Ratios and Proportions

Presentation

•Today, we start on Unit 8 ~ Ratios, Proportions, Unit Rates and Scale Factor. Your understanding of equivalent fractions and solving equations will be essential to your success in this unit.

Presentation• What is a ratio?

– A ratio shows the relative sizes of two or more values.

– 3 ways to write a ratio:1. Part : Part (Part : Whole)

2. or

3. Part to Part (Part to Whole)

How do we compare Numbers?

• A basketball player shoots 8 free throws in a game.

• She makes 5 out of 8.• How might we state this fact using

ratios?

Another Ratio

• What is another ratio we could write to describe making 5 out of 8 free throws?

5:3 the ratio of made shots to missed shots

3:8 the ratio of missed shots to total shots

Making Predictions

• Over the course of a season, the 5:8 player will shoot 72 free throws.

• Use a ratio to predict how many shots the player will make.

Key Vocabulary

• Equivalent Ratios are two ratios with the same value.– Example: 2:3 and 4:6 are equivalent

ratios.

Write an example of an equivalent ratio to 5:7

• Proportion = 2 ratios that are equivalent to each other.

Presentation:•How did we do today?

Did we complete the daily warm-up with 0 noise level?Did we maintain classroom operating procedures?Did we take all the notes without being asked several times?

Learning Together

• Complete the Problem Solving with Ratios worksheet with your partner.

Learning Together:•How did we do today?

Did we maintain classroom operating procedures?Did we work toward our learning goals? I can use my

knowledge of equivalent fractions and solving equations to find equivalent ratios and solve proportions.

Did we stay on topic (no sidebar conversations) to complete the tasks?

Just For Me

• Complete Stations 1-3 by yourself. If you have a question, please raise your hand and ask me. Do not ask your partner!

Just for Me:•How did we do today?

Did we maintain classroom operating procedures including 0 noise level?

Did we work toward our learning goals? I can use my knowledge of equivalent fractions and solving equations to find equivalent ratios and solve proportions.

Did we ask Mrs. Camp for help instead of our partner?

Assessment

• Complete Station 4• When you are finished, make sure

that your name is on your paper and turn it in to your class bin.

Wrap-Up

• Homework: Complete Stations 1-4 (if you did not finish in class today, due on Tuesday at the beginning of class)

• Supplies: Put your journal in the class bin (if you do not need it at home) and place any supplies used back in the supply bins.
