Vets welcome animal welfare bill
New Zealand vets are rejoicing in the news of the passing of the Animal Welfare Amendment Bill which will mean greater transparency and enforceability of animal welfare laws, creating a stronger national reputation for animal welfare.
The New Zealand Veterinary Association was an important part in shaping the bill and they say the key changes legally recognise animal sentience which is sensation and feeling in animals for the first time in New Zealand law.
NZVA president Dr Steve Merchant says: “Veterinarians are at the vanguard of animal welfare advocacy, and public support is behind us in the call for greater clarity on issues concerning animal welfare and increased sanctions for animal cruelty.
“An ima l we l f a re expectations have been rapidly changing, and practices that were once commonplace for pets and farm stock are no longer acceptable or tolerated. The bill brings legislation in line with our nation’s changing attitude on the status of animals in society.”
He believes the inclusion of sentience shows that people are obliged to meet all aspects of their animals’ physical health and behavioural needs, and New Zealand is at the “forefront of progressive animal welfare legislation.”
The bill provides a clearer definition of surgical procedures and the policy has been retained that these procedures must be performed by veterinarians or veterinary students under qualified supervision.
“Veterinarians will play a key role in developing regulations around these procedures which will be enforceable by law.
“The Codes will now provide a clearer benchmark for compliance, rather than just being guidelines.”
Dr Merchant says mandatory standards for the export of live animals are also strongly supported and was a central issue in the NZVA’s submission
The New Zealand Veterinary Association president Dr Steve Merchant
on the bill. Standards now take into account the treatment and environment the animals are in at their destination.
“There will be more certainty for exporters and overseas markets about animal welfare requirements. Veterinarians will also have a more substantial role in the assessment and monitoring of the export process, accompanying exported animals to ensure their welfare is being met.”
Vets will continue to work with the Ministry for Primary Industries and other organisations to develop regulations and strengthen animal welfare legislation.
“Regulations will need to be very precise and clearly defined to ensure high compliance with animal welfare standards as defined by the Animal Welfare Act. This will ultimately benefit animals as well as New Zealand’s economy and international reputation.”
The bill is the result of the first major review of New Zealand’s Animal Welfare Act 1999 in 15 years, which defines animal welfare standards.

Visitors will have the latest technology at their fingertips. Downloadable for free on Android, and iOS, the Fieldays® App is available in English, Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.
Fieldays® marketing manager Rebecca Wylie says visitors “as well as being able to create their own schedule to visit their favourite suppliers or view their favourite events, will be able to receive notifications, pin to the map where their car is parked, find their friends and check the weather.”
“It really is a fantastic piece of technology and we’re proud to be able to roll out something so user-friendly and innovative to our customers.”
Two Australian and six Kiwi bachelors will put their skills, attitude and all-round
charisma to the test in the ultimate battle to find fame, fortune and love in this year’s Rural Bachelor of the Year contest — just one of the events which are set to spice up the big rural festival. For a more gritty agricultural challenge, patrons will be able to check out the talent in the Fieldays® National Fencing Contest.
At the same time, diffs and gearboxes will be put to the test in the hotly contested tractor pull competition, as drivers take to the field against the ‘sled’. In the world of creativity, the annual No. 8 Wire National Art Awards are set to reward lateral thinking. Making a masterpiece from our most famous rural material is just one option for those taking part in the Fieldays® Ag Art Wear contest, in which wearable art lets the runway meet the cattle race.

Kerry Simpson and his wife Silvia provide a rural cuisine experience for groups of
people from all over the world whilst demonstrating Kiwi hospitality and allowing visitors to see how a rural New Zealand family lives.
The couple were both drawn to the quiet country life despite their vastly different upbringings. Silvia was born in Berlin emigrating with her parents in 1961.
Kerry, on the other hand, is a third generation farmer and is working his grandfather’s land which was purchased in 1904.
After many years overseas working in the tourism industry, Kerry gave into the call of home and settled on the family farm in Matamata, naming the property Longlands after the long and narrow block of dairy land.
“It was a great opportunity,” he said of taking on the farm. In 1980, Longlands welcomed groups of tourists through their doors describing the rush they got from entertaining as exhausting but thrilling.
At the same time they were raising two children, Ingrid and James, now in their late thirties. The idea of offering a rural farm experience was borne

when the couple decided to treat some tourists to cheese and milk at their cow shed as a demonstration of a working dairy farm and it’s products.
Kerry aims to provide a specialised service to the New Zealand tourism industry and offers a sneak peek into the workings of a dairy farm.
Guests get the chance to learn what sets New Zealand farmers apart from the rest. This combination of a working farm and country-style restaurant gives visitors the full dining experience from field to plate.
Kerry and Sylvia pioneered rural tourism industry. “When we started we were the only ones doing this type of thing. We mostly entertained Australian and American tourists to begin with but now it has grown to being quite multi-national.
“We target the upper portion of the group market, so the majority of our clientele are still from Australia, United States, Europe and South America and with a few from other areas of the world.
“We get a real buzz out of holding successful events and seeing satisfied customers. We have them do a customer survey after every tour and we get pretty positive feedback.
“People are impressed with the size of our dairy industry in New Zealand,” says Kerry.
“They are also impressed with how we turn pasture grass into milk. A lot of the European tourists are used to seeing cows in barns due to the colder climates, so seeing them in fields is something a bit different.”
Longlands farm has 240 Friesian-Jersey cross cows grazing over 75 hectares. These cows are milked through a 24 herringbone cowshed by one farm manager.
“I enjoy the challenge of making more milk,” says Kerry.
“I believe we are feeding the cows better. With a bit of consistency we are seeing good results.” In total the farm produces 1.3 million litres of milk which is then manufactured and
exported through Fonterra. Motivated by the feedback and praise from their guests, the Longlands team run their farm and restaurant with a passion for entertaining and say they can’t imagine doing anything else.
Thirty years of experience behind them makes their farm highly sought after by foreign and local clientele.
“Although it is hard work, I have no regrets,” says Kerry. “We have worked really hard to get where we are.”

This means being as self-sufficient as they can in food production by nurturing and building their soils

The couple bought the block in the lovely Poukawa Valley about 15 minutes south of Hastings in Hawke’s Bay and named it Kahikatea Farm after the trees
that once grew there, and set about actually living their dream.
In the 10 years since they have had two daughters, Anna 6, and Eliza 4. They have also had to contend with a serious back injury to Aaron that has left him with a painful disability.

a composting toilet held them up. But at least they are not living in a caravan and small shed with a drum for a toilet.
It was the deluxe model in that it had a proper seat but still a drum. They lived in the caravan and small attached shed for five years till their daughter Anna was nine months old and it was no longer practical.
“Living in a caravan with a crawling baby was a nightmare,” says Jo. The couple met on a bus tour through Africa when English-born Jo and Hastings-born Aaron were on their Big OE.
After a stint living and working in Australia where Jo came across permaculture, they returned to New Zealand to buy Kahikatea Farm.
Everything on their farm has a role and purpose. It might be planting tagasaste trees for shade and nitrogen fixing or companion planting aromatic herbs and flowers to keep the bugs away from the vegetables. The herbs and other plants could have a medicinal purpose or be used to create dyes.
They have planted hundreds of trees, many of them native species, and the

bird life has exploded.“It’s remarkable how the birds have returned,” they say.
Nothing goes to waste. One of the first projects when they moved in was to build swales to catch the rainfall. The swales contain any downhill runoff so it can be better used by the trees and shrubs alongside them.
Nothing goes to waste from the house or gardens either. Any crop ‘failures’ and scraps are fed to the hens which keep them in eggs and meat from surplus young roosters.
Since Aaron was injured Jo has been a whirlwind of activity. Aaron keeps the home fires burning — literally because their wood-fired stove is their only cooking method — takes care of their daughters and manages their finances. The stove is fuelled by coppiced gum trees grown on the property and there is an outdoor barbecue for when it’s just too hot to cook indoors. The stove also heats all the hot water they need.
There are no screens in the Duff house apart from the laptop for taking nursery orders. There is no television, microwave oven or landline telephone. But the couple’s two daughters are in no way deprived.
They are fully in tune with their lifestyle and have a playhouse and their own garden built for them by the Wwoofers who arrive regularly.
Jo jokes that if they don’t like what’s for dinner they will get their own vegetables or salad ingredients. They can name many of the plants and trees on the property.
Jo and Aaron’s plans include planting more trees and enlarging
their nursery operation to meet an increasing demand.
The west-facing front of the property is under-used and they have plans to turn some of it into grazing for cattle to keep it tidy and provide another income stream.
The rest will be planted into another food forest based on what they have learned from the first one.
Jo has established a thriving nursery business at the farm. She and two part-time contract workers grow a huge range of certified organic plants suitable for gardens or food forests such as the one they are still creating.
Their seedlings are available through their website www.kahikateafarm.co.nz.

