Local body elections on the way

by Denise Gunn

Thirty-eight candidates are vying for 14 regional councillor seats on the Waikato Regional Council (WRC) in this year’s triennial election.

Seats are available in the six general and two Maori  constituencies. Candidate nominations closed on Friday, August 16. A draw, conducted in the presence of a Justice of the Peace, was held to determine which order candidates’ names would appear on voting papers.

Two electoral systems for local government elections, first past the post (FPP) and the single transferable vote (STV) are offered in accordance with the Local Electoral Act 2011. The WRC will hold the 2013 triennial election under the FPP electoral system. This was determined at a council meeting and publicly notified in 2011.

Established in 1989, the WRC was formed through amalgamating 40 previous authorities that included catchment boards, united councils, noxious plants authorities, pest destruction boards and drainage boards. A large proportion of the WRC’s role is managing the region’s natural resources.

To be eligible to vote in the council’s election, voters must be enrolled

on either the resident or ratepayer electoral roll for the Waikato  region. Voting documents, along with a reply paid envelope will be posted to electors in mid-September. Voting papers need to be sent back by noon on Saturday, October 12.

The WRC strongly encourages voters to have their say at election time, given the importance of the many issues the council deals with.

For more election information phone WRC on freephone 0800 800 401 or visit www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/elections.

Redeveloped events centre will enhance Waikato A & P Show

by Denise Gunn

The newly redeveloped Claudelands Event Centre will enable the Waikato A & P Society to hold a larger, brighter and improved show.

The $70 million overhaul of the centre on its 30ha site includes several new buildings, an arena, a relocated and restored grandstand building and function facility, as well as roading and infrastructure.

Scheduled for November, the Waikato A & P Show will utilise these undercover areas for extra trade, displays and entertainment. Show organisers hope this will encourage more exhibitors.

The Waikato A & P Show was established in 1892.

“People used to come in droves competing with their cattle, and there would be rows and rows of cars and farmers,” said show secretary and administration manager Trish Lloyd.

“It was the show of the year.”

During the revamp of the Claudelands Event Centre, the show was reduced to mainly stock competitions. Now that the refurbishment is completed,

trials demonstration, Canadian-style cheerleading, and Rosie the Cow kids’ show. A farmyard petting area will be housed in the Beef Pavilion building and children’s pony rides will be available outside on the grassed area.

The Waikato A & P Show will be held from November 1–3 from 9am–4pm daily. Entry fee is $5 per person aged five years and over. Family tickets are $15. Entry is free on Friday, November 1.

show organisers have worked hard to introduce new competitions and the Schools Farm Walk Programme.

The Schools Farm Walk Programme, which is to be held on Friday, November 1, encourages rural and urban communities to unite in teaching what farming involves and ensure longevity of the farming industry. The walk will cover a longer distance this year.

Some of the special features at this year’s show will include a model milking cow, poultry and pigeon show, gun dog

NUFFIELD SCHOLAR

Following several months travelling around the globe, learning about agricultural issues and researching the use of social media to promote the New Zealand brand, Nuffi eld scholar Sophie Stanley returns to the Waikato in October.

Sophie grew up on her parent’s sheep and beef finishing farm in Rangitaiki. She graduated

from Massey University in 2008 with degrees in agricultural science and economics. For the past four and a half years, Sophie has worked as an ANZ agri-manager, based in Morrinsville.

When Sophie first learnt she had been selected for a Nuffield scholarship, she said she was absolutely ecstatic and couldn’t quite believe it.

“I found out I had been selected by phone call a few hours after I hopped off the plane from my interview in Wellington.”

Sophie had completed the Kellogg’s Rural Leadership programme that same

year with her research project centred on the importance of ‘Brand New Zealand’ in value-added primary projects in Asian markets. Her Nuffield scholarship has given her the opportunity to take this research a step further.

“My research topic is based on communication, particularly harnessing social media use in the agricultural industry,” she said.

Sophie has been investigating three levels of communication. These include — farmer to farmer networking through AgChat Forums both nationally and internationally, farmer to consumer interaction with the story of farming being retold to consumers and farmer to industry interaction taking into account

how social media can be used for gathering and sharing knowledge.

