V TL’s ever-popular pre-power combination might look unchanged, but the TL-6.5 Series II Signature line-stage preamplifier and S-200 Signature stereo power amplifier are radically revised. The one-box valve preamplifier manages to squeeze in the full functionality (and almost all the performance) from the two-box TL-7.5 flagship from the brand, and features ECC82 valves in the voltage gain stage and a FET-buffered output. This is joined by the S-200 power amp, with its quartet of 6550 or KT88 valves that deliver 200W into five ohm loads, optional single-ended triode operation, differential operation, and a precision regulated bias system developed for the mighty Siegfried mono flagships. Best used in balanced connection, the pair won over Roy Gregory. “The one-box line-stage was always quick and agile,” he said, “but now it has added serious low-frequency extension and grip to the mix, moving it far closer to the flagship 7.5 in overall performance.” When it comes to the S-200, that too is perfectly pitched: “The S-200’s neat trick is to deliver a realistic impression of weight and scale, pitch and extension,” and the pairing created, “a phenomenal display of energy, attitude and sheer musical momentum, filled out with rich, warm colours and an almost physical presence.” He concluded by saying, “Spending time with these VTL amplifiers, it is easy to understand how and why the company has quietly but confidently established itself as the go-to option for versatile, high-powered tube amps. The TL-6.5 and S-200 don’t just tick the boxes – they own this turf!” A phenomenal display of energy, attitude and sheer musical momentum, filled out with rich, warm colours and an almost physical presence.” VTL TL-65 Series II Signature line-stage and S-200 Signature power amplifier Reviewed in Issue 179 EDITOR’S CHOICE 2020 Reproduced from HI-FI+ Issue 182 www.hifiplus.com