Meryl was a member of the local weavers, spinners and dyers guild, and took the
opportunity to attend Woolfest — an event celebrating wool and related crafts in the Lake District.
A large range of coloured fleece were available for sale at Woolfest, including those from rare breeds. The animals that produced the fleece were also showcased.
“I had a dream that I would like to own a small flock of coloured sheep,” said Meryl.
When she returned to live in New Zealand, Meryl was able to make that dream a reality.
“Through the Hamilton Creative Group, I made contact with someone who had coloured Corriedale-type sheep and went from there.”
Finding a good ram and keeping her flock in excellent health have been key factors to building up Meryl’s flock.
She also gives credit to good advice from the Waikato branch president of the Black and Coloured Sheep Association of New Zealand, George Caddie.
Formed in 1976, the BSCBA has 12 branches throughout New Zealand with members ranging from those who own just a few sheep through to large commercial flocks. Meryl has been a member of the local Waikato branch

To avoid her flock size becoming too large for her small lifestyle block, she breeds from some of her ewes once every two years. Her flock is made up of an assortment of pale cream to dark chocolate browns, red-browns, greys, and black. Meryl would like to breed more grey and cream-coloured fleece into her flock.
“I’d also like to explore the possibility of getting hold of a few rare breed sheep, although don’t know what yet.”
Meryl likes the overall look of her coloured sheep, the textured depth
crimp of the wool, and the shading of the fleece.
She said all her sheep look individual with their own personalities.
“Because the flock is small, my sheep are reasonably tame and are every easy to handle,” she said.
Her sheep are usually shorn in October when a shearer visits Meryl’s property and other small holdings in the district.
She spins a small amount of the fleece her flock produce, and also sells some to local spinners and craftspeople.
“I have managed to sell quite a bit of my wool at the Cambridge Creative Fibre exhibition held in June at Leamington on Trades Day. Word gets round that I have
good coloured fleece for sale and I sell to individual people who get in touch.”
Seeing the lambs born, the surprise of wool colours that appear, and knowing the wool yarn spun has been produced from her place are particular highlights for Meryl.
“That holistic feeling,” she said.Meryl is a member of the Hakarimata
Spinners and Weavers Group which meet twice a month in Taupiri.
“They run local spin-ins, dyeing days, and work in with other creative fibre groups in the Waikato such as Hamilton, Cambridge and Thames,” said Meryl.
“I don’t get to all the meetings, but it’s a sound little creative fibre group and has amazingly skilled members.”

Calf feeding made easyCalf rearing is often considered a dreary job done out of necessity instead of a nancial investment for the future. Wilco Engineering believes it should be given the importance it deserves.
The company manufactures a range of Hay Feeders with optional removable Meal Bins. The bene t of having hay and/or meal available as early as possible in a young calf’s life is well documented, so Wilco make hanging feeders for the shed or paddock.
Once the animals are moving around the farm it is often dif cult to continue to provide for them in a user friendly, convenient food source so Wilco have two and three-wheeled mobile hay racks — or optional meal bins — sized from one bale to ve bale capacity. All come with rear tow hitches so the milk feeder can be easily towed behind the hay feeder if required.
Whether it is catering for the lifestyle block, alpacas, sheep, horses, or a dairy unit, Wilco have a size that will make life easier and feed stock well.
‘It can be an enjoyable task if the right food is available for the animals and the right equipment used for this important job. There is nothing more depressing than seeing your supplement going to waste,’ the company says.
‘Don’t feed supplement for your stock to sleep on — come and visit us at NZ National Agricultural Fieldays® SITE F4 to see how we can help you save time, minimise wastage with a fully galvanised product that will last for years’.

Solutions found in product rangeFounded in 1980 as Plant Plasma Industries, with an initial product of simple sh liquid based fertiliser, Plasma Biotec Solutions has experienced steady growth from its small beginnings to being the robust company it is today offering a range of diverse products across the many facets of agriculture and horticulture.
While farmers were achieving good results from use of Plasma Biotec Solutions early fertiliser, the company soon experienced a growing number of requests for additional levels of various minerals and trace elements.
This led to customer driven product development that resulted in the current range of high analysis, balanced, and highly ef cient products that the company now have available.
Plasma Biotec Solutions range of fertiliser products now covers both pastoral and horticultural farming and includes a growing number of product blends to suit individual needs.
These can be partnered with a highly concentrated soil conditioner that was also added to the range.
More recently, and coinciding with the change of company name to Plasma Biotec Solutions, was the addition of the Megimmune® range of animal mineral supplement drenches to their catalogue of products, available in four different formulations to suit all types of livestock farming.
With an increasing focus in the marketplace on product safety and traceability Plasma Biotec Solutions has a Registered Risk Management Programme (RMP) in place with MPI (Food Safety).
This requires the company to be regularly audited by MPI for traceability of inputs, product quality and consistent
manufacturing standards — making them unique in the industry and the team is very proud of this aspect. Plasma Biotec Solutions will again be attending the NZ National Agricultural Fieldays® at Mystery Creek®, and although in their usual location, the site number has changed to site E76.

Sustainable ef uent management
A D V E RT O R I A L
Presco Group is a leading supplier of farm dairy ef uent management infrastructure and the sole New Zealand manufacturer and installer of Prosump ef uent sumps.
The company maintains that sustainable thinking on dairy farms is bene cial to everyone involved. It ensures the farmer is constantly driving towards his or her long-term purpose, looking after their most important asset, their people, as well as protecting the planet and maximising and safeguarding pro t streams — even in hard times.
“Nowhere in dairy farming is the need for sustainable thinking more pertinent currently than in setting up a farm dairy ef uent management system,” says Oliver Prestidge of Presco Group’s Environmental Infrastructure division.
“With such high stakes: non-compliance issues; the substantiality of the investment; the potential cost of something major going wrong such as a liner tearing or a tank leaking or bursting, and the nancial returns that can potentially be realised from this naturally-derived, nutrient-rich waste, the decision must be weighed up carefully. However short-term, cost driven thinking can lead to decisions being made today that will have serious environmental and nancial consequences tomorrow.”
He said he is noticing a larger number of farmers this year who want to ‘do it once and do it right’ when it comes to dairy ef uent management.
“This is an encouraging trend as we have heard so many horror stories from farmers that have ended up in the proverbial brown stuff over issues with their ef uent ponds.
“The big increase in the number of Presco Group’s heavy duty concrete Prosumps being installed this season can be put down to one thing — peace of mind.
“With a concrete Prosump, a farmer can put one in the ground and forget about it. It can’t rust, it can’t rip or tear and it can’t leak.
“Because of its durability, the decision to install a Prosump is a non-brainer for forward thinking farmers. After researching all the options, they often tell us that there is nothing else that compares with the Prosump’s high strength and reinforced concrete construction. We often get the comment, ‘you can’t compare 150 millimetres of concrete with just a few millimetres of plastic’. ”
“When the farmer looks at the bullet proof design of a Prosump and our specialist construction methods, it gives them the con dence that it is built to last a lifetime. Although the Prosump comes with a 50-year minimum build-life guarantee, we prefer to let the reputation of concrete durability speak for itself. We point clients to the iconic Hawera Water Tower which can be seen from our premises.
“This towering landmark was made from vastly inferior concrete to the concrete technology we use today, yet it just had its 100th birthday.
“Any dairy farmer that is interested in sustainable farming and is serious about getting their ef uent storage right the rst time, should give me a call. You can be sure that we will both be speaking the same language.”
Visit Presco at the NZ National Agricultural Fieldays®, Site: PB14. To discuss sustainable FDE management options NZ wide, call Presco Group on 0800 PRESCO (0800 77 37 26) or email [email protected].

