In what can only be described as earth-shaking news, the Michi- gan Science Center is created an exhibit about earthquakes de- signed by University of Detroit Mercy students. The entire exhibit is the result of a collaboration between Uni- versity of Detroit Mercy, Ford Motor Company Fund (Ford Fund), Detroit Cristo Rey High School and the Michigan Science Center. The exhibit explores the sci- ence behind earthquakes through a table exhibit especially designed by Detroit Mercy dual enrollment students from Cristo Rey. Engi- neering students and faculty worked together with educators at the Michigan Science Center, which is located in Detroit next to the Detroit Institute of Arts. They all got together to develop the concept, said Dave Pember- ton, spokesman for University of Detroit Mercy, and later the proto- type for this interactive display. The project was made possible by a grant from the Ford Fund’s Ford Community Corp. (FCC). Through a partnership with Detroit Mercy’s Institute for Leadership & Service, FCC aims to support faculty and students who are interested in developing a service-learning project to meet the needs of a nonprofit organization or target popula- tion in the metro Detroit area. “I’m very thankful Ford Fund gives us the support to do proj- ects like this because it’s a great opportunity,” said Detroit Mercy graduate Nynke Van Der Goot, who was one of the lead Engi- neering students on the project. “All the students involved in the project learned a lot. For me, it gave me real-world experience. It’s also great that we can make a difference in the community.” Van Der Goot and Detroit Mer- cy student Jonathon Mittelstaedt created the proposal to develop a project for the Michigan Sci- ence Center. Once the proposal was approved, Van Der Goot and It’s finally here. Details of Cadillac’s 2019 Pedestal Edition ATS-V Coupe and CTS-V Super Sedan have been made available to the public. The vehicle is designed to cele- brate the successful first 15 years (2004-18) of its Cadillac V- Series sub brand, said Cadillac spokesman JL Lavina. The limited-run models are also meant to bid a grand farewell to the third generation of ultra- high-performance V-Series mod- els, and open the next major chapter in the sub-brand’s story. In total, 300 Pedestal Editions will be built for sale in the U.S., Canada, and the Middle East. The special-edition variants are named in tribute to Cadillac V-Series’ time spent at the pinna- cle of luxury high-performance, said Lavina. Rayess, taught a class withdual enrollment students fromDetroit Cristo Rey, who weretasked with creating an idea forthe project.Dual enrollment is a special

program at Detroit Mercy, whichallows high school students totake classes at the university forcollege credit.The students toured the Michi-

gan Science Center and devel-oped several different ideas be-fore settling on the EarthquakeTable, Pemberton said. Soonafter, Van Der Goot, Mittelstaedtand Professor of Mechanical En-gineering Jonathan Weaver builtthe prototype, which was recent-ly tested at the Michigan ScienceCenter.“It’s amazing,” said Van Der

Goot, who graduated in May andnow works as a product engineerat The Woodbridge Group.“When we started, it was just

an idea, a very vague idea, but Ireally wanted to see a new exhib-it in the Science Center.“Now the prototype is here

and it’s really a feeling of accom-plishment.”The Earthquake Table allows

Science Center guests to createstructures and then test howthey would hold up to simulatedearthquakes. Guests can learndifferent techniques used inmodern buildings to ensure theirstructures are sound.“Users learn how to build a sta-

ble structure so it doesn’t shakeas much,” Van Der Goot said.“For example, if you use trian-gles, you can build a more stablestructure than just havingsquares. It gets people interestedin earthquakes and maybe thescience behind earthquakes.”The project is in its final stages

after being tested by ScienceCenter patrons, with plans for itto become a permanent exhibit.“I think they came up with a

really great design,” said CassieByrd, chief learning officer at theMichigan Science Center. “Thenice thing about the exhibit is itssimplicity. It’s gotten us excitedabout how we might incorporate

more community-built exhibitsinto our galleries.”Van Der Goot said the dual en-

rollment students really enjoyedthe class, and she’s hopeful itwill encourage them to pursue acareer as an engineer.“Sometimes high school stu-

dents think engineering is allmath,” Van Der Goot said. “Ithought maybe it will be cool forthe students to do somethingthat’s more real life, then maybethey’d get more interested in en-gineering. It can motivate themto think, ‘Oh, engineering is fun.There’s a lot of cool stuff thatgoes into engineering.’ Becausethere are not enough engineersin the world right now.”For more information on the

sign an eBike,” Cathcart said.“There are a lot fewer movingpieces that need to go together.They may be simpler, but look atthe eBikes that were designed.One is foldable and one is com-pact. They are innovative andhave many safety features. We’llrelease more details in 2019. ButI will say that we will take theeBike to the next level.”GM has many iconic brands,

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) –Germany luxury automakerBMW said Nov.7 that its net prof-it fell 24 percent in the thirdquarter.

The company spent more onnew technology and faced mar-ket disruptions due to othercompanies failing to getvehicles certified in time fornew European Union emissionstests.

Net profit fell to 1.40 billioneuros ($1.6 billion) from 1.84billion euros in the year-agoquarter.

The figure was short of the1.61 billion euros foreseen by an-alysts surveyed by financial in-formation provider FactSet. Rev-enues rose 4.7 percent to 24.74billion euros.

The Munich-based automakersaid it was increasing its invest-ment in the new technologiessuch as autonomous and electriccars that are expected to trans-form the industry in comingyears.

Research and development ex-penses in the first nine months ofthe year rose by 400 millioneuros to 3.8 billion, and are dueto total 7 percent of sales for theyear.

