyard composters.

Compost produces an excellent soil conditioner and is a less costly way to divert

organic waste from landfill.

Composters are available year round at the Townof Newmarket Operations Centre

(623 Timothy Street) for $36 (cash or cheque only).

Please note the Operations Centre will be moving in summer 2010.

Visit www.newmarket.ca to learn more about Newmarket’s waste diversion initiatives.

Composting tips• Always keep your compost

material as moist as a dampsponge.

• Chop waste into smaller bitsfor faster decomposition.

• Don't add thick layers of anyone material (particularlygrass), mix it with othermaterials instead.

• Continue to compostthroughout the winter. The composting processslows down but speeds upagain in the spring. Coldtemperatures are actuallybeneficial, the freezingaction breaks down thefibres in organic materialthat aids in decompositiononce it thaws out.

COSMETIC PESTICIDES NOW BANNED FOR SALE AND USE IN ONTARIO

SMART TIPS TO GROW GREENMow Smart Reduce the growth of weeds by cutting your grass less often. Keeping the lawn between 6 and 8 cm (2½ to 3 inches) high blocks out the light weeds need to germinate. Consider a push mower. Push mowers cut grass blades cleanly, making your lawn healthier and more pest resistant. They’re also better for you and the environment.

Water Wisely Your lawn only needs 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water a week. Water in the morning when more water gets absorbed. Don’t water when rain is expected and don’t water during summer droughts when water reserves are low.

Wash Away PestsA quick blast from the hose can wash away small colonies of pests on trees or shrubs before they can infest your garden. You can use this method to control aphids but to be effective, it must be done repeatedly.

Plan Ahead Native plants are more likely to thrive. They’re already resistant to local pests. Don’t plant vegetables from the same family in the same place year after year, as it can encourage pests to move in.

For more helpful tips and green alternatives visit ontario.ca/additup

Paid for by the Government of Ontario

Using pesticides on our lawns and gardens is unnecessary and harms our environment along with the health of our families and pets. That’s why Ontario has banned the use and sale of pesticides for cosmetic purposes. The ban replaces any municipal bylaws, establishing one clear set of easy-to-understand rules.

Safely Disposing of Pesticides Help protect our environment by properly disposing leftover pesticides. To fi nd out about collection events or where to fi nd the closest depot to you, visit dowhatyoucan.ca.

GROWING HEALTHY LAWNS AND GARDENSHaving a green and healthy lawn and garden without pesticides is a new way of thinking that takes a bit more planning, but it’s worth the effort.

For more information on West Nile virus, contact York Region Health Connection

1-800-361-5653 www.york.ca/westnile

Some mosquitoes carry West Nile virus and their bites may lead to West Nile virus infection. Clean up! The best way to keep mosquitoes away is to clean up areas of standing water around your home where they like to breed.

• Clean up and empty containers where water collects (old tires, tin cans, flower pots, etc.)• Change water in bird baths weekly• Remove water that collects on pool covers• Turn over items such as wading pools, wheelbarrows and small boats• Clear leaves and twigs from eavestroughs, storm and roof gutters• Unclog drainage ditches so that water flows freely• Make sure swimming pool pump is circulating• Clear out dense shrubbery where mosquitoes like to rest• Turn over compost frequently• Check that door and window screens are tight fitting and in good repair• Drill holes in the bottoms of containers so water can’t collect

Winter Weather DelaysCollection may be affected when weather packs a punch.Snow, ice and wind can affect solid waste collection. Snow and ice make otherwise‘flat’ roads and lanes difficult for the trucks to navigate safely, while hills can benearly impossible to service without the risk of property damage. Wind can also betreacherous, creating roadblocks or hazards involving overhead lines.

At these times, the Town will error on the side of caution and temporarily post-pone collection service until conditions improve.

In the event of inclement weather, here’s what to do:

1. Throughout winter, please keep your sidewalk and driveway shovelled and ensure your containers are not hidden by snowbanks or other obstructions.

2. For garbage or recycling service alerts, please visit www.newmarket.ca, or phone 905-895-5193.

3. Please be patient. Servicing your home is our priority – but the safety of people and property always come first.

4. Do not place items on top of snowbanks.

WHAT IS IT? Climate change includes changes in temperature, shifts in rainfall patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events like heavy spring rains, drought, ice storms and heat waves. Greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels in vehicles, from coal plants and from industry are all contributing to climate change. The average Ontarian creates about fi ve tonnes of greenhouse gases each year: about the weight of an African elephant.

WHAT CAN WE DO? Simple actions all add up to real and positive changes. We can all make everyday choices that save energy and money and shrink our environmental footprint. Let’s get started.

HOW DOES IT AFFECT US? Climate change can show itself in many ways. Extremely hot summer weather can create droughts that threaten crops and increase smog days, lake levels could drop, insect infestations could threaten our forests, and animals like our polar bears could lose their habitat.
