*GameFAQs has affiliates that are allowed to use this FAQ freely. GameSpot isone of those affiliates, as is all of CNet. If you see this FAQ on a CNet site, don't bother telling me about it, since (technically) they are allowed to useit.

NOTE: Since this writing, CNet (and thus GameFAQs/GameSpot, etc.) were boughtout by CBS (yes, the TV company CBS). Before you send me an email, you mightwant to make sure that the company in question does not belong to CBS. If yousee it being sold on eBay, always send me an email.

*************************************************** WARNING! READ BEFORE CONTINUING! ***************************************************

First off, this document will contain a lot of . And major ones atthat. I try to keep my FAQs as spoiler-free as possible, but I WILL tell youwhen a certain character leaves and when you should unequip them. Just keep inmind that you WILL run into at least one SPOILER in this FAQ. You have beenforewarned.

If you have a question concerning FINAL FANTASY IV DS and decide to drop me anemail, please be sure to put "FF4 Walkthrough" or something similar in the

Subject line. If you don't, I'll most likely assume it's spam and end updeleting it. In addition, I have other FAQs as well, so keeping the emailsdetailed will help me keep them seperate.

Lastly, if you think you can get your name in this FAQ by sending me bullcraptactics that any fool can follow, you'd be sorely mistaken. I'm not putting inadvice such as "attack your own characters to gain free stats" or anything likethat. If you can actually outsmart me (or find a blatant error), those are thetypes of users that I appreciate and put into my FAQ.

That's all I have to say. Hope y'all enjoy the FAQ. :)

The default Wordpad font (Courier New) is most suited for viewing this FAQ.However, I used Notepad, with the same font, while writing this FAQ. There'sreally no significant difference between the two programs when viewing thisFAQ. I find the Courier New font to be much easier to read than Courier. Notto mention I like Courier New better, but that's besides the point.

A good friend of mine, Arctic (best known for his sweet FF7 FAQ), used theKeyword System in Version 1.1 of his FAQ and has used it ever since. Its solepurpose is to allow you (the user) to search for anything in this FAQ with thegreatest of ease.

Utilizing the Find function (Ctrl+F) that can be used in both Notepad andWordpad, the keyword system is used at the start of each chapter and section. When reading the Table of Contents, you'll see the following by a certainsection:

    [Keyword]

Press Ctrl+F and type in the following:

    ^[Keyword]

And you'll immediately be brought to the corresponding section after you pressEnter. Make sure you don't drop the ^ or you'll end up back in the Table ofContents.

Normally I'd draw some crude ASCII here and describe the battle system withlittle tags. However, I realized that I would literally have to redraw theentire screen and then do the entire bottom screen on top of that. So I decidedto forgo the ASCII and just describe what goes on.

Top Screen  ----------This is where most of the action takes place. All your characters and enemieswill appear up here as well as battle commands when a character's turn pops up.

Bottom Screen  -------------Character's stats and status can be found here. In addition, when you select anenemy, their own stats will appear at the bottom of the screen.

      Battle Notes  ------------

Every character and enemy has an ATB guage (you don't see the enemies' ATBguages, so don't bother looking). When a character's turn pops up, theircommand list will appear on the top screen.

Keep in mind that time is always flowing during the battle! Unless you have theBattle Mode set to "Wait", time will continue to flow for the enemies and theywill continue to get new turns, even when you are selecting battle commands. Ifyou DO have the Battle Mode set to "Wait", time will freeze for the enemieswhile you are selecting battle commands.

NOTE: Enemies who have already obtained a turn will take it, even if you areinside a battle menu. However, time will stop for them once they have takentheir turn, so don't be scared when a few enemies attack you in "Wait" mode.

Switching Turns  ---------------You might have more than one character who has a turn available. If you want tostrategize differently, you can change the active character by pressing the Ybutton. The system will give up the current character's turn and give it to thenext character with the Y button icon by their name.

NOTE: Nobody's ATB bar is affected when you switch turns with Y. The only thingthat changes is the active character you have control over.

Auto-Battle  -----------Don't want to sit through a battle and continually pressing the A/L button?Just switch on Auto-Battle by pressing X! Your characters will take over forthemselves based upon commands you have assigned for them (this is discussedlater on). Press X again to turn off Auto-Battle.

