They lit a kettle – not a candle in Detroit’s Cadillac Square Nov. 20. It was the launch of the annual Red Kettle Campaign staged by The Salvation Army of Metro De- troit throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties. Sponsored by Quicken Loans, the special ceremony featured the lighting of a giant red kettle, representing the smaller kettles at merchandising outlets where volunteers ring their bells and collect donations. The Cadillac Square kettle measured approximately 56 feet tall, 24 feet wide and was lit by 26,000 LED lights. Its lighting was timed to take place just before the lighting of the city of Detroit’s official Christmas tree in the adjacent Campus Martius Park. Included with the giant kettle is a large digital LED board that displays messages, images and The Salvation Army’s progress toward its Metro Detroit goal throughout the Red Kettle Cam- paign. This year’s $8.7 million goal is one of the highest in the history of Detroit’s annual fundraiser. Red kettle donations during the 80-day campaign are vital in en- suring the organization can con- tinue providing more than 3 mil- lion meals, more than 730,000 nights of shelter and an array of social services and programs to the less fortunate each year, said Salvation Army spokeswoman Pat Adanti-Joy. The campaign was launched on the heels of new data from the U.S. Census Bureau reporting that almost 4 in 10 Detroit resi- dents live below the poverty line, while the state of Michigan con- tinues to have a higher poverty rate than the national average. The Salvation Army combats poverty without discrimination using the funds raised during the Red Kettle Campaign, which combines grassroots fundraising with special events designed to engage supporters across metro Detroit. The facility’s achievement was celebrated on Nov. 18 when com- pany officials threw a party to honor its employees who made the award possible. Brose’s Jefferson site makes door and latch modules for Ford, said Brose spokeswoman Anna Browarski. To achieve Q1 certifi- cation, Brose Jefferson proved ongoing performance for quality in production, service and deliv- eries through capable systems already in place at the facility. It also met International Organ- ization of Standardization (TS 16949 and ISO 14001) criteria while pursuing endorsement let- ters from customer central func- tions, Browarski said. Plant manager Surinder Chauhan that currently the plant manufactures about 1.3 million door modules and four million latch modules. “We are aiming to be able to manufacture six million latch modules in the near future,” Chauhan said. “We supply modules for every Ford plant in the U.S. and Cana- da. We make these components for the Ford Focus to the Ford Ex- plorer to the F-150. That’s cars, SUVs and trucks.” Matt Greenisen, Ford’s site en- gineer at the Jefferson facility, said the celebration was a good thing for both Ford and Brose. “This is about recognizing good work,” Greenisen said. “Work that’s been done by a lot of people. The people here do good work, and it’s not often that that is celebrated. Mostly, people hear about problems, but now Ford Execs Say, ‘Good Job’ To Warren’s Brose Plant Customers who rely on Chevrolet and GMC trucks to get their work done can now modify all sizes of trucks with a “box delete” option. Ford and Chrysler have been offering the option to their pick- up buyers for the last several years. The testing will be done at GM and military facilities around the country to determine automotive performance, off-road mobility and military utility. “Hydrogen fuel cell technology is important to GM’s advanced propulsion portfolio, and this en- ables us to put our technology to the test in a vehicle that will face punishing military duty cycles,” said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM’s Global Fuel Cell Engineering activities. Fuel cell propulsion has very high low-end torque capability useful in off-road environments. It also offers exportable electric power and quiet operation, at- tractive characteristics to both commercial and military use, Flores said. “The potential capabilities hy- drogen fuel cell vehicles can bring to the warfighter are ex- traordinary, and our engineers and scientists are excited about the opportunity to exercise the limits of this demonstrator,” said TARDEC Director Paul Rogers. “FCVs are very quiet vehicles, which scouts, special operators and other specialties place a pre- mium,” he said. “What’s more, fuel cells generate water as a by- product, something extremely valuable in austere environ- ments.” GM and TARDEC have fuel cell development and research facili- ties located 20 minutes apart in Pontiac and Warren, said Army spokesman Doug Halleaux. The two collaborate to evaluate new fuel cell designs and materials, and TARDEC’s state-of-the-art facility enables it to test and inte- grate fuel cell systems it has been developing for more than a decade. In 2007, GM launched “Project Driveway,” a 119-vehicle fleet of hydrogen fuel cell-equipped Chevrolet Equinoxes that were driven in daily use for more than 3 million miles by more than 5,000 consumers, Flores said. Hydrogen fuel cell propulsion technology helps address two major environmental challenges with automobiles today – petro- leum use and carbon dioxide emissions, Flores said. Fuel cell vehicles can operate on renewable hydrogen from sources like wind and biomass. Water vapor is the only emission. Additional product details and specific vehicle timing will be an- nounced later, Flores said. GM, Army Check Out Use of Hydrogen Fuel DETROIT (AP) – The United Auto Workers union approved its contract with General Motors Co. on Nov. 20 after addressing the objections of some workers. Production workers ratified the agreement earlier this month by a 55.4 percent majority. But skilled trades workers like elec- tricians and pipefitters rejected it, which sent negotiators back to the table. The UAW says the agreement now addresses those workers’ concerns about job classifica- tions and seniority rights. The union’s executive board formally ratified the agreement Nov. 20. The contract covers 52,700 General Motors employees at 63 U.S. facilities. It raises wages and promises $8.3 billion in U.S. fac- tory investments over four years. DEARBORN (AP) – The UnitedAuto Workers union started theyear with a roar. It’s ending witha grumble.With Detroit automakers prof-

