Throughout its short but exciting history, Vytautas Magnus University has been faithfully nurturing and continuing its distinguished traditions. What sets this university apart is its willingness to organize studies, scientific research and life of the community in a different way. Intellectuals from Lithuania and abroad have participated in the re-establishment of VMU and defined its goals, which are being pursued to this day. Here, utmost importance is given to honesty, tolerance and dialogue, while the forerunning principles are liberal and democratic. Creativity, progress and development of national culture are all brought into sharp focus.

From the very first days of the university’s re-establishment in 1989, the experiences of Western universities have been an important influence. VMU was the first Lithuanian institution of higher education where Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degree studies were offered. Modern conception of studies, based on the model of Harvard University, is implemented here. VMU differs from other Lithuanian universities in the freedom it gives the students to choose and design their study schedule.

The VMU community – students, lecturers, graduates – is united by the idea of artes liberales, i.e. the classical university of liberal arts. Warm, honest interaction and liberal humanist spirit always follow and provide strength to the community.

The university is an exceptionally important institution to the state. For the members of the academic community, it serves as the hotbed for science, improvement and communication. It is not just an institution of higher learning; it is much more. It is the perfect embodiment of freedom and autonomy, which the humanity had first achieved a thousand years ago when the first university was opened and helped people learn to live as a community adhering to ideals of this kind.

Classical liberal arts universities are the labs of modern life, educating bold young people who are not afraid to experiment and are on their way to becoming professional contributors to their own country’s future. A classical university is not governed by pragmatic matters. Formulas do not apply here. This is the space for young people to develop critical thinking and become more open-minded. This is where the country’s future is built. Such is the Vytautas Magnus University of today.

Vytautas Magnus University keeps in step with the ever-changing world: renews itself, adapts to the demands and generates new ideas. The university encourages discovering other cultures and nurturing the public spirit. Special attention is paid to aspects more and more appreciated in the constantly changing planet – the maturation of ideas, expression of personality, communication, partnership. The inception of Vytautas Magnus University coincided with the birth of Lithuanian statehood. Having declared the country’s political independence on February 16th in 1918, the key figures of Lithuanian enlightenment considered it a high priority task to establish a Lithuanian university. Four years later, after the reorganization of the Program of Higher Education, the University of Lithuania was opened in Kaunas. It remained the only Lithuanian school of higher education during the interwar period. Soon it became a vitally important breeding ground for cultural, scientific and modern national ideas.

When the 500th anniversary of the death of Grand Duke Vytautas Magnus was commemorated in 1930, the University of Lithuania was renamed to honour his name and the occasion.

The university was unique during the interwar period due to its free spirit, eventful and exciting social life, a nurtured sense of community. Most of the famous contemporary intellectuals, highest ranking Lithuanian officials and government figures studied here. Vytautas Magnus University was also the place where the most famous scientific and cultural movements of the period were founded.

Since its first years, the university has been following a liberal policy on studies and paying exceptional attention to liberal arts and social sciences, acknowledging their role in uniting the nation and fostering its

historical memory. To this day, the values of VMU remain the same – modernity, partnership, liberal and communal thoughts.

The Soviet government closed down the university in 1950, but some of its faculties served as a foundation for other schools of higher education: Kaunas University of Technology, Kaunas University of Medicine, Lithuanian University of Agriculture and Lithuanian Veterinary Academy.

Thanks to emigrants, the academic tradition of VMU not only survived, but also kept developing for long years until restoration of independence. In 1989, the university was re-established thanks to the collective efforts of Lithuanian and emigrant scientists. At the time, it was the first autonomous school of higher education in the country.

The Statute of University legitimated the principle of academic freedom and the unity of science and studies. It introduced the principle of three level studies and used a modern studying model based on an American concept, which was completely unique at the time. The concept gives more preference to wide-spanning, general university education, as opposed to narrow and heavily specialized studies. This allows to focus more on universal, versatile education and the needs of modern society.

Since the establishment of the university in 1922, 64 distinguished people have been awarded the Honorary Doctor’s degrees. Honorary titles have been granted to the Presidents, Signatories of the Independence Act, poets and writers, scientists and other individuals who have greatly contributed to the history of Lithuania and the university. Since the opening of the university, 13 prominent persons have been awarded the title of Honorary Professor. Czesław Miłosz, world famous Lithuanian-born Polish poet and the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, was awarded the title of VMU Honorary Doctor in 1991. Commemorating his 100th birthday anniversary, Vytautas Magnus University has declared 2011 to be the Czesław Miłosz Year and prepared a series of celebratory events honouring the occasion and continuing all through the year.

Today VMU is the hotbed for social and political sciences, arts, theology, law and the humanities in Kaunas. The university rests on the foundations of collegial communication among students and teachers, dissemination of liberal ideas, general education (study system of liberal arts), multilingualism, encouragement of humanist values, modern outlook towards studies and international collaborations. VMU is an open, liberal and independent university, nurturing personalities capable of thinking and acting creatively and independently.

The university is set apart from other Lithuanian educational institutions by its unique study system, which offers a broad general education and awards the graduates with the Bachelor’s (BA) or Master’s (MA) degrees. The VMU alumni are able to think independently and creatively, they are active members of the public community, open to innovations and striving to learn and improve for their entire lives.

VMU is faithful to its liberal study policy, which allows the students themselves to design their study schedule and decide which subjects they want to study and when. Opportunities are available to switch from one study programme to another or to change the format of studies.

In 2011, VMU offers the university entrants to choose from 36 Bachelor’s and 58 Master’s degree study programmes (8 of them are available in English), as well as 16 postgraduate study programmes. Also accepted are applicants for integrated legal studies and doctoral studies of many scientific areas. Today the most-developed studies at VMU are the humanities and the social sciences. However, every year there is a growing attention to the programmes of the arts, physical and exact sciences, i.e., new media art, applied and business informatics, mathematics and its applications, energetic physics, environmental science and biology.

Studies at the university are organized by 10 faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Catholic Theology, the Faculty of Economics and Management, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Informatics, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Music Academy. Each of them offers not only various study programmes of three levels, but also great studying conditions and a diverse academic life, providing plenty of opportunities for creative self-expression and scientific activities.

The Faculty of Arts is a dynamic, youthful, creative and always inventive part of the university, where the unique Art History and Criticism and innovative studies of New Media Art and Interactive Web Design are offered. At the Departments of the Art History and Criticism and Theatre Studies, students make their way to becoming the Bachelors of Art History and Criticism, MA-level specialists of theatrology and performing art management, art historians and critics, curators, experts of creative industries, cultural heritage and tourism. The faculty also offers the doctoral degree programme of Art History and Criticism. Newly established Department of Modern Arts prepares the Bachelors of Media Arts and Design – practicians of the new media art and creators of interactive web design.