NOTE: Seriously. Don't Auto-Battle in a boss fight. It's practically suicide.

ATB Bar  -------The Active Time Battle (henceforth shortened to ATB) system was introduced inthe original FINAL FANTASY IV for the Super Famicom system. It has since beenmodified so that you can see more of what's going on.

The bar will be totally empty and then fill up with gray. Once it is full, itwill change to yellow and you will have the chance to take a turn. Once youchoose your command, the ATB guage will remain yellow but it will fill up againwith red. Once the red guage fills, your battle command is taken.

More powerful attacks will require more time to execute. The red-on-yellow barwill take longer to fill if your attack is more powerful.

The Menu Screen is accessed by pressing the X Button outside of battle. Here isthe basic layout of the sub-menus you'll find in the Menu Screen:

     - Inventory - Magic - Equipment - Abilities

     - Status - Party - Settings - Quicksave - Save

And here's the lowdown on all of the sub-menus:

      O--------------O  | Inventory |  O--------------O

Rejoice FINAL FANTASY IV fans! Gone are the days where you could only carry 48different items at once (that's a measely 4752 Potions at once)! Now you cancarry 236 different items (since, y'know, that's how many different items thereare in the game).

There's three menu items in the Inventory.

-> Use - Use an item. Those that are grayed out either cannot be used outside  of battle or are equipment items. -> Sort - Sorts items. There are three types of sorting options: with

consumables on top, weapons on top or armor on top -> Key Items - Any story-based items or Augments you find will be shown here.

Note that you can sort items manually by selecting Use and then selecting theitem once (press A once). Then go to where you want the item and hit A again toswap the two positions.

      O---------O  | Magic |  O---------O

You can view any character's magic spells with this sub-menu. You will selectthe character you wish to view (any characters who have no magic are grayedout) and then you can arrange their spells in any order you wish.

You can view each spell, its effect, how much MP it costs and if you can use itoutside of battle, the spell will be shown in white (otherwise the name will begrayed out).

      O-------------O  | Equipment |  O-------------O

You can view any character's equipment with this sub-menu. You will select thecharacter you wish to view and then you can view or change their equipment. There are three options available.

-> Equip - Equip your gear manually. This is useful if you want your mages to  have a higher Intellect or Spirit with less-powerful equipment. -> Remove - This will remove the selected gear. -> Optimize - The game will determine the highest attack or defense with the  equipment you have and equip the character to those stats. This does not  take Spirit or Intellect into account, nor does it include Magic Defense or  Evasion.

      O-------------O  | Abilities |  O-------------O

As you progress through the game and acquire Augments, you will be able tocustomize your character's battle menu in any way you choose. You can choose upto four different abilities (Item cannot be removed) and one Auto-Battleability that will take effect when Auto-Battle is enabled.

      O----------O  | Status |

      O----------O

This menu will show you all your stats, equipment, equipped abilities and knownabilities. You can scroll through the known abilities and see what each onedoes.

Here's a breakdown of all the stats shown:

-Strength: Influences the effectiveness of physical attacks.-Speed: Speed at which characters take action.

  • 8/10/2019 Walkthrough Final Fantasy 4

    12/354

-Stamina: Manner by which HP increases.-Intellect: Effectiveness of Black Magic.-Spirit: Effectiveness of White Magic.

-Attack: This is the character's attack power (influenced by Strength and the  weapon equipped).-Accuracy: Probability of hitting when attacking.-Defense: This is the character's defensive power (influenced by the equipment  being worn).-Evasion: Probability of evading an attack.-Magic Defense: This is the character's magical defense power (influenced by  the equipment being worn)-Magic Evasion: Probability of evading a magic attack.

      O---------O  | Party |  O---------O

In this submenu you can switch the party lineup. You can use the "Reposition"option to change the lineup in any way that you wish. Use the "Invert" optionand you can change the front and back row.

So if you have two physical fighters and one mage, you can set the lineup

accordingly so that both physical fighters take up two slots in the front row.If you suddenly gain a third physical fighter you can use the Invert option toput three slots in the front row and two slots in the back.

      O------------O  | Settings |  O------------O

In this menu you can set the ATB to either Active or Wait. You can also set thebattle speed, default movement, movie subtitles and voices.

Be sure to hit "Accept" when you're finished configuring your game settings.

