George Anne Elmore welcomed campers and counselors donning their whites to Tejas Chapel for a Sunday Church service. To start, the Junior Choir performed ‘Amazing Grace’ led by Kalina S. Comanche Hilltopper Mary Crow M conducted the service and Comanche Hilltopper Mckenna T read the affirmation, reaffirming one’s uniqueness and contributions and how great things can come from supporting one another. The speaker was counselor Jen B who relayed how gratitude for blessings is so important and loving God everyday. Emily B concluded with a prayer and Marsha ended the service with friendship hugs. Overall, it was a beautiful way to conclude a great first week in the Sea of Woods!

Retreads RepeatBy Buzzard Chief, Coach M

The veteran squad of Buzzards led by our fearless leader Marsha Elmore won the annual Buzzard softball game on Sunday evening. Cheered on by most of the camp, both squads competed admirably but the rookies could not compete with the veteran staff of counselors and a few last minute “pick-ups” to the roster. :-) Both teams demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and camaraderie, which will surely be on display by the campers at the upcoming First Field Day this Saturday.

Way to set a positive tone on the field of play, counselors!

Summer Singers Rock! By Channy C

The night of Summer Singers is always a blast. Every camper looks forward to the time when they can boogie.

The Summer Singers are a group of college students from Oklahoma Christian University who perform top hits and sing covers of popular songs. Of the music selection, tunes such as

Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ and Justin Timberlake’s ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ were some of the most popular tunes. Aztec Hilltopper Molly B comments, “It was a great night, and a great last Summer Singers for hilltoppers.” The event took place on the basketball courts with plenty of room to dance with friends. More great music was

played such as Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean?’ to Twenty One Pilots’ ‘Ride.’ It was a great atmosphere with everyone singing and dancing to all the songs.

The night ended with smiles on the campers faces, Summer Singers shirts in their hands, and great camp memories in their hearts.

Hilltoppers Rock Out!

The Adventures of Gus and Lui By Christina W

It was a hot, Sunday afternoon and Lui was enjoying a nice nap in the golf cart when he heard a loud ‘ping!’. Lui jolted awake, looking around frantically for what could have made the noise. He found that it was his owner swinging a bat in the air. He pawed Gus awake. “Gus! Gus! Look!” Gus sat up groggily. “Lui, whatever it is, leave it alone,” said Gus. “But it’s our owner! She has a giant stick! And there are tennis balls everywhere! It’s a dream come true!” With that, Lui bolted from the golf cart and onto the field. “Lui, wait!”, exclaimed Gus as he ran after his friend. They then realized that this wasn’t a good idea, as they had ran into the middle of the Buzzard softball game! Balls were flying everywhere and people were running from bases trying not to trample them. Suddenly, the game took a pause and Marsha promptly gathered the small, furry dogs in her arms and placed them in the Office. Gus turned towards Lui and said, “I told you to leave it alone.”

Second Tribal Hill - First TermTejas Tribal HillComanche Tribal Hill Aztec Tribal Hill

The Aztecs climbed their sacred tribal hill for the second time this past Thursday. All the Aztecs gathered at the rock wall and proceeded to walk towards lower hill.

Upon arriving at lower hill, Activities Chairman, Emily A, read the upcoming events for the week and Head Cheerleader, Maddie S presented this week’s awards. Princess Win-Em-All went to Karly Rae L and Libby R received High Point Intermediate.

Morgan Taylor T, Aztec Leader, greeted the tribe and dedicated the hill to sportsmanship, teamwork and determination. After, Anna C, Hadley M, Caroline M, Audrey H, and Barrett G lit five torches to represent these 3 important qualities. Hannah J, Mary Grace A, Megan D, Raine O, Annie W, Avery K, and AJ J spoke about the importance of sportsmanship with the Comanches and Tejas, and also working together as a tribe to win Field Day.

The hill continued with the presentation of the weekly awards. Cypress Bearers were Destyn G and Kieran O, the Cypress Girl was Evie S and the most spirited Aztec, Willow K, received the Montezuma award. The softball award was given to Caroline M and the war canoe award to Ella C.

Morgan-Taylor T then reiterated the importance of the Aztec tribe working as a team to support one another and to be proud of yourself no matter the outcome of First Field Day. Our guest speaker was Coach M. She spoke on the Aztec ideals and how important they were to use all 5 on Field Day. She pumped us all up!

To bring the evening to a close, Mary Bass M said a closing prayer while the Aztecs held hands in a friendship circle. The Aztecs sang their tribal song and ended the night with Taps.

This past Thursday night, we climbed Comanche tribal hill for the second time this term. This hill helped prepare and motivate all the Comanches, new and old, for field day.