The VMU Faculty of Arts seeks to turn the student into a universally educated art critic who is well-versed in a couple of art forms as opposed to just one, i.e. it offers the integrated studies of arts. Interdisciplinary study programmes of New Media Art and Interactive Web Design provide students with skills for creating arts in many different modern media and in ICT (information and communication technologies) respectively.

Studies at the Faculty of Arts take place not only in lecture rooms but also in art laboratories, libraries, museums, theatre, cinema and concert halls, serving as the place for examination of art objects and creative practice. Lectures in the faculty are read by famous artists and experts of Lithuanian art.

The faculty has established international relations with many universities and institutes around the world. Lectures by renowned scientists, teachers and professors from Lithuania, Western Europe, the United States and other countries speak louder than words about the reputation of the faculty. Participants in the LLP/Erasmus programme spend a semester studying at universities in various European cities. Scientific researchers of the Faculty of Arts work in collaboration with higher education institutions of Paris, Gotland, Warsaw, Helsinki, Riga, Tartu, Minsk and Gardin.

A specialized arts reading room and a media art lab are functioning at the faculty. The reading room has accumulated many valuable and rare books and a lot of visual material (slides, CD, DVD, video records) on the specialized subjects of theory and history of various art forms. Also preserved here are periodical publications about art and the BA and MA theses written by the students of the Faculty of Arts.

Students and teachers of the faculty take part in numerous scientific and research projects funded by the EU. In the recent years, students have been collecting the “Miracles of Kaunas” (by recording the most unusual, unexpected and unnoticed yet unique places in the city) and analyzing how the cultural politics are realized via the dissemination of education and culture in the society. They have also investigated the cultural needs of the Kaunas’ cultural community, analyzed what art projects are relevant to the city residents, academic youth, special needs groups and children, presented the experimental project on the creative potential of Kaunas, “Freedom to a creative city”.

Launched by the students, the Arts Centre is functioning at the Faculty of Arts and organizing events, presenting exhibitions and original art projects. Some of the participants in the Arts Centre’s activities are future exhibition and gallery curators – they may implement their projects at the VMU art gallery “101”.

The Faculty of Catholic Theology is the only Lithuanian faculty approved by the Apostolic Congregation for Catholic Education in Vatican and awarding not just civil but ecclesiastical degrees. The studies here are attractive not only to future priests but to seculars as well. The faculty welcomes students who hold Christian values or plan on working in the church or public organizations, solving socially relevant issues of morality, spirituality, ethics, responding to fundamental needs of a person, family and society.

The faculty accepts admissions to BA study programmes of Catholic Theology and Pedagogy of Religion. Students here can also pursue a Licentiate in Theology (study programme of Pastoral Theology) and a degree of Master of Religious Studies (study programme of Religious Education). For one semester, the students of the faculty can improve their knowledge at universities in countries of the EU and do LLP/Erasmus internship at an organization of their choice abroad.

First level students at the VMU Faculty of Catholic Theology are learning knowledge of philosophy and theology, getting to know Christian worldview, basics in psychology and educology. Master’s degree programmes of Family Research, Pastoral Theology and Religious Education allow to expand the students’ knowledge on the law of the Catholic Church, Christian anthropology and pastoralization in the Bible, psychology of marriage, harmonious collaboration between family and schools in the processes of education, factors influencing expression of sexuality, the role of educators in the prevention of addiction,

innovations in the science and practice of religion studies, adult education, etc.

The Faculty of Catholic Theology provides the necessary conditions for the students to become well-educated and mature personalities. Exceptional attention is given to the community life and the soul leading of the students. Groups are assembled for prayer and discussions, students organize events ranging from talent shows to weekends of recollections and seminars. Students also work as volunteers with the radio station “Marijos radijas”, the Vilnius Archdiocese Youth Center, the Kaunas Catholic Evangelization Center and other Catholic organizations. Various conferences, courses (“Alfa”, “Know Yourself ”) and seminars are an excellent setting for the students to discuss religion and life, look for ample solutions to relevant problems.

The faculty encourages research activities of its students. Scientific association “Signum” invites the students to engage in research activities, participate in conferences and discussions. The members of the association invite researchers from other faculties and universities to read lectures and reveal the latest discoveries of various scientific fields. The VMU Faculty of Economics and Management is one of the best internationally acclaimed schools of economics and management in Lithuania. In 2007, the international network of higher education schools “EDUNIVERSAL” has evaluated 7000 universities around the world and selected 1000 of them as organizing the best studies of business administration and management. This list included the Faculty of Economics and Management at Vytautas Magnus University.

The faculty offers studies at three levels – Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral – while the study programmes pull in the brightest Lithuanian high school graduates. Also functioning at the faculty is the Business Consulting and Continuous Education Centre, which also accepts admissions to various learning programmes, ranging from short specialized courses to Master’s degree studies of management and administration.

Well-qualified faculty teachers contribute to the evolving responsibility, diligence, self-reliance and communicability of the future graduates. Student internship is given high priority at the faculty. Successful careers of the alumni at various Lithuanian business organizations, local branches of foreign companies and governmental institutions serve as a testament to the fact that the studies offer enough universal and specialized knowledge to help the students successfully integrate into the competitive world of business.

The students of the Faculty of Economics and Management were the first at the university to participate in Campus Europae, the academic exchange programme of European universities. Students travelling to study at a foreign university spend one semester studying not only the specialized subjects but also the language of the country they are visiting; on the second semester, they attend lectures that are read in foreign language. VMU is the only Lithuanian university participating in the programme.

Students also take part in the LLP / Erasmus exchange programme, allowing them to spend half a year acquiring knowledge at universities of Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Greece, France, Italy, Norway and other countries.

The system of study organization at the faculty is coordinated together with scientific research of economics and management. At annually held international conferences, the faculty teachers and Master’s and doctoral degree students analyze the processes of business development and discuss the latest tendencies of Lithuanian economics, finance system and organization management. Scientific articles are published in periodical journals of the faculty, “Management of Organizations: Systematic Research” and “Applied Economics: Systematic Research”.

Successful integration of theory and practice, studies, research and consulting activities helps the faculty remain one of the leading Lithuanian schools of economics and management.

The humanities at Vytautas Magnus University are especially important sciences, because, aside from high quality education, they also provide the student with the ability to explore and understand the world around us, use independent and critical thinking and become an original and creative personality. Thus, studying the humanities is worthwhile and meaningful.

