Gospel Message Spreads With The Catholic Communication Campaign,

May 27-28

May 2, 2017

WASHINGTON—The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) collection is an annual national appeal to support evangelization through the internet, television, radio, and print publications. This year’s collection will be taken up in many dioceses the weekend of May 27-28.

“At its core, this collection is a way for all of us to be evangelizers,” said Bishop Joseph J. Tyson of Yakima, Washington, chairman of the Committee on Communications’ Subcommittee on the Catholic Communication Campaign. “The message of the Church is one of hope and mercy—that God walks with us and does not leave us to face our suffering alone. With the collection, this is the message that we share.”

The Catholic Communication Campaign supports projects in the United States and in developing countries where the local Church lacks resources to spread the Gospel message.

Projects include providing access to the daily Mass readings on the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website, with a reach of 7.4 million page views per month. The CCC

collection also shares the travels and daily ministry of Pope Francis through its support of Catholic News Services’ Rome bureau.

In addition, the Catholic Research Resources Alliance is preserving Catholic history in the U.S. thanks to a CCC grant to digitize more than 87,000 pages of Catholic news content that will be available online free to researchers and educators. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a CCC grant is enabling Radio Maria to expand to the Diocese of

Goma to further the evangelization mission of the Church.

Fifty percent of funds collected remain in each diocese to support local Catholic communication projects.

Shareable resources for the collection are available online. More information about the Catholic Communication Campaign is available at www.usccb.org/ccc.

SENATE OF THEPARLIAMENT OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC

STANDING SENATE COMMISSION ON COMPATRIOTS LIVING ABROAD

COMMISSION CHAIRMANPhDr. Tomáš GRULICH

In Prague, 20 April 2017Dear ladies,Dear gentlemen,Dear compatriots,I am very pleased to welcome Mr. Jindřich Bílek, Czech-Australian Pony Express International Co-ordinator of the Voluntary Association, with an off er to take part in the continental Pony Express rides to the USA and Australia.Next year we will celebrate an important 100th anniversary of Czechoslovak Independence and we will remember the founder of the republic and our fi rst president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. We must remind ourselves that if it wasn’t for Czechs and Slovaks abroad, the rise of Czechoslovakia would have been jeopardized.I would like to use his quotation: “A man will endure when he has a goal.”Our compatriots who left Austria-Hungary and then Czechoslovakia, whether it was to the US or Australia, had a goal. The reasons for their departure were diff erent, whether economic, political or life-saving, the goal was to live a better life in a country they chose for their emigration. We thank the US and Australian governments for providing our countrymen with asylum and helping them to start a new life in their new homeland. After the Velvet Revolution, some decided to return home to the Czech Republic, and on the contrary, others, by their free will, left the country and went abroad for work, study, science, love, but already with the intention of returning later on.Both in the past and in the present, we have to admit, brave and courageous people emigrate, who are not afraid to take fate into their own hands.I often meet our compatriots and I am always joyful how they conduct themselves with confi dence and how they like to admit their belonging to the Czech community or to Czech citizenship. They often off er their help to the Czech Republic, which is not always reciprocated. I appreciate these people and, back home, I always say we must more appreciate and cherish our diaspora abroad. I hope the steps that have already been accomplished, such as the possibility of dual citizenship, pick up of travel documents at honorary consulates, and the establishment of an Interdepartmental Commission for Czechs living abroad at the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Aff airs of the Czech Republic, will at least a little improve the relationship between the Czech State and the diaspora living abroad.I wish you all good health and joy of everyday life!

Sincerely,

To fellow countrymen in USA and Australia
