Gutter Guardians is a program for school groups across the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges area which encourages school groups to improve the health of our local waterways. On Friday, May 1, the Year 4 and 5 classes became Gutter Guardians. Rooms 12 and 13 went to Fredrick Street and col-lected a total of 84 kilograms of leaves and dirt. Rooms 10, 10a and 11 went to Edwin Terrace and collected a total of 127 kilograms. The reason we swept the footpaths and gutters and then collected the leaves was to stop the leaves going into the storm water drain. So what, who cares if the leaves go down the drain? Well, when leaves go into the storm water drains they can block the drains. These leaves are then transported with the water to the nearest river and may eventually end up in the ocean. The leaves can stop or slow the natural flow of our rivers and this may lead to stagnant, smelly water. Leaves can block out the sunlight and this makes it hard for plants to grow. As leaves decom-pose they don’t create oxygen any more, they use up oxygen. This reduces the amount of oxygen available for animals that live in the water such as fish, frogs and macro-invertebrates. This may leads to the extinction of many species of animals and plants. Finally as the leaves break down into small-er pieces they can make the water dark. This makes it hard for some aquatic animals to find food and shelter. By Sophie and Maya Year 5, Room 12