“The farming industry is constantly being challenged by a number of issues, which sometimes can be misrepresented in mainstream media or by activists,” said Sophie.

“I had followed some success stories from the UK and States around farmer action created by Twitter connectivity, including the #sosdairy campaign, and #buybritish (produce) campaign, and thought New Zealand had great potential to create a voice on this medium as well.

“Given farming can also be a lonely occupation sometimes, connectivity via Twitter and other mediums enables

the world set to increase population to nine billion people, we need food.

“Rural infrastructure with broadband and cellphone coverage may limit some potential use but overall there are many opportunities,” she said.

During her international travels, Sophie has endeavoured to learn more about agriculture from a global perspective as well as opportunities in the social media space.

So far she has found that social media has significant value in translating the farmer’s voice, particularly in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom.

“Communication is important in the agricultural industry because people have always been concerned about where and how their food is produced.”

Sophie’s travels also included attending the Contemporary Scholars Conference in Canada with 60 other Nuffield Scholars from around the world. The two-week conference allowed scholars to network with each and listen to a variety of speakers from different  industries. On her return to New Zealand, Sophie plans to become involved in more leadership roles within the industry.

Sophie said social media use in the New Zealand agricultural industry is still in its infancy compared to other nations around the world.

“With agriculture being New Zealand’s largest export earner, we need to ensure that we continue to attract talented, innovative young people to the industry, and with the rural/urban gap continuously being challenged, it is important to connect with our consumers so that we can create a positive food story. “I had miniature white roses. In those days we didn’t even know lilies existed,” says Anne.

In the almost three decades since their big day the Blewdens have more than made up for their ignorance by becoming one of the country’s premier lily producers. They left teaching jobs in Taupo to produce 1.2 million lily stems per year in Cambridge. How did they get there? “Trial and error and the odd expensive mistake,” says David.

In the early 1990s Anne and David were both looking for a change of career, so the opportunity to get into growing lilies was timely.

They established their first greenhouse in 1993, a change inspired by a friend growing Asparagus and Calla Lilies.

“That got us interested in horticulture. We even tua l l y purchased a 10-acre asparagus block off my friend and built our first small greenhouse.”

“We trialled both Callas and Asiatic and Oriental lilies. We eventually settled on the Asiatic and Orientals and went from there, learning along the way.”

After 20 years in the industry and no regrets, they are now one of the largest and most respected producers in New Zealand.

Rose Rees-Owen

When Anne and David Blewden got married back in 1986 there were no lilies in their wedding bouquets.

“We love lilies and growing them. However,

we could just as easily be producing something else.”

As well as selling to florists across the country, 1% of their lilies are exported. In addition they have a flourishing website, with customer orders flooding in 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The couple employs six full time staff and two part-timers. The duo have well defined roles in the business. “David

is the managing director and is responsible for strategic planning and finance,” says Anne. “I perform some administrative tasks and am responsible for assessing new varieties for suitability. We both are also responsible for marketing and developing positive relationships with our many customers throughout New Zealand.”

Their two daughters have worked in the nursery during summer holidays. But neither has shown any inclination to get

involved permanently. One works as a civil engineer, while the other is doing a double

degree in Law and Arts at Victoria University.

Anne and David aim to be chemical free wherever possible and only use chemicals as a last resort. “Wherever possible we use non-chemical systems. We apply high levels of beneficial fungi and bacteria to our soils to control soil diseases and use a parasitic wasp to control aphids. Lately we have been using compost tea with great results.”

After two decades in the lily business neither Anne nor David has any regrets. They say the business suits their lifestyle. “For us our business is about being profitable, producing a return on investment, producing a product that

brings happiness to others, and allows us to enjoy a lifestyle of our choice,” says David. “We love lilies and growing them. However, we could just as easily be producing something  else.” While demand for lilies is fairly consistent throughout the year, it peaks with Mother’s Day.

“Flowers for Mum on Mother’s Day is as Kiwi as Hokey Pokey Ice Cream and the All Blacks,” says David.

There is no local national organisation of lily growers, so David and Anne work independently. Running 1.1ha of climate-controlled greenhouses and dealing with thousands of customer orders is a full-on job, so there are few chances to take holidays.

