Page 14: W14 - Bumiputera Students Issues

• Bumiputra students’ attitudes can be divided into two groups which are positive and negative attitude.

• To analyze and classify their attitudes, we might become quite stereotyping.

• Based on our observation, research and some informal interviews, we have found out that bumiputra students’ have failed to be good example for other races because of their negative attitudes.

Before we look the list of negative attitudes, let us look at what are their

positive attitudes…

1. Kind and sweet

2. Caring and understanding

3. Love to dream and work for it.

4. They are good if we not compare them to other races in Malaysia.

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- Malay students lag in academic achievements behind students of other races because they do not work hard and do not pay full attention to their studies, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

He said Malay students did not show interest in their studies.

Citing an example, he said many Malay students did not do their homework and instead spent their time loitering at shopping complexes after classes without the knowledge of their parents.

"It is no wonder that this type of students did not achieve success in their studies," he said when addressing about 1,000 students of Sekolah Alam Shah who took part in an assembly in conjunction with Patriotism Month Celebration 2005 here Wednesday.

Also present were Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

Malaysia Book Of Records Sdn Bhd presented an award to the students for creating the biggest jigsaw puzzle in the country.

Dr Mahathir said Malay students could emulate the learning system of non-Malay students and work harder to achieve success.

"We will not succeed if our learning system is not right," he said.

Analysis

• Malaysia’s world class education system appears to have produced unemployable graduates with 90% of them bumiputeras.

• Malaysia’s public sector historically performed the function of absorbing Bumiputera graduates but with a bloating public sector but with critical shortages in skilled areas (doctors, nurses, science and mathematics teachers) and Malaysia’s fiscal position reaching worrying stage, this option is now limited.

Page 29: W14 - Bumiputera Students Issues

• An assumption that public universities are not being in tune with industry needs and/or producing graduates that  are not in demand.

• The key criteria employers look for in potential hires are a good command of English, a good attitude and a strong work ethic," says Suresh Thiru, vice-president of operations at online recruitment company JobStreet.com, which has 800,000 registered job seekers. "Many are unable to secure a good job because their English is poor," he adds. - From The New Straits Times 20 March 2005

Clarification

• As long as Bumiputra students are not adequately prepared by our primary and secondary education system to handle university-level work.

• Stop wasting our money on fanciful grand projects to help them in university or after they graduate.

• Graduates need to know the importance of academic performance, communication skills, work attitude and ethics.
