father’s day at your clubsFather’s Day is just around the corner! Wagga RSL and Commercial Clubs are the perfect place to celebrate with Dad this Father’s Day.

Get the family together at the RSL for a buffet luncheon in the Mirage Room packed with fresh seafood, vegetables and all the trimmings, cold meat platters and a delicious dessert buffet. Every Dad that books into the Father’s Day Luncheon in the Mirage at the RSL will receive a complimentary middy of their choice. The Wagga RSL Father’s Day buffet is available from 12pm, Sunday 6th September, for $32 per adult, $14.95 per child and children under 4yrs eat free. The Sunday Telegraph is campaigning to break the taboo surrounding youth suicide and mental ill-health. These problems can be addressed, but only if we are brave enough to talk about it.

Following the remarkable success of the Sydney forums, they are bringing their forums to regional NSW. On stage will be clinical experts, parents, young people and local police telling their stories; who are all available to answer audience questions. A kid’s league clinic will be held on the day by partner, National Rugby League, featuring NRL players including Dene Halatau, Tariq Sims and Dan Hunt, who will also be on the forum panels in the evening. The ground-breaking forum connects the community, especially parents, with the services and experts who can help.

The Sunday Telegraph Youth Mental Health Forum will be held in Wagga on Tuesday 22nd September from 6pm at the Wagga RSL Club. Visit sundaytelegraph.com.au/canwetalk for more information or to register to attend.

KoKoda youth challengeWagga RSL Club is very proud to have sponsored Laura Dick and Robert Heath to take part in the 2015 Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge. The program has been keeping the memory of the Kokoda campaign alive since 2004, with this year marking the 73rd anniversary of the battle. Laura and Robert took the challenge of completing the ten day trek, an emotional, mental and physical journey.

Laura and Robert returned to Wagga on Saturday 15th August with a new outlook on life. They both agreed it was more inspirational than they had ever thought possible. It provided them with an experience that can now be applied to everyday life, many life lessons were learnt and a massive appreciation for what they have is more apparent. They understand the significance of leadership and how important it is to work as a team. A highlight of the trek was the emotional dawn service on the battle site of Isurava. They are both very thankful to the RSL Club for this amazing opportunity and are looking forward to sharing their experience with their families, friends the local community and beyond.

defeat the heat this summerWagga RSL Club are part of a twelve-month ‘Defeat the Heat’ pilot partnership between Red Cross and Clubs NSW. The aim of this project is to reduce the health impact of heatwaves in the community by raising awareness of the risks of heatwaves and providing a safe place to shelter during heatwaves. Heatwaves account for more deaths than any other hazard in Australia, including fires and floods. Simple steps can be taken to reduce the impact of heatwaves and the ‘Defeat the Heat’ project aims to promote that information. A heatwave is defined as ‘three days or more of high maximum and minimum temperatures that is unusual for that location’. Should a heatwave be declared, Red Cross will assist the RSL Club in providing Emergency Services volunteers to welcome community members who seek shelter from the heat. The Club will provide activities, shelter and information for community members during heatwaves.