Drought – World Wide Problemby John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
I’m writing this article from Fresno, California, where we have just landed our rst container load of Rok Solid full spectrum fertiliser.
Our USA project Manager is Rick Broderson, a born & bred Californian who has lived in New Zealand for the past 30 years managing his own business. Rick has a real passion for what Agrissentials are doing for farmers and their soils. Fresno is in the “food bowl” area of California producing meat, milk, fruit, vegetables, nuts, grapes and many other crops, but one other thing they have in common with New Zealand is the lack of rain when you need it.
Just north of Fresno is the San Luis Reservoir, a huge manmade lake which provides irrigation to many farmers, but through lack of rain this winter, the lake is short of the water needed to irrigate the new season crops, so everybody here is praying for rain; their livelihoods depend upon it.
Rick & I are talking to many farmers and they all admit that over the past few years their soils have struggled to hold water, with reservoir water
coming onto their properties, not holding, but running straight off to be pumped back into the San Luis Dam — all at a cost.
Agrissentials see a huge opportunity here in California, by bringing water retention quality back to the soil with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers. The answer lies between the micro organisms and a full array of natural minerals. The micro organisms are the rst creatures to dine at the mineral table converting the minerals to a plant available form. When they do this, they wrap the minerals in humus, so that the minerals don’t leach from the soil. The humus produced has water retention capacity, holding both mineral and water to be passed onto the plant as required. This is the natural system and it carries the potential to regenerate top soil, increasing the carbon content or cc rating of the soil. Agrissentials recognises soil as the engine room of the farm, the more carbon
produced, the higher the cc rating of the engine room (or soil). The continued use of synthetic minerals and their high solubility is burning out the carbon content of the soil and destroying the microbial life. This results in erosion of soils (Re: Dr Morgan Williams report New Zealand Government in 2004 stating that top soils were eroding at between 300–400 million tonnes per year) — straight down the rivers and into the sea.
Agrissentials can remedy this situation with their multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers. These two ingredients work together to restore and regenerate soils, increasing mineral and water retention, soil carbon content, drainage capacity and top soil depth, which all contribute to the cc rating of the farm’s engine room.
Soil, food and water are what farming is all about and it all begins in the soil. Agrissentials are offering farmers the opportunity to start a new relationship with their farm and that relationship begins in the soil. So with rules, regulations, licensing and compliance coming into farming Agrissentials offer you, the farmer, the opportunity to make a change for good, working with Mother Nature for a better, more prosperous farm and a strong future. Make a call today to Agrissentials and join the move towards better healthier, production and a bio diverse environment.

Built for the jobThe Giant wheel loader is manufactured in Holland by Tabroco machines, and marketed and distributed by Forestquip in Christchurch, which has a number of dealerships around New Zealand offering sales and back-up.
The machines use only quality components such as the proven Kubota engine which is mounted in the rear of the machine, offering perfect working balance, along with fuel economy and reliability. The engine is coupled up to Bosch hydraulic pumps.
While the hydraulic system is powering the whole machine, the pump is putting out an impressive 135L/min to the hydraulic drive system and a further 65L/min for the lift, crowd, and auxiliary system. There is plenty of oil to meet demand. A hydraulic oil reservoir is cleverly built into the chassis at the back of the machine. The standard Giant hitch on the front of the machine comes with third-and fourth-service auxiliary hydraulics and also hydraulic locking pins on the hitch.
The drive system is fully hydrostatic and uses heavy-duty planetary end drive axles in the front and rear in full-time 4WD. An electronic hydraulic differential lock is operated with a push button on the joystick and locks both the front and rear axles. Other features include third function buttons and forward/reverse toggle tted to the joystick of the machine, making it a very easy to operate and excellent for loading and precision work.
The lifting boom is built out of two heavy-duty steel arms, with the crowd movement of the bucket taken care of with a double ‘Z’ linkage. This creates a perfect parallel movement, keeping the bucket level when lifting and creating a greater breakout force when digging with minimal obstruction of the operator’s view. Both loaders use heavy duty greasable pins in the boom and feature a Giant headstock on the front as standard, but they can be equipped
with virtually any hitch available, even a Euro hitch.
Because of the versatility and the range of Giant compact wheel loaders, these machines are now found in many parts of New Zealand working a variety of applications such as farming, landscaping, civil, waste management, and construction. By simply adding a range of forks, buckets, and mowers, it can be easily adapted to suit most working environments.

Standing up for men’s health
An enormous walk-through colon isn’t something you see every day.
The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is hoping its 6.5 metre ‘colossal colon’ will get men talking about their health at Fieldays® this June.
“Statistics show that men are more likely to get cancer and die from it than women,” said Cancer Society spokesperson Maria Low.
“Fieldays® is a great opportunity for us to talk about men’s health, in particular bowel health, and to educate men on how to reduce their cancer risk.”
Visitors to the Cancer Society’s site at Mystery Creek® will be able to step
into the giant in atable colon, to see rst-hand the damage caused by poor bowel health.
“In previous years we have found that the colon has been a real eye opener for visitors,” said Ms Low.
“We hope our site helps people, in particular men, to become more aware of their health, to learn what to look for and to know when a visit to the doctor is a must.”
You can nd the Cancer Society at the Fieldays® in the Rural Living Marquee, site LS15–17.

On the moveIt’s that time of year again when dairy farmers around the country prepare for what is known as Gypsy Week. Farms will change hands and sharemilkers will pack up their belongings and move on to their new farms.
June 1 marks the end of the 2014–15 season and the beginning of the 2015–16 season.
In rural dairying areas, roads will be busy with stock trucks and stock if farmers are shifting them to neighbouring properties.
When moving stock on the roads, farmers must hold the correct permits from local councils.
Farmers should ensure there are plenty of staff on hand to help out, wearing appropriate safety equipment such as high visibility vests and helmets if quads and bikes are used.
As a motorist, be patient around stock on the roads as tooting will excite the animals and this will prolong the exercise. It is important drivers follow farmers’ instructions to ensure personal safety and the wellbeing of the stock.
Planning in detail is an important part of Gypsy Week and effluent on the roads can be minimised by some simple preparation, and effluent tanks must be empty before a long journey. Make sure cows are fit and healthy before Gypsy Week and able to stand evenly on four legs. They must also have a body condition score of at least 3.0.
Precondition stock, especially if they will be travelling a long way. Take cows off green feed for no less than four hours and leave up to 12 hours to process the feed. Feeding cows on straw, hay and baleage with access
to water also helps. Booking stock transport in advance and estimating an arrival time for when the truck will pick up the animals means the cows have time to stand off for the recommended minimum time, decreasing the amount of effluent produced.
This enables the stock to ‘stand’ for the recommended time.
Check with the transport operator regarding their journey plan including effluent disposal and rest stops. Communicate with the farmer at the destination about when the cattle will be arriving. When the cows arrive at the new farm allow them to be fed and watered as well as inspect them regularly on the first day to ensure no illnesses or injuries have occurred after the journey.
Following these simple guidelines will ensure Gypsy Week goes smoothly and both animals and farmers get to their new location quickly and safely.

Para Rubber Hamilton have a range of industrial and domestic mats that cater to both farming and camping needs.
They offer easily transportable bedding solutions, useful when on the move during Gypsy Week.
Mattresses ranging from single to queen are available and will ensure a good night’s rest over the busiest week of the agricultural calendar.
Rubber mats for the back of the ute are also available to stop gear sliding around when on the move. Their cargo matting range provides extra grip for those windy country roads.
Rubber stud matting, also called coin matting, provides grip and prevents slipping. This is a very durable commercial grade rubber designed to

Their range of safety mats are ideal for slippery surfaces and are slip resistant in wet, frosty and cold conditions. These are useful on ramps anywhere where grip and durability is needed.
Rubber insertion sheeting is also a must for this time of year and is made from strong durable rubber ideal for gaskets, use in stables, horse oats, drop sheets, mud aps and trucks.

