Adopt-A-Grandparent - A student-led program designed to foster meaningful relationships between ECU students and residents of a local retirement community through one-on-one interaction For more information please email ECUAAGgmailcom

Blood Drives - 1 in 4 people will need blood in their lifetime Give the gift of life by donating at one of the many on-campus blood drives listed at wwwecueduvslc Help ECU reach its goal of 3000 units for 2011-2012

Campus Kitchen at ECU - An on-campus program that recovers food from campus dining halls turns it into balanced nourishing meals and delivers those meals to the people in our community who need it most ECU was the first public school in North Carolina to have a Campus Kitchen ECU~WRITES - ECU~READSCOUNTS is a tutorial program for emerging readers and counters (K-2) and ECU~WRITES is a pen pal program at two local elementary schools See page 20 for more details

Fairytale Boutique - A program designed to help young women in Pitt County attend the prom regardless of their financial circumstances The VSLC collects new and gently used prom and formal gowns shoes and accessories that are distributed at no cost to young women in need so they can be the Belle of the Ball Give amp Go - A campus-wide program to encourage and provide a means for students to donate clothing household items and food to be redistributed to those in need Each year in April Give amp Go boxes are placed in residence halls to collect items for the community National Day of Service - MLK Day of Service (January 16 2012) Celebrate service by participating in this large one-time event Registration and information coming soon to wwwecueduvslc

Pirate Playtime - A student-led service initiative that places volunteers at various after school programs in the Greenville community to facilitate games and activities for children in attendance Friday afternoons from 3 pm until 6 pm For more information please email pirateplaytimegmailcom Holocaust Awareness Day - Holocaust Awareness Day includes recitation of Holocaust victimsrsquo names from 6 am - 6 pm followed by a remembrance luminary Students staff faculty and community members are welcome to participate in the reading Luminaries baring the names of Holocaust victims are assembled and placed throughout the University Mall and lit at dusk by volunteers

VSLC On-line Registration ECU students must register with the VSLC before beginning service activities Registering covers students under the VSLCrsquos free liability insurance while doing service Itrsquos quick and easy to register

Where can DE students serve

The VSLC staff suggests using a number of resources to find your service site Contacting the agency and scheduling your service hours is your responsibility but the VSLC staff will provide additional support if needed

Documenting Service Hours

Document your service hours on a service time sheet You are responsible for documenting your service hours and completing all areas of the sheet Remember to have the person supervising you at the agency sign your time sheet Return your service time sheet to the VSLC via fax or as as attached document

It is very important to return your completed time sheets to the VSLC This way the VSLC staff can track you service hours and provide you verification letters for employment purposes scholarships and graduate or professional school

New Service at Vidant Medical Center (formerly Pitt County Memorial Hospital)

Serving at Vidant Medical Center is a great opportunity for students to get exposure to careers in health care build networks with health care providers and accumulate hours required for admittance to professional schools Students may volunteer year- round

There are two ways to serve at Vidant Medical Center

1 Volunteers Services - This office is for general volunteering at the hospital A 50-hour commitment is required per semester College volunteer application deadlines Fall ndash September 15 2012 and Spring ndash February 1 2013 Tje last fall orientation is scheduled for September 26 See page 12 for more information

Service-Learning Cut Off Dates The VSLC will NOT place service-learners at community partner sites on or after

bull Fall semester - October 15 2012 bull Spring semester - March 22 2013

The VSLC encourages students to begin service-learning hours early in the semester prior to fall or spring breaks Stu-

dents who begin hours late have fewer learning opportunities and can cause unnecessary hardship for our community

partners and the people and animals they serve Students who do not begin service-learning hours prior to the cut off

dates will have limited options for community partnerships and may be unable to complete their hours

DESCRIPTION A non-profit arts organization dedicated to educate inspire and make the arts accessible to the entire community within Greenville and Pitt County East Carolina University and the eastern North Carolina region Emerge is the local arts council for Pitt County