The faculty offers studies of the humanities: history, ethnology, philosophy and Lithuanian, English, German and French philology. These programmes can be selected as the main (Bachelor’s degree) specialty or studied at Master’s or doctoral level. Every semester, various study subjects are taught by guest lecturers from all around the world.

BA level graduates may choose to pursue Master’s degree at a different faculty or university. Those who decide not to continue studying find a job at various institutions and organizations: publishing houses, editorial offices, archives, museums, scientific institutions, schools, governmental offices, public sector and institutions of international relations, companies of tourism and business. Graduates quickly get to know the specifics of the work, as they have acquired what is the most important – not the rapidly aging knowledge of a particular specialty, but a wide-ranging education of liberal arts. The driving force of the faculty’s scientific research is behind the centres of Computer Linguistics, Lithuanian Diaspora Studies, Culture Research, Prof. Bronius Vaškelis’ Literary Comparativistics, Kaunas’ History and Intercultural Communication

and Multilingualism. Work of various kinds is carried out at the Computer Linguistics Centre, such as creation of the online information translation tool, digitalization of verbal and written language, grammatical and semantic analysis of the Lithuanian language, research of spoken language, automatic transcription of music. The Centre for the Lithuanian Diaspora Studies researches the cultural, political and scientific heritage of the Lithuanian Diaspora, in addition to collecting and preserving unique archives of the Diaspora. Scientists working at the centre investigate the history, culture and literature of Lithuanian exile, analyze the processes of modern migration.

At the Culture Research Centre, the phenomena of modern Lithuanian urban culture are investigated, as well as the specifics and activities of various subculture communities and the virtual culture formed by the computer technologies. The Centre of Kaunas’ History researches many different aspects of the city and region of Kaunas, history of the war and the university. This centre is also frequently holding international and national scientific conferences, implementing research programmes and projects, organizing expeditions and collecting a historical bibliography of the research areas in the centre. The scientists in the Centre of Prof. Bronius Vaškelis’ Literary Comparativistics are occupied with the research comparing creations by artists of different nationalities, looking for relations between different areas of art, tracing the influence of environment on the texts and their authors.

Studies at the VMU Faculty of Informatics are not limited to the acquiring of traditional knowledge of informatics and mathematics, thus they attract not just those interested in computers, formulas, calculations and algorithms or programming. The faculty is oriented towards universal educating, as the studies include the knowledge related not only to the particular specialty, but also to other sciences which share common ties with informatics. The students expand their horizons and become educated personalities, able to creatively apply modern instruments of informatics and mathematics in professional practices of various areas.

The faculty offers BA and MA degree study programmes, adapted to the needs of modern society. In addition to gaining the most important knowledge of informatics and mathematics, the students also learn to apply it while modelling business management decisions, designing services to the users of modern networks, creating virtual reality and virtual communities, analyzing language texts and sounds of music, composing images or imitating thought processes.

Alumni of the faculty, now working as programmers, system administrators, researchers, analysts, project managers, company CEOs and at other positions, claim that the main advantage of studies at the VMU Faculty of Informatics is the wide span

of knowledge offered, which transcends the limits of the specialty. According to Director of Alna Software Artūras Gruodis, “university education forms the theoretical framework and develops the learning skills, which later have to be improved independently. It is good that the priority at Vytautas Magnus University is given not to highly specialized studies but to wide and universal preparation of a specialist”.

Students of the Faculty of Informatics are provided excellent studying conditions: modern computer labs are available, a library, research labs and centres are functioning here. An opportunity to improve the skills acquired at the university is provided by the LLP/Erasmus student exchange programme, giving a chance to study at universities in European countries for one or two semesters.

Together with faculty teachers and researchers, the students are able to participate in scientific and utilitarian projects, supported by national and EU funds. Research results are used to implement information society development projects, which are considered very high priority by the European Union. The range of research activities is wide enough for the students to choose one according to their own interests.

Modern equipment is used to carry out the works at the laboratories of Computer Controlled Systems, Internet and Mobile Solutions and Multimedia, as well as the centres

of Computer Linguistics, Energetic Security Research and other labs or centres. The faculty regularly organizes seminars of presentations by students, lecturers, alumni, doctoral students and guest lecturers or business representatives.

One of the aims here is to link the theoretical knowledge to relevant examples of its application; therefore, the faculty maintains close ties with scientific research institutes and advanced companies of information technology, telecommunications and other areas. The graduates of the faculty have brought themselves together into a club of the faculty’s Alumni, actively communicating with the university community and introducing the perspectives for work in their companies, sharing experience, inviting students to come on internship.

For the future university students, the faculty organizes open days. It also invites students of high schools and gymnasiums to the annual quiz event “IFtorina”. The participants of the quiz can test their knowledge of informatics and mathematics before applying for studies at the university, try their luck at a creative contest of homework and get to know the life of a university student. High school students are also invited to events organized by VMU and the ITMC Computing Academy and the summer camp for high school students at the Faculty of Informatics.

Continuation of TraditionsLegal studies at Vytautas Magnus University are following a long tradition. During the interwar period (1922 – 1940), legal studies at the university were supervised by a famous lawyer and scientist, prof. Petras Leonas. Renowned contemporary professors, such as Vaclovas Biržiška, Mykolas Römeris and Antanas Krikščiukaitis, read lectures at VMU. During the Soviet era, lectures for future lawyers were not available in Kaunas. After the restoration of independence of Lithuania and the re-establishment of Vytautas Magnus University, legal studies were brought back as well and have been offered since 1995.

Modern and Integrated Study ModelLegal studies at VMU were restored and prepared according to the model of Western universities. The choice was decided by the demand for highly qualified lawyers, who would possess wide liberal education, fluency in legal English and ability to work in both Lithuania and abroad. Currently, the faculty provides integrated studies of law, which encompass the Bachelor’s and Master’s level studies. For the graduates, the degree of the Master of Law and the professional qualification of a lawyer are awarded.

