VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET)VET Applications

VET applications for 2019 are open. Students can collect the application paperwork from Lesley or Michelle in Student Services. The paperwork must be returned to the VET Coordinator (Ms Angie Corbo), and a meeting must be organised with students and their parent/caregiver to finalise the process. Returning of the paperwork does not secure a position in the VET course. If convenient, VET application and subject selection meetings could occur at the same time. If you would like to do this, please book a double meeting.

Subject Information and Career Expo On Wednesday, 22 August, Mark Oliphant College held its annual Subject Information and Career Expo. We were fortunate to have over 22 companies and Registered Training Organisations exhibiting as well as the major universities. Exhibitors were very impressed by the quality of questions that were being asked by our students and the enthusiasm that was shown when exploring future career pathways and study options. It was great to see students sharing this experience with their family, friends and staff, making good use of the experts present.

A big thank you to all the attendees including businesses, training organisations, teachers and the students themselves who helped make the night a success.

Angie Corbo, VET Coordinator

University of Adelaide Science Academy News In Week 7, Year 10 and 11 students who registered in the University of Adelaide Science Academy will be treated to a visit from Carolyn, who is a STEM educator working with the university. She has studied animal science and will be talking about her passion for animal anatomy and physiology and the work she does researching animal diseases and immunology. Carolyn will also be talking about how the subjects she studied at high school helped in her own pathway and led to her dream career. Carolyn will provide advice to our students on how they can achieve their dream careers. For more information on the Science Academy please see Ms Thompson. Angie Corbo

National Science Week Week 5 marked the celebration of National Science Week. This year’s theme was “Game Changers and Change Makers”. Throughout the week there were Science based activities offered to students across the site. It was fantastic to see Senior Years students not only participating in these activities (congratulations to our quiz winners), but offering their support to teachers as well. Many Senior students volunteered to help set up / pack up activities as well as become mentors to support both Primary Years and Middle Years students participate. To help celebrate Science Week, the NASSSA group held their first ever “Engineering Challenge”. The night was a great success with both Middle Years and Senior Years students representing MOC. Congratulations to all involved.

Steph Wotton, STEM Coordinator

STEM NEWS

EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAMSLots has been happening for students both in and out of the school with many big events happening.

Operation Flinders – Nine students have just return from their eight day trek through the Flinders Rangers. Students explored this beautiful wilderness while learning about leadership, team work and personal development. These students will be continuing these learnings through the Youth Opportunities course running in Term 4.

Pedal Prix – Our students have just completed race two, a six hour event at Victoria Park. Students are now gearing up for the final race of the season at Murray Bridge at the end of Week 9 where they will be racing for a full 24 hours. Good luck to the two teams involved.

Games club – each Monday in the library we have a games club where students learn and play a variety of card and board games. This club is open to all and the students are enjoying and developing strategy and game play.

Craig Brown, Executive Leader Years 7-12

Austalian National History Competition 2018 Last May, 21 of our students from Years 8-10 participated in the Australian National History Competition. The Competition involves answering 50 multiple choice questions in 45 minutes. The questions are based on the Australian Curriculum for the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS).

The following results were achieved by our students:

Distinction: Anyang Ateny

Merit: Charlotte Slapp-Paterson, Ella Frampton, Thomas Jebb, Orson Manning, Brayden James, Taleah Marr, Yuri Icarro

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION (HPE) UPDATEDuring HPE in Term 3, all students in Year 10 have been undertaking sexual health and relationships education through SHINE SA. The learning intention is all about students being able to evaluate strategies and resources to manage changes, the impact of wellbeing on relationships and enhancing their own safety and health. They have done this through learning about respectful relationships, gender, power, safe choices and preventative strategies.

In Year 11 PE classes students have been focusing on invasion games during Term 3. This change in approach from a traditional sport by sport method allows students far more opportunities to transfer movement concepts to new and challenging situations, which is a focus of the new SACE PE program beginning in 2019.

In Year 12 PE classes students have been working collaboratively to apply solutions to movement challenges. For example, coming up with solutions to problems faced during the game of soccer. The focus of these activities is to improve their collaboration and learning which are two of the capabilities we focus on in the Integrated Learning nature of this subject.

Our Year 11 Outdoor Education students have recently returned from a camp in Renmark where the focus was on building independence, teamwork and environmental awareness.

Students went on a 3 day kayaking/canoeing journey to achieve these learning outcomes in the best possible environment.

Luke Smoker, HPE

SENIOR YEARS SPORTThis Term, Mark Oliphant College students have represented the school at netball and 5-a-side soccer carnivals. On Tuesday (Week 4), we sent four senior teams (2 girls and 2 boys) to play in the 5-a-side soccer carnival at Salisbury East High School. All teams had some success throughout the day, in particular, our A grade boys who are waiting on other results to see if they progress to the state carnival after finishing 3rd in an epic penalty shoot-out. We also sent a boy’s netball team to the carnival at Argana Park on Friday (Week 4). Considering a large number of the boys hadn’t played netball before, they played well enough to be competitive throughout the day.

The final sporting event for the Term is a girl’s basketball carnival in Week 9. We will be sending one senior years girl’s team to the event.

Thanks to all the students who have attended the events and good luck to those later in the Term.

Matt Ames, School Sports Coordinator

ICE FACTORAs part of the Ice Factor Program, 5 MOC students were invited to go to Government House to meet the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency, Hue Van Li. As the Governor is the patron of the Ice Factor Program, His Excellency and his wife invited Ice Factor students to his house to receive awards from Ice Factor Coordinator, Marie Shaw, QC. Latisha Bond, George Williams, AJ David, Wilfred Nagbe and Riley Hawthorn represented MOC Mavericks very well and enjoyed their experience. Thanks to Ellie Simmons and Mr Ames for attending with the students. Special thanks to Peter Shearer Menswear in Adelaide for providing the suits for our boys to wear.

ARC NEWSThroughout the Term, Senior Area Resource Centre (ARC) students have been participating in a group work experience opportunity at Bedford Industries. Students have been sorting, folding, stacking, packaging and labelling a variety of items at the Elizabeth facility. Additionally, students are building life skills by learning to use public transportation by walking to the train station each Monday, then using a combination of train and bus transport to return to the college. Our students have impressed the leadership at Bedford and have been complimented several times by their Personal Training Officer. Well done guys! You have shown excellent teamwork, perseverance, and prudence and have shown exemplary behaviour and social skills. You make your teacher and support staff very proud!

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIESTeachers across the site are currently working through some professional development opportunities including the completion of the University of Canberra’s Disability for Education Standards training. This course provides teachers the opportunity to learn how to cater for and work with students with disabilities.

Teachers are also working through the process of completing students One Child One Plans (OCOP). Please keep an eye out for these coming home with students for you to read over and sign or a phone call from teachers to organise a time to come in and discuss.

Tegan Cox, Students with Disability Coordinator

RESEARCH PRACTICES This Semester all Year 10 students are studying a new subject called Research Practices. The purpose of this subject is to prepare students for the compulsory SACE subject Research Project which students complete in Year 11. The Research Practices subject focuses on core research skills such as: identifying bias, accuracy, currency and relevance in sources. As part of their last task the students will also begin the process of selecting and refining a topic for their Year 11 Research Project.

Year 11 Research Project - Semester 1 Results We congratulate our Year 11 students who have successfully completed their Research Project. This year we have seen a significant improvement in our results including an increase in the number of students achieving ‘A’ grades. We congratulate Keisha Wall, Mikhaela Icarro, Julia Leeflang, Crystal Carpenter, and Chloe Roy who achieved an overall ‘A’ grade and Bonnie Mosley who achieved an overall ‘A-‘ grade. We also had a number of students achieve ‘A+’ grades for one or more assessment tasks for the first time. Feedback from Universities indicates that students who achieve high results in Research Project develop the core research skills necessary to be successful in a range of university courses. We congratulate the students and teachers for their achievements. Daniel Quinlivan, Leader Learner Engagement Year 10/11

ARTS NEWSArts for All Initiative A group of 35 MOC students participated in the annual NASSSA initiative run by the Adelaide Festival Theatre. The students from Years 8-11 now have greater exposure to all areas of the Visual and Performing Arts from this opportunity. This year students saw a live performance of More Guilty Than the Poet which incorporates music, dance, theatre and acrobatics to reflect on the rejection yet attraction to ideals of our own mortality and how this influences our day to day life.

Students were provided with a ticket, private bus as well as lunch which we had sitting on the grass overlooking the River Torrens on a nice sunny day.

Thank you to Mrs Cox and Ms Stevenson for coming with us and Mr Calnan for his support of the Arts.

Battle of the Bands Once again this year, MOC students will be participating in Battle of the Bands. This platform invites all NASSSA schools to showcase musical performances, where students can present their renditions of songs or their own original music and lyrics. The winner for the evening receives a chance to record their songs professionally in a live recording studio!! Our band has been rehearsing countless hours for the last term, so it would be wonderful if you could come and support our students, Friday evening on 14th September at Northern Sound System from 6pm onwards!!! Hope to see you there!!

MOC 2018 Arts ShowcaseIn Week 5 of this Term, the Arts Faculty put on our first (and hopefully annual) Arts Showcase! We had work submitted from the Children’s Centre, Early Years, Primary Years, Middle Years and Senior Years as well as from the ARC. Over 300 works of art were presented, consisting of clay or wire sculptures, watercolour and acrylic paintings, pastel and graphite drawings, cyanotypes, polaroid’s, design pieces, digital photos as well as lino prints and much more. During the course of the two days the exhibit was open, we had... 16 classes through for a tour, one finished piece of Pollock art, over 200 guests and even had the Mayor come for a visit!!

There was an abundance of wonderful feedback about the quality of student work and many students were very proud and brought their families and friends to see their work on display. A big congratulations to students, on a job well done and for all their hard work.

SRC NEWSThe Secondary Student Representative Council at MOC has been working on a number of projects to benefit the College and its students. We have been taking on concerns of the student body and discussing what can be done about the issues, with consideration of the college’s Site Improvement Plan.

Sub-committees have been implemented to ensure we are working efficiently in the following matters:

• Code of Conduct - Developing a new code of conduct that students, teachers and parents have to abide by.

• Anti-Bullying - There have been a number of cases raised about bullying in the school. The first step to addressing this was to survey all students to report any problem spots in the school. This was completed in Week 5 this Term.

• 2019 SRC Structure - Changing the College’s house structure. At the moment, the house structure (Douglas, Newton, Peachy, Beumont) is primarily implemented on Sports Day. As of 2019, the SRC will have house representatives, all of which will be leadership roles in the student body.

• Formal/Year 12 Jackets - The formal committee have started designs for the 2019 Year 12 Jacket. All students are able to send in designs, all of which are to be voted on. The formal committee is also excited to get started on other upcoming events for Year 12 in 2019.

• Rubbish and Recycling - After noticing a problem in the school, the students in this committee have brainstormed ideas to reduce the littering in the school. Along with this, the committee would like to begin a recycling initiative.

SRC Organised Event - ARA Fashion Show 13th September - all day - There are three sessions across the school day, all of which include: • Food provided •Local musician/rapper • Burundian Drummer Performance/s • Keynote Speaker

This show encourages all students, teachers and parents to attend. It will be held on ‘R U Okay?’ Day. This encourages students to have meaningful conversations and make genuine connections with the people around you. Sandra Thompson, Teacher