BMW managed to get its carscertified under tougher newemissions tests, but Daimler andVolkswagen both had to sell offuncertified vehicles ahead of theSept. 1 deadline, leading to pres-sure on prices.

The company also faced head-winds from warranty actions andtrade tensions. It had 679 millioneuros in charges for recalls andservice actions, dominated bythe recall of 1.6 million vehiclesin Europe and Asia to fix an emis-sions control component thatcan cause the vehicle to catchfire.

New Chinese import taxes oncars, imposed in retaliation tonew U.S. tariffs on Chinesegoods, also hit BMW because itmakes cars in the U.S. and ex-ports them to China.

The company’s single largestplant is in Spartanburg, S.C.

BMW said the tariff conflicthad undermined consumer confi-dence.

The profit margin on sales, akey earnings metric, fell sharplyto 4.4 percent from 8.6 percentfor the automotive business.BMW also makes motorcyclesand has a financial services busi-ness.

“Our forward-looking ap-proach has absolute priority,”

said CEO Harald Krueger, as thecompany spends to expand inelectric vehicles and autono-mous driving as well as offeringtransportation as a service thatdoesn’t involve owning a car.

The company has agreed toform a joint venture with Daimlercombining the two companies’efforts in smartphone apps fortaxis, parking locator servicesand car sharing.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) – DebbieStephens remembers raising herhand in her East Lansing JuniorHigh School class to correct ateacher who told the studentsthat Henry Ford invented theauto assembly line.“My great-grandfather did that

before he did,” Stephens recallssaying.Ford’s claim to fame was the

mechanized assembly line, but itwas Stephens’ ancestor RansomEli Olds who came up with theidea for mass production. Work-ers in his factory would roll chas-sis on carts to allow parts to beadded to them.More than a half-century later,

Stephens, who is now 66 andlives in Dublin, Ohio, is still fight-ing to preserve her great-grand-father’s legacy, which is deeplyrooted in Lansing.Debbie Stephens, her husband

Peter Stephens, and a group ofmore than a dozen auto histori-ans, companies and electricworker unions have scored a ma-jor victory in their efforts to keepthat history alive in Lansing.They spent three years raising

money – they won’t say howmuch – to buy the only knownsurviving 1899 Olds electric car.The 119-year-old four-seater

has been on loan to the R.E. OldsTransportation Museum, but itwas in danger of going into thehands of a private collector.“It’s so much a part of R.E.

Olds and the history of this mu-seum it couldn’t go anywhere buthere,” Bill Adcock, executive di-rector of the museum, told theLansing State Journal.It cements Olds’ legacy as the

only auto pioneer who experi-mented with four types of poweron early cars: steam, gas, electricand diesel.While electric cars seem like a

recent development, early autopioneers experimented with

them. Though they were consid-ered reliable, they were also veryexpensive.Olds built his first vehicle in

1887, a three-wheel steam-pow-ered car with a gas boiler. By1899, he had developed severaldifferent types of motorized vehi-cles. That’s the year the Olds Mo-tor Vehicle Co. and Olds GasolineEngine Works were combined toform Olds Motor Works. Manu-facturing was moved to Detroit.Around that time, he was ex-

perimenting with electric carsand offered them for sale, thoughit’s unclear if any were ever sold.Olds electric was priced at$1,600, which is $48,000 in to-day’s prices. Other companiessold 8,000 electric cars by 1900,according to a history suppliedby the museum.A disastrous 1901 factory fire

is believed to have destroyed 15Olds electric cars. The survivingelectric Olds was likely off site atthe time of the fire.After the fire, Olds moved back

to Lansing and dropped the elec-tric vehicles to concentrate onthe gas-powered Curved Dash,Debbie Stephens said.“The gasoline cars were cheap-

er to produce. His goal was tomake cars for what became themiddle class,” she said.But even if Olds continued to

produce electric vehicles, helikely would have “hit the samewall” as other electric car manu-facturers, said Peter Crisitello, aNew Jersey auto history buff andexpert on electric cars. Advance-ments in internal combustion en-gines made them the favoredtype of car, and gasoline powerbecame the accepted technologyover electric and steam for therest of the 20th century.With electric vehicles in the

rear-view mirror and all but for-gotten, the rare 1899 Olds elec-tric was uncovered in a Lansing

garage in 1959. Two brothers,Don and Ken McDowell, pur-chased the car and stored it foryears. In 1996, they loaned it tothe R.E. Olds Transportation Mu-seum.The brothers have since died.

After their deaths, the descen-dants started getting inquiriesfrom car collectors to purchaseit.Stephens and others feared

that the car might be sold to acollector in Europe or Asia, nev-er to be seen in Lansing again.The three-year fundraising

effort was led by Lansing attor-ney Jim Neal, a volunteer at themuseum.

DETROIT (AP) – Two formerFiat Chrysler executives and aunion official have been sen-tenced to prison in a corruptionscandal at a labor training cen-ter.Jerome Durden, who con-

trolled the finances at the UAW-Chrysler National Training Cen-ter, was sentenced Nov. 7 to 15months in prison. MichaelBrown, who helped run the cen-ter, was sentenced to a year inprison. United Auto Workers offi-cial Keith Mickens got a similarsentence.Seven people have pleaded

guilty in the federal probe, in-cluding Fiat Chrysler’s formersenior labor negotiator. The in-dictment alleged there was aconspiracy between some com-pany officials and senior mem-bers of the union to use moneyfrom a training center for travel,clothes, booze and other luxu-ries. The union’s FCA negotiator,General Holiefield, died in 2015.
