Modular system shown with box seal

Watson Bowman Acme designed, built, and installed the first sealed modular joint system nearly three decades ago. This longevity was built, in part, from the basic design concept comprised of a multiple steel support bar system, which combines strength to support traffic loads with the flexibility to accom-modate continual structural movement. Today, Watson Bowman Acme is the worldwide leader in the manufacture of large movement modular expansion joints for challenging long-span bridge structure applications.

Page 5: Wabo Expansion Joint Systems

Available in both box and strip seal versions, Wabo®Modular joint systems effectively seal joint openings while preventing runoff water from passing through to the substructure. The box seal system provides the ultimate in sealed modular joint design and reliability. The strip seal system uses an inner-locking single layer strip gland that is easy to install in the field.

As a worldwide leader in expansion joint design innovation, Watson Bowman Acme Corp. now offers high rotation modu-lar system capabilities through innovative rotational bearing design.

Wabo®Modular joint systems are comprised of five important design features. These features make the modular system tough, long-lasting, watertight and virtually maintenance free. Field proven under the toughest bridge conditions everywhere in the world, the Wabo®Modular joint system is designed and built in accordance with the highest fabrication standards and can be engineered to meet a variety of conditions and move-ment requirements.

Contact Watson Bowman Acme for additional design options to meet the dynamic movement needs and constructability requirements of your project.

The Wabo®X-Cel Modular is designed to accommodate longitudinal, trans-verse and rotational movements while also satisfying the day-to-day thermal requirements with life-cycle fatigue capabilities. The Wabo®X-Cel system accommodates multi-directional accelerated movements to specifi-cally designed support boxes and their internally mounted sliding compo-nents. High rotational support bearings allow the support bar to move. This arrangement results in low stress being imparted into the expansion joint as compared to high-resistant, mechanically rotated, or swiveling system designs. This system is ideal for both seismic and true multi-directional movement conditions. Similar to the Modular system, the X-Cel system is also available in both box and strip seal versions.

The Wabo®X-Cel Modular is the only commercially available system which has provided performance during an actual seismic occurrence.

The Wabo® X-Cel Modular is the result of a four-year research-and-development program. During this time, there were full-scale performance tests run at the Univer-sity of California at Berkeley PEER Center. This program isolated critical components and functions essential to successful long-term multi-movement performance. This system is designed to smoothly handle tens of mil-lions of movements imposed on flexible structures.

The Wabo®X-Cel Modular system has undergone very successful multi-movement testing at various speeds, ranging from 1 to 60 inches per second, as well as nu-merous seismic simulators - with no observed damage.

Our continuous research and development has resulted in innovative inspectable and replaceable components for the X-Cel modular system. These patent-pending de-sign features are available exclusively through Watson Bowman Acme.

Jeene®Multi-Directional Structural Sealing Joint System

Jeene® is a patented structural sealing joint system comprised of a neoprene profile, which is air-pressurized and bonded in place with a specially formulated epoxy ad-hesive. When properly installed, the high performance Jeene® joint system will not tear away, protrude out of, or slip from its original position when exposed to repeated mechanical or thermal movements. Complete adhesion of the epoxy to the profile and joint wall is achieved due to the air inflation during installation. Jeene® is the most durable, versatile, cost-effective, and watertight expansion joint in the industry.

Wabo®CompressionSealPreformed Elastomeric Joint Seal

Wabo®CompressionSeal bridge series is a preformed elastic joint seal manufactured of neoprene and installed with a lubricant adhesive. It is highly resistant to deteriora-tion from exposure to weather, sunlight, oils and impact. When properly installed, the Wabo®CompressionSeal bridge series provides a permanent seal for any type con-struction whether in bridges, parking decks, or buildings.

Featuring an internal elastomeric cross-sectional web configuration, the seal design allows it to exert a continuous and uniform force against the joint walls therefore ef-fectively preserving water tightness. Even at the lowest design temperature, the seal will retain its elasticity while maintaining a minimum of 15% compression to assure a dependable seal. The Wabo®CompressionSeal bridge series has proven itself to be an effective and efficient seal in resisting the differential movements and extreme condi-tions found in high impact structures.

Wabo®TransFlexMolded Rubber Segmental Expansion Joint System

Wabo®TransFlex is the original reinforced elastomeric molded rubber expansion joint system. All sections feature tongue and groove fittings for tight end-to-end mating across decks and at curbs and are steel reinforced. It can be installed in new decks, or in older structures on rehabilitation projects. All models adapt readily to skew angles. Properly installed, the Wabo®TransFlex system will accommodate anticipated thermal movements reject debris and create a level, smooth-riding, wear-resistant surface.

Tongue and grooves at the end of each rubber panel prevent uplift or separation

while ensuring a watertight connection

Low profile system height allows for sealing joints where there are blockout

height restriction

Wabo®SafetyFlexSafety Cover for Expansion Joint Openings (U.S. Patent #6.751.918)

Wabo®SafetyFlex is a hinged, rubber encapsulated, steel cover system that is ideal for pedestrian walkways. The design of the system reduces potential tripping hazards by providing a smooth, slip resistant transition over expansion joint openings. Indepen-dent metal plates integral to the rubber cover allows the system to flex in response to changes in vertical displacement between opposing slabs. In addition, the use of metal plates provides load carrying capability across the joint opening. The rubber cover also reduces the sound caused by pedestrian traffic as they travel across the expansion joint opening.

Wabo®Crete IIElastomeric Concrete

Wabo®Crete II is a two-component polyurethane expansion joint header with spe-cialty aggregate, 100% solids material for use in exterior construction environments. Wabo®Crete II is a unique mixture which monolithically bonds the expansion joint to the deck, creating a waterproof system. Wabo®Crete II absorbes traffic impact loads and evenly disperses them into the deck, while allowing the system to flex with deck loads. It is resistant to ozone, UV, deicing chemicals, and abrasives. The ad-dition of heat is not required to increase flow or cure the material. It will self level in the blockout.

Resistant to deicing chemicals and abrasives

Does not require the addition of heat to increase flow or cure

Ease of installation – easily mixed and typically cures in within 1 to hours

Self-leveling and ambient cure

Absorbs impact loads and performs in various climate conditions

FEATURES:

As an expansion joint header/nosing for various expansion joint systems

Spall repair of existing joint headers/nosing applications

Void filler

RECOMMENDED FOR:

Photograph illustrates the flexibility of WaboCrete II

Wabo®Crete II, when properly installed, can accommodate a variety of different environmental and real world conditions. Wabo®Crete II has been specially for-mulated with the proper balance of liquid to aggregate ratio to create a product that combines the best in hardness, strength, flexibility, and durability. Watson Bowman Acme formulated the product to meet the demands of today’s expansion control applications and is proud to be the original producer of the product.
