SPOTLIGHT ON STEM
Junior Eco-Camper Badge:Summer is coming! The warmer weather is a perfect excuse to get outside and go CAMP! Junior Eco Camper Badge combines Girl Scout pillars of Outdoor & STEM! Whenever you step outdoors, you are a guest in nature’s home. This is especially true when it comes to camping. Whether or not you’ve been camping before, you will earn this badge by learning how to protect the environment on your trip. It will shape the way you camp forever! Start by learning the Seven Leave No Trace Principles. Next, plan meals with the environment in mind and prepare a minimal impact campsite. After, have fun with Leave No Trace and take a conservation hike in nature!
"When I’ve earned this badge, I’ll have learned skills for minimal impact camping and know how to protect the environment when I go outdoors."
Flash Facts: The wage gap between women and men is much smaller in STEM occupations than other occupations. In STEM fields, women earn $0.92 for every $1 earned by men, compared to $0.77 for other fields.
Girls’ lower confidence in STEM subjects is reflected in their social media communications. A Latin American study revealed that one-third of students’ social media shares about women and girls in STEM were sexist
21% of girls say their parents encourage them to become an actress, while 10% of girls say their parents have encouraged them to think about an engineering career.
STEM Superstar of the Month: JANE GOODALL Dame Jane Morris Goodall, DBE is an English primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist, and UN Messenger of Peace. She is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots program, and she has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues. She has served on the board of the Nonhuman Rights Project since its founding in 1996.
STEM Activity of the Month: OUTDOOR STEM: SOLAR COOKER DESIGN CHALLENGEHARNESS THE POWER OF THE SUN! Gather supplies and let kids think like engineers to design an effective solar cooker!