But this year is an exception, with Anne and David heading for Europe. “We are going to the Dutch Lily Days in Holland to meet with breeders and bulb suppliers as well as to check out some new machinery. We will also take the opportunity to have a holiday, visit relatives in London and Northern Ireland and take a cruise around the Mediterranean,” says Anne.

“We are fortunate to have a really good staff and a production manager who runs the nursery on a day-to-day basis. However, this trip will be the longest we have been away from the nursery in 20 years. The Internet makes being away for a long period much easier.”

Ci lantro Cheese is the brainchild of two former

Ruakura research scientists, Mônica Senna Salerno and Jenny Oldham, who began experimenting at home with cheese making and it all took off from there.

While Jenny is a true-blue King Country girl, Mônica hails from Brazil via Italy and together the two brought a mix of expertise to the cheese platter.

Coming from Europe and South America, Mônica assumed New Zealand with its

was born when the two were looking at redundancy about three years ago.

“I had a cheese making kit someone had given me and I joked that we should start making cheese. As it turns out, AgResearch had some vacant space, so we decided to give it a go.”

She says Cilantro specialises in artisan, hand crafted cheese utilising locally sourced GE-free goat’s and sheep’s milk whilst having the smallest carbon footprint possible.

“What we are trying to do at Cilantro is to create wonderful artisan cheese, but also keep experimenting on variations, utilising traditional methods. Right now, our Chèvre is the Cuisine Champion Goat Cheese of 2012 — and we are very proud of that.”

Having a strong background in related science Jenny says really helped them. However, not everything they design works the way they want or expect and they sometimes have a selection of cheeses they call their ‘Ay Caramba!’ line.

“Just about all the cheese that doesn’t work out the way we expect is still very edible and as long as people know that when they

buy it, it is fine and they love it. But we do learn a lot from these, and our major successes often come from these experiments.”

Jenny says the whole operation is geared towards the environment, with the GE free goat and sheep’s milk being sourced very close by and always collected when it is as fresh as possible, which she says certainly adds to the unique result.

“We pasteurise the very fresh milk in small lots and this enables sterilisation while keeping all the original elements of it, and this all adds to the final product. Even the spent whey is used by a local organic free-range pig farmer and of course during the actual cheese making and maturing, no preservatives or stabilisers are added.”

Jenny says while much of the new cheese can be consumed straight away, other types need to mature under quite specific conditions around humidity and temperature in order to bring out their unique flavours and texture that have made the brands so popular.

Keeping it all in the family, Mônica’s brother — a graphic design artist — has designed the logo and packaging along with their comprehensive website and Jenny says Fridays are spent with the vacuum packing machine packing and labelling for the weekend’s sales.

Cilantro Cheeses are at the Cambridge Market fortnightly and at Hamilton’s Markets every week, at a few selected retailers and restaurants around the area and at Farro in Auckland. And of course you can buy direct from the shop at the Ruakura Centre, in the MIRINZ building on East Street, Hamilton.

They are a must buy and quite addictive!

Jenny says making artisan cheese is a very individual process

The Cilantro cheese making process is not much bigger than a home kitchen, which adds to its unique flavour and style

Minerals are essential Minerals are inorganic, naturally occurring

compounds. There are over 70 compounds classi ed as minerals of which about 20 are identi ed as essential for our bodies to function.

If we have inadequate mineral intake, or our mineral intake is out of balance, this can have disastrous effects on our health.

While food from the sea has excellent mineral balance, many of our soils are de cient in minerals. NZ soils contain very low levels of the cancer protecting trace mineral selenium. This is especially important for those in the South Island as the bread produced from Canterbury grain has low selenium. The NZ Government agency MedSafe (2103) commented “South Island bread is made predominantly with wheat grown locally in low-selenium soils.”

Some minerals have multiple functions and low levels can cause many problems. For example zinc is known to participate in over 300 enzymes. Low zinc levels can cause diverse problems from poor immune function, eye problems, hair loss and skin problems.

Many people take mineral supplements to maintain health or as part of a treatment programme for speci c conditions. These can be single minerals, such as iron, iodine or calcium, small groups such as magnesium, calcium and potassium or as multi-mineral complexes.