Michigan State University Certificate in Transnational LawStudents of the Faculty of Law have the opportunity to get the Michigan State University Certificate in Transnational Law, in addition to their VMU Master’s degree diploma. The certificate testifies that the

faculty’s alumnus has passed the main courses of international law and has a good command of legal English. VMU is the first university in Lithuania and one of the few in Europe to have signed an agreement of such kind with one of the most prestigious universities in the USA.Modern Teaching Methods and the Best Preparation of LawyersThe Faculty of Law is exceptional due to its unique teaching methods, promoting the Socratic Method during the lectures. Rather than having the teacher speak and the students take notes, an unconventional approach, practiced in the most prestigious American universities, is taken. During discussions and practical activities, the students analyze specific cases where legal regulations are applied and solve exercises of collision law by applying Q & A form. Lectures proceed in the same manner in the USA and the most advanced European law schools. Most legal experts and scientists acknowledge that this method is the best way to prepare students for the profession of a lawyer. Another aspect contributing to the warm and collegial atmosphere surrounding teachers and students is the fact that the collective of the Faculty of Law is comprised of young and promising lecturers, who respect the courage, creativity and initiative of the students.

Lithuanian Law on a Professional and Practical LevelWell qualified scientists and specialists of their fields (civil, criminal, administrative law and other legal areas) are teaching at the faculty, ensuring that the necessary knowledge and skills needed for professionally practicing lawyers in

Lithuania are imparted upon the students. Since many of the teachers are practicing lawyers, the students are acquainted not only with all essential elements of the law in Lithuania, but also with the issues that the lawyers face when applying the law in practical situations, which are frequently looked at during the lectures.

Highly Qualified Scientists Keeping in Step with Modern TimesConsidering it one of their top priorities, scientists at the faculty pay due attention to the influence of globalization on legal issues. The study material is kept fresh and relevant thanks to innovative scientific research, which is carried out to tackle the hot-button issue of globalization and the problems it brings to the law. Research results are presented at special conferences organized by the faculty and the English-language scientific journal “Baltic Journal of Law & Politics”, published by the Faculty of Law in collaboration with the Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy.

Kaunas boasts deep-rooted traditions of training professional musicians, continuing since at least the beginning of the 20th century. Artists that were groomed in a Kaunas’ music school of higher education during the interwar period contributed vastly to the culture of both the provisional capital and the country. Suspended during the Soviet years, the training of musicians with highest qualification resumed in Kaunas in 1989.

VMU Music Academy is a constantly changing, dynamic part of the university, where the best traditions of music education (great attention to the mastering of the performing arts, the lecturers’ sharing their professional experience directly and teaching a particular specialty in a consistent manner) are balanced with broad general university education (studies of the languages, the humanities and social sciences), helping to educate an individual who is intellectual, creative and able to easily adapt to the job market.

The Music Academy is keeping and constantly strengthening close ties with social partners, heads and employees of various cultural and educational institutions (theatres, music collectives, philharmonics, music schools and gymnasiums). These ties help to create conditions for the future professionals to acquire practical experience in concerts and pedagogy while they are still studying, and successfully fill a job position in the same field after they have graduated. Close contact between the lecturers and the students during the studies often evolves into further creative collaborations.

As the attention to biology, biochemistry, environmental protection, ecology, alternative energy sources, climate change and other issues keeps growing worldwide, the popularity of study programmes at the Faculty of Natural Sciences has also grown substantially in the recent years. Currently, the faculty offers Bachelor’s degree study programmes of Biochemistry, Biology, Energetic Physics, Environmental Sciences and Ecology.

The first-level studies prepare graduates who acquire knowledge not only in the specific study field of their choice, but also the basics of physics and biomedicine concerning origins and evolution of the universe, the genetic basics of life, the interplay between people and natural environment, the effect of various technologies on the development of society, trends of harmonious development, etc. In addition to this, the students also attend general education subjects of the humanities, social sciences, informatics and foreign languages.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences boasts modern and constantly renewed studying facilities which have been kept up-to-date by

courtesy of the EU structural funds for the last couple of years. Students can undertake research not only in the modern labs at VMU, but in the research centers of other Lithuanian scientific and educational institutions as well. Postgraduate and doctoral students may contribute to the research projects carried out by the professors of their department.

The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree study programmes are frequently updated according to the experiences and research innovations of universities in Western Europe and the United States. All of the study programmes at the faculty have received high praise from foreign experts and satisfy the requirements of modern study programmes at European universities.

The students and the researchers of the faculty work hand in hand as collaborators of scientific association “Modusas”. The Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy at VMU offers attractive and interesting studies, an opportunity to improve at other European universities, an open, collegial and multicultural environment, mutual respect between the teachers and the students, evenings of non-commercial cinema and quality music, heated discussions and great potential for the future. All of this provides the students with excellent opportunities to become not just experts of their own field, but also tolerant members of the community who are capable of critical thinking. The students here are offered a flexible study system and a choice of subjects according to their own needs and hobbies.

The Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy has started functioning as a separate division of the university in 2000, when it separated from the former Institute of International Relations and Political Sciences. The community of the faculty students is as diverse as any – it consists of future political scientists, diplomats, journalists, specialists of public administration, integrated communication, regional politics and economics.

The Faculty is closely collaborating with the best universities in Europe and around the world. Every year, the exchange programme LLP/Erasmus and bilateral agreements allow the students and teachers to visit universities in the United Kingdom, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Italy, Sweden, Norway, the USA, South Korea, Taiwan and other countries. The students gain a wealth

of theoretical and practical knowledge, get to know foreign cultures and customs.

The study programmes here pull in the brightest graduates and involve not just political, diplomatic sciences, regional and international politics, but public administration and communication studies as well – students are provided with the necessary skills for future work as media and PR specialists, public sector workers, employees at diplomatic structures, EU-related institutions in Lithuania and abroad, communications companies, etc.

Faculty students publish articles in an online journal of independent thought Sparnai (www.sparnai.com), which aims to bring together a community of active young people, create an open environment for positive creative expression, initiate various campaigns or events, encourage the academic community and the public to develop an interest in culture and politics.

Since the founding of the faculty, it has been the home for the Academic Club of Political Scientists, which organizes meetings and discussions with famous politicians, scientists and public figures. Annually held Republican Student Olympics of Political Science allows its winners to have a talk with the President of the Republic of Lithuania and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. A team of faculty volunteers has been active for several years, successfully contributing to organizing and performing various activities in the faculty, such as organization of discussions, scientific conferences and faculty festivities.

The faculty has been working hard in order to ensure that the community spends time in a fun and meaningful way, while the atmosphere stays lively and collegial. Annual international scientific conferences attract the students of the faculty and other Lithuanian or foreign institutions of higher education. Scientific research carried out by the students is published in faculty journals “Political Science Almanac” and “Media Transformations”.

Liberal structure of the university and the faculty, collaborations between the departments and centres are an essential part of the organization of studies, seminars, conferences and interdisciplinary scientific and applied research projects. The Faculty of Political Science and Diplomacy is also involved in the implementation of The Interdisciplinary Master’s in East European Research and Studies (MIREES), a study programme launched in cooperation with four other European universities.