Drilling down for better resultsby Andy Bryenton
The roots of better growing begin below the ground, with well aerated soil and the right seed, accompanied by the right fertiliser for maximum performance.
In earlier times, seed was broadcast over the top of freshly turned earth — the origin of our term for ‘broadcasting’ television and radio media. But today farmers often opt for the precision of undersowing — the placement of seed at just the right depth to ensure a healthy start to the season. Maschio Gaspardo are an Italian agricultural machinery company who produce some of the most advanced seed drills in the world. They have taken a technology first developed using bamboo reeds attached to plough in ancient China and developed it into a truly 21st century science, offering a range of powerful machines which pneumatically place seed beneath the surface. From their early origins in the 1960s, Maschio Gaspardo have grown to become a dominant force in world agriculture, and their Pronta and Gigante ‘no till’ seed drills demonstrate why they are trusted by farmers the world over.
Both machines are designed to be operated from modern tractors, with the option of Gaspardo’s GENIUS electric drive system putting all the controls at the operator’s fingertips in the cab. Calibration, once a time-consuming exercise with wheel-actuated machines,
is cut back to mere minutes. The smaller Pronta still sows a wide swathe, while the appropriately named Gigante come equipped with a hydraulically opening and closing frame, expanding from three metres to more than double this size when in the field. Both machines use a pneumatic principle to fire seed to exactly the right depth and spacing to ensure a scientifically precise start for all manner of crops. With the ability to add hoppers for fert and slug bait, the Maschio Gaspardo range are
versatile, too. From turnips and chicory through to cereal crops and pasture, simple adjustments ensure the correct placement for top results.
Kiwi farmers and contractors — who expect a durable machine to tackle long hours in the field — have also praised the build quality of these implements, relying on them in both Spring and Autumn for the demanding pasture prep season.

New hope for long term back pain sufferersAfter nearly eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain.
Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare.
Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it.
“To me surgery was never an option,” he said, “as long as I still could walk, there was hope.”
Dave tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help.
While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The rst time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that,” he said.
Dave never believed it would x him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief.”
To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Dave said. “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available
and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.”
It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.
Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.
“We have testimonials from people with over fty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children,” said Dave.
“The blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent.”
What this means for the aging population is that it maintains the health of the brain as we all get older.
INZ now have a division putting them into industry as back pain costs companies a considerable amount of lost production.
Both Dave and Nancy will be attending the show. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering.
84 year old Frank Harwood of Turangi having a ‘stretch’. Frank
has been using his Teeter for seven years
“I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves.
“Most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less,” he said. “We let the tables do the talking.”
Come along to one of our shows for a treatment, if you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
SEPTIC TANK OWNERS
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.
A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.
There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.
Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening

your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.
What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through
to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.
A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

A leading water treatmentAll rural water sources are different so nding the right water treatment solution can be dif cult and end up a costly exercise if not done correctly.
With more than twenty years’ experience in the treatment of rural water, Ecoworld has developed a full scale trial system on the back of a trailer to help demonstrate their ‘iRon ltration’ system designed for the removal of iron and manganese.
The pilot system allows the company to give potential customers the option to ‘try before they buy’ and test the iRon technology in on their own water source. This has helped Ecoworld to plan the correct treatment solutions for their customers.
Since the introduction of the pilot system over 18 months ago demand has continued to grow. It is being booked continuously sometimes months in advance. Dave Muggeridge of Morrinsville took the opportunity to try the pilot system before investing in an iRon ltration system.
“The option to run a full-scale iron and manganese ltration system on our bore water has been nothing less than brilliant”, he said. “The two-to-three week trial period enabled us to see and use the water it produces over our entire farming operation.”
Recently the pilot system has undergone an upgrade which includes the fully automatic system now being housed in a self-contained crate with its

Agrimin launch new ‘waterproof’ copper bolus range for cattle
A D V E RT O R I A L
Bolus specialists Agrimin, have announced the launch of a new range of copper boluses for cattle, sold in New Zealand under the 24.7 brand.
Agrimin 24.7 Copper boluses have the advantage over capsules as they can be handled in rain without disintegrating.
The boluses quickly breakdown in the rumen and release copper oxide needles which lodge in the ruminal folds and are then absorbed and stored in the liver.
Copper de ciency is common in young cattle on pasture in New Zealand and is most often encountered in the winter when copper availability is low.
Trials on the new Agrimin 24.7 boluses were conducted in cattle on a property with a history of copper de ciency in Northland. They were dosed and then grazed on reclaimed marsh that contained high levels of iron in the forage.
The liver copper levels of the group were maintained at normal levels for at least 168 days. Towards the end of the trial, the blood copper levels of 70 per cent of the control group, which received no copper supplementation, were below normal. This indicated that the liver copper reserves were exhausted.
The untreated controls were then given a copper bolus in the spring to correct the de ciency. Within 28 days, blood copper levels were normal in all 10
animals. This shows the Agrimin copper boluses are effective in the treatment and
prevention of copper de ciency in cattle. The new product range is available from your local veterinary clinic.

The ULTIMATE fencing tool
Using Batten King takes less than one minute per batten or just a few seconds using a staple gun. It is a one man operation saving time and halving labour.
The batten is held in place by one wire allowing staples to be applied to the other wires in a nice even manner.
It works as a dolly whilst stapling providing a firm, stable surface to hit against while hammering or using a staple gun.
Batten King is a safer way to fence because it eliminates the need to physically hold the batten in place while stapling. This eliminates the risk of injury via jarring or accidentally hitting hands with a hammer.

Going solo on fencingWhen designer David Neal suffered ill health, his partner was left to do the fencing. Watching her struggle to hold the batten and staple the wire at the same time gave him an idea to help make her job easier.
He drew up some designs and sent them to his father, Brian Neal, a toolmaker, who made a prototype of his invention which holds a batten in place to be secured to a fence. They called it ‘Batten King’.
“It now takes less than one minute per batten to be attached to the fence and it is a one man operation,” says Mr Neal.
“The tool works as a platform providing a rm, stable surface to hit against while hammering or using a staple gun and it is an easier way to fence because it eliminates the need to physically hold the wood in place.”
“It is attached by hooks to one fence wire, allowing the staples to be applied to the other wires in a nice even manner. The tool helps lessen the risk of injury through jarring or accidentally hitting hands or legs with a hammer, and it allows one person to do the job of two, reducing labour and time for the fencer.”
“Batten King is new to the market and is a must for every fencer because it enables people to do their own fencing quickly and cuts down costs,” he says.

Tangle free fence standardsThe frustration of untangling electric fence standards has been solved by Geoff Pearson and his invention the PIGGYSTAK™, launched in 2007.
“This invention sorts out the age old problem of handling and storing standards and reels. The name was inspired by the term Pigtails or Piggy-sticks, a name many farmers call their fence standards,” says Geoff.
The PIGGYSTAK™ stores up to 20 standards of any type. Farmers can also carry one in each hand with a reel to manage up to 40 standards at a time or
simply have them hanging off the quad bike or ute to break feed with ease.
With re ective strips to help nd it in the dark, it is made of high grade aluminium which means it will not rust, is lightweight, strong, easy and comfortable to handle.
It can be used as a handling device and a convenient tidy way to keep fence standards up off the ground, untangled,
and always ready to go. Farmers are able to run out their tape and put fence standards in the ground in one operation, saving time and effort.
Keeping standards stored off the ground also means that they are easily found without the extra expenses and losses for contractors’ broken machinery when they are mowed or bailed up after being lost in the grass.
It won’t rust, so it can be left hanging on a gate or fence for the season, and it can be suspended on the shed wall with fence standards when not in use, making storage no longer an issue.
Farmers are able to have stress-free break feeding, as the PIGGYSTAK™ allows tangle free electric fence standard use, with easy transporting to and from the paddocks.
Geoff has been using the invention and fence standards with his ROCKUP Adventure business and property for several years and decided to launch the
product after getting so many positive comments and interest. He has received great feedback from farmers at eld days to the point of having to make up additional stock on-site each year to cater to the demand.

We will be demonstrating our product at the Fieldays® at site C115.

