As part of its
commitment to
the continuous
education of udw
across Europe,
ELHUA is pleased
to announce that
its 5th International
Conference will
take place in the
beautiful city of
Warsaw from the
3rd to the 6th of
June at the
Warsaw Marriott hotel. This follows the
hugely successful 4 conferences previously
held in Brussels in 2010, Vienna in 2012, in
Prague in 2014 and in Madrid in 2016. To
date, the conferences have been a great
success, with the first conference attracting
123 participants from 25 countries, the
second conference 147 from 28 countries
and the third attracting 162 from 30
countries. Our goal for next June 2018 is
150+ participants!
Warsaw was chosen as a suitable venue
due to its central European location, easy
access within and outside of Europe and its
excellent conference facilities. For those
who are not familiar with Warsaw and its
surrounding historical towns, we have
provided a useful booklet which you can
download from our website
Our committee has created the attached
program to cater for the needs of
Underwriters and Claims Assessors of all
levels and is based on the valuable
feedback provided by attendees at previous
events. Presenters at the conference will
range from experts in insurance and
reinsurance to Medical Doctors to Key Note
speakers.
We have introduced a structure to the
ELHUA conference where the conference
/workshops, will focus on showing your
Underwriters and Claims Assessors how to
apply what they have learned to their day-
to-day case assessment.
The main language of the next conference
will be English, however cater for local
attendees we have arranged simultaneous
translation in Polish.

Professional Experience
Rebecca began her career in insurance after completing a Bachelor of Commerce and
Administration degree at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. After
working in the direct office market at AXA Insurance as part of the underwriting team,
Rebecca came to the UK in 2005 where she worked as an underwriting auditor at Legal
& General and then a senior underwriter at Dentists Provident Society. She moved to
reinsurance in 2008 with roles at Excel Re and SCOR Re. Rebecca joined RGA in May
2010. After working in the underwriting team for four years, she moved to the Global
Underwriting Manual Research and Development team where her main role is to
develop underwriting manual guidelines.

Professional Experience
Lukas joined Dacadoo in 2015 as Sales Director Europe. Following his Master Degree
in Sport Technology and Administration at the EPFL in Lausanne in 2008, Lukas
moved to Singapore where he joined World Sport Group Pte Ltd (now a part of the
Lagardère Group) – Asia’s leading Sport Marketing and Media Agency.
From 2008 - 2013 Lukas worked in various sales, marketing & business development
roles in the football, golf and cricket departments of World Sport Group, operating
mainly in South East Asia, Australia and Uzbekistan.
Following his return to Europe Lukas joined a high precision wearable technology
company mainly used in Formula 1 as Head of Sales Switzerland, UK and Austria.

Dr. Gorka Bastarrika

Professional experience
Director of the Radiodiagnosis Service and Specialist in Radiodiagnosis with a
preferential dedication to thoracic radiology and cardiac imaging Dr. Gorka Bastarrika
is a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Navarra.
Accredited as Professor of the University in the area of Radiology and Physical
Medicine by the National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality and Accreditation
(ANECA) and holds the diploma of Cardiac Radiology of the European Society of
Cardiac Radiology.
He completed his training in cardiothoracic imaging in prestigious international
hospitals such as Klinikum Grosshadern and St. Johannes Hospital in Germany and
the Royal Brampton Hospital in London.
Subsequently, he conducted a fellowship in cardiovascular research at the Medical
University of South Carolina. He worked in the thoracic radiology section and was
director of the Cardiac Imaging Unit of the University Clinic of Navarra.
After being appointed Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, he has
developed his professional work as head of the cardiac magnetic resonance (MR)
section in the cardiothoracic imaging unit of the medical imaging department of the
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto, Canada.

He has participated in numerous research projects and is the author of more than 200
communications to national and international conferences, more than 120 scientific
articles and 12 book chapters, and is editor or co-editor of 3 cardiac imaging books.
Member of several scientific societies, he has participated as a member of the scientific
committee in the organization of congresses. He is currently the vice president of the
Spanish Society of Cardiothoracic Imaging (SEICAT).He has received several
research awards, congress prizes and publications prizes.

Stephan Becher is a specialist in occupational and general Medicine with more than

Stephan Becher is also Medical Advisor in life and disability insurance for AXA since
2000 in Cologne and gives lectures on occupational medicine at the University of
Wuppertal.

Arndt Broeringmeyer is a senior consultant in life and disability insurance with more
than 12 years´ experience in Underwriting and Claims adjustment. Since 2006, he
works for Deutsche Rückversicherung AG in Düsseldorf.
Arndt Broeringmeyer is responsible for risk assessment and claims adjustment,
primary insurers´ process analysis and optimization, product management, execution
of studies and publications.

Since 2005-2014 Sandrine Faivre is Professor at the hospital of Paris Nord Val de
Seine (HUPVNS), Paris. In November 2015, she was named head of the Department
of Medical Oncology, and Head of the Phase I and Clinical Pharmacology Unit, SIHC
(Beaujon University Hospital, Clichy, France). She worked also for the Department of
Medical Oncology, CHUV, at Lausanne, (Switzerland) as head of Digestive & Head
and Neck Oncology department.

Dr Guzel is active in insurance medicine for over 20 years. She worked as chief
medical consultant for Warta Vita, ATU Life, Gerling Polska. Since 2004 she holds
position of CMO for Allianz Polska. Dr Guzel is a founding member of the Polish
Association of Insurance Medicine - PAIM (1988), chairs and co-chairs this
professional society since 2001. She participated in establishing in 2001 CEECLAM-
Central Eastern European Committee for Life Disability and Health Assurance
Medicine and for 6 years has been president of the Committee. In 2010 she became
Board Member of ICLAM (International Committee for Life Disability and Health
Assurance Medicine). She was personally responsible for organising numerous PAIM
and CEECLAM Conferences. Currently she is a lecturer for insurance medicine at the
Warsaw Medical University. Editor in chief of book “Insurance Medicine- Underwriting,
claims, health insurance” (published 2013, dedicated for polish market).
She was granted a honorary membership (1999) of Academy of Insurance Medicine
of Asia (AIMA) and Hungarian Association of Life Insurance Medicine MEBOT (2001).
Qualifications
MD, PhD graduated from Warsaw Medical University (1987), specialised in oncology
and radiotherapy (1993).
She gathered experience (1993-97) in oncology units of: Royal Marsden NHS Trust
London, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Cancer Centre London,
Institut Gustave- Roussy Villejuif, University Hospital Leiden.

Seven years of medical experience in Military Hospital in Warsaw and First Private Hospital/ Medical Centre in Warsaw and has twenty years of experience in Life and Health insurance. Expert in handling operational processes “END to END”, optimization and automation, tele-underwriting, e-claims and e-application tools, she participated in implementation of the first in Poland automatic underwriting system for direct sales. Dorota is responsible for life and personal insurance in SIGNA IDUNA Poland (new business, underwriting, policy servicing and claims processes).

Professional Experience
Katarzyna started her adventure with life insurance in 1994 in Commercial Union
(currently Aviva). Through the 5 years in CU she developed her underwriting skills
starting from the position of Junior Underwriter to Deputy Director of Underwriting
Department.
Since 1999 she’s been working in reinsurance industry, first 10 years in Swiss Re
Warsaw office. In 2011 she joined RGA and currently occupies position of Chief
Underwriter and Claims Manager for Poland.

Aja O’Gorman is a medical and financial underwriter with 10 years’ experience in the
reinsurance environment. She has been with SCOR Global Life since 2015 and
previously worked with Munich Re (Canada) as a Senior Underwriter and
Underwriting Consultant.
She also has extensive experience in underwriting manual development, large case
review, auditing and development of underwriting Best Practices.

Dagmar has worked for different life and health insurance companies for many years.
Her focus was on underwriting with various aspects and her experience ranges from
operational underwriting to the analysis of processes. Most recently, she worked for
R + V Versicherung with focus on process automation and digitization of application
processes.
In October 2017, Dagmar joined adesso AG as Insurance Consultant. In addition to
her work in the project, she is involved in the development of Adesso topics such as
Robotics Process Automation and other topics.

Professional Experience
Dr. Achim Regenauer is a specialist in internal medicine with many years of experience
in clinical medicine before he joined reinsurance industry. During several decades he
acquired knowledge in risk management of international life insurance (case
assessment, development of guidelines, various forms and depths of underwriting,
coaching, product counselling, claims, complaint management), partially also in health
and non-life insurance.
During this time, he worked internationally for Munich Re at an executive level with
additional engagements in various insurance associations (e.g. Board Member of the
ICLAM and Chairman of the board of Department for Life Insurance Medicine in
Germany).
In the last years one of his major task was to monitor and to analyze non-financial
trends in medicine, technology, society and politics in terms of their impact on life and
health insurance.
As from 1st January 2017 he joined PartnerRe as the Chief Medical Officer focusing
on longevity issues, underwriting and critical illness.

Izabela holds a master's degree in Biology at Warsaw University of Life Sciences with a specialization in Immunology, postgraduate studies in Pharmacoeconomics, Marketing and Pharmaceutical Law at Warsaw University of Technology Business School, Insurance Medicine and Medical Bodily Injury/ Dismemberment claims assessment from Medical University of Warsaw.
Twelve years of experience in Life & Health insurance, since ten years she is an underwriter in life and health insurance in SIGNAL IDUNA. She is experienced in identifying pre-existing and non-disclosure in health insurance and implemented and improve underwriting process: tele-underwriting.

Dr. John Schoonbee, M.D.

Dr John Schoonbee graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1995 and
performed his internship at Groote Schuur Hospital. After some years in private
medical practice he joined the corporate world which included working at a company
that specialized in corporate sick leave management, in its own right, as well as the
link to future short and long-term disability.
While running his own sick leave and disability consulting company he joined RGA in
South Africa and became Chief Medical Officer and Head of Research.
Dr John Schoonbee is a medical doctor who has been working in the insurance field
for about 15 years and directly for reinsurers since 2005. John began working at Swiss
Re in July 2011 and is their Global Chief Medical Officer, in addition to specifically
covering the EMEA region. He is involved in many aspects of life insurance, including
product development, risk and claims assessment, as well as helping with pricing some
of the more complex medical life and health products.
John coordinates a team of over 30 permanent and consultant medical doctors at
Swiss Re, in addition to focusing on key global health topics.
John was secretary of the Medical Underwriting Standing Committee of the South
African industry body ASISA (Association of Saving and Investment of South Africa).

Professional Experience Medical doctor, specialized in emergency medicine. Phd in the field of mountain
medicine. Lecturer of emergency medicine (Department of Emergency Medicine
- Medical University of Gdansk, Poland) as well as mountain and expedition medicine
(Medical Center for Postgraduate Education.
- Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Poland). Helicopter Emergency Medical Service
in Gdansk, Poland.
Many high-altitude expeditions as a physician and a climber (Mont Blanc, Elbrus, Lenin
Peak, Chan Tengri, Passu Sar, Island Peak, Lobuche East, Nanga Parbat,
Dhaulagiri, Broad Peak, Mount Everest). He participated as a climbing doctor in three
Polish, national, winter expeditions: Nanga Parbat 8125m (2006-2007) and
twice Broad Peak 8047m (2008-2009 and 2010/2011). Was on the summit of three
eight-thousand-meter peaks - Dhaulagiri (8167m-2008), Nanga Parbat (8125m-2010)
and Mount Everest (8848m-2012). He was awarded the gold medal (Medalla al Merito
Deprtivo) for the participation in the international rescue action for the Spanish
himalaist Inakie Ochoa de Olza on Annapurna in 2008.
Run medical training for the Polish national team of himalaists and was responsible for
the medical coverage of Polish national expeditions (Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak,
Gasherbrum I, Lhotse, Makalu, Manaslu, Broad Peak Middle, K2).
Memberships Member of the International Society for Mountain Medicine and the Polish Society for
Mountain Medicine and Rescue.