The lectures at the faculty are taught by diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, heads of Lithuanian representations abroad, members of the European Parliament, members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, specialists from various ministries, journalists, public organizations’ leaders, experts and foreign scientists. The students have a chance to do internship in the Office of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, the Offices of the Seimas and the Government and other governmental institutions.

The driving forces behind the Faculty of Social Sciences can be found in its quality of studies, international relations, research projects and their results, which determine the direction of the studies. Utmost attention is given to the honing of the students’ professional skills, values and abilities, balancing theoretical studies and practical activities. Collegial academic communication between the students and the teachers is a crucial part of the faculty’s culture. Discussions and debates, critical thinking and reflections form the basis for academic community of the faculty.

Currently, the faculty is involved in 60 study and research projects financed by numerous institutions of Lithuania and the European Union.

The VMU Institute of Social Welfare at the Faculty of Social Sciences is an internationally recognized competence centre in social welfare, giving uttermost attention to social justice, public solidarity and human rights, all while strengthening social linkage under the conditions of multiculturalism. Institute prepares highly qualified professionals able to build social linkage, expand scientific research of social welfare and participate in the formation of social politics.

The studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences uphold the principles of liberal arts, and thus teach the students not just the knowledge necessary for developing professional competence, but also inform their universal and humanist world views, encourage critical

thinking, create a culture of tolerance, promote participation in various academic activities. A lot of attention at the faculty is given to the improvement of the students’ universal practical and professional skills. Active collaborations with governmental institutions, companies and communities let the students expand their competences while reflecting and balancing theoretical and practical knowledge, familiarizing themselves with the working environment, establishing relations with potential employers.

The opinion poll of social partners – employers and the alumni – has disclosed that the Alumni of VMU social work studies have strong common competences, theoretical knowledge and practical abilities, which ensures their competitive advantage in the job market. According to the partners, the internationalism, professional motivation and qualitative orientation are what makes these alumni stand out.

The studies are complemented by interesting academic life. The students are encouraged to express themselves and show initiative in student organizations and various events, contribute to the management of the faculty, academic discussions and decision making. Time has shown that the students at the Institute of Social Welfare are very actively participating in scientific and civic activities.

Periodically published journals on social sciences bear testament to the quality of studies and research here. International scientific databases include the faculty’s journals, such as “The

The students of the faculty can choose from 5 BA, 10 MA, 1 non-degree and 3 doctoral study programmes. Students may expand their horizons and competences, acquire skills in academic and professional activities, participate in projects, conferences, seminars, club activities or volunteering. The VMU Psychology Student Association and the social work students’ club “Vesta” are also functioning at the faculty.

Faculty students have many opportunities to gather international experience. They can participate in research and study projects or exchange programmes LLP/Erasmus and Campus Europae, which offer partial studies and internships in universities of Europe, the USA, South Korea, Japan, etc. Faculty lecturers have spent many years perfecting their skills while reading lectures at the universities of the United States, Canada and Europe, while intensive lecture courses are often read by guests from various foreign universities.

The programme offers an in-depth look at political and economic processes in East Asian countries. The students will also become competent at analyzing political processes of different countries in the regional context.

East Asia Region Studies graduates have no trouble finding work at various state, non-governmental and private companies and organizations, educational or public institutions of the Republic of Lithuania and the European Union, diplomatic missions of East Asian countries in Lithuania, etc. Continuation of studies is possible in the form of post-graduate programme in the field of Social Sciences. This programme, which is both professional and research oriented, provides an excellent theoretical basis for questioning how political, economic, technological and cultural issues are involved in the democratic performance of the media. The graduates will have gained insight into theoretical as well as practical issues which contemporary journalism meets in the changing society. They will master a wide range of media tools and gain valuable experience addressing everyday questions with a professional touch.

Highly qualified marketing specialists are educated here; the degree programme of Marketing and Sales helps the students form a systematic point of view towards business management in the permanently changing conditions and manage difficult marketing subjects and processes in international markets.

Theoretical and practical activities are used to develop professional thinking. Proficiency in activity is trained with practical sessions, individual tasks and research projects. The main elements of proficiency are consolidated through the preparation and defence of the Master’s thesis.

The first two stages of the programme are taken up by the studying of 8 specialized subjects and preparation of 2 research projects. The third and final stage is devoted to the writing of the Master’s thesis. Lecturers serve as thesis advisors, while the student may choose to work on the thesis at VMU or in his home country, communicating with the advisor by e-mail.

After completing the degree in marketing and sales, students will be able to work at the highest management positions in organizations of various types, marketing development or sales department. The aim of the Social Work second-cycle programme is to prepare a social worker who is able to perform research of social phenomena and social work, develop professional knowledge, skills, values, enhance the solution of human interaction and personal relation with environment problems, initiate social changes and innovations in pursuit of personal and social welfare, strengthening civic society and developing professional competences.

Students who complete this programme gain competences that enable them to develop as well as produce social work related research and knowledge. They are able to analyse the mission and objectives of contemporary social work in the light of local and global context of human rights and justice promotion. Interrelations between social policy, social structures and resources and design social projects pose no problems for the graduates as a subject of analysis. Likewise, they will find it not difficult to critically study interactions between social worker and client and perform interventions in complex situations. The students will also learn to apply intervention methods of social work, putting the client’s participation in the transformation to the forefront. In more than two decades, the scientists of Vytautas Magnus University have accumulated solid experience in international scientific research and project management. They hold memberships of national and international professional associations of diverse scientific areas and fields. Publications in the scientific press of Lithuania and foreign countries are frequently announced.

For participation in scientific research and experimental development, as well as achievements and merits, a few dozens of VMU scientists have been honoured with important prizes and awards, including the National Science Award and the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Award.

Vytautas Magnus University devotes special attention to international activities. It has joined some of the most prestigious European academic networks uniting the best universities – VMU is a full member of the European University Association (EUA), a member of the European Association for International Education (EAIE), the Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN) and the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS). VMU has 161 LLP/Erasmus partners and bilateral collaborative agreements with 75 universities in Europe, Asia, South and North America.

Today VMU is collaborating with many universities and scientists around the world, carrying out projects, student and worker exchange, constantly improving the system of studying and research. Every year, almost a hundred students and several dozens of teachers from various universities around the world join the VMU community, in accordance to international agreements. Meanwhile, VMU students spend a semester or full academic year at a university in Europe, the USA, South Korea, Japan or another country. VMU is the only university in Lithuania which has joined the Campus Europae programme, uniting 19 European universities.