itable once again, the unionpromised workers big gains in itsnew contracts with Ford, Gener-al Motors and Fiat Chrysler. At aconvention in March, UAW Presi-dent Dennis Williams raised afist and proclaimed, “It’s ourtime.’’But while the contracts com-

pleted in the past few weeks con-tain generous wage increasesand profit-sharing, passage wassurprisingly difficult. Many dis-senters said the leadership failedto win back enough of thepainful concessions they madewhen the automakers werestruggling.The divide is a symptom of the

fine line the union walks in aglobal market, trying to improvepay without losing U.S. jobs ormaking Detroit’s automakers un-competitive with foreign rivalssuch as Toyota and Nissan. TheUAW holds out hope of organiz-ing foreign competitors’ U.S.plants, so the union touts its will-ingness to compromise over thehardball tactics of the past.Art Schwartz, a former head of

labor relations for GM, says theUAW should have done a betterjob setting members’ expecta-tions.“These are very good con-

It’s been said that young peo-ple think they’re immortal anddon’t think anything bad willhappen to them when they dofoolish things like drink anddrive – or, take drugs and drive.

Ford Motor Company dis-agrees with the youngsters whothink that way.

The Dearborn automaker hascreated a unique suit for youngpeople to wear. Much like its pre-vious Drunk Driving Suit, thisouterwear dramatically teachesthe wearer about the dangers ofdriving under the influence of il-legal drugs, said Ford spokes-woman Kelli Felker.

Ford developed the DruggedDriving Suit together with scien-tists from the respected Meyer-Hentschel Institute in Germanyto simulate some of the effects ofdrugs such as cannabis, cocaine,heroin, and MDMA (commonlyknown as Ecstasy).

Those who wear the suit findthey have slower reaction time,distorted vision, hand tremorsand poor coordination, Felkersaid.

The new Drugged Driving Suitwill be incorporated into FordDriving Skills for Life, the award-winning young driver programthat has provided training tomore than 500,000 people aroundthe world through hands-on andonline tuition since its inception11 years ago.

“Driving after taking illegaldrugs can have potentially fatalconsequences for the driver,their passengers, and other roadusers,” said James Graham, glob-al program manager for FordDriving Skills for Life.

“We have already seen first-hand the eye-opening effect thatour Drunk Driving Suit has hadon those who wear it, and areconfident that our new DruggedDriving Suit will have a similarimpact.”

Recent national data showsdrugged driving on the rise. Ac-cording to the most recent find-ings from the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration(NHTSA), approximately 18 per-cent of all motor vehicle driverdeaths involve drugs other thanalcohol, such as marijuana andcocaine, Felker said.

A NHTSA roadside survey alsofound that 22 percent of driverstested positive for illegal, pre-scription or over-the-counterdrugs.

Like the Drunk Driving Suitthat Ford incorporated into theDriving Skills for Life programlast year, the new Drugged Driv-ing suit simulates the effects ofreduced mobility, vision and co-ordination with padding and an-kle weights, goggles and head-phones.

“We know that some drugscan cause trembling hands, sowe incorporated a device intothe suit that creates just such atremor,” said Gundolf Meyer-Hentschel, CEO of the Meyer-Hentschel Institute.

“Drug users sometimes seeflashing lights in their peripheralfield, an effect recreated by ourgoggles, while imaginary soundsare generated by the head-phones.

