Sloan’s Journey into Product Transparency Reports

On March 16, Sloan officially introduced the world to our first product transparency reports - the widest breadth of transparency reports in the commercial market place – Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Health Product Declarations (HPDs) and Declare labels.

We’re beginning our product transparency journey with the very product that put Sloan on the map – our manual Royal flushometer. We were also able to incorporate our Regal and Sloan flushometers into that very same report and produced a second report for our top selling piston flushometer – GEM 2.

Sloan partnered with SCS Global, a trusted leader in third-party environmental and sustainability certification, auditing, testing and standards development. The project team at SCS Global ensured our EPDs were prepared in accordance with the ISO 14025 standard and that these reports were verified by a neutral and independent third-party verifier.

Sloan’s EPD reports provide us and our customers with many production details such as the environmental impact of raw material acquisition, energy use and efficiency, content of materials and chemical substances, emissions to air, soil and water and waste generation.

In addition to our EPDs, Sloan also released the first HPD in the commercial plumbing industry. Health Product Declarations disclose the materials or ingredients in our products and their associated health effects. HPDs help specifiers identify if chemicals of concern are present in any building products. Currently, the main chemicals of concern identified in our HPDs include lead and zinc, both of these chemicals are components of our semi-red brass. However, most brass recipes contain these same chemicals.

In addition to our EPDs and HPDs, Sloan alsoreceived Declare labels for our Waterfree and

Hybrid Urinals. Declare is a transparency platform and product database allowing manufacturers to publicly ‘declare’ the life-cycle sustainability of their products or projects based on the inclusion of environment- and occupant-friendly materials and chemicals. All ingredients are vetted through their Red List which identifies over 800 chemicals that have been designated as harmful to living creatures, including humans, or the environment. Products that contain these chemicals may not be included in materials used in construction that seeks to meet the criteria of the Living Building Challenge (LBC). Sloan’s Waterfree and Hybrid urinals are certified to the highest Declare level as Red List Free.

Because our EPDs adhere to the strict guidelines set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)14025 standard and our report scope is cradle-to-grave, we can offer our customers valuable LEED v4 points through the Materials and Resources Credit category section. The Building Product Disclosure and Optimization - Environmental Product Declaration section states in Option 1 that a project must use at least 20 different permanently installed products sourced from at least five different manufacturers that meet one of several criteria listed in the LEED v4 standard.

Our Red List Free Declare labels also provide a premium opportunity for Waterfree and Hybrid urinals to be specified in Living Building Challenge projects.

We are already working on our next set of reports and additional Sloan EPDs, HPDs and Declare labels will be available in the near future including our top selling sensor flushometers, our vitreous china lines and faucets. Checkout all of our current transparency reports on our landing page at:

A Lasting Legacy - Saving Water with Sloan® All Along the Way

One of the federal agencies that the new administration has targeted for drastic budget cuts and institutional change is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The most recent reports state that there will be a 31 percent reduction in funding (approximately 2.5 billion dollars) and a 20 percent reduction in staffing (approximately 3200 jobs). While many programs are of interest to Sloan, the main program that pertains to the plumbing industry and to our Sloan products is the EPA WaterSense Program. While there is no indication that the Watersense Program is slated for these reductions or any changes, this voluntaryprogram has been so successful that several states and large jurisdictions have adopted these measures. The table below provides an up to

date summary of these jurisdictions.

Since its inception in 2006, WaterSense has helped consumers save a cumulative 1.5 trillion gallons of water and more than $32.6 billion in water and energy bills. By the end of 2015, reductions of 212 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity and 78 million metric tons of carbon dioxide were achieved through the use of WaterSense labeled products For those products in the commercial sector, specifically flushometer valve water closets and flushing urinals, Sloan has the most Watersense listed products. This commitment to water efficiency will continue even if the Watersense program is halted or altered by the new administration.

Select Sloan products are listed with the Water-Sense label, ensuring consumer confidence in water-efficient products. For a complete list, visit Sloan WaterSense Products.

With the lengthy and storied history of both, it is only fitting that Sloan be present in the Los Angeles Union Station. And much of the credit goes to Jesse Falconi.

When David David of Delco Sales in California received an order for flushometer single flush side mounts, he followed up on the order. He discovered that those wouldn’t be the only Sloan products that would be found in the restrooms.

The LA County Metropolitan Transit Authority, owners of Union Station, contracted ABM Engineering to maintain the building in 2012. The assistant chief engineer, you guessed it, Jesse Falconi, wanted all Sloan products from the day he was appointed to the facility.

Royal Flushometers were already in the train station when Jesse came on board. It was his decision to take everything “automatic”. Jesse installed Sloan faucets, which as you know, are all touchless and after installing the retrofits to the urinal flushometers, so are they now. They are a perfect complement to the ECOS® Dual Flush flushometers on the water closets.

Jesse has had an affinity for Sloan products since he was an apprentice, and rightly so. “They (Sloan) have trusted products and they stand by them. Competitors may offer a product that will save you a few dollars in the beginning, but they are really offering a cheaper and less durable product that will not stand the wear and tear that Sloan products do. Sloan products also offer environmental sustainability.”

Known as the “Last of the Great Railway Stations”, it is our honor to be associated with such an iconic building. And we are not the only ones who feel this way. Los Angeles Union Station was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Which, by association, now officially etches Sloan in the history books.

You can find additional case studies that highlight Sloan products at https://www.sloan.com/design/inspiration/case-studies.

Please email me at [email protected] with any projects that you have completed or are working on that would make for a nice case study.

Cloud for Sales

The 2017 outlook for U.S. nonresidential commercial construction is showing a strong 6.1% growth rate over 2016. That is obviously good news for your agencies but also means more demand on your time as it relates to keeping tabs on the projects in your territory. In order to help you keep tabs on those projects, Cloud for Sales provides you a digitized job board to help manage your projects. Below is a list of helpful tips your agency can leverage.

1. Using the “Tag Feature” allows an agency to assign a project to a sales person and provide that sales person with a list of projects.

2. Having your Cloud for Sales expert lead a portion of your meetings by providing the sales team with new leads and capturing updates on current leads and opportunities by updating in Cloud for Sales in real time.

3. Setting up filters on your leads and opportunities so you only see those that are active and viable, removing those that are cold and irrelevant.

4. If you are discussing a product on a specific project, it must be converted to an opportunity which helps drive your pipeline.

January and February of 2017 have started out strong as we continue to see the pipeline grow. Revenue through Cloud for Sales continues to rise as a percentage of Sloan total revenue. I want to recognize a couple different agencies for their efforts in building the pipeline:

Dillard, Tri Reps, Kliman, Lesemann – Keep up the good work and continue building the pipeline.