Purifying household water A D V E RT O R I A L B U S I N E S S P R O F I L E
The team at Pump and Purify supply triple water lter and ultraviolet sterilisation systems for dairy sheds to meet compliance standards or to provide safe drinking water for large households for just $1,125 including GST and delivery.
Many farming and lifestyle families buy their drinking water. A cost analysis based on four people in the home, with a very low consumption of one litre per person per day, at around $5.50 for a six-litre canister of water, will cost more than $1,400 per annum.
Other than obvious nancial savings, and the reduced environmental impact created by the plastic cannister waste, whole house ltration ensures a mouthful of water taken from any tap or in the shower is safe.
Fine dust contaminants will not affect expensive appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines. “Our customers often comment how
much better the water tastes,
and that visually the water looked ok before, but they are often stunned
at how dirty the lters are.”Hot summers mean low tank water
and nasty contaminants get stirred up from the bottom. At Pump and Purify, independent water testing can be arranged through Hill Laboratories, and a product recommendation made.
Consider also the next hot summer’s water requirements and organise a new borehole supply. The team can also supply quality bore pumps from as little as $599, supplement your rainwater and create a garden paradise, supply troughs, and top up the tank.
Earthmoving with AceThe ROBUR range of excavator attachments has been designed with the rugged New Zealand conditions in mind.
“Tilt buckets, clamp buckets, long reach arms and rippers, will be available at the eld days. Extensively eld tested, the Robur Range has already made a great impression with clients,” said Ace Equipment company director, Clem Simpkin.
“I realised there was a need in the market for heavy machinery attachments. We restructured the business to include well priced and strongly made products, with the earthmoving contractor in mind.
Construction machinery hire and sales are another division of the company which caters for heavy machinery and earthmoving equipment, including bulldozers, diggers and rollers.
Ace Equipment are showcasing their ROBUR attachments for the second year at Mystery Creek® this June.
“After the interest and sales we received last year it’s certainly worth our while being there again. This year we will have a small digger on site where you can try a Robur Clamp bucket yourself, or come and watch the experts show off their skill.
“We will have eld days’ specials and our company carries all product in stock so purchases can be delivered quickly.
“Our rates are very competitive and we are happy to tailor a deal to suit your needs.”
We will be at site A73 at the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays®.

We Can Deliver
Megaponds not requiredA D V E RT O R I A L
The Clean Green Ef uent System removes the need to construct megaponds or massive storage tanks.
The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall farm dairy ef uent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year of liquid to be dispersed. Rainwater contribution can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairy shed.
The compact yet highly ef cient Clean Green Ef uent system is now recognised world-wide. This dairy ef uent system automatically disperses ef uent with virtually no environmental impact through it’s super low application rate.
The system starts by ltering out the solids through the Clean Green Ef uent Company’s patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash then recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total freshwater consumption to about 20lt/cow/day, a marked reduction from the national average of 50 to 70lt’s/cow/day.
This reduces the amount of ef uent to be dispersed to land to 20lt/cow/day.
The Clean Green Ef uent System has a unique distribution system that was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25mm or ¼ mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or runoff. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems. The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at eld capacity.
As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy ef uent virtually all year round, the minimal storage requirements are met by enclosed water tanks, eliminating the need for megaponds.
This cost effective, patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain
For any queries on the Clean Green System, or any dairy consent requirements from full conversions to renewals, please call Lindsay and his team on 0800 400 365, or visit site H4 at the NZ National Agricultural Fieldays® at Mystery Creek®.

New Zealand farm opened in ColombiaDairy Solutionz Ltd’s 117 hectare, 300-cow demonstration dairy farm has been opened by Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos in the Narino region of South Colombia.
Dairy Solutionz chief executive Derek Fairweather, explains, “Our organisation has been working in Colombia since 2012 and has actively been developing the demonstration dairy farm for the past 18 months.”
The project will benefit Colombian farmers as 400,000 families rely on the dairy industry to live on. European free trade deals threaten the local dairy sector by making it harder for them to compete with imported products once the current 33 per cent tariffs are lifted over the next 10 years.
“This will ensure there are major downstream benefits in terms of reducing poverty in the region and improving the local population’s health and welfare status. For the farmers we are working with in Colombia, dairying is how they support their families,” he said.
“Their livelihood is under threat by globalisation and free trade. Working with the Government of Colombia, this demonstration farm is a tangible message of hope and sets a clear pathway as to how they can be competitive. By transferring Kiwi technology into their local dairy economy, we are literally providing an economic lifeline to one of the most important yet impoverished dairy regions.
“Having President Santos officially open our farm is a huge honour. It’s a great endorsement for the Kiwis and Colombians working on the farm and others back here in New Zealand who have played a part in the establishment of this unique project.”
The farm is 2,800 metres above sea level and the weather is similar to the Waikato where ryegrass and clover do well. It is the first demonstration farm in the tropics that uses New Zealand technology.
It is managed by Dairy Solutionz Kiwi farm manager Paul Gibson, and is New Zealand in design. Corpoica chief executive Juan Lucas Restrepo attended the opening and said he believed the farm is a step in the right direction.
From left to right: President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos, CEO of Corpoica Juan Lucas Restrepo, Researcher for Corpoica Edwin Castro, Farm Conversion Manager for
Dairy Solutionz (NZ) Ltd Paul Gibson and Farm Engineer for Dairy Solutionz (NZ) Ltd Nelson Medina
“We recognise New Zealand leadership in dairy technologies, breeding, pasture species and pasture management systems, and we need to prove that here in Narino.”
Mr Fairweather says the Narino demonstration farm and similar farms provide a partial solution to the issue of global food security.
“Securing enough food to nourish growing populations around the world is one of the top priorities for many governments, and we believe one of the answers to the food security issue is harnessing the untapped benefits of the world’s tropical environments.
“It just so happens that New Zealand cows and pasture thrive in the high tropics. We’re using Kiwi ingenuity to take tropical land and create rich food bowls which will benefit largely poor rural economies,” he says.
“At Dairy Solutionz we see our role as adapting New Zealand’s dairying expertise on a global scale, and to help Colombia and other similar nations to be competitive in a fast-changing, competitive international food market.”

Ask questions and avoid dairy refrigeration delays
Dairy companies are beginning to look at how they will move their suppliers towards taking the steps necessary to comply with pending NZCP1 milk cooling changes.
Currently new sheds, significant upgrades and regular non-compliers will be required to meet the new proposed milk cooling standards by June 2016.
All other farmers have a grace period until January 2018.
It’s expected many farmers will delay manag ing da i r y refrigeration issues until the latest possible time. The result will be bottlenecks around the manufacture, delivery and service. The industry is predicting demand peaking during the off-seasons over the next three years.
Whether or not your pre-cooling and refrigeration has been factored into the current season’s farm budget, a lot can be done now to prepare and avoid unnecessary costs or getting caught up in delays of equipment, installation or service.
Start with asking a few questions around the technology available and the refrigeration companies in the marketplace.
Check out the technology on offer. Where is this technology coming from? If the technology is not manufactured in New Zealand, then are parts stored locally rather than at an overseas location? Is this technology a ‘one-off’?
Can and do other companies support it? Check out the refrigeration
companies. Meeting the temperature standards will not always mean buying more refrigeration and different farms and sites. When finding the best solution for any farm a number of factors come into play: site constraints, herd size, flow rate, water source, power reliability and variable costs. Different farms will require different solutions so are you dealing with a company that can give reliable advice? Breakdowns don’t always happen during weekdays 9am–5pm. Are you dealing with a company that can give you assistance for support and parts and when you need it?

The cost of ef uent controlA D V E RT O R I A L
Managing dairy ef uent still seems to be an expensive and time consuming endeavour, with thousands of dollars spent on ponds and equipment only to end up in an even worse situation.
At Biomagic, the staff believe and work towards the idea that ‘surely there is a better way. Ef uent management should be easy’.
They believe it can be easy, inexpensive, and in fact should lead to cost savings as ef uent is a valuable resource.
To this end they strive to source cost effective products such as Impact, that actually work, save you more than you spend, and also reduce your environmental footprint.
What farmers have said about Impact:‘Impact was the best thing that has
ever happened. Now there is no longer even a need for a stirrer. Also, the cows
will eat the grass a couple of days after spraying the ef uent. Impact really is a no brainer’ — Mark Bon.
‘Since using Impact there has been lots of activity with the solids, which were previously just sinking, being digested. We haven’t touched the pond at all except for pumping out about seven times a year but the cleanliness of the pond is just incredible’ — Wenzel Wench.
‘Cows will eat the grass much sooner than usual after I’ve put the ef uent on the paddock. Last season I applied treated ef uent to my maize, before planting. The yield of the treated paddock was unbelievable’ — Grant Mitchell.