“Additionally, the goggles dis-tort perception, and produce col-orful visual sensations – a side ef-fect of LSD use.”

According to the 2013 NationalSurvey on Drug Use and Health,approximately 9.9 million people12 and older reported driving un-der the influence of illicit drugs,Felker said.

Similarly, a meta-analysis ofmultiple studies from the Nation-al Institute of Health has shownthat the risk of being involved inan accident roughly doubles af-ter marijuana use.

Ford Driving Skills for Life was

established in 2003 by Ford Mo-tor Company Fund, the Gover-nors Highway Safety Association,and a panel of safety experts toteach newly licensed teens andparents the necessary skills forsafe driving beyond what theylearn in standard driver educa-tion programs, Felker said.

The basic premise behind FordDriving Skills for Life is to pro-vide a step in the learningprocess, providing new skills andinformation not currently sharedwith newly licensed drivers inbasic driver education courses.By the end of 2015, the interna-tional program will be offered in30 countries and a hands-on driv-ing clinic conducted in all 50states in the United States, Puer-to Rico and the District of Colum-bia.

The program is expected tohave provided behind-the-wheeltraining to more than 150,000drivers globally by the end ofthis year, Felker said.

Ford joins Honda, Toyota andNissan in deciding against put-ting the inflators in vehicles nowunder development. Takata infla-tors can explode with too muchforce, sending shrapnel into driv-ers and passengers. At leasteight people have been killedworldwide and hundreds injured.The inflators have led to the re-call of 19.2 million vehicles in theU.S., and regulators.

Ford has recalled more than1.5 million older Mustangs, FordGTs and North American-builtRanger pickups to replace the in-

flators. Spokeswoman Kelli Felk-er would not say if other modelshave Takata inflators, but saidthe company has recalled all ve-hicles with inflators that Takatahas determined are defective.

Takata uses ammonium nitrateto create a small explosion thatinflates the air bags in a crash.The chemical can deteriorate un-der prolonged exposure to air-borne moisture, causing it toburn too fast and blow apart ametal canister designed to con-tain the explosion. Ford has de-cided to stop using inflatorspowered by ammonium nitrate,Felker said.

Three other parts suppliers,Autoliv Inc., Daicel Corp. and ZFTRW Automotive Holdings Corp.,are making inflators for Takata-assembled repair modules, andare gaining market share as Taka-ta struggles to cope with thescandal.

Ford: No More Takata for Us

LANSING, Mich. (AP) – FiatChrysler will have to spend anadditional $1 billion on Michiganfacilities over 15 years to qualifyfor $1.9 billion in business taxcredits under an agreement ap-proved last week by the state’seconomic development board.

The deal, the second with aDetroit Three automaker thisyear, is designed to help Michi-gan get a better handle on bil-lions in tax incentives given tokeep auto jobs in the state, pri-marily during the economicdownturn. The redemption ofhigher-than-expected credits ledto mid-budget year spendingcuts in February.

The agreement amends a 2010deal between what was thenChrysler Group LLC (now FCAUS LLC) and the former Michi-gan Economic Growth Authority.The carmaker at the time was of-fered what was projected to be$1.3 billion in tax credits through2031 for a maximum of 20,000 re-tained jobs in the state. Thecredits are worth more, though,nearly $2 billion, because ofhigher wages and other factors.

The new deal caps FiatChrysler’s maximum credits at$1.93 billion through 2029 andgradually increases the numberof retained jobs the companycan claim to 27,000. It also setannual limits on the tax creditvalue that may be claimed in agiven year.

In a statement, FCA said the re-vised agreement providesgreater economic certainty forall parties.

The Michigan Strategic Fundboard approved a similar dealwith Ford Motor Co. in June, cap-ping the total value of the autocompany’s credits at $2.3 billion.

Board President and ChairmanSteve Arwood, who also is CEOof the Michigan Economic Devel-opment Corp., told reporters heis hopeful that an agreement willbe struck with General Motors inDecember.

“They’re both excellent dealsfor the state in terms of knowingthe liability, the transparency,the additional capital invest-ment,” he said of the FiatChrysler and Ford agreements.“They’ve got labor agreementsnow for the next three or fouryears. When you look at whatthese companies have been will-ing to commit to the state ofMichigan, I think it's just a hugewin.”

ance received the ExportAchievement Certificate from theU.S. Department of Commerce inrecognition of opening and ex-panding into foreign markets inthe Middle East and China.The award was presented to

the Livonia-based company atthe recommendation of the Spe-cialty Equipment Market Associ-ation (SEMA).“This award underscores

Roush Performance’s growth insales and brand developmentin global regions,” said TimWheeler, vice president of Glob-al Sales.“The 2015 Ford Mustang be-

came a global vehicle platformfor the first time ever, and it ignit-ed exciting demand from Mus-tang enthusiasts around theworld for our Roush Perform-ance appearance, styling, han-dling and power products.”Wheeler said that Roush Per-

formance is just doing what after-market parts companies do.“The aftermarket abhors a vac-

uum,” Wheeler said.“It will always come up with

the parts that are needed by carenthusiasts.”And this is exactly the time to

formance has always been close-ly tied to Ford.Now that Ford has created a

truly worldwide Mustang, it pre-sented the company with achance to expand its customerbase from basically the NorthAmerican market to a global mar-ket.“We grow as Ford’s perform-

ance market grows,” Wheelersaid.“The global release of the new

Mustang worldwide expandedexport opportunities for theSEMA industry.”“Roush Performance led the in-

dustry in this global demand,”said Linda Spencer, senior direc-tor of international and govern-ment affairs for SEMA.SEMA is also helping guide

business development efforts forRoush Performance in marketsas diverse as Australia, SouthAfrica and Western Europe,Wheeler said.The way it works is that SEMA

provides members informationsuch as commerce, trade, export-ing policies and customs for con-ducting business in differentglobal regions.“What I’ve found interesting,”

Wheeler said, “is that peoplewant their aftermarket parts tobe American. They covet Ameri-can kits.“I was recently in Dubai and

asked what if people could buylocally-made parts and have thework done close by. I was toldthat no, people want the parts tobe American and installed byAmericans. Otherwise, it deval-ues the muscle car. I found thesame thing true in the Chinesemarket as well. They look atthese vehicles as American andwant the aftermarket work to bedone with American parts andAmerican technicians.”Roush Performance is cele-

brating the 40th anniversary ofits founding this year, Wheelersaid.The company’s founder, Jack

Roush, maintained a close rela-tionship with Ford from the be-ginning.The company’s engineers have

worked with Ford engineers tomake sure Roush products areup to the job.The expansion into foreign

markets means Roush’s plantsin the U.S. are busier and thatthe company’s 2015 MustangFive Liter Supercharger kit isco-branded with Ford, Wheelersaid.It was worked on together

by engineers from both compa-nies during its developmentprocess.Commerce Department Assis-

Roush Cited for Moving Muscle Cars Globally

WASHINGTON (AP) – Volkswa-gen’s emissions cheating scan-dal widened Nov. 20 after theU.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency said the German au-tomaker used software to cheaton pollution tests on more six-cylinder diesel vehicles thanoriginally thought.Volkswagen told the EPA and

the California Air ResourcesBoard the software is on about85,000 Volkswagen, Audi andPorsche vehicles with 3-liter en-gines going back to the 2009model year.Earlier this month, the regula-

tors accused VW of installingthe so-called “defeat device’’software on about 10,000 carsfrom the 2014 through 2016 mod-el years, in violation of the CleanAir Act.The regulators said in a state-

ment they will investigate andtake appropriate action on thesoftware, which they claim al-lowed the six-cylinder diesels toemit fewer pollutants duringtests than in real-world driving.The latest allegation means

that more Volkswagen, Audi andPorsche owners could face re-calls of their cars to fix the soft-ware, and VW could face steeperfines and more intense scrutinyfrom U.S. regulators and lawmak-

ers.Audi spokesman Brad Stertz

on Nov. 20 conceded that VWnever told regulators about thesoftware, in violation of U.S. law.He said the company agreed withthe agencies to reprogram it “sothat the regulators see it, under-stand it and approve it and feelcomfortable with the way it’sperforming.”The software is on Audi Q7

and Volkswagen Touareg SUVsfrom the 2009 through 2016 mod-el years, as well as the PorscheCayenne from 2013 to 2016. Alsocovered are Audi A6, A7, A8, andQ5s from the 2014 to 2016 modelyears, according to the EPA.Stertz said the software is legal

in Europe and it’s not the sameas a device that enabled four-cylinder VW diesel engines to de-liberately cheat on emissionstests. VW has told dealers not tosell any of the models until thesoftware is fixed.VW made the disclosure on a

day it was meeting with the agen-cies about how it plans to fix482,000 four-cylinder diesel carsequipped with emissions-cheat-ing software.Stertz said it would cost in the