Professional Experience
Paul joined RISK-CONSULTING in September 2008. He has been responsible for the
international development of the company's solutions for evidence-based medical
underwriting, and has managed the business relationships with several companies,
closing contracts with clients in Germany, Austria and the UK.
Prior to that he had 12 years management experience at FICO as Director Insurance
Europe and then as Managing Director of FICO's consulting joint venture in Germany,
INFORMA Unternehmensberatung.
Before that he spent 5 years as a research scientist working on optically coded security
systems and 3 years as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group, focused on data-
driven risk management.

Dr. Villanueva is an ICLAM (International Committee for Insurance Medicine) Bureau
member and was the Vice-chairman of the Organizing Committee for ICLAM 2013 in
Madrid.
Qualification
Dr Villanueva holds a Medical degree from University of Navarra Spain, an MBA from
C.T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston, Texas, USA; a Master in Life
and Health Insurance from INESE, a Master in Health Law from European University
of Madrid, Spain. She has more than 20 years of experience in Health and Life
insurance where she has been Chief Medical Officer in direct insurance and Chief
Medical Underwriter for reinsurance.

Ivanka Williams

Professional Experience
Ivanka has worked in the Life Insurance Industry for almost three decades and has a
wealth of Underwriting and Claims experience.
Following various roles in Australia with both insurance and reinsurance companies

Ivanka joined Allianz in 2005, relocating to Singapore as Regional Risk Manager for
Allianz Reinsurance Asia Pacific (ARAP), providing Underwriting and Claims technical
support to internal and external clients across Asia Pacific, the Middle East and North
Africa.
In 2010, Ivanka transferred to Allianz SE Insurance Management Asia Pacific (AZAP)
as Regional Chief Underwriter, overseeing all Life & Health Underwriting and Claims
functions for the Asia Pacific Region.
In March 2014, Ivanka moved to Munich to take on the role of Global Head of
Underwriting and Claims with the Global Life and Health division of Allianz SE, a
challenging role she continues to be extremely passionate about.
Ivanka is focused on satisfying customer needs while continuing to develop a sound
risk management strategy in the areas of Underwriting and Claims that is both prudent
and commercially viable. She is also enjoying exploring her new home city, Munich.

Professional Experience
Daniel D. Zimmerman, M.D., is Senior Vice President and GST Chief Medical Director
of RGA Reinsurance Company and a member of RGA’s Global Support Team. He is
responsible for thought leadership, case consultation, product development, client
support, and internal and external education. Additionally, he serves as co-editor of
ReFlections, RGA’s global medical newsletter.
He is also Managing Director of The Longer Life Foundation, www.longerlife.org, the
not-for-profit partnership between RGA and Washington University School of Medicine
that funds clinical research into lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that impact
mortality and morbidity.
Before joining RGA in 2014, Dr. Zimmerman was a medical director with Northwestern
Mutual Life Insurance Company for 8 years. Previously, he practiced primary care
internal medicine and pediatrics in Tampa, Florida.
Qualification
Dr. Zimmerman received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School
of Medicine and Public Health and his undergraduate degree in Medical Microbiology
and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He has held
leadership positions with the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI), participated in
program committees of the American Academy of Insurance Medicine (AAIM), and
frequently represents RGA to key industry professional organizations. He has also
contributed several articles to the Journal of Insurance Medicine, OTR, and Best’s
Review.