Since 1999, VMU began participating in the inter-university student and teacher exchange programme LLP/Erasmus, which allows VMU students travel to study abroad while, in turn, the university accepts large flows of international students, who come here from all over the world.

Also functioning at the university is the International Office, which manages relations with various Lithuanian and foreign institutions, presents study programmes, spreads information about studies, scholarships, internships, international science programmes, projects, etc. The office also provides help and consultations to the incoming foreign students and lecturers, regarding the questions of studies, life in Lithuania (migration) and integration into the academic community of the university.

VMU uses many ways to strengthen its international relations. Collaborations are determined by bilateral agreements, ties with other countries are established by joining and participating in international organizations and networks. Various international projects and programmes, such as LLP/Erasmus and Campus Europae, allow the university to expand its scope internationally.

Every year, Vytautas Magnus University also provides everyone with an excellent opportunity to take part in various international summer schools. Most of them follow in the footsteps of the Lithuanian Language and Culture Summer Courses at VMU, which foster the oldest traditions of all summer courses here and are the most valued by foreign students and Lithuanians living abroad. In four weeks, the participants improve Lithuanian language skills, get to know Lithuanian lifestyle, visit historical landmarks, have fun on spare time.

The university project Lithuanian Diaspora Academy, which fosters academic cooperation between Lithuanians living abroad and in their homeland, holds annual summer school project Refresh in Lithuania. The project seeks to bring together Lithuanians and their descendants currently living in foreign countries, thus renewing and strengthening relationships with their motherland. It is actively engaged in the task of helping the emigrants understand the current affairs and issues in Lithuania. The courses invite people of Lithuanian heritage (age 18 and older) to attend interesting lectures, visit museums and get to know the everyday life of a Lithuanian student. Trips are organized to the most beautiful places in Lithuania – Rumšiškės, Vilnius, Trakai, Klaipėda, etc.

weLCOMe tO Kaunas Kaunas – the City OF LiberaL arts

The distinctive architectural and urban character of the city is undoubtedly the result of its unique situation: exceptionally picturesque frame of nature and strategically comfortable geographic location. Kaunas is a city of waterways, currently positioned at the crossing of two significant international transport routes and looking to get back the lost status of the city by the water. The river valleys, slopes and hills keep Kaunas closely bonded with nature and reveal the distinctive silhouettes of urban landscape and panoramic vistas.

Kaunas and its architecture are undoubtedly unique in the context of place and region. First and foremost, the city is centuries old, its historical roots being much deeper than many other European cities. The Kaunas Old Town reflects the history of a medieval city. This Gothic city is adorned by buildings of Northern Renaissance, while its suburbs are a magnificent heritage of Baroque architecture. However, it is not just the old architecture that distinguishes Kaunas from other cities.

Kaunas is the only city in Lithuania boasting such a rich and unique heritage of the modern interwar architecture. Unlike most European cities, Kaunas has a concentrated exposition of the 1920s-1930s Bauhaus architecture.

Kaunas is an interesting modern city enjoying fame for its intellectual atmosphere, friendly people, historical and architectural heritage of the interwar period, rich cultural life and traditions of different cultures. Thousands of young people come to study, live and work in Kaunas every year.

Foreigners and Lithuanians, guests and tourists are attracted to the city by its world famous festivals of music, dance and visual arts, unconventional projects, museum collections, art galleries and impressive architecture of varying styles and eras.

Most countries have at least one cosy city which has flourished after giving birth to a university. To this day, these cities remain a strong attraction because of their exceptionally creative and youthful academic atmosphere, exuding an aura of intellectuality. In the United Kingdom, such a rare gem of academic spirit is none other but Oxford; likewise, Italy has Bologna, Poland has Kraków and Estonia has Tartu. Having served as the provisional capital during one of the most important periods of our country‘s history, Kaunas may also be dubbed the most academic city of Lithuania.

VMU art spaces are cultural hot spots of the city, where various cultural, educational and social activities are carried out: public lectures, discussions, film screenings, music events, exhibitions. VMU scientists and students are actively involved in the cultural and social life of Kaunas, nurturing the humanist culture of the city, collaborating with social partners in the city and the region. Most of the university’s buildings are situated near the city centre, therefore, academic activities of VMU and the celebrations of the community have become an inseparable part of Kaunas’ daily life. The researchers and students at VMU initiate various campaigns and projects, which contribute to the formation of the city’s image and make its name famous both nationally and internationally.

Today the cultural life in Kaunas remains alive, diverse and attractive. Without Kaunas, it would be hard to understand both the history and the current affairs of Lithuanian culture.

It is said that to get to know the culture of Kaunas a little better, to familiarize yourself with the collections of its museums and art galleries, the architecture, monuments, parks and the defensive ring of forts, you would need about a week. Nevertheless, for a starter tour of Kaunas, it would be enough to see just the most important cultural landmarks in the city.

Kaunas Castle Built in the late 13th century, it is the oldest brick castle in Lithuania and the first one in Kaunas. Kaunas Castle played a significant role in the defence system of the city, suppressing the attacks of the Crusaders and their further movement into Lithuania, including the capital Vilnius. In 1362, after a long siege, the Crusaders destroyed the castle; however, it was later rebuilt and fortified. Kaunas Castle lost its strategic significance after the Battle of Žalgiris (Grunwald).

Town Hall {Rotušės a.}Often called the White Swan of the city, the Kaunas Town Hall combines elements of Gothic, Baroque and early Classicism styles. In the Middle Ages, the Town Hall was the centre of the city: its square served as the marketplace and the location of various festivities and executions of criminals. After the re-construction of the building in 1973, the Town Hall was turned into the Wedding Palace, while the Museum of Ceramic Art settled in its basement.

St. Francis Xavier Church and Jesuit Monastery {Rotušės a. 7, 8, 9} This late Baroque style church was constructed in the early 17th century. In 1787, it was transferred to the Order of Franciscan Monks, later it served as an Orthodox Church, Alexander Nevsky’s Cathedral and a Technical College. In 1990, the Jesuit Community regained the church.

Laisvės alėja {Laisvės al.}It is a 1.7 km long pedestrian-only street, connecting the old and the new parts of the city. Its beginning and end precisely indicate the directions of the East and the West.

Monument to Vytautas the Great {at the turn of Laisvės al. and L. Sapiegos g.}This monument was unveiled in 1932 in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania. Created by sculptor Vincas Grybas, it first stood in Panemunė, but was destroyed in the Soviet years. After the restoration of independence, it was rebuilt at the junction of Laisvės alėja and Sapiegos street.

St. Michael the Archangel Church {Nepriklausomybės a. 14}This is a neo-Byzantine style building with architectural traits of the Orthodox sanctuary. The church was designed and constructed by Russian architects and built for the Kaunas military garrison. Later it functioned as an art gallery, until it was turned into a Catholic church.

Garden of Military Museum {Vienybės a.}Monumental busts of famous Lithuanian writers and politicians were unveiled here. The Eternal flame and wooden crosses commemorate those who lost their lives for the independence of Lithuania.

Kaunas Cathedral {Vilniaus g. 26}It is the only Gothic style church in Lithuania, using Basilica design. Reconstructed a number of times, the church has acquired architectural features of the Renaissance and Baroque. The Cathedral has 9 altars and crystal-type arches in the sacristy.

Vilniaus Street It is the most beautiful and the busiest street in the Old Town, intended only for pedestrians. Long time ago it used to be the main road leading to the Kaunas Town Hall. The majority of its buildings have survived since the 16th century and many of them have been reconstructed.

Vytautas' the Great Church {Aleksoto g. 6} This church was built in the 15th century, which makes it the oldest one in Kaunas. It is one of the first Gothic brick buildings of cross-shaped layout in Kaunas. The building belonged to Franciscan monks and was used as a warehouse of weapons during the Napoleonic Wars.

The House of Thunder {Aleksoto g. 6}One of the most original buildings of the flaming Gothic architecture, The House of Thunder was constructed in the 15th century for Hanza merchants. In the 19th century, a statue of Thunder was found in one of the walls, which is why it was designated a pagan temple. The first Kaunas Drama theatre was established in the house in 1844. Now the House of Thunder belongs to the Jesuit High School.

Kaunas Funiculars {Skriaudžių g. 8 ir Aušros g. 6}Kaunas is the only city in Lithuania which has funiculars, one of the oldest means of transport. The funiculars in Žaliakalnis and Aleksotas are used for two purposes – transportation and pleasure trips. The funicular in Aleksotas, which is set to be repaired and should start working again in the summer of 2011, links the old part of the city with the slopes of Aleksotas which offer a beautiful view of the city. The funicular of Žaliakalnis goes up from downtown to the monumental Christ’s Resurrection Church, the roof of which also provides a spectacular panorama of the city.

Statue of Liberty {Vienybės a.}This sculpture is the symbol of Lithuanian Statehood. It was inaugurated in 1928, destroyed during the Stalinist regime and restored in 1989.

Kaunas Zoo {Radvilėnų g. 21}This is the only zoological garden in Lithuania. It is set up in the old oak grove and has around 270 species of animals and birds.

Pažaislis Monastery {T. Masiulio g. 31}One of the most beautiful architectural ensembles of the Baroque style in Lithuania, the Pažaislis Monastery was built in the 17th century as a Camaldoli Abbey under the supervision of Italian masters from Florence. Kauno Marios Regional Park {Miškininkų g. 2, Vaišvydava, Kaunas District}Artificially made Kauno Marios (Kaunas Lagoon), covering a total area of 63,5 km², was created in 1959. The open-air Folk Museum, Pažaislis Monastery and Kaunas Yacht Club are located nearby.

A. Mickevičius Valley

The stone where poet Adomas Mickevičius loved to sit and create poems lies in the valley that surrounds the Girstupis rivulet.

Kaunas State Drama Theatre {Laisvės al. 71} The long history of this teatre began in 1920. It was the first professional state theatre in Lithuania. Whether in the Soviet era or during the years of independence, the theatre has always welcomed the greatest creators of Lithuanian theatre – Andrius Oleka-Žilinskas, Mstislavas Dobužinskis, Michailas Čechovas, Henrikas Vancevičius, Jonas Jurašas, Jonas Vaitkus, Gytis Padegimas, Gintaras Varnas, Vidmantas Bartulis and others. Almost every year since 1996, annual awards to the best Lithuanian theatre artists have been given to those working with the Kaunas State Drama Theatre. More information: www.dramosteatras.lt.

Kaunas State Musical Theatre {Laisvės al. 92}Established in 1940, this theatre is faithful to its longtime tradition of showing plays encompassing all genres of the musical theatre stage – operas, operet-tas, musicals, ballets, dance plays, plays for children. New creations by renowned Lithuanian theatre conductors, directors and painters are born here. The theatre is also intensely collaborating with foreign artists. Some of the best Lithuanian opera soloists sing during the shows in the repertoire of the theatre. Kaunas Chamber Theatre {Kęstučio g. 74a}It is a municipal stock drama theatre, which has acquired the status of a professional theatre in 1986. Every year, Kaunas Chamber Theatre prepares 3 premieres (one of them is always a play for children). The shows are different in genres and form. They in-clude theatre plays-games “Blaise“ and “Hot Choco-late”, G. Tabori’s post-modern “Peepshow”, Ionesco’s absurdist dramas, Pushkin’s masterpiece “The Queen of Spades”, psychological play “Antigone in New York”, phantasmagoric “Virgin Marriage”. Kaunas Little Theatre {M.Daukšos g. 34}Located in a mysterious place in the Old Town, emitting aroma of cosiness and charming peculiarities, Kaunas Little Theatre was established in 1992 as an extravagant response to academic stability. The repertoire is dominated by productions of works created by modern authors in various genres – anything from tragicomic dramas to intriguing, unusual plays. Kaunas State Puppet Theatre {Laisvės al. 87a.}While almost the entire repertoire of the theatre is dedicated to children, some events for the older public are also organized. A special literature room “The Youngest Son” is functioning at the Little Hall since 2001, attracting senior high school pupils, teachers and university students. Kaunas Dance Theatre “Aura” {M. Daukšos g. 30a.}Perhaps the most spot-on description of this theatre was offered by conductor Birutė Letukaitė, who addressed all lovers of dance: “Let’s knock down banality and cheap popularity, ephemeral fluff and overplayed music, constrained notions and timeworn ideas, and even our own laziness! We can, we want, we are different!”. “Aura” is the oldest and the most experienced modern dance collective in Lithuania, recognized and awarded in various international contests of modern dance. Since 1989, the first festival of modern dance in Kaunas is organized annually by initiative of Birutė Letukaitė. More information: www.aura.lt.

