Washington Woods is partnering again this year with Chaucie’s Place, a child

advocacy organization in Hamilton County, to bring Smart Steps: A Body Safety Program for Children to our Kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grade students. Smart Steps is a child abuse prevention and education program that empowers our children to say "NO!" to any unwanted touches from anyone that makes them

uncomfortable.

We invite you to attend a Chaucie’s Place Parent Night to learn more about

the Smart Steps program. Shamrock Springs Elementary will host this preview on Thursday, October 29th from 6:30 pm -- 7:30 pm. This meeting is open to all

parents and/or guardians of Kindergarten, 2nd and 4th grade students in West-

field Schools. Please be advised that Parent Night is not open to children. To

learn more about Chaucie’s Place visit: www.chauciesplace.org.

On Wednesday, November 18, presenters from Smart Steps will visit each of the Kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grade classrooms. The parent preview on Oc-

tober 29 at Shamrock Springs will give an overview of what those presentations

will look like. We hope you're able to attend to learn more about this important

program. Look for more information coming home next month about the Smart Steps classroom visits.

If you have any questions about Smart Steps, please contact me at 867-7906 or [email protected].

Inside the Handbook Guiding Principles

Westfield Washington Schools fosters its character education curriculum by teaching students

the following behaviors of character: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Honest, Be Compassion-

ate, and Be Hardworking. Westfield Washington Schools are schools where dedicated staff, in-

volved parents/guardians, and patrons work together to prepare our students to learn and prac-

tice these guiding principles. These principles emphasize positive character attributes that we

hope our students will carry with them into the world of work and throughout their lives. The

schools also employ several non-cognitive skills such as empathy, self-control, resilience, and grit

to support the aforementioned behaviors of character.

Bus 9 has changed temporarily to bus 41 but will soon

change to bus 24. This will be a permanent change.

WWS Clothing Drive and Giveaway

Looking for some family fun over Fall Break? Clean out those closets! On Monday, Novem-ber 2nd, we will begin our collection for the 15th Annual WWS Clothing Drive and Giveaway. All types and sizes of clothing are welcome -- from baby to adult, from shoes to coats, and every-thing in-between (no used socks or undergarments, please!). Because of the large volume of cloth-ing we receive, it is extremely helpful to our volunteers if bags/boxes are labeled (men's pants, girls shirts, etc.). You may send your donations in with your child or drop them off at your child's school. Donations will be accepted through Tuesday, November 24th. The clothing donations from all of the Westfield schools will then be made available to the public at no cost on Saturday, December 5th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Washington Woods Elementary. Look for more information about the December 5th giveaway in November. If you have any questions regarding the clothing drive/giveaway, please contact Brian Sawa, Wash-ington Woods school counselor, at 867-7906 or [email protected]. Thank you!!!

Dear Parent,

This week was Fall Safety Week. Your students did a great job practicing many drills. We

were able to practice the following drills: Bus Evacuation, Fire, Severe Weather, and

Earthquake. Your students are well versed in many drills, but we took some time to discuss

the earthquake drill, as this is a drill that we participate in only once per year. Here is a bit

of information that we shared with the students:

If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, then Drop, Cover and Hold On:

DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!), Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops

Stay indoors till the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. In most buildings in the U.S. you are safer if you stay where you are until the shaking stops.

If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, you should find a clear spot away from build-ings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then Drop, Cover and Hold On. Stay there until the shaking stops.

If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seatbelt fas-tened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution and avoid bridg-es or ramps that might have been damaged.

Please take time to discuss these drills with your children and come up with a plan for your

house as well!

Here is some important information about our Title I programs in math and

language arts.

Title I is a federally funded program intended to assist any students who

might be having academic difficulty in math or language arts. Our school is one of four in the

district that qualifies for Title I funding. Although the dollar amount we receive is based on

our school socio-economic status, the students in the program are from all different socio-

economic backgrounds, as they are selected based on their academic needs.

Each fall we review student performance to determine who might qualify for additional sup-

port. We have several Title I teaching assistants hired through the grant funding. They work

with small groups of students, grades K-4, in math and language arts. The small groups operate

Monday through Thursday. The assistants work closely with classroom teachers and our litera-

cy teachers.

Throughout the year we are regularly pulling students into small groups to address skills at

their level. So students become very accustomed to the grouping and regrouping. One of the

ways we monitor and organize these groups is our RtI (response to instruction). Each grade

level has a specific RtI block of time each day that allows us to differentiate, remediate, and

enrich. All of this is intended to help us serve your children better.

To find out more about Title I and to have any questions answered, please join us for an infor-

mational meeting at 5:30 on Thursday, Nov. 19, right before the beginning of Family Math

Night. We hope to see you there!
