As of 02/2018 the average GPA was 4.2 with 21 seniors having GPA’s over 4.0. ALL are honors graduates. As of May 10th 22 students have been offered $5,532,760 in documented scholarship monies Twenty six of the thirty graduating seniors plan a career in the medical or health fields. CLARIFICATION ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENTS It is expected that ALL students will complete 30 hours of community service for each school year. Students must submit a minimum of 20 hours no later than May 31st each year in order to defer the remaining 10 hours for completion in the summer and due the first week of school in September. Summer hours may NOT be banked and applied to the following year. However, summer hours may count towards the grand total. Students who do not submit the minimum 20 hours by May 31st will be on program probation. Note: Students may have only one probation period before being exited. Guest Speakers & in the Field ….The Year in Review

Students listened to professionals from a wide array of professions in the field of health and medicine.

Here’s a listing of some of the speakers and activities from this past year:

FIRST SEMESTER

Select seniors were invited to attend Research Day at EVMS. Paired with medical students, they listened to research poster

presentations made by EVMS faculty and medical students.

Program students viewed an Autopsy via a two-way feed from the COSI Museum in Ohio

The annual Haunted Hallway project allowed many students to interact with EVMS medical students in an alternative to Trick

or Treating...great fun was had by all!

Partnering upper classmen volunteers and interested freshmen were paired to form Big-Little mentoring. Students gathered for

a clean-up Maury project; a holiday gathering; a study skills workshop and various community service activities.

Dr. Paul Aravich visited the Freshmen with his “Bucket of Hearts”.

Select Bio Ethics seniors attended the SNGH BioEthics committee meeting each month.

Dr Mira Mariano and former MHSP student & DPT candidate Christine Quejada, spoke to all students about the pathways to

becoming a physical therapist.

Juniors and freshmen shared their respective knowledge of the heart with a group interaction around heart models.

Many students took advantage of the Medical Explorers evening programs at EVMS. “Stop the Bleed” was a favorite.

Sophomores participated in the “You Be the Pharmacist” interactive role play through the COSI live web feed program. Basic

patient questioning-counseling skills were explored during the 90 minute case study.

The annual White Shirt Ceremony was held to honor program seniors. Our keynote speaker was the class of 2017 Spirit of the

Oath award winner, Celine Miller.

SECOND SEMESTER

Juniors presented poster projects to EVMS MPH students...posters focused on global issues and each group presented not only a

visual representation of their topic, but also presented oral details on data and sources.

Freshmen visited EVMS to tour the Anatomy lab for the first time. Juniors were very attentive in the instruction and highlights

they presented in small groups

Juniors toured VCU and the MCV School of Nursing during the yearly college campus visit to prepare them for the college

application process. An added treat was having lunch in the dining hall and meeting up with former MHSP students: Zachary

Green and Marina Pugh.

Anatomy and senior level students attended the Donor Memorial Ceremony at EVMS to express appreciations for the learning

opportunities afforded them through the anatomy labs.

Dr. Mario Rodriquez, veterinarian in charge of the EVMS research animals used in testing came to speak with students about a

very different role in veterinary sciences.

All program students viewed a live webcast of total knee replacement surgery. Juniors were able to ask questions of the surgeon

while the surgery was ongoing.

Seniors participated in a genetic counseling webcast through COSI which included discussion of a case study along with the

ethical and legal ramifications.

Later in the month, Dr. Castillo discussed end-of-life issues and considerations with senior; The importance of advanced

directives was a huge take-away learned.

In preparation for national certification testing, EMR students went into the field to observe the Norfolk Emergency Training

Center to see first hand the tasks they will be required to perform.

Block 1/2 ChemMed sophomores participated in their turn at the annual Sentara Norfolk General Job Shadow Day.

Freshmen attended the first ever SNGH Career Expo held at Scope. Over 45 different health professions exhibited and shared

information about the education, training and specific tasks of unique careers.

Juniors learned about the new pathology assistant program at EVMS when Kerwin Kloeheffer, M.A./P.A. when student toured

the third floor labs. And added experience was time on the interactive Anata-Mange, a virtual anatomical dissection.

Just before MHSP graduation, seniors toured the LifeNet Transplant facility in Virginia Beach where they learned about the

value of organ and tissue donation along with experiencing the very personal decision made by donors and donor families.
