On Tuesday 2nd June, Warragul North Primary School was involved in the Winter Sports Round Robin competition. We fielded teams in football, soccer, netball and t-ball. After making the short walk to the venue, our teams began their matches.

With nearly seventy students involved it was a fantastic day with excellent sportsmanship shown and a great experience for all. Congratulations and well done to all students who participated.

A great night was had by all at our first soirée for 2015 with nearly forty children performing on a variety of instruments and in a diverse range of styles. Both our rock bands took part to great applause as well as a number of individuals, duets and trios.

For several children this was their first ‘real’ performance in front of an audience, which is why we like to provide this opportunity at Warragul North Primary School. It is an ideal setting for a debut with the audience comprising of family and friends who are always very encouraging and supportive. It is also wonderful to see how the children progress from year to year as they develop their skills.

Thank you to everyone who was involved with yet another successful evening.

Warragul North Primary School’s Junior School Council has organised a worthwhile fundraiser

to raise funds for the Brac School in Bangladesh.

The Brac School is a small school with very limited school supplies,

no running water or toilets.

These are things which we all take for granted and every school should have.

School Council ReportHello, my name is Kath Stephenson, and this is my first year on School Council.

I have a daughter in Year One at Warragul North Primary School and she loves her school experience. We were so impressed with the recent school production of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies. It is great for the little kids to see the big kids as such positive role models.

It is very satisfying to be part of a school that invests so much teacher and student time into the performing arts.

Part of my role on School Council involves convening the Grants and Publications Sub- Committee, so if parents hear of any funding opportunities, please make contact with me. I am at the school gate on Princess Street with Barry the dog on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CAREThe fence decorations made by the children at OSHC are nearly ready to have lacquer sprayed on them before they are attached to the new fence at the OSHC house. A new addition in the house is a fish tank with two gold fish. This has inspired an activity making dioramas of an underwater scene. A colourful display of ‘All about Me’ sheets creates interest for families when they drop off or collect their children.

Thank you very much to Melissa and Andrea who have worked with us over the past few weeks while Ashlee has been unwell. Hopefully Ashlee will be back at work after the holidays.

OSHC is available on a permanent or casual basis. Enrolment forms are available from the school office or from OSHC. A waiting list is held if a session is already fully booked. It is important that the school office or OSHC is notified if your child is not going to attend a session they have been booked in for as that place can then be used for a casual booking. Once you have a permanent booking you will be billed for that placement whether your child attends or not.

A timely reminder to all families. Please use the forthcoming school holidays to check your child’s hair for head lice. It is a good opportunity to get on top of this pesky problem. Thank you!

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school excursions, incursions, camps and sporting activities.

If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance will be paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, incursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per primary school student will be $125.

If you believe you may be eligible please complete an application form at the school office or return the pink application form that was sent home at the end of May. Application forms must be returned to school by Friday 26th June, the last day of this term. The CSEF payment will be paid directly to the school during Term Three.

ReportsMid-year reports will be sent home next week with your child. Mid-year reports will be enclosed in a report folder which should be retained for storage of end of year reports as only one folder will be sent home per year.

Student Support Group (SSG) meetings and Parent / Teacher Interviews will be conducted early in Term Three.

WORDS Michael Grose

Could try harder . . . always does her best . . . lacks concentration. . . easily distracted . . . a pleasure to teach . . . Do these comments, taken from a batch of student reports sound familiar?

Student reports bring mixed feelings for

parents. Pleasure and pride if they are performing

well but considerable angst when children are not

progressing as you hoped.

Reports can mean anxious times for children

too. Will my parents be disappointed or proud?

This is the main concern of most children. Kids of

all ages take their cues from their parents, so your

reaction to their school report can affect the way

they see themselves as learners and as people.

Before you rip open the sealed envelope containing the report do a little self-check to see if you are in the right frame of mind:

1 Are your expectations for your son or daughter realistic and in line with their ability?Expectations are tricky. If they are too high then

kids can be turned off learning. Too low and there

is nothing to strive for. Pitch your expectations

in line with your child’s abilities. A quick check of

your child’s last report cards may provide you with

a good yardstick.

2 Do you believe that children learn at different rates? There are slow bloomers, late developers and

steady-as-you-go kids in every classroom, so avoid

comparing your child to siblings, your friends’

children and even yourself when you were a child.

Instead look for individual progress.

3 Are you willing to safeguard your child’s self-esteem rather than deflate it?Self-confidence is a pre-requisite for learning, so

be prepared to be as positive and encouraging as

possible. School reports come in different formats.

Some are prescriptive while some use grading

systems such as A, B, C, etc. with room for teacher

comments. Regardless of the format school

reports should provide you with an idea of your

child’s progress in all subject areas, their attitude

and social development.

Here are some ideas to consider when you open your child’s report:

Focus on strengths Do you look for

strengths or weaknesses first? The challenge is

to focus on strengths even if they are not in the

traditional 3Rs or core subjects.

Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning. If the report

indicates that effort is below standard, then you

have something to work on. If your child is putting

in the required effort, then you cannot ask any

more than that, regardless of the grading.

Broaden your focus away from academic

performance to form a picture of your child’s

progress as a member of a social setting. How your

child gets along with his or her peers will influence

his happiness and well-being, as well as give an

indicator to his future. The skills of independence

and co-operation are highly valued by employers

so don’t dismiss these as unimportant.

Take note of student self-assessment Kids are generally very honest and will give a

realistic assessment of their progress. They are

generally very perceptive so take note of their

opinions.

Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about strengths first before

looking at areas that need improvement. Ask for

their opinion about how they performed and

discuss their concerns.

After reports are read and discussed celebrate your child’s efforts with a special activity or treat. In this way you will recognise progress and remind them that the holidays are just around the corner when they can forget about assessment, tests and reports for a while.

9

Special Lunch DaysOn Wednesday 3rd June and Wednesday 10th June the children at Warragul North Primary School enjoyed special lunch days organised by our Parent Club. Lunch included Hawaiian and Margarita pizzas, fruit juice and yoghurt squeezies. The pizzas were cooked and delivered by Alberto’s Pizzas, Warragul and were very yummy. Many thanks to Leisa Meyer for co-ordinating both special lunch days, and to the volunteer helpers who assisted Leisa on both days.

Foundation Post Box AdventureOn Friday 12th June the Foundation students went on an adventure when they walked from the school to the post box at the B.P. Petrol Station in Brandy Creek Road. The excited children posted letters to their grandparents and special visitors. Mrs Purcell took on the role of ‘lollipop lady’ at the school crossing so the children could cross the road safely.

The children walked back to school along Aberdeen Street and Princess Street to look at numbers and patterns in the house numbers and also to see what different materials the houses are built from.

Here are some reflections from children in Mrs Purcell’s grade:

I went to the post box because we had letters for our nannas. By Alex

The walk was cold. By Bella

We went to the post box. We posted our letter and we went on the footpath with Mrs Burleigh and Mrs

Riley and Grandad. It was fun. By Kayli

I liked going to the post box because I wanted to post my letter and it was fun. By Ethan