Before climbing tribal hill, every Comanche met at our lower hill in Tejas Chapel. Our Head Cheerleader, Joy A, gave out friendship and sunshine awards. Next, Mary Crow M, our Activities Chairman, read our upcoming events to the tribe. After the awards and schedule were presented, our talented choral director, Emily B, led the toasts to the Aztec and Tejas tribes.

As the Comanches climbed to upper hill singing a sacred chant, they met the hilltoppers singing the traditional friendship song. Upon arriving to upper hill, Liza R, lit a torch toasting the Comanche tribe and their spirit. Bailey J lit her torch for sportsmanship, explaining the importance of being a gracious winner. Camille M lit her torch for trust in our sponsors, ourselves, and each other. The torch that was lit by Sydney S was for the Comanches’ will to win. Finally, the last torch, lit by Annabel D, symbolized victory while being humble.

Promptly after the torches were lit, the Comanche sponsors acted out and read the story of “How Much I Love you.” The story ended with a motivational talk from Lily, Colleen and Regan that gave the Comanche Tribe a spark of inspiration to try their hardest on field day.

Next, our weekly awards were given out. Rock Pile Leader went to Sophie R, High Point Intermediate went to Harper P, and Emma F received High Point Junior. The softball award was given to Katherine H, the war canoe paddle went to Rachel S, Spirit stick went to Reagan M, and megaphone to Liza R.

At the end of tribal hill, we recited Squish’s prayer, then sang the Comanche tribal song and Taps.

All Tejas climbed tribal hill for the second time this term. Everyone met on the basketball courts and ascended toward lower hill.

High Senior, Brooke A, began lower hill with the opening prayer. Activities Chairman, Daisy F, read the activities for the upcoming week. After the activities were read, friendship awards were passed out to all the Tejas. Lower hill ended with the closing prayer read by Mary Margaret O.

All the Tejas followed the candlelit path presented by the candlelight girls toward upper hill. Hilltopper, Jill P, opened upper hill with the opening prayer. Kelsey R, Nicole Z, and Fanny G then read a poem. After, Erin F, Elly O, ad Molly B lit the three fires of friendship, loyalty and sportsmanship.

Tejas hi l l continued with the welcoming our guest speakers, former Tejas, Madison D and Susannah A. Both of them gave a speech that got all the Tejas excited and confident for the upcoming Saturday. Following the nice speeches, tribal awards were received.

High Point Junior went to Annais R. Campbell K received the High Point Intermediate award. The spirit stick was given to Anna B. Maddie F was recognized with the Purple T. This week’s Memory Candlelight Girl was Nicole Z. The war canoe paddle was received by Elizabeth M and the softball award went to Clementine L.

The Tejas second tribal hill came to a close with Margaret G reading the closing prayer. Lucy Jane H, Tejas Leader, gathered everyone into a friendship circle and together we sang Taps and Tejas Forever.

Tribute & Traditions VesperThe 38 Hilltoppers of First Term 2016

performed the Tribute Vesper, “Choices”, the first Friday night of the term at the Pier. Dating back to the 70s, this vesper has been brought back just about every decade. The vesper centers on Robert Frost’s poem, ‘The Road Less Traveled.’ The Hilltoppers presented two “roads” for campers to take – for example, Easy Attainment versus High Purpose or Hurry Up versus Loveliness. Each Hilltopper spoke on which road was easier compared to better for our lives. They ended the vesper with the Spirit of Waldemar and what it really means to each one of us.

Bravo to Louise B and Caroline K for directing yet another fabulous Tribute Vesper!

Congratulations to this week ’s Buzzards o f the Week, Jen and Margaret Grace!

‘My First Field Day’ By Caroline F

You and most of your cabin wake up 30 minutes before Reveille to prepare for the exciting day ahead of you. You put on all of the purple clothing that you can find in your trunk. Everyone in your cabin is giddy with joy. As soon as Reveille sounds everyone is rushing out of the cabin to their events. As you are sprinting out of Ranch House Two, the cool breeze of the morning blows on your face. When you reach the archery range, you notice you are last in the longest line you have ever seen. Luckily, Jill calls your name to shoot so you can skip the line. You are shooting with two of your cabin mates, one of them in your tribe! You are encouraging one another! Once you finish, you feel very accomplished and joyful. It definitely was not a morning to miss!

Junior Drama Presents “Matilda”By Director, Brennan H

Matilda the Musical is a stage musical based on the children’s novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. The musical’s narrative centers on Matilda, a precocious 5-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis who loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life. The kids travel through five different scenes; the miracles

of life and their fallacies, tricks to get back at evil parents, the scariness of school, reclaiming the school as their own, and growing up. Each child takes on a role of some part of life, whether it be the fat kid who must eat a chocolate cake, or an evil principal who makes him do so. The play is a (mostly) funny shortened rendition of the original musical.

We cannot wait to perform!! CAST:
