A Note From the Principal... William Bryant once said, “Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile!” and I couldn’t agree more. This time of year brings crisp air and along with it an extra bounce in our step. I am so very happy to welcome fall!

A huge THANK YOU to all of our parents who came to our Parent Orientation/Training nights. It is a well known fact that Walter Douglas parents are unsurpassed in their commitment to helping our students succeed. With all of us working together on our math and reading goals I know that this is going to be a very successful year!

Success Assembly Join us in celebrating our Star Students at our Success Assembly on October 6th at 8:00 a.m. Selected students will be honored for their efforts in promoting our Core Value of Respect in the month of September.

Spirit Week: Students are invited to show their school spirit the week of Oct. 24th – 28th. Monday is crazy hair and sock day (colored hair is permissible as long as the color will wash out that night), Tuesday is Superhero day, Wednesday is College day, Thursday is Blue and Gold day and Friday is Costume day (school appropriate costumes only please!).

Fall Break Immediately following parent teacher conferences we will be on Fall Break. Students are off for four days, October 13th- October 16th. School resumes on Monday, October 17th.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up Thank you to all of the parents that have been patient and understanding of the fact that we cannot park our cars and exit our vehicles when using the Mohave entrance to the school to drop off children before school or pick up children after school.

P.A.W.S. Corner with Mr. Nogami The teachers and staff at Walter Douglas Elementary School have adopted the expectation of “P.A.W.S.” Throughout campus students are expected to be promptly prepared, act respectfully, work hard and stay safe. Each quarter the students and staff select an incentive the students can earn by following P.A.W.S and earning days without any negative discipline referrals to the office. This quarter the staff decided the incentive would be called, “Color Attack!” Each student will get to squirt Ms.

McAllister and Mr. Nogami with colored water! Also, because the students have earned 9 days toward the incentive, the student body gets to vote on additional staff members to squirt! Watch

out, Walter Douglas staff! When you talk to your child about school, we encourage you to continue to ask, “How did you follow P.A.W.S. today?” or “Did the school earn an eighth day

without negative referrals today?” Positive reinforcement is a large part of our P.A.W.S. program and we encourage parents and guardians to communicate with their child about the positive reinforcement they receive at school. The Color Attack incentive will be held during the school day, on October 6th. All of us are very excited for this awesome incentive! Student safety and academic success is our priority at Walter Douglas Elementary. We look forward to a positive and productive end of the first quarter and start to the second quarter!

forward to speaking with you and ask that you please make sure you are on time, as we

will be on a tight schedule. We look forward to speaking with you about your child’s

progress. We will be having a school wide Costume parade which will take place on

October 28th, 2016. Please make sure your child wears their costume only on October

28th if they decide to dress up. Parents we ask that you please have your child wear clothes underneath their

costume so if they choose to take off their costume or it is too distracting, they can just take off the

costume. Please check backpacks every night for important notes that come home. Continue to review letters

Mm, Ss, Rr, Tt, Nn, Pp, Aa, and Cc with your child and have them practice

counting to 50. Thank you for all of your support!

Ms. Reynolds Mrs. Roszko Mrs. Izzo-Johns Ms. Waring

support and partnership in working to help your child succeed. Please return any conference

papers promptly so we can try to arrange a time that fits your schedule. Due to tight schedules,

be sure to arrive on time for your scheduled conference. It is important to be there so you can

receive important information and tools to help your child. Students are allowed to wear a

costume to school on Friday, October 28th. The costume needs to be school appropriate.

Students will need to be comfortable staying in the costume all day, or will need to wear clothes

underneath as they will not be sent to the bathroom to change. We will also be having an in class Fall celebration

on the 28th. Our classrooms are currently in need of baby wipes. Thank you for all you do to help your child be

successful!!

Ms. Weigold Mr. Brown Ms. Myrick Mrs. Provencio

Hello 3rd Grade Parents! 3rd grade would like to remind you that we have started working on our

school performance goals. For our reading goal, please read with your child each evening and ask

them a question about what they have read. Students should record their answer on their

“Homework Reading Reflection” log. For our math goal, please solve the weekly math problem with

your child. You can work with your child to solve the problem two different ways, or have your child

solve first while you solve a different way afterwards. Discussing how you and your child solved the

math problem will help your child become an even better problem solver! Secondly, parent-teacher conferences are October 10, 11 and

12. Plan on attending your child’s conference during that week. Finally, thank you for the continued donations of tissues, hand sanitizers,

snacks, and dry erase markers. These donations are always appreciated! Thank you Parents!

Mr. Martin Ms. Powers Mrs. Balder

hard to reach their goals! Additionally, we would be very thankful for any donations of dry erase markers, pencils,

tissues, Clorox wipes and snacks! Grand Canyon News: Our mandatory Parent Night will be Wednesday,

Happy Octo-bear, parents! September went by like an elk on roller skates, didn't it? Let's

review last month and look ahead at another crazy SPOOOOKY October.

We raised a little over $3000 last month towards our annual budget of $13,000! The

money came from our catalog sale, pencil sales, and a fundraiser night with Chipotle.

Hi-fives all around! Thank you all for participating. The items ordered will be arriving on

Monday 10/3 in the morning just after school starts! Be prepared.

October is another super busy month. Here's our rundown, we need your help!

Monday 10/3 order delivery (morning)

Thursday 10/6 PTO meeting! Come! More about this in a bit.

Monday 10/10 An assembly! There's not much for you to do there, really, but it's gonna be rad!

Also it's the kickoff for our Fiesta Cookie Dough fundraiser.

Now, about the PTO meeting-- it's super important that you're there. "Why?" You ask me. "John, I'm

just one person and the PTO is this huge organization! I can't possibly help!" NOT TRUE. Basically,

our PTO is 10-15 parents who want our students to have the best education and elementary school

experience we can provide. A huge part of that experience, the Fall Carnival, is getting planned out at

the October meeting. You want to be there for that. We need you to be there for that. I need your help.

So come and be a part of your child’s school life. I can't wait to meet you!