My view is the single or small groups of minerals should only be given under professional guidance. For example single iron supplements should only be taken after blood tests show low iron levels. The same applies to iodine and some other minerals.

For most people, most of the time the best way to get minerals from supplements is as modest dose multi-mineral preparation. This will ensure you are getting the minerals in the correct form and correct balance. My preference is for chelated minerals whereby the mineral is bonded to amino acids (the building blocks of protein) to provide optimum absorption with the minimum risk of tummy upsets. Give me a call if you need further information.

WANT TO INSURE THE FUTURE OF YOUR FARM AND SAVE MONEY ON YOUR FERT BILL?

Pasture Renovation and Protectionby Aidan Lett, Nitrosol

A D V E RT O R I A L

To renovate and protect your pasture it is absolutely essential that you think about the soil biology.

The easiest way to begin that thought process is to dig a few holes and count the numbers of earthworms.

At the same time break open each sod and examine the root depth of the pasture, 2 simple measurements which tell you a lot about what is happening in your soil.

If the average root depth is less than 75mm and you have less than 5–8 worms per spadeful then you can be sure that you will lose your pasture very quickly in a dry spell or drought.

fertiliser, made from good old organic blood and bone, sourced from sh processing operations.

Begin this process and within 12 months you will see a huge increase in the root depth of your pasture, an earthworm count that will amaze you and subsequently better results from your stock.

Use this process over two to three years and you can expect to see root depths of up to 300mm and earthworm numbers around 25–30 per spadeful.

Now stand back and see how your pasture looks in a dry spell!

And during wet periods the soil won’t drain either!

Address the soil biology with the right programme and you can look forward to your pasture hanging on far longer in tough conditions and you will have a more nutritious pasture that will produce noticeably better results from your stock.

So how do you achieve better soil biology? It would take many more words than we have available in this article to give a detailed description, however we can offer a few clues.

Brie y, you need to be sure your soil calcium levels are optimised for the biology to function effectively and ef ciently, and that is where lime comes in.

PhloLime sprayable rapid action lime is many times more ef cient and effective than Ag-Lime, due to its tiny particle size.

Then you need to apply Nitrosol Oceanic, a biological liquid suspension

Copper in soil, animals and plantsby Dr Tim Jenkins

Molybdenum is a vital trace element for enzymes in nitrogen fixation in micro-organisms (including the rhizobia bacteria in legume nodules), and nitrogen metabolism and a range of other functions in many micro-organisms and all plants and animals.

Certain crops are more commonly limited by low molybdenum levels — these include cauliflower, brassicas generally, lettuce, onion, beets, carrots, parsnips and citrus. Deficiency symptoms can include low nitrogen levels and nitrogen deficiency yellowing as well as cupping of leaves.

Tota l molybdenum contents in soil can vary widely between soil types with a range of 0.2 to around 2.5 ppm being typically seen in New Zealand soils. Availability of the molybdenum is greatly affected by soil pH with acid soils having greater ‘lock-up’ of the element by adsorption onto soil minerals. With a higher soil pH eg through liming, availability of molybdenum can improve. Plants need hardly any molybdenum and can generally tolerate very high molybdenum before showing toxicity. The problem with molybdenum toxicity in livestock however, is well known (and humans need to take care in handling the element — the dust is hazardous too). High molybdenum uptake can easily antagonise copper uptake inducing acute copper deficiency in livestock. In

most pastures therefore, it is probably safer to try to address molybdenum with bulk liming to bring the pH up to a good level say around 6.0 to 6.2. Fortunately the lime also contains some steadily released molybdenum too.

In some cases, liming is not sufficient and there can be marvellous responses in clover growth to 10 grams per hectare (one off annually for five years) of sodium molybdate being sprayed on. Note the small amount — that’s all the nitrogen fixing rhizobium bacteria need to get a boost in their activities. (Note if applying in solid fertiliser form, the recommended rate would be around 50 grams per hectare).

Yellowed clover leaves can be an indicator of molybdenum deficiency

The rst and foremost thing to realise is that the soil on your farm is the stomach of the plant. All life on the planet has some type of stomach. However, the most abundant form of life on our planet is plants and although they don’t appear to have a stomach, their roots are well entrenched in the stomach which we know as the soil. The gut of the sh contains the same micro-organisms as the gut of humans, animals and the soil. All life is intrinsically connected through these microbes — how magical is that?

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction and this is evident in the move to agro-chemical production, particularly over the past 30 years with the inherent toxicity of phosphate rock used in the production of superphosphate and its petrochemical partner, urea. The action of these two products is not only having a negative effect on our environment, but also on our food production, especially with issues over the heavy metal cadmium coming from super phosphate and the excess loading of nitrate in food, resulting from heavy applications of urea.

Super phosphate and urea are decimating the microbial mass of the

soil. These microbes are essential in achieving top quality food production. They are the farmer’s soil management team; converting mineral to a plant available form, building humus (carbon) in the soil, increasing soil water retention quality, water drainage capacity, mineral quality, topsoil depth and xing all the natural nitrogen your pasture requires, via the atmosphere, for free! That will beat any chemical fertiliser shareholder rebate to smithereens and you’ll be looking after the environment too.

A g r o - c h e m i c a l production has reached the point whereby it is now damaging New Zealand’s clean green image. Our 100% pure declaration has been blown out the door, courtesy of the chemical consultants advising farmers to use toxic products on their farm, resulting in export market questioning the value of the food we are producing. For example, the current problems and scrutiny some New Zealand dairy exporters are facing with  China. For the past 460

million years plants have been xing nitrogen directly from the atmosphere with the help from mycorrhizal fungi and rhizobium bacteria.

The addictive use of synthetic nitrogen (urea) suppresses this natural system of free nitrogen supply, in particular clovers (which can x nitrogen naturally) which

instead start resonating at a frequency that attracts the clover ea and root weevil. If however you refrain from using urea, the clover seeds in the soil will germinate and are further enhanced by the applications of Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers. Clover for cows is the ultimate food.

Farming is meant to be a natural process and the

more natural you make it the better it operates — that is how nature designed it. Farmers are tricked into chemical production with the lure of more stock, more money, only to nd themselves on the chemical treadmill and little pro t to show for it. The chemical cowboys are taking it all! We need to get back to wholesome farming, producing

wholesome food for a wholesome pro t and Agrissentials are at the coal-face bringing health and vitality back to your farm with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers.

The mind is like a parachute — it has to be open to work, so close your wallet and look into Agrissentials’ atmospheric nitrogen xing programme and save yourself some serious money and look after the environment at the same time — that’s got to be the best deal ever. Ranger moves ahead with tech innovations

The Polaris Ranger 400 may have been engineered smaller than its sibling the XP, but it still gets the toughest jobs done on the farm.

Designed to be easier to maneuver, store and park inside barns and sheds than its ‘big brother’, the 400’s impressive 10” ground clearance still keeps the ride smooth, clearing obstacles and reducing high-centering on rough terrain.

A true all wheel drive (AWD) system automatically engages all four wheels when you need more forward traction, and reverts back to 2WD when you don’t. When in 2WD, the VersaTrac Turf Mode switch unlocks the rear differential for easier, tighter turns that won’t tear up your grass — great for muddy pasture or after harrowing and tilling.

Polaris’ smooth Independent Rear Suspension system (IRS) has 9” of

travel and five-point adjustable preload so you can stiffen the suspension for heavy loads. The MacPherson Strut independent front suspension has a long 8” of travel — a strand of engineering DNA shared with rally-winning Polaris off roaders.

The Ranger 400 also aims to deliver industry leading ergonomics for a more comfortable day’s work. Driver and passenger comfort have been prioritised, with extra legroom and easy cab slide-through design so two adults

can get in and out quickly.

The Ranger’s 500 lb capacity rear dump box has gas-assist dumping operation and features the exclusive ‘Lock & Ride’ cargo system,

allowing tools and equipment to be secured or retrieved in seconds. Best of all it comes with a certified roll-over protective structure for your safety — a big issue on the modern Kiwi farm.

All in all, this scaled-down XP packs in a host of features, and loses nothing but a little horsepower in the transition. Polaris have pitched this 400cc machine at the budget-conscious farmer, and this sector of the market will likely welcome their attention to detail.

Hoof Printwith Fred HoekstraHOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

The season is well on the way now and the weather has been great so far, and because of that we certainly have not had the lameness issues we experienced at this time last year.