Kaunas Pantomime Theatre {M.Daukšos g. 34}It is the only professional pantomime theatre in Lithuania. It has begun its creative activities in Kaunas in 1967. The routine repertoire of the theatre is composed of over 20 plays in various genres. Actors here perform roles not just in classical, serious and philosophical productions based on world famous writers’ or playwrights’ works, but in comedies and lightweight, entertaining plays and programmes as well. Mykolas Žilinskas Art Gallery {Nepriklausomybės a. 12}Named in memory of famous collector Mykolas Žilinskas (1904 – 1992), who has vastly contributed to the enrichment of Lithuanian art collections. Exhibited here are the most valuable foreign art collections of the M. K. Čiurlionis’ museum: fine arts of Ancient Egypt, applied arts in Europe from 17th to 20th century, Italian paintings in 17th and 18th century, painting in Western Europe during the second half of 19th century and the entire 20th century, painting and sculpture of Baltic countries in the first half of 20th century. Three halls of the gallery are intended for changing exhibitions by Lithuanian and foreign artists.

Kaunas Ceramics Museum {Rotušės a. 12}Visiting the impressive vaults of the Town Hall, one is introduced to the historical development of Lithuanian ceramics and porcelain. Approximately 30,000 of archaeological salvage and other findings, collected during excavations of Kaunas Old Town and its surroundings, are preserved here. The museum is also organizing exhibitions by modern masters of ceramics.

Juozas Zikaras Memorial Museum {J. Zikaro g. 3}The exposition here consists of the famous sculptor’s Juozas Zikaras’ (1881-1944) creative heritage, which includes the well-known and appreciated statue “Freedom” (“Laisvė”) in Kaunas. The museum has been established at the home of the sculptor in 1999.

Devils’ Museum and Museum of A. Žmuidzinavičius{Putvinskio g. 64}The former home of the painter Antanas Žmuidzinavičius is currently the place of two museums. The first one is the only museum in the world dedicated to the devils, famed for its large collection of over 3000 exhibits. The collection of the devils has been started in 1906, when the first ever devil was donated to the museum by a famous priest and writer, Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas.The second one is a memorial museum of A. Žmuidzinavičius, where the works of the painter himself and his contemporaries are exhibited, as well as books, authentic furniture and a workshop.

Kaunas Picture Gallery {K. Donelaičio g. 16}Modern paintings, graphics and sculptures made by Lithuanians and emigrants since 1945 are exhibited in this gallery. Also, one can see the set of Eastern Art from the collection of Algimantas Miškinis, the office of the avant-garde movement “Fluxus” founder Jurgis Mačiūnas and changing exhibitions of modern arts.

M. K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum {Putvinskio g. 55}The museum collects, preserves, explores and promotes the creative heritage of the most famous Lithuanian artist and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911). Expositions of Lithuanian fine arts (16th – 19th century) and Lithuanian folk art are available here as well.

VMU Aula Magna {Gimnazijos g. 7}

The VMU Aula Magna became the location of numerous cultural and academic events after the restoration of the building of the VMU Faculty of Catholic Theology. In 2003, the city’s music scene was substantially livened up as the acoustically impressive hall of Aula Magna became a popular spot for holding chamber concerts. They are organized once a month by the Aula Magna Music Association and the Chamber Music Support Foundation.

Sugihara House {J. T. Vaižganto g. 30}

Before World War II, between 1939 and 1940, the vice-consul of the Japanese Consulate Chiune (Sempo) Sugihara resided in this house. Jewish people from Lithuania, Poland and Germany received Japanese transit visas from Sugihara, who saved almost 6000 innocent lives in this way. Currently the Sugihara House is both a museum and a public institution, offering a look at the exposition “Visas that saved lives” and serving as the location of the VMU Centre for Japanese Studies.

Club Sesija {S. Daukanto g. 27, 1st floor}

Looking for a place where interesting, unconventional events take place? Club Sesija welcomes everyone interested in cultural, educational or social activities. Anyone is free to join in, explore or observe – interdisciplinary projects, art works, performances and other events are held here. In this space of multifunctional culture, some of the most innovative ideas come to fruition.

VMU History Hall and Museum of S. and S. Lozoraičiai {K. Donelaičio g. 58}

During the interwar period, this now completely renovated building housed the Ministry of Education and the Cabinet of Ministers. Today it is the location of the VMU History Hall and the Museum of S. and S. Lozoraičiai, the father and the son – the former was a diplomat and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, while the latter a diplomat and VMU Honorary Doctor. The museum exhibits personal belongings of the Lozoraičiai family, as well as the collected and maintained archives: video and audio tapes, documents, photos. Authenticity of the exposition allows to reconstruct the environment and spirit of the past times, highlighting the universal historical values through the presentation of these highly respectable people. VMU History Hall and other places of the university offer an exposition illustrating the history of the university and the building itself – archived documents, photos, their reproductions, historical artefacts, possessions and donated exhibits.

Kaunas Botanical Garden {Ž. E. Žilibero g. 6}

The Kaunas Botanical Garden can be found in Freda, in the former place of the Juzefas Godlevskis manor. A quiet park and a greenhouse hold an impressive collection of medicinal and ornamental plants.

VMU Great Hall {S. Daukanto g. 28}

This hall is a busy place – diploma awards ceremony, concerts, dancing and theatre plays are just a few examples of events organized here. Some of the most significant annual cultural events and festivals of Kaunas also take place here, such as Kaunas Jazz and International Festival of Modern Dance.

Art Gallery “101” {Laisvės al. 53}

Functioning since 2008, academic art gallery “101” at VMU plays an important role in the intellectual life of the city. Educational projects, lectures, film viewings and exhibitions here present the cultural and historical context of art, with the aim of enriching the life of the urban and academic community, facilitating critical dialogue and interdisciplinary interpretation of art and culture.

The Music Academy {V. Čepinskio g. 5}

The building of the VMU Music Academy is worth a look not just because it is now swarming with crowds of musical talents seeking education – this is also a significant educational landmark in the history of Kaunas. Built in 1950s, it first served as a secondary school, later vocational school, until finally finding its purpose as the Kaunas Faculty of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in 1989. Now in the hands of Vytautas Magnus University, the academy continues its mission. Anyone who comes to visit this building is fascinated by the magnificent panoramic view of the Kaunas‘ Old Town seen from the second floor.

VMU Jazz Connections Festival

Since 2009, autumn is an especially exciting time for all fans of jazz in Kaunas – it is the time when VMU holds the annual festival Jazz Connections. The event always brings talented local and international performers, ambitious programme, remarkable atmosphere and all kinds of jazz. VMU Rector Prof. Zigmas Lydeka has found the connection here: “Creativity and freedom to experiment – these are the values that best describe both the university and VMU Jazz Connections”.
