Warren County Court House Records

Delpha Musgrave, Preservation Specialist, from the StateHistorical Society of Iowa (SHSI) spoke at our April meetingabout the last 40 years of microfilming Iowa’s county courthouse records. County records, like birth, death, marriage, naturalization, probate, land transfers, etc., are all documentsthat genealogists crave, in order to discover their ancestors.

To explain the filming process, here is a brief background. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints establishedFamilySearch as a genealogical organization, to gather andpreserve genealogical information world wide. FamilySearchhas been microfilming county court house records in Iowasince around 1974 (at the same time our nation’ssesquicentennial sparked interest in preserving historicaldocuments). At this time, Delpha worked at the StateHistorical Museum in Des Moines and took on the job ofbeing the coordinator between FamilySearch, the State ofIowa, and county records holders (Clerk of Court, CountyRecorder, Auditor) to get their records preserved on microfilm(i.e. records from Iowa’s beginning, up to the 1920s).FamilySearch footed the whole bill to bring in theircameramen, film the records, process the film, and check tomake sure it was legible. Filmers have been to all of Iowa’s99 counties and to most counties more than once. Whilethere, they also filmed genealogical records available thatwere not government documents (like church records, cemetery records, atlases, and unpublished family trees).Since filming began in Iowa, several Iowa court houses havelost those original documents, by fire, flood, renovations, andsimply discarding the records from lack of space. Startingthis fall, FamilySearch will be replacing their microfilmingcameras with digital scanning cameras and continuepreserving county records.

FamilySearch stores their original film in Granite Mountainoutside of Salt Lake City, but they make copies available attheir Family History Library in Salt Lake City and oninterlibrary loan throughout the US at Family History Centers(listed online at FamilySearch.org). SHSI received acomplimentary master negative of each film fromFamilySearch which is stored at the State Archives in DesMoines. SHSI paid to have a “user”copy available at theState Historical Library at 601 E. Locust St., Des Moines;however; since the 1990s, budget cuts have caused SHSI tostop making user copies for the public to view at the library.Consequently, there are about 10,000 rolls of microfilmedcourt house records of Iowa that are not available to the publicat this library. At the meeting, Delpha brought printoutslisting the microfilm available from Warren County.Currently, there are 69 rolls of film available at the State

Warren County Courthouse Records (cont.)Historical Library on Warren County (58 rolls of courtrecords and 10 rolls of historical records from the WarrenCounty Historical Library). Sadly, there are still 127 rolls ofWarren County court house records that are not available tothe public at the State Historical Library. These include thefollowing topics: District Court Probate Records 1885-1925,Probate Case Files 1861-1911, Probate Bond Records 1887-1925, Wills 1902-1932, Index to Land Deeds 1892-1901,Index to Town Lot Deeds 1893-1904, Land and Town Deeds1882-1901, Auditor Description Books 1864-1869, OriginalEntries (land grants) 1848-1859, Real Estate Transfers 1867-1923, Miscellaneous Records Index 1870-1923, andMiscellaneous Records, 1861-1925.

You Can Learn From My Mistakes!by Marieta Grissom, CG

Many of you may know that I’ve been working on mymother’s memoirs for nearly five years. I had the 250-pagebook, with 873 photos, indexed and completely finished whenI sent a test file to the publisher. Fortunately, I had decidedon a reputable, traditional publisher (Anundsen Publishing inDecorah, Iowa), with print-on-demand, small-quantityoptions. After looking at the test file, Erik Anundsen calledme and explained that the resolution on many of my photos isvery low and they will not print well.

Oh, my! Now what? I had no idea that what I saw on mycomputer screen and what I printed on my home printerwouldn’t be similar to what I would get when my bookpublished. I had no idea that scanning isn’t so simple, andthat I shouldn’t just scan a picture using the preset settings onmy scanner, touch it up with my basic knowledge ofPhotoshop Elements, and have a reasonably good product forMom’s book.

So, now what? Fortunately, the Iowa Genealogical SocietySpring Technology workshop was only a week away. And,fortunately, the speaker was going to be Eric Basir, aPhotoshop expert from the Chicago area. I emailed him aboutmy predicament and we discussed some options. We furtherdiscussed my situation during breaks at the conference. Atone point he had me show him specific pages in the book, then wanted to see the picture in my scan file. I spent a longtime trying to find the picture and never did find it. I thoughtmy pictures were somewhat organized, but, obviously, not so.In the end, I purchased everything Eric had for sale and wenthome for an intense, crash course. From the workshop andhis DVD classes/presentations, I gleaned information aboutscanning and enhanced my photo editing skills.

Here is the essence of some things I’ve learned.

Resolution, Image Size, and Color Mode: Even though youmight not see the settings on your scanner at first glance, ifyou dig you should find settings for resolution and image size. You should always scan pictures at a minimum resolution of300 ppi (pixels per inch). For Mom’s book I am now using

600 ppi. This will use hard-drive space, but when weighingthe options, I consider it worth the price. In addition, youshould scan with an image size similar to what will be usedfor your final product. If you need the picture twice thesize of the original, you should scan it that way. If smallerthan the original, then scanning at the size of the originalimage size works well. You may find yourself makingadjustments with nearly every picture you scan. Anotherhint is that Eric says you should scan every photo in colormode, even if it is a black-and-white picture. This allowsyou more photo editing options.

Save Images as a TIF File: I know we’ve all probablyheard this many times. Now I’m a believer. I am nowsaving the original scan as a TIF (TIFF). When I begin towork on the picture in Photoshop Elements, I save it as aPSD (Photoshop) file. When I’ve completed the editing, Isave it again as a PSD file; no detail is lost with PSD, justas with TIF. However, the way I’m bringing the photo intoMom’s book won’t allow me to import a PSD file, so I savethe file once more as a JPG (JPEG). However, notice Idon’t do any more editing in the JPG (JPEG), where Iwould lose quality.

Organizing: Another lesson learned is that I really didn’thave a vey good way of organizing my photos. Now I amusing the wonderful Organizer in Photoshop Elements toorganize my photos. I should never have another lostphoto.

Send Test File: The final word of wisdom is that I shouldhave sent the test file before I completed the book.

By Denise Gripp

Oftentimes, in my diggings at the State Historical SocietyLibrary, I come upon a genealogical jewel well worth sharing.A few months ago, I was digging in the SHSI’s Clipping Files(more commonly known as “vertical files”in our genealogicalworld), and I decided to take a peek at the “Warren County”file, which was found under the Clipping Files subcategory,“Cities and Towns.” At the tip-top of the stack ofmemorabilia was a 1930 article about the little town ofSummerset -- the very town we will be celebrating at ourannual Log Cabin Days festival this year. I retyped the ratherillegible article –including the obvious “boo-boos”containedtherein. A surname or two is certain to be recognized –evento this day in history. It is unknown what newspaper and datethis article came from.

HISTORY OF SUMMERSET 1848-1930

The following history of Summerset, Iowa, was prepared andwritten by Mrs. Mary Tufts of Summerset, one of the oldestresidents of that town. It was read by her before the guests atthe Pioneer entertainment and exhibit held in her home lastweek.

Summerset, Warren county, Iowa, is a small town located inthe bend of Middle River twelve miles south of Des Moines, six miles north of Indianola. There are a few old settlers stillliving around and near.

The Pioneer men and women, who settled this part of the newcountry were people of activity and energy.

They builded better than they knew for they had to face hardtimes but the hungry stranger was never turned from theirdoor.

In 1849 there were no public highways or bridges in thecounty. In 1850 the crops were good. In view of the comingharvest, mills were built in various localities, corn sold ashigh as $1.50 per bushel. Flour sold for $7.00 per hundredpounds.

Warren county was named for Major General Joseph Warrenwho gave his life in the struggle for independence.

The first land sale was in 1848. John Parmelee built thefirst mill in Summerset; first a saw mill in 1848, and in1849 he added the grist mill. He sold the first goods andkept the post office.

Summerset was an important place for many years. It hasbeen quite a good shipping point for live stock, and has hadcoal mines of much value, operated by Lumsdon brothersand a man by the name of Russel.

We of this day and age know very little of the hardshipthrough which our parents went in the settling of thecounty. Many times the houses were small and the familieslarge. They had to plan all kinds of makeshifts so as tokeep the children clothed and fed and sent to school. It wasdone through many privations of the fathers and mothers towhom all credit is due.

The mill at Summerset was run by water power. The firstmillers were Beach and Parmelee and others in order wereSpray, Rogers, Patton, Edwards, Wright & Davis, Sprague,Blanche, Smiths, Welch, Howard, Brown, Marshall,Utterson, Freeborn.

Doctors who have served in this community are Shank,Chance, Chapman, Hooper, Kern, Flynn, Judkins, Maulsby.

Merchants in business here were Parmelee, Lees and Mont,Barns & Spray, John McClintic, Cris Turnipseed, WillHamilton, Ash & Brown, Nealey & Dowell, Peck andShiveler, Stephenson, Jane Epps, Tom Hastie, Baxendale,Dan Turnipseed, Lamb and Anderson, Martandale, JoeAnderson, Hemphill & Neads, Rastus, Marshall, Barthalme& Lincerfelter, Utterson, Sheets, Beltz, Slocum, Woods,Pitcock, Swisher, Gooding, John Marshall, Schooler &Schooler, and Ray E. Schooler.