However, improving the hoof health of a cow is a constant goal. Even with weather like this we know that lame cows will come. A lot of the severity of the lameness depends on management style, herd size, milk production level and diet. There are a number of things you can do to minimise lameness and the cost of lameness.

Foot baths can be used but are only helpful for infectious diseases.

Fortunately we don’t have many of these diseases in New Zealand, even though it appears that Digital Dermatitis may be on the increase and we need to be on the lookout for this disease. However, apart from this and Foot Rot, we are close to being infectious disease-free here.

Foot baths should not be used for hardening the hooves as that will not minimise lameness. Another option is preventative hoof trimming. Hooves that are not functioning well are more likely to induce lameness. But what does that mean?

The principle of a well functioning hoof is that the weight is spread as evenly as possible over the medial and lateral claws. That means that the pressure on every cm² of both claws on the sole is basically the same.

This can be achieved by making the dorsal wall as short as possible (7.5cm) so that the weight goes more towards the toes. Then the claws need to be at an equal height, at least as close as possible.

This way the excess weight of the bigger claw (usually the lateral claw) is transferred to the smaller claw (usually the medial claw). By doing this the effect of laminitis will be less severe and therefore the cow will be more mobile.

Obviously preventative trimming is best done before the cows go lame. Overseas, farmers usually trim their cows’ feet twice a year. They need to because their cows spend many hours on concrete in their barns.

Because New Zealand farming is usually pasture based, our cows spend a lot more time on soft ground which means that the claw height difference has a less diverse effect because the softer ground will shape more around the hooves.

Preventative trimming being done on-farm by Veehof

Nevertheless our cows are spending a substantial amount of time on hard surfaces when they walk to and from the cow shed and stand in the holding yard, and this is when the overloading of the lateral claw is most likely to occur.

Because of this, preventative trimming also has an effective role to play (as was shown to be the case in a trial we conducted a couple of years ago) and should be included as part of our best farming practices in NZ as well.

Instead of trimming all the cows twice a year like our overseas counterpart’s do, we can get away with trimming a smaller portion of the herd. It is not necessary to trim the whole herd, just the ones with long toes and uneven claws. But in saying that, we do have a number of clients who do trim all their cows every year with very good  results. A healthy herd starts with preventative action. It adds to pride and enjoyment in your herd and your achievements.

Regulatory compliance and milk quality

Teat sprayer innovator and developer David Carey, says there are two high risk areas.

“Cows that do not nish milking in the rst revolution of the platform are sprayed with the cups on. While there is a short period for the spray to dry, the residue may still brush onto the teats of the following cow as they are cupped.”

He says the other concern is where cows have kicked off their cups before being milked out, are kept on the platform and are re-cupped after having already been teat sprayed.

“Fonterra says these sprayed cups must be washed in compliant water and sprayed teats washed and dried before being re-cupped.”

Mr Carey says free-riding cows can be accidentally re-cupped after being sprayed.

“This poses a greater risk if the free-riders are freshly calved colostrum cows and the milk harvester is inexperienced. Everybody knows that these cows have swollen udders which look as if they have not been milked out.”

He says risks from work exhaustion around calving time and the repetitious nature of the job, plus machines all contribute to the problem.

“The solution is to spray cows after they have left the platform but for farmers who have their sheds setup for platform teat spraying,

To meet Fonterra’s Risk Management Plan (RMP) to protect the future of New Zealand dairy food production, suppliers with teat-spray rotary platform sheds that spray while the cow is on the platform, must have an automated system to eliminate or minimise the risk of cows being sprayed while still being milked.

we have developed a device that interrupts the signal to the teat sprayer, causing it not to spray if the cow is on the platform. This can be retro tted to most existing automatic systems that have a cow retention apparatus.”

Mr Carey says exit-race teat spraying using a system like WETiT QD0 is best as it sprays cows that have left, and have no risk of being re-cupped, which all helps New Zealand maintain its world class dairy food production reputation.

Lending an ear to rural hearing careby Alan Wheatley

A programme is being rolled out for rural women to carry a hearing care message to young rural New Zealanders.