Goliath Gate Launching at Fieldays®A gate that can be driven over with an ATV, Ute, or even tractor, without cows going through? Not only is this possible, but it is now nally available and being launched at Innovations, at this years Fieldays®.
The Goliath Gate is the big brother of the Ride Over Gate, a Fieldays® Innovation winner from 2011. The Ride Over Gate, or ROG for short, is a gate that opens with just a nudge from a 2 or 4 Wheeler, and closes itself once the vehicle has driven over it.
They have proved popular for short wheel based vehicles, ATV’s, UTV’s, trailers, mobile feeding troughs, and mobile calf feeders.
They have been installed next to houses and sheds, as a backup to the road gate, or at the calving paddock for getting out of the paddock without the calves following. The ROG has also proved itself great for centre pivot irrigators to travel over. It can’t however cope with large vehicles, that was going to need some clever adaptations.
The Goliath is not only wider at 12, 13, or 14 foot, but is substantially taller, so that a vehicles’ front wheels are still on the gate holding it down as the rear wheels drive onto it. Rather than having
a large steel structure, long breglass rods are used which ex so as not to damage the ute or tractor. A small steel section on the side is to allow 4 Wheelers to use it. The Goliath can take heavy loads as the gate lies supported on the ground while being driven across.
Farm manager Thomas Chat eld has been driving a tractor and feedout wagon over a Goliath several times a day on their Otakiri wintering barn. He found it fantastic driving straight in without getting off to open the gate, and without having to negotiate his way through cows as they never tried to go through the Goliath. Robert Cleland of Paroa Stud was also quick to install one on his farm on his main tractor thoroughfare. He enjoys driving his Ute over the Goliath without having to worry about stock getting through.
The Goliath is entered in the LaunchNZ Innovation awards and is on display at the Wrangler site at their new location of G20 & G22.

SEAL THEDEAL
The event has been held twice prior in Waikato with event manager Andrew Reymer saying it is a unique
experience which allows like-minded individuals to ensure they get good deals, without the interruption of visitors that have no interest in the machinery.
Giant tractors, forage harvesters, silage, hay gear, cultivation and crop establishment gear, effluent spreaders, stirrers, pumps and irrigation equipment will be on display.
“It has grown from strong industry demand for a dedicated industry event,” says Andrew.
The concept of machinery days had been popular overseas for a long time and New Zealand hosted its first one in 2011 under the name ‘Ag in Action’.
He was inspired to organise his own version when he travelled to the United
Kingdom and the United States during his overseas experience visiting the original Grasslands. When he returned home, various machinery companies approached him saying they would like a specialised event.
“Everyone already knew what Grasslands was and I wanted expand on that and give it a New Zealand flavour which resulted in Grasslandz. It was about time we had something like this. It was really successful, the public loved it.”
Grasslandz covers any machine related to farming and is held bi-annually in early autumn so that exhibitors can indent orders for their customers.
“Most nor thern hemisphere machinery orders need to be placed around mid to late March, to get manufactured and delivered for the

Future events will include more opportunities for interested parties to have hands on experiences driving tractors
following spring. “It is an opportunity for buyers to ‘short list’ the gear they need to order from their dealers, see it working, and narrow down their choices before making the final decision.”
As the regional field days are held in the six weeks after Grasslandz, exhibitors are given the opportunity to finalise their sales without the need to display the full range of equipment at these shows, saving on machinery transport costs.
Andrew says visitors are largely attracted to the event as it offers live demonstrations, with active participation encouraged.
“I have witnessed myself observers of a machine in a demo saying to the guy beside him ‘I didn’t know these things could do that. That’s exactly the machine we need on our farm,” he says. “Seeing a machine being worked,
folded up, unfold, start up and throttled up brings the machine to life.” Due to the hot and dry summers, some silage exhibitors are having trouble finding lush crops to demonstrate on.
“The team acknowledge this and have worked very hard this year with grass specialist agronomists and trialled a range of different grass options from that used at the first two events. We have opted for a summer hardy Fescue/Red Clover mix that was grown this summer on site with some extremely pleasing results.
“Agricom Seeds have been instrumental in working with us to ‘put the grass back into Grasslandz’. We have also engaged soil fertility companies such as BioGrow to unlock the sales potential after years of cropping have taken it’s toll. “Add to that the key difference of a huge investment
in onsite irrigation with three irrigation water bores opened up and the next event looks set to be greener than ever.”
Andrew says the event’s point of difference is that it is not tacked onto any other events and focusses entirely on agricultural machinery including.
“It has been working really well with dealers and manufacturers.
People are able to see the product demonstrated and can then follow it up at another field day. If they have narrowed their choices down from five brands to two, they can then talk about financing options and trade in prices. It is a chance for people to check out the new gear available.”
Planning begins almost immediately after one event has finished. “The first year is just background planning. Six months before the event things really start to take off.”
The future plans for Grasslandz involve more of a dealer drive. Tractor dealers around the country often offer drive days where people can come and try the tractor out for themselves to make sure they are purchasing one that suits their requirements and Andrew is working on bringing that aspect to Grasslandz.
The most rewarding part about organising such an event for Andrew is receiving positive feedback from the exhibitors.
“It’s great when exhibitors come up to you saying they have sold this much, and when new exhibitors put their names down for the next event.”
The next event will be held on January 28–29, 2016, beside State Highway 26. Eureka, Hamilton.
For more information on Grasslandz visit www.grasslandz.co.nz.

A D V E RT O R I A L
Calf rearers Noel West and Leanne Tubbett discovered AgriVantage at the 2011 Fieldays®. Noel wasn’t sold on whey CMRs, wary of claims that whey CMR couldn’t be fed to calves under 21 days, nor mixed with whole milk, and that calves couldn’t alternate between whole milk and whey CMR.
They subsequently won 10 bags of Sprayfo Blue from AgriVantage.
Business manager Warren Tanner visited them on-farm to discuss the bene ts of whey CMR, including what to expect in calf development.
Still unsure, Noel and Leanne ran an on-farm experiment, placing 20 calves in two pens with identical conditions. Ten had their usual CMR, ten received 500g Sprayfo Blue in 3L of water once daily.

“We then fed Sprayfo Blue to all 1,200 calves. Changing from a curding to a whey CMR was seamless — the calves seemed to leap forward on Sprayfo Blue. We’ve used it every season since.”

New developments for Yardmaster®B U S I N E S S P R O F I L E
Yardmaster® continues their innovative cycle at this year’s NZ National Agricultural Fieldays® with the launching of two new exciting developments.
Invented by Ken Reid, one of the founders of Reid and Harrison in 1961, the Yardmaster® product has been the focus of the company since its formation in 1968.
The rst of these two most recent developments is a self-priming multistage pump, speci cally designed for shore mounted application where high ef ciency is also a requirement. This self-priming feature reduces the need for any manual intervention on startup.
Reid and Harrison chief executive Keith Cooke said customers have asked for a viable alternative to the oating frame systems.
“With the existing shore mounted stirrer, we now combine the Yardmaster® self-priming pump to bring safe accessibility to the storage system.
“With the Yardmaster® established record of reliability and low service costs, we have a product that is designed and made by New Zealanders for our conditions.”
Also new to the market is a redevelopment of the Yardmaster® Screw Press Separator. This latest version refocuses on a strengthened design for the body, frame and screen. In addition there is improved serviceability access.
“We have listened closely to customer feedback on how to improve the consistency of operation of the Screw
Press,” said Mr Cooke. “This newly-worked design is entirely for the end-user bene t and keeps in with the Yardmaster® brand promise of ‘reliable and hardworking’.”
Reid and Harrison will present two complete solutions — shore mounted and oating frame based concepts, at the eld days. This includes the two most recent developments, along
with their newly acquired rotary drum separator and recently released automation system.
“Seeing the products in context of the system is important to understanding how the products integrate,” added Mr Cooke.
Yardmaster® products will feature at stand number F16 during the NZ National Agricultural Fieldays®.

A mixture of pioneering and ambitious spirit has meant the company has evolved into a global network of more than 3,000 designers, architects, planners and engineers working across Australasia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.
This will be Opus’ fourth year at the NZ National Agricultural Fieldays® and they will be concentrating on promoting their new pond drop test.
The Opus Pond Drop Test measures the rate of change in the level of an effluent pond and is accepted by numerous regional councils as an
appropriate test for assessing effluent pond sealing. The OPDT is especially useful for dairy farmers at the moment given the dairy payout forecast and Opus aim to save client’s money. The tests enable farmers to decide whether or not they need to replace their effluent ponds.
Senior Environmental Engineer Andrew Johnson and the Opus Rural team are kept extremely busy with the OPDT’s and this year at the NZ National Agricultural Fieldays®, Opus will have a well-staffed exhibitor’s stand in the main pavilion with scientists, planners, engineers and rural specialists to answer all questions.
“We all know where the dairy payout is at the moment so a lot of farmers are looking at ways they can cut back the costs. This test helps farmers decide if
they need to replace the pond. We really are promoting lower costs and raising our profile,” Andrew says. Originally from the UK, Andrew came to New Zealand in 2005 and married a Kiwi. He has a Mechanical Engineering degree from Loughborough University and specialises in wastewater, stormwater and water supplies, holding a position with Opus for the past 10 years.
“I love the challenge of working in the rural sector. I’m not stuck at my desk all day and I love getting my hands dirty.
“Opus has a wealth of chartered professional engineers and it is our
responsibility that anything we do is done to a high standard.”
Helping farmers and the farming industry to optimise farm profitability and environmental performance by providing cost-effective, technically appropriate options at the farm scale is what Opus Rural does best.
“One thing we do encourage is that farmers spend their money wisely. Sometimes it is better to spend a bit more money upfront and get the job done right instead of further down the track when things need to be fixed,” Andrew says.An Opus team member conducts a pond drop test

Chargrilled oregano lamb loin chops with Skordalia, smoked paprika and cumin oil
A D V E RT O R I A L
Chef Al Brown loves cooking this recipe on his Flare Fire and we think you will too. “The avour you get from cooking meat over hot coals is unprecedented, and really takes the humble lamb chop to a new level. I use roasted garlic in the Skordalia, as I nd fresh too aggressive. If you are going to use fresh garlic, start with a teaspoonful and work your way up from there. Don’t forget that the avour of fresh garlic continues to grow and develop.” Serves 6.
Step 1: Oregano lamb chopsIngredients:18 x lamb loin chops1 tbsp garlic ( nely chopped)¼ cup oregano leaves (roughly chopped)2 tbsp fresh mint (roughly chopped)2 lemons ( ne zest only)¼ cup extra virgin olive oilMethod:
Place the lamb chops in a suitable dish and add the rest of the ingredients. Massage the herbs etc into the chops and leave to marinate at least a couple of hours in the fridge, or preferably overnight.Step 2: Smoked paprika and cumin oilIngredients:½ cup Canola Oil1 tbsp cumin seeds (roasted and ground)1 tbsp smoked Spanish paprika½ tsp turmericMethod:
Place all the ingredients in a jar with a secure lid. Shake together vigorously. Leave to sit for at least a day, shaking intermittently. The longer you leave the oil to sit, the stronger the avour from the spices will get.
Step 3: SkordaliaIngredients:½ kg oury potatoes½ cup ground almonds (lightly toasted)1 cup milk¼ cup roasted garlic ( nely chopped))4 tbsp lemon juiceUp to ½ cup extra virgin olive oilFlaky sea saltFreshly cracked black pepperMethod:
Place the potatoes in a suitable sized saucepan. Cover with cold salted water, bring to a boil and simmer until soft and cooked through. Strain, then put through a ricer or mouli grater. Stir through the ground almonds, then add the milk, roasted garlic and lemon juice. Finish by enriching with the olive oil. The texture should resemble a smooth wet mashed potato. Season with salt and pepper.Step 4 Cooking and servingIngredients:Marinated oregano lamb chops.SkordaliaSmoked paprika and cumin oilFlaky sea saltFreshly cracked black pepper
Method:Heat up your char grill
to high heat.Bring the chops up to
room temperature. Season with salt and pepper. Place on the grill and cook for two or three minutes either side. Remove and rest for ve minutes.
To serve, spoon down some skordalia onto a plate and top with a couple of chops. Pour over a little of the smoked paprika cumin oil and serve. A green salad alongside works perfectly.

Don’t let stress take your healthA D V E RT O R I A L
Farming today can be very stressful, not only physically but mentally too.
Stress is a major contributory cause of disease in the body. Why? Because stress can affect the digestive system and nutritional absorption. The bowels are the engine of our health, important for good gut health and nutritional absorption, essential for a strong immune system. Sleep patterns are affected by the mind’s inability to switch off. Joints and muscles can ache and twitch, energy levels can drop.
The body’s ability to cope with stress is different for each of us and dependent on many factors. Your body gives many signals that something is wrong, but most of us do not recognise these messages. Take the guess work out of staying healthy with hemaview live blood screening and hair analysis. Through a tiny drop of blood you can see the affect your lifestyle choices and stress are having on your health. Your hair can show nutritional de ciencies, stress triggers, allergic sensitivities, even the effects of electromagnetic elds that bombard our body from the many technological advances in our lives today.
You wouldn’t neglect your farm, so don’t neglect your health. Let us help you, help your mind and body stay healthy.

Pumpn 24/7Shane Phillips grew up on a local dairy farm where he gained both knowledge and a farm work ethic. After leaving school he began working in the water, ef uent and engineering industry.
Shane and his wife Adele had the opportunity to purchase an existing engineering workshop and expanded to include water and ef uent management as well, calling their company Pumpn.
“We have now owned the company for 11 years. With 18 staff working alongside us, we believe Pumpn is a name customers can trust.
We try to be the driving force in the eld for entire pump, irrigation and ef uent management systems,” said Shane.
“We want to be people’s rst choice. I understand the dairy sector is a forever evolving and changing industry which is why we pride ourselves on offering farmers superior systems which are designed with the future in mind.”
The Torpedo travelling cannon, shore position pond stirrer, an easy skid sprinkler, and a weeping wall vibration panel, along with other products, will be on display at the Fieldays®.
“This is our rst year of having our own stand. We get a lot of enquiries and the Fieldays® is the best place to come and view what we have to offer. The vibe panel will be on display and can be seen working.
We will be at the Fieldays® on site H13.

Rotagen Combo and Vetsan Super Concentrate
A programme of preventative treatment with Rotagen Combo, the natural calf scour product, is a good option for protecting valuable replacement heifer calves which may be exposed to a viral or bacterial infection resulting in infectious scours.
A D V E RT O R I A L
Rotagen Combo is part of an economical rearing strategy to protect calves and help them perform at their best over their lifetime. It is a registered animal remedy unique in New Zealand. Similar products are widely used overseas as growth promotants in calves and piglets with very good results.
It is made from the dried egg yolk from hens that have been vaccinated with speci c antigens. The hyper immune status of these hens achieve results in very high levels of antibodies in the yolk of the eggs, which provide a passive immunity to speci c infection in the gut of the calf.
The main cause of neonatal calf scours is rotavirus, a viral disease picked up from carrier cows following calving. A simple programme of treating calves at birth with a preventative drench of Rotagen Combo once a day for ve days will help prevent clinical cases of rotavirus.
The key to a successful regime is treating all the heifer replacement calves and any others being kept. The other important aspect of infectious scour control is to reduce the environmental contamination of viruses that may be in the environment.
An effective policy should be developed with staff for calf pens before the season begins.
A good hygiene strategy is to use a virucide, such as Vetpak’s Vetsan Super Concentrate to spray out the calf sheds before the season begins and throughout the rearing season.
For more information on Rotagen Combo and Vetsan Super Concentrate go to www.vetpak.co.nz or talk to your local vet clinic.

