THE D IGGER

During the holidays, I frequently overheard people ask each other where the year had gone. Here we are embarking on 2017 when it feels like yesterday that we were facing more than ten months of a presidential campaign and wishing that the campaign season would end quickly. There is no doubt that 2016 will be a year that will stand out in our memories.

In looking back, 2016 was a very exciting year for the Mt. Diablo Genealogical Association. Under the guidance of now Past President, Stan Wells, we saw our membership increase to a very healthy number. Our members were able to attend meetings that provided a spectrum of topics presented by incredibly knowledgeable individuals. The Digger, MDGS’ newsletter, and the society’s website kept everyone informed and have been useful tools in helping us with our research endeavors.

As we move forward, members can expect the same focus on quality. Every MDGS activity is made possible by a dedicated group of volunteers who wish to provide the most rewarding experience for genealogists. How fortunate we all are that we have folks who are so committed to the organization and its mission!

We value your participation and hope that you’ve renewed your membership for 2017. If you haven’t, it’s important that you do so before February 1 in order to continue receiving The Digger. The membership form can be found at the society’s website or in the latest issue of the news-letter. Payment and the completed form may be sent to the Society at 1001 Golden Rain Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94595, or dropped off at the Rossmoor Administration building, or brought to a meeting.

Wishing everyone the best in the New Year!

Medical Records All of us have experienced going to the doctor and having them ask our medical history. Did you have any brothers or sisters, how long did they live, what did they die of, ask about our parents medical history? As genealogists we are unique in tracing our ancestors and compiling a medical history is a good thing.

Checking our medical history can be a challenge, but it also can be very interesting. Medical records of the past were not exactly like they are today, with precise diagnosis. They also used language that is not in use today. However, by looking at death certificates and any other records that you have available a pattern can be found.

Did you have a female member who died shortly after she gave birth? This was not uncommon as medical care for women at this time as primitive and some-times unsanitary. My mother told me about doctors who check the livestock while the mother was in

There’s been a change in Grandma; we’ve noticed her of late,

She’s tracking back the family; we’ll all have pedigrees.

Oh, Grandma’s got a hobby; she’s climbing Family Trees.

Poor Grandpa does the cooking now, or so he states,

That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates.

Grandma can’t be bothered, she’s busy as a bee,

Compiling genealogy for the Family Tree.

She has no time to baby-sit; the curtains are a fright,

No buttons left on Granddad’s shirt, the flowerbed’s a sight.

She’s given up her club work, the serials on TV,

The only thing she does now days is climb the Family Tree.

Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay,

Some were French as pastry, some German all the way.

Some went on west to stake their claim,

Some stayed near by the sea,

Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree.

She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name.

The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same.

She pauses now and then to read, fanned by a gentle breeze

That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees.

To some it’s just a hobby; to Grandma it’s much more.

She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before.

They loved, they lost, they laughed, and they wept, and now forever still,

But they will not be forgotten as long as Grandma climbs the Family Tree.

labor and then came in the house to deliver the baby without washing his hands. Her own mother died of childbirth at the age of 43. Our ancestors also had no antibiotics as we know today and rely on so heavily. Infections that give us no worry today were the cause of many deaths in the past. Amputations and other emergency surgeries were the cause of many an infection from which the patient did not recover. There also were the problems that can be inherited. Did you have an ancestor that died of seizures? How about Bright’s disease (a kidney failure)? Perhaps you or a relative have the same problem. Some kinds of cancer can be inherited. Another interesting study can be in how long did your ancestor’s live. Did they die young of heart failure or apoplexy (stroke)? If so, it would be good to check your blood pressure and keep it under control. For a list of the old disease terms go to: Google and type in “old diseases”. It will take you to a site of many of the old medical terminology terms. Example:
