Volunteers Recognized at
Annual Appreciation Dinner
On Tuesday, February 18th, BCM volunteers and supporters gathered
at Peachtree Presbyterian Church to celebrate BCM’s 18th Annual
Appreciation Dinner.
Highlights included personal testimonies and encouragement from re-
cent graduates of The 70/30 Project, Christina Grady and Tangelia
Broom. Special recognition went to our partner retiring Board members
(see pg. 2), and the distinguished volunteers pictured below.
We hope you enjoyed the festivities! Special thanks to Outback Steak-
house of Buckhead for providing the meal, Peachtree Presbyterian
Church for their hospitality and to all the volunteers who helped make
the event a success!

Meet Jackie
Jackie moved to Atlanta fifteen years ago and has
worked 40 hours a week for the same company ever
since. Despite her steady work history, she knew little
about money management and that, plus her lack of
budgeting skills, led her and her seven year-old son to
become homeless – an experience she never wants to
revisit. Through BCM’s Transitional Housing Program,
she learned valuable
parenting skills as well
as how to focus on her
financial goals. Jackie
graduated from the
program this summer,
having increased her
income, paid off nearly
$10,000 in debt and
acquired the skills to
manage her household
budget.

Client Perspective Encouragement for the Volunteers and Supporters
of Buckhead Christian Ministry
The following is a portion of Christina Grady’s speech that
she made at the 2014 Annual Appreciation Dinner.
Christina and her husband, John, are recent graduates of
The 70/30 Project.
“My husband, son and I were recovering from surgery when
our plan collided with the harsh reality, we were out of food,
our medical bills were overwhelming and we had no
resources left to help our family. I contacted the United
Way hotline asking at that time for community agencies
which helped with food and living expenses. To our dismay,
all the agencies that served our zip code were out of funds,
or they had maxed out the new cases for the month. I called
BCM countless times because I was determined to get
through the busy line and the persistence paid off. An intake
worker scheduled an appointment and the journey of change
began...
Upon my arrival, I meet with a high spirited woman name
Beth and she listened to me without hurry. She showed
direction, empathy and a shared compassion of being a
mom. We had more meaningful small talk hugged and then
another life changing event happened. I meet with our ‘SHE
-RO’ Mary Alvarez. Mary took my family and I under her
wing and transformed our lives forever. At our first
meeting, Mary provided insightful information about the
program that we would later come to know as the 70/30
Project. It was like pressing the reset button for our family
financially...
Our goal as a family is to be debt free with a savings
account. We are well on our way because we have been
equipped with the tools of success. We believe BCM is the
compass that changed our direction. BCM provided a
gateway for us to restructure the way we had been living, it
wasn't business as usual. Terry said it best, "we should
manage our money and not let our money manage us".
These are goals that many people have. We just had help in
making them a reality, while at the same time being treated
with great respect, with the acknowledgement that we were
the ones making these strides. All the while we had people
at BCM were always cheering us on and celebrating with us
as friends.”

“Through the help of
volunteer coach
Robin Ryder (right),
Ignacio (left) saved
and paid down $3,000
in credit card debt.
‘As an intake volunteer, I could see that many of our
clients had not been taught the skills to manage their
money,’ said Ryder, who helped to take in new cases.
‘Through the program, it helps break the cycle and the
clients can help their children, hopefully get out of
debt, and stay out of debt. Keeping the working poor
on their feet also helps our community.’
That is the sentiment that BCM has wanted to extend to
their clients and the community as it provides for those
who need its services. ‘As long as you can budget and/
or balance a checkbook, you can volunteer for the
money management program and help someone get out
of debt,’ continued Ryder.
Through volunteers in all of its various programs,
BCM, as a whole, serves approximately 9,000 people a
year. The money management program is extended to
20 families per year, and last year, the families were
able to pay down $70,000 worth of debt while in the 20
-week program.
Cunningham added, ‘These are people we depend on
every day, and if we can help them stay safe and secure
in their homes, it can really strengthen our
community.’”
BCM is so pleased to welcome our 28th
partner church, Brookhaven Presbyterian
Church! The congregation is currently
meeting at Oglethorpe University and
recently completed its first food drive.
Thank you all so much for partnering with
us to serve our neighbors in need!