Aiming for the topby Andy Bryenton
It’s been more than 80 years since Nissan — once known as Datsun — first produced a light commercial truck for tradespeople and industry.
In those intervening years there have been some big changes in the market, but two key factors remain evergreen. Those who are seeking a deck-backed workhorse still want to know that their chosen machine is going to last the distance. And, as it has been for many of those decades, it’s a tough battle at the top in this hotly contested sector of the market.
Nissan’s 12th generation Navara builds on the success of their D40 model, though the 2015 ute offers rakish styling and a commitment to the new philosophy in light commercials — the concept of a vehicle which can carry heavy loads all week and still handles like a sedan when finesse is required. Certainly, the Navara’s interior bears this out, with a car-like dual instrument cluster and a seven inch infotainment screen taking pride of place. But the underpinnings of this vehicle guarantee heavy-duty performance, with the Navara boasting 1,000kg payload capacity and triple that number when hooked up to the towbar.
While a range of specifications will be available for the global market, it’s likely that Kiwi drivers will enjoy the same 2.3 litre advanced turbo diesel engine as their Australian counterparts, with up to 140kW and 450Nm of torque on tap. The old Nissan adage of ‘payload and playload’ has been put into practice,
with plenty of useful space on hand both within and without, and Nissan claim that the new Navara will offer gains in agility, ride and fuel economy when it arrives here in the very near future. With a new facility in Thailand developed to produce this ute, a debut at the forthcoming Fieldays® is widely anticipated, following Nissan’s claims of a first quarter release.
In a market recently dominated by the Ford Ranger, and hotly contested by the ever-popular Toyota Hilux, car makers are well aware that their A game is required to make an impression in
the light commercial sector. With bold exterior styling, ample power and the hint of an aggressively sharp price, expect this new contender to aim high, delivering both on-road and off-road capability to impress.

Built for the tough stuffby Andy Bryenton
They’re the biggest auto maker you may never have heard of — with a combined output measured in the hundreds of thousands of vehicles.
From the successor to the Willys jeep through to aircraft and mighty military transports and tractors, Mahindra are a force to be reckoned with.
Mahindra’s Pik-up is relatively new to these shores, and the fully kitted out version we were given to test drive — complete with bull bars, a double cab and a timber-and-steel deck — looks as different from its competitors in the utility sector as the outgoing Land Rover Defender did from a RAV4. If the term ‘military’ comes to mind, that’s no mistake — the Indian army, one of the world’s biggest forces, looks to Mahindra for transport. The other word which comes to mind is ‘spacious’, as the interior boasts enough room for a whole burly crew, with ample legroom and headroom for those in the back seats. Even behind a double cab, the back deck is the size you’d find on some single-cab utes, and looking at the single cab variant wellside, one can tell that these machines are made to indulge heavy, bulky loads.
That means a ton on the back, four passengers, two and half tons towing capacity — and the ability to take that load anywhere.
Our test track for the Pik-up was not a parking lot (though it did slide neatly into a supermarket parking space).
Not even a country gravel road. No — the Mahindra’s minders insisted we take their new ute properly off road — which meant visiting a range of coastal sandstone cliffs, rolling, rutted paddocks and steep hills.
Even with road tyres, the Pik-up handled some rough and rollicking terrain with aplomb, tackling steep hills, dirt and deep sand. It did it all with a
sense of mechanically engineered acuity — the nicely balanced click and slide of a rifle bolt.
Under that tough exterior, Mahindra’s 2.2 litre turbo diesel packs parts by Bosch, and the kind of variable geometry turbocharger pioneered by the Porsche 911. Eaton supply a clever automatic differential locking system. The five-speed manual box recalls certain great off-road utes we could name, but shouldn’t. It all comes together to create a balanced and functional whole.

Lanolin based lubricant solves corrosion issuesThe aggressive nature of agricultural
fertilisers, manure and other environmental factors has a high impact on the corrosion of machinery including the chassis of quad bikes, vehicles, ground spreading machinery and handling equipment, machinery and tools.
As we know this equipment is expensive and can rust out within ve years with no protection.
Prolan provides a solution — it is an environmentally friendly lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made from lanolin. Prolan’s key advantage is its ability to stay on for long periods once applied. Prolan Lanolin lubricants and grease lubes have a natural af nity for all metal surfaces. They penetrate and protect your assets by forming a natural barrier that prevents corrosive agents penetrating the surface. Prolan lubricants resist being washed off surfaces, providing the ultimate protection in extreme environments.
Prolan products are very versatile and have a large range of applications they have been used successfully on quad bike and vehicle chassis, boat trailers, motors, marinas and engineering workshops to name a few. A number of fertiliser companies around New Zealand have used Prolan to coat loaders internally and underneath. The machine can still be washed with a water blaster and the protective coating will still remain. The
B U S I N E S S P R O F I L E
product can be easily applied through a spray or undersealing gun.
New to the market this year and promoted at the Fieldays® is the Prolan Anti-seize grease tube. This tube is a must for any maintenance toolbox and is easy to slip into the pocket. This grease provides a natural long-lasting barrier once applied to threads, bolts, pins, bushes, pumps, rubber seals, battery terminals and wiring, or when assembling equipment it enables bolts to be undone years later and prevents galling on stainless threads. Prolan anti-seize grease has proved itself worldwide gaining International food-grade safety and drinking water approvals. Prolan is
safe to use, environmentally friendly and is biodegradable. We welcome your visit to our NEW Site H24 — Below Gate 2 — Look for the ying orange blimp.

New site for RECHARGE Battery Conditioner at the Fieldays®
A D V E RT O R I A L
“After 15 years on site K-19 right outside the main pavilion, which wasn’t even there when we started selling off that site, we have been forced to move to the other side of the pavilion to a new site — K-25,” says Gerard Anselmi of RECHARGE Battery Revitalizer and Conditioner.
“Sulphation is a major problem with lead-acid batteries and the less they’re used the worse it is. All batteries sulphate — you buy them with sulphation and they only get worse till they die.
“A RECHARGE treatment will dissolve those sulphur ions back into the electrolyte to hold the charge again. The battery regains its capacity and stops corrosion of lead plates.
“A lot of farmers in our RECHARGE Conditioning Programme are getting eight to ten years from most batteries and some are getting a heck of a lot more by simply dosing them early, treating them every two to three years and keeping them charged.
“Yes you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell — treating and re-sealing with silicone, sika ex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like forklifts, golf carts, scissor hoists and lighting system batteries.”
Recharge is available from Farmlands and Auto-One stores and will also be featured at the Fieldays® at Mystery Creek® in June at the new site — K-25. For more information go to website www.recharge.net.nz and follow us on Facebook.

Calling all mums in businessRaising a family is one of life’s great challenges - another is starting a business.
Entrepreneurial mothers are being asked to put themselves forward for the Fly Buys Mumtrepreneur Awards, a scheme rewarding women who have taken a business idea and turned it into a reality while raising a family at home.
From clever start-ups to companies gone global, the programme is open to businesses from all sectors and is awarding 10,000 Fly Buys points to category winners and an additional 40,000 Fly Buys points to the Supreme Mumtrepreneur of the Year Award winner — enough for a technology overhaul at work or home, or return flights and accommodation for an overseas family holiday.
Last year’s inaugural winners showcased the diversity of successful businesses run by Kiwi mums. Winners ranged from Wellington-based Bridgit Hawkins and her company Regen which helps dairy farmers manage the environmental impact of dairy effluent, to Mairangi Bay’s Sandra Finlay who runs The Growth Collective, a service linking fresh food suppliers and schools
so parents can order low cost and nutritious lunches for their kids.
Fly Buys chief executive Stephen England-Hall said the awards recognise the growing number of New Zealand women who manage to juggle the dual demands of family life and running a company.
“From businesswomen with sustainable ventures they manage from home to those exporting overseas, we’re looking for mumtrepreneurs from all backgrounds and levels who have identified a market opportunity and built a clear vision for the future.
“Balancing work and motherhood is a challenge at the best of times so our hats are tipped to women who manage to simultaneously run a business and a family home. They’re a dedicated, enterprising and hardworking group and probably some of the busiest people in New Zealand,” said Mr England-Hall.
The supreme winner will be chosen from six category winners, including Best Product or Service, Best Online
or Technology Business, Best Creative Business, Best Food and Beverage Business, Best Social Enterprise or Not for Profit, and the Best Agri Business.
Entrants will be judged by an expert panel that includes Trilogy co-founder
