Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – The Way, the Truth, and the Life How do we know the way to God the Father? Only because Jesus has shown it to us by His life on earth, His Passion, death, and Resurrection. How do we know that Jesus is the Truth? Because all He said and prophesied came to pass. He is faithful to His promises. How is Jesus the Life? Building upon last week’s Gospel, because we can truly live only by obeying His commandments and walking with Him in humility. In the world today, in which philosophies, ideologies, and political agendas do everything but lead us to the truth and show us how to live, Jesus gives us the simple solution. How do we know what to do and how to live our lives in a fallen world? Because Jesus has shown us and told us that the one who trusts in Him shall not be put to shame (Isaiah 28:16, Romans 10:11). archstl.org/dynamic

Rules to make life better God's commands are not heavy to bear, if we truly love Him. Diligent obedience lightens our hearts, letting our soul soar higher to lose itself in the love of God. It is, instead, the heavy burden of sin and guilt that drags us down in life. If we are willing to shuck off that load of selfishness, willfulness or laziness, we will find each day’s road shortened by the lightness of our step. God has given us rules to make life better, not worse, like the safety instructions on a kerosene lamp. Obey the rules, and we have a light to guide us. Refuse and we may burn our shelters to the ground.

THIS WEEK’S READINGS: Our Gospels for the next few weeks are taken from Jesus’ “farewell discourse” at the Last Supper in John’s Gospel. Today Jesus reassures Thomas, Philip, and us, who don’t understand where Jesus is going, much less how to follow him there. All we have to do is focus on knowing and believing in him, and we will find the way. It will not be easy to do, but that is why we have our community with us, to help us. See how the early church community sorted out a big issue in today’s first reading? We can do the same. Let us listen and learn how. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Drawing on the strength of today’s word and Eucharist, how can I offer creativity and understanding as a path toward resolution?

May 6/7 2017 – Fourth Sunday of Easter The Good Shepherd In today’s Gospel, Jesus presents the parable of the Good Shepherd - the kind, loving caretaker who guides His sheep, and they follow Him, knowing His voice (Jn. 10:1-10). He presents the role of a shepherd as an act of loving guidance, not a stern director - that He leads and shows the way by example. The Annual Catholic Appeal is an invitation to lead by example, following in the footsteps of the shepherd of our parish and our archdiocese. Every year, thousands of people turn to ministries and apostolates supported by the ACA for hope and healing. In our parishes and schools, neighborhoods and communities, they experience the light and love of Jesus, our Good Shepherd. As we continue to celebrate the Easter season, we are invited to consider more deeply the mystery of Jesus’ death and Resurrection: that the least among us will become the greatest, that the one who would lead would serve - that we must die to gain eternal life. Thankfully, we are not alone on this journey, or in contemplating the mystery of salvation. Together, we are building up a community, led by hearts joined in charity. As missionary disciples, we give of ourselves – offering Christ’s hope and joy to the least of our brothers and sisters. This Easter season, let us experience Christ’s peace, and joyfully share that peace with everyone we meet. Our Goal this year: St. Joachim - $10,810 with a challenge goal of $19,310 (which we always exceed!). St. Joseph’s goal is $973.00. Pledge cards for St. Joachim are available in the school cafeteria this weekend following all the Masses. At St. Joseph they are available on the table in the back of Church. Everyone is encouraged to take a few minutes to make their pledge. Thank you for your generous support of the Annual Catholic Appeal last year. Please remember that your contribution and those made throughout the Archdiocese, helped to enliven programs and ministries right here in St. Joachim Parish with our Parish School Assistance of $149,000 and Tuition Subsidy for Paul VI Institute of $250.00.

WHITE HOUSE RETREAT CENTER All women of the parish are invited to join us on our annual retreat at the White House Retreat Center, St. Louis, MO. This will be a silent, guided retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It’s a peaceful break from the chaos and confusion of everyday life. It’s like a 3 day vacation with Christ on their beautiful 8- acre campus high on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. All meals and private lodging are provided. Our retreat begins the evening of July 20th and concludes July 23rd. There is no set fee to attend a retreat the White House! White House operates on a free will offering basis, asking those in attendance to simply give what they feel they can at the conclusion of the retreat. To register Call Donna Laramore at 573-210-6706 or visit www.whretreat.org to find additional dates.

St. Michael House Day on Tuesday, May 16th. Doors open at 10:30; Lunch is at 12 noon. Sandwiches and chips will be provided. Those whose last names begin with A-M please bring a dessert; those whose last names begin with N-Z please bring a salad, relish tray or veggie tray. Come join us for a day of fun and games! Please call 438-5002 for more information. (Weather permitting, of course!)

IN YOUR KINDNESS AND PRAYERS, please remember the families of JUANITA ANDERSON, who died recently. She is the mother of Traci (John) Coleman of our parish and PEGGY SUE (BOYER) WILLIAMS, sister of Joan Karsch of our parish. May God continue to comfort them in their sorrow in the days and weeks ahead.

THANK YOU! “The St. Anne Sodality would like to thank everyone who braved the weather and came to our bingo last Sunday. We had a good turn out and raised $1102.00 for the parish. Thanks again! We will hold our Turkey Bingo in November. See you then!!

“Your Future Begins With Us” News from St. Joachim School

Mission Statement The mission of St. Joachim Catholic School is to assist the parents and parish community in the shared responsibility of providing an excellent religious and academic education that is Alive in Christ for the children of Washington County. GREETINGS FROM THE DESK OF MRS. LITTON April Showers will bring us May flowers. May is a wonderful month of the year. This month St. Joachim has two graduations, a May Crowning, a History Day, Field Day and of course the last day of school. This weekend we welcome eight students who will receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Included are Alex Coleman, Brady Kincaid, Adalyn Kirby, Gavin Mosier, Jimmy Politte, Lillian Thebeau, Shawn Tolar, and Savannah Wilson. Congratulations boys and girls. As we finalize this school year, I am busy working on next year's attendance and schedule. Our school has many great subjects to talk about and we have made accomplishments throughout the year. I am looking forward to another year to continue teaching the Catholic faith, updating curriculum, improving our school, and meeting the needs of our students. The parents have been wonderful in supporting the school and of course we cannot forget to thank the many grandparents who do so much for us. Volunteers, you are awesome too. Other organizations have been very generous to our school and we are thankful for your support. I would also like to compliment the parents and coaches that have managed our sport activities. This is a big job and is well done. The students love to be active and compete with other schools. Each year I see the building of better sports' teams. June brings both principal and teachers' meetings in St. Louis. These meetings train us for emergencies and upcoming requirements. Vacation is scheduled for employees and I wish all of you a fun and safe summer too. Please mark your calendars for this summer's Bible School July 17-21 at the Rural Parish Workers. GOD BLESS!

IMPORTANT DATE!! ST. JOACHIM FALL FESTIVAL, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

It’s not too early to start thinking about our Annual Fall Festival! Please put the date on your calendars and plan on helping out! If you weren’t able to attend the short Fall Festival meeting on Tuesday, April 25th, these are a few of the things that were discussed:

• We are looking for someone to chair our main raffle. This person would be responsible for planning the prize layout and securing additional prizes for the raffle. If you are interested in chairing this position or have any workable ideas or concepts please feel free to call Mary Ann at the business office or write them down and put your response in the Sunday collection basket. Thanks!

• We did discuss whether or not to keep the $5000 raffle prize and the possibility of adding ½ beef for the raffle. Additional prizes will also be needed.

• We are looking for someone to chair the placemat advertising portion. That would entail following up on advertisers after our initial mailing goes out and soliciting new advertisers.

• We NEED someone or group to handle the parking!! This is extremely important and we need help with this!

• We need help with emptying the trash throughout the day. If you can help with that, let us know. • Our first order of business is to get a firm commitment from last year’s booth workers. If you worked

in any booth or area of the Festival please call the business office at 438-6181 or send us a message or email to let us know if you plan on helping out. If you cannot help please call and let us know that also.