      O-------------O  | Quicksave |  O-------------O

As the name implies, this option will quickly save your game and then quit it.You don't have to be at a Save Point or on the Overworld to Quicksave.

However, once you reload your Quicksave, you lose the Quicksave, so keep thatin mind. You can't depend on a Quicksave to save your ass if you get pwned.

      O--------O  | Save |  O--------O

If you are at a Save Point or on the Overworld, you can save your game. Doingso will save your progress (duh) so you can:

    1) Go to sleep.2) See #1 for details.

In previous versions of FINAL FANTASY IV, you would talk to a Fat Chocobo tostore your items since you could only carry 48 at any given moment. However, since those item restrictions are now gone, the Fat Chocobo serves a differentpurpose.

In FINAL FANTASY IV DS, the Fat Chocobo will allow you to customize and trainWhyt, view the Bestiary, view events via the Event Viewer or listen to musicvia the Music Box.

To find a Fat Chocobo, you require either Gysahl Greens where it smells ofchocobos. With Greens, you need to find a place that smells like Chocobos. Theeasiest place to find these areas are in Chocobo Forests, which can be found inthe following places:

    - Southwest from Baron- Northeast from Fabul- South from Mount Ordeals

    - North from Troia- East from Troia

In addition, there's a Fat Chocobo spot inside the Dwarf Castle (it's just eastfrom the Infirmary). There is also a mechanical Fat Chocobo on the Lunar Whale.

To actually make the Fat Chocobo appear, simply go into one of these areas andgo to an area that looks like a straw nest. Face it and press A. 1. SAVE!!!!! I cannot emphasize this enough. Save early, safe often, SAVE  BEFORE ENTERING A BIG BATTLE. AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SAVE ON DIFFERENT  FILES!! Through the process of saving, you'll save yourself a LOT of  headache and a LOT of lost time (like your entire game if you save on one  file and somehow royally mess it up). Whether you save at a Save Sphere  (FFX) or at an Inn (FF1), you should save whenever you can. In FINAL  FANTASY IV DS,you can ONLY SAVE on Save Points or the Overworld and you'll  probably want to save on the Save Points about 99% of the time. Trust me on  this, even the BEST FF players can mess up every once in a while and lose  their entire party every once in a while. Whatever you do, do NOT rely on  your "Quicksave" since I can personally tell you it's not a 100% guarantee.  Rely on your cold hard saves if you're ever in doubt.

    2. TALK TO EVERYONE!! They'll (usually) give you clues as to where you should  go, who to talk to, etc. Plus, some of them even blurt out funny quotes,  like the infamous "This guy are sick", or perhaps they'll provide clues to  hidden treasures. Who knows? All you gotta do is talk to them.

    3. LEVEL UP!! Unless you're doing a low-level game, you (probably) want to make  your characters more powerful than the guys they fight. It's not smart to  take your 500 HP characters into a battle against an enemy with 900,000 HP  and an attack of 30,000, and it doesn't matter how high your evasion is.  To do this, just fight the majority of your battles instead of running away  all the time. If you find yourself getting your ass handed to you each and

every battle, then yeah, you might want to backtrack and beat up weaker  enemies until you level up a few levels.

    4. CURE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND! Seriously here, Cure/Cura/Curaga/Curaja will most  likely be used more than all your other spells combined. Once you learn the  higher-level Cure spell, you'll probably want to put it close to the top of  your magic list.

You shouldn't need me around to watch the intro; it's rather self-explanatory.Until you gain control, just watch the scenes; you'll learn that Cecil of

Baron takes the Water Crystal from the people of Mysidia because the King ofBaron has decreed that the Mysidians know too much about the Crystal. Neitherthe wizards of Mysidia or the subsequent monsters that attacked stood a chanceagainst Cecil. At any rate ... once you regain control, it's time to start youradventure.

You can find a PHOENIXDOWN (check north of the Weaponsmith/Armorer), a GOLD NEEDLE (in a bush next totwo flowers) and a PHOENIX DOWN (in a bush southwest from the Gold Needle).

The Weaponsmith and Armorer are currently closed, but the Sundries is open for

Keep inmind that if you purchase four or more items at a time (like 4+ Potions all atonce), the store will give you a discount. This holds true for every Shop, sokeep that in the back of your mind.

The Mist Dragon has two main attacks: its physical attack and its Freezing Mistattack. Its physical attack nothing to laugh at but the Freezing Mist caneasily shave off 100+ HP. However, Freezing Mist is only a counter-attack that

  • 8/10/2019 Walkthrough Final Fantasy 4

    36/354

the Mist Dragon will use when you attack it in its Mist form.

I suggest you hold off on each attack until the previous animation completes. It's easy to mess up and have a character attack or land on the Mist form, which is deadly to your team's health.

When the battle first starts, have Kain Jump and Cecil use Darkness. Once Kainlands, have him attack normally. From my experience, you CAN use Jump twice andhave it work. However, it can be risky since there is a chance that you willhave him land on the Mist.

Eventually the Mist Dragon will turn into Mist. STOP ATTACKING at this pointand use the time to heal up your team. If you attack the Mist Dragon while it'sin Mist form, it will counter with Freezing Mist, which can easily shave off100+ HP.

Once the Mist Dragon turns back into its Dragon form, have Kain Jump again andCecil reuse Darkness if it has worn off. Again, once Kain lands, have himattack normally.

The Mist Dragon is much trickier than before but certainly not impossible.

      Rydia  Cecil  [empty]  [empty]  [empty]

Even with this, Rydia starts at Lv. 7 and is incredibly weak. Despite the factthat it seems like she has a giant "KICK MY ASS" sign on her, she will also getKO'd very fast (or it'll seem like it anyways).

Before moving on to the next area, you'll want to level up Rydia a few timesfor the sake of helping her help herself (I suggest getting her to at LEAST Lv.10). Rydia comes with the best equipment you have access to; the only thing shelacks is a helmet.

Also, one more thing you should do. Rydia can make great use of the Rod shecomes with. Go into the Abilities submenu and select Rydia. Press A while onthe Attack command and you should default to Items. Press Right on the D-pad

and then select her Rod and press A. The Rod comes with a special spell calledMage Arrows that are an excellent substitute for her Attack command (which sheshouldn't be using in the back row anyways). Rydia comes equipped with a Rod, Leather Clothing and an Silver Armlet. You'reprobably thinking "Man that stuff sucks" right now, aren't you? And you'd beright, since her equipment is pretty low-grade. Nonetheless, it's about as goodas you're going to get for now (spending 160 Gil on a Staff is really a waste),so just take it with a grain of salt and move on. If you REALLY want, you canbuy a Leather Cap.

On the other hand, you'll be getting another party member soon, and he comespretty poorly equipped. Buying a Leather Cap will benefit this character thatwill be joining you in a moment.

I also suggest purchasing an Emergency Exit or two if you have some spare cashlying around. They do come in handy for the price they are.

Head straight north to pick up a POTION and a MAIDEN'S KISS. Backtrack to theentrance and head west across the bridge. Jag south a bit to nab a TENT, thengo north across the bridge and talk to the Old Man there. After the dialogue,Sage Tellah will join your party.

Tellah will default to the back row unless you have changed the lineup. If youpurchased a Leather Cap, you can equip it on Tellah as well. They'll fill theblank area in his equipment and boost his stats.

from where he joined you. However, if you cross the bridge to the east, you canfollow the path and descend into the water. From there, you can go up thewaterfall and pick up the ETHER in the chest there. Head back down the smallwaterfall and head west until you reach a waterfall that's fairly wide. Go intothe left side of it to find an X-POTION, a DRY ETHER and a PHOENIX DOWN. Thefirst two are extremely rare at this point in the game, and you probablyshouldn't use them unless you're in an extreme pinch.

Head back to where you met Tellah and head north, enter the doorway to reachthe next floor.

== Underground Waterway, South - B2 == [100% Bonus - 5 Antidotes]Head north across the bridge and descend into the water. Head slightly south-west and up some steps to find a POTION. Hop back into the water and continuesouth and up a different set of steps. Continue on west and pick up the ETHER,then head south across the bridge and follow the path into a door.

Inside, Tellah will give you a crash course on Save Points. I highly suggestutilizing this Save Point considering you get a freebie Tent use.

Upon exiting the room, go east across the bridge and head north to get an ICEROD. Head south, descending into the water, and head slightly east and up intothe door, which leads to the next floor.
