631-727-2881 • www.suffolkcountyhistoricalsociety.org EXHIBITS On This Site—Still Here: The Indigenous People of Long Island, in our Gish Gallery. Opening July 15 at 1pm. This art-based photography and research project exhibit by Shinnecock artist Jeremy Dennis aims to create awareness of and help preserve cultur-ally significant and sacred Native American sites on Long Island. Free opening reception admission + light refreshments on Saturday, July 15. Open thru September 30. Grucci: The Family That Lights the Skies, in our Weathervane Gallery. Known as “Amer-ica’s First Family of Fireworks,” six generations of the Grucci family have been lighting the skies since 1850. After emigrating from South Italy, the family established their head-quarters in Suffolk County and have remained here ever since, as their industry and their art was spread around the globe. From world record awards to military contracts, tragedy to triumphs, the Suffolk County Historical Society’s summer exhibit celebrates the his-tory of this Suffolk County family through their private family photographs, industry artifacts, and behind-the-scenes videos. Curated by Victoria Berger, this special summer exhibit will run to September 9, 2017.Over Here, Over There: Long Island & the Great War, in our Grand Staas Gallery. Commemorating the centennial of America’s entry into the First World War, the exhibit features artifacts, maps, photographs, weaponry, posters, and more depicting Long Is-landers’ experiences during the war . . . from the front lines to the home front, neutrality to belligerence, and mobilization to victory. Curated by Richard F. Welch. Exhibit Design by Richard P. Doctorow. Exhibit will run to January 2018.Votes for New York Women (1917-2017), a Centennial Exhibit, in our History in the Hall Gallery. When women in New York State won the right to vote one hundred years ago—making 2017 the centennial of that historic civil rights victory—their success changed the national political landscape and was a critical tipping point on the road to a constitutional amendment three years later. This exhibit celebrates the centennial by narrating the stories of Long Island women activists who dedicated themselves to the powerful grassroots movement. Curated by Wendy Polhemus-Annibell. On display thru December 2017.Mapping Suffolk County. Featuring a wide assortment of original and reproduction his-toric maps of Suffolk County, from the 1700s to the 1900s, in our Gish Gallery.

The author will share his personal story about safeguarding birds of prey on Long Island. For more than two centuries, the bald eagle has served as our national bird, but in the 1950s their numbers plummeted, along with those of other birds of prey, due to widespread use of environmental poisons such as DDT. Some of the efforts that ultimately halted this threat began in Suf-folk County, where local community activism grew into a national campaign on behalf of endangered species and their habitats. The bald eagle’s recovery has involved people from all walks of life, and it shows that each of us has a role to play in protecting the natural world. Members Free; Non-Members $5. Includes wine and cheese + admission to current exhibits.
