    What is VSAT?

VSAT stands for Very Small Aperture Terminalwhich refers to a small fixed earth station.

    VSAT technology is atelecommunications system

based on wireless technology. A Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT), is atwo-

way satellite ground station withadishantennathat is smaller than 3 meters.

VSATs access satellites ingeosynchronous orbit torelay data from small remoteearth stations toother terminals or master earth station, the"hubs"

    Vital roleand Importance

VSATs provide the vital communication link required to

set up a satellite based communication network.

It is very easy to use, the connections are extremely

fast, and the service is flexible and always reliable, evenin the villages.

This type of Internet connection is also great for areas

that are rural or are perhaps undeserved by reliableInternet Service Providers.

VSAT broadband is a way to have the latest technology

without having to go through a local ISP.

    MASTER EARTH STATION

Anearth station, ground station, or earthterminal is aterrestrial terminal stationdesigned for extraplanetarytelecommunication withspacecraft, and/or receptionofradio waves from anastronomical radio source.

Earth stations may occupy either a fixed or itinerantposition.

Theearth station itself is usually anantenna thatincludes a low-noiseamplifier, adown-converter, aswell as anelectronics receiver.

Whenanearth station successfully transmits radiowaves to a spacecraft (or viceversa), itestablishes atelecommunications link.

    SATELLITE(GEO STATIONARY SATELLITE)

A geostationary satellite is anearth-orbiting satellite, placedatanaltitude ofapproximately 35,800kilometers (22,300 miles) directly over theequator.

The principal advantage ofthis type of satellite is thefactthatanearthbounddirectional antennacan beaimedandthen left in position without furtheradjustment.

Another advantage is the factthat becausehighlydirectional antennas can be used, interference fromsurface-based sources, and from other satellites, isminimized.

    VSAT ACCESS TECHNOLOGIES

The primary objectiveandadvantage ofthesenetworks is to maximisethe use ofcommonsatelliteand other resources amongstall VSATsites.

The method by whichthesenetworks optimisethe use of satellitecapacity, and spectrumutilisation ina flexibleandcosteffective mannerare referredto as satelliteaccess schemes.

Each oftheabovetopologies is associated withanappropriate satelliteaccess scheme. The mostcommonly used satelliteaccess schemes are:

    CONCLUSION

With VSAT, dedicateddata, voice, fax, internet, orvideo conferencing can be provided withaguaranteedavailability exceeding 99.95% in

remoteareas and invillages. Invillages onecanusethis technology for their progress.

They can usethis technology inthe fields liketelemedicine, teleeducation, onecaneventhe

lectures from the internet. VSAT networks arenow viewedas the most

    flexible platform inthecommunications.