Summerset was laid out for a town by Mickel Gilman in1872 after the coming of the Rock Island railroad.

The first mill was replaced in 1865 on the same cite as theParmelee mill by Mickel Gilman. Wright & Davis ran themill, making a good quality of flour and had a good localtrade. Summerset was a thriving village with a good schooland two churches, Baptist and Methodist, with real liveSunday schools.

In the early days there was plenty of wild game such as deerand turkey.

Children were just as happy with their stockings hung up atChristmas time finding them filled with striped stick candy, pop corn balls and orange or apple or a corn cob dressed upfor a doll for the little girls; and what boy but loved hiscopper-toed boots, home-made sled and mittens that motherhad knit.

In those days the farmers would kill from six to ten hogs fortheir year’s meat. Make a barrel of sauer kraut, half barrel

History of Summerset (cont.)of scalded wild plums, a few bushels of wild crab applesburied in the ground with potatoes, cabbage, turnips, andonions. Very few people had cellars or caves. They wouldwatch for a warm day to set out enough vegetables to last afew days. That would be a great day for the children. Theneach child would get a turnip to scrape. There were so fewapples that if they did get one and there were several childrenit would be divided so each one could have a taste.

In early days men came quite a distance from other countiesas far away as Missouri to the mill to get their black-smithingdone. They would have to wait three or four days sometimesfor their turn at the Summerset mill. They would bring theirblacksmith work and get it done while they waited.

John E. Welch, Sr., was the blacksmith at that time. He had ashop east of Summerset on his farm. The first year he hadfour posts set in the ground with brush set up around and overthe top for shelter. He worked there all winter in snow kneedeep. He made the horse shoes and nails while the menwaited.

The first child born was John Laverty in March 1848. Thefirst funeral was that of a man by the name of Hall.

For fifty-one years the church on the Summerset hill has sentout the call for men and women to live the better life. Ourfirst minister and the one who organized the church was theRev. Thomas Miller. Following him were Stitt, Cain, Trelow,Gains, Bonell, Tull, Butler, Terry, Ross, Bails, Emmons,Isley, Tedson, Foster, Dean, Moore, Morrison, Daily, Stoten,Hanson, Sondeson, Lapham, Bartlet, Brame, Thompson,Robertson and Stackhouse.

A.H. Dye has been the carpenter at Summerset for manyyears.

Ticket agents have been Will Hamilton, Tom Brown, andWill Neads.

Second Finding

My second little finding in the W.C. Clipping File was ahandy-dandy index to 1950-59 Indianola newspaper articles. The 30-or-so-page menagerie of weddings, reunions anddeaths was compiled by Irene Weir Murray in 1967. The firstfew pages from the compilation follows. I plan to share morefrom this genealogical goldmine as time/space allows.

News from the Warren County Iowa GenWeb Sitehttp://iagenweb.org/warren/ Karon King

Warren County Cemeteries:

Now in the third year of a five year project to index WarrenCounty’s 57 Cemeteries, the first cemetery alphabeticallyindexed with birth and death dates in 2012 on the WarrenCounty GenWeb site is Calvary Cemetery (online as of April2012). The next cemeteries on a list for 2012 are: NewVirginia Cemetery in Virginia Township, North RiverCemetery in Greenfield Township, St John’s Cemetery inLinn Township, and St. Mary’s Cemetery in JacksonTownship.

The IOOF Indianola Cemetery with death dates and burialplots was put online by Harvey Henry back in 2010, but theOld City Cemetery section whose records were burned in a1907 fire are not included, so this section needs to be walked. Also, the IOOF listings already online have some errors andMerrill Butler, caretaker of the Cemetery, has kindly beenhelping me to make corrections. With maps from thecemetery office, recreated by Harvey Henry, burials can beindexed by plot number within each section. With theselistings, this large cemetery could be rewalked and an updateof the burials in the Indianola Cemetery printed.

New on Warren County GenWeb from Jan-April 2012:

A Photo Gallery section has been added with pictures of 294people, 10 homes, and 9 businesses.

Pensioners on the Roll January 1, 1883, were added includingthe names of 144 Warren County pensioners with their postoffice address, cause for which they were pensioned, monthlyrate of pay received, and original date of allowance.

Biographies from the book, History of Warren County Iowafrom Its Earliest Settlement to 1908, were added whichinclude biographies for 343 Warren County residents.