Programme Manager of Injury Prevention at ACC, Dr John Wallaart says while heating loss is a national concern, it is increasingly so in rural New Zealand, especially among young people.

“They listen to audio devices in already loud machinery instances and need to made aware of the potential risk, as once damaged, hearing cannot be repaired, but with some planning

and increased knowledge, it can be managed.”

The programme ‘Dangerous Decibels’ was delivered to 30,000 young people last year and Dr Wallaart wants to now see it targeting rural New Zealand.

“Hearing loss and damage is costing the industry something around $10 million a year in terms of compensation claims. It’s probably one of the top claims from the rural sector and covers all types of farming.”

A two-day course on the US-designed programme was run in Auckland last month and was well attended by rural women. Dr Wallaart says the aim is now to roll it out across the country.

“It’s a farming issue and so we want rural women to come and get the facts and then take the message about hearing care and damage

ACC Programme Manager of Injury Prevention, Dr John Wallaart hopes to get the message on rural

As is often the case, nature seems to be doing business in the best way possible.

That’s why Sun-Mar toilets are designed not only to harness these natural processes, but to optimise and accelerate them.

Toilet waste is over 90% water content. This can be evaporated and carried back to the atmosphere through the vent system. The small amount of remaining material is recycled into a useful fertilising soil.

Wherever there is a poorly working septic system, a Sun-Mar can take care of the toilet waste; where there is an outhouse we offer the luxury of an indoor facility; and where there is no toilet at all, a Sun-Mar provides the

right environmental choice. Sun-Mar units are economical, quick to install and easy to use.

Because no chemicals and no septic systems are used, fragile environments can be protected. A Sun-Mar composting unit is an environmentally healthy choice for recycling human waste.

The Sun-Mar system produces no pollutants, while collecting nutrients. With a Sun-Mar, recycling is made easy!

Odour FreeAs well as ensuring an aerobic

breakdown in the Bio-drum, Sun-Mar ensures an odour free environment by engineering the air ow within the unit to maintain a partial vacuum at all times. Air is being drawn in either by a fan (or on non-electric units by the vent chimney)

over the evaporating chamber and up the vent stack. Not only does this evaporate excess liquid, but by continuously pulling air in we ensure no smell escapes from the unit.

Evaporation is assisted on electric units by a thermostatically controlled heater in a sealed compartment underneath the evaporating chamber.

“Turning unproductive land into productive pastures”

Concerns for forestry’s futureby Colin Patterson

High log prices and record tree harvests might indicate that New Zealand’s forestry industry is in good shape.

But Waikato logging contractor Karl Schwitzer begs to differ. He says that unless the industry does something to address low pay rates for silviculturalists — those who tend and prune growing trees — and starts to think more strategically, the country will run out of trees to harvest and opportunities

will go  begging. Silviculture is tough, demanding work.

Mr Schwitzer says low pay and long hours provide little incentive for young people to think of it as a career.

The last two decades have seen a rush of investors getting into forestry.

Mr Schwitzer says many of them see forestry as a matter of planting trees, waiting until they mature, then harvesting them and collecting the returns.

However, trees have to be managed and pruned. Instead of engaging professionals, many investors either don’t get the work done or try it themselves, often with dismal results. “If you don’t go to the effort of looking after your forests, you’ll end up with rubbish trees.”

Mr Schwitzer says high world log prices are encouraging forest owners to harvest early. But felled forests are not being replaced by new planting. “Twenty-five years ago we were planting 150,000 hectares a year. Last year we did less than 10,000. By 2025 there will be no trees to chop down. The writing’s on the wall.”

Many investors are harvesting, even if their trees have not fully matured

and the quality of their product may not be high. “With lower-grade timber the extraction costs can be greater than what it fetches. We need an organisation that tells people it’s got to be done properly, or not at all.”

While forestry is important to our trading economy, we are still a small player. “In forestry around the world we are still a pinhead. We’re a bucket in a swimming pool.”

Even so, there are still opportunities for our foresters. But there is also a lack of strategic direction. An example is significant use of Pinus Radiata. “It’s a stinking pine tree, not a world class product. We’re growing it because it grows quickly, not because it’s a quality timber.”

Mr Schwitzer says forestry investors need to think long-term and seek professional advice before making significant decisions.
