Data Collection Methods

The information presented in this Directory was obtained from a survey of all prospective employers of selected medical specialties as described below. Results

represent a 100% response rate for each specialty.

The following specialties were surveyed:

General Internal Medicine: Medical practice entities with one or more general internists or hospitalists.

Pediatrics: Medical practice entities with one or more pediatricians.

Obstetrics/Gynecology: Medical practice entities with one or more obstetrician/gynecologists.

General Surgery: Medical practice entities with one or more general surgeons.

Emergency Medicine: Medical practice entities with one or more emergency medicine physicians.

Entities surveyed include hospitals, health systems, Iowa-based hospitalist and emergency medicine contractors, private practices, correctional facilities, state health, student health units, and community health centers. Entities were surveyed as appropriate to the particular specialty.

Physician Consultation Services Medical Practice Development Program

The Office of Statewide Clinical Education Programs provides consultative services to physicians interested in Iowa medical practice opportunities. The services include:

Advice on practice site selection criteria;

Community profiles and physician rosters;

Confidential inquiries regarding specific practice opportunities;

Identification of important considerations concerning specific opportunities;

Practice management consultations;

Negotiation assistance with established physicians, hospital representatives, and community recruitment groups;

Substantive reviews of physician contracts; and

Assisting physicians after they begin a new practice.

How to Use the Directory The 2016-2017 Medical Practice Opportunities Directory is divided into five major sections by specialty: General Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, General Surgery, and Emergency Medicine. Each section includes a summary with a map listing the communities offering opportunities.

All opportunity listings are office-based practice unless otherwise specified.

“Other” professional opportunities listed in this directory are identified in bold and include, for example, Community Health, State Health, and Teaching opportunities.

Hospital Medicine (Hospitalist) opportunities are included within the General Internal Medicine section. Office-based practices are also indicated. Both are listed with seperate bullets.

The Emergency Medicine section provides full-time emergency medicine opportunities in Iowa, and indicates those that require physicians specifically board-certified in emergency medicine. If not indicated, family physicians will be considered as candidates for the emergency medicine opportunities.

Each community listing includes the following:

Community population (2010 US Census Bureau data)

Total number of physicians in the community, and the number of physicians within each respective section’s specialty in parentheses

Total number of acute hospital beds

Location of the opportunity by region of Iowa as indicated by the initials below the city name, i.e. Northwest (NW), North Central (NC), Northeast (NE), Southeast (SE), South Central (SC), and Southwest (SW)

Each contact to the right of the community information represents at least one opportunity in the city listed in the first column. E-mail addresses are provided when known. Multiple types of opportunities for one contact are identified by bullet points. For example, if a contact has an office-based and hospitalist opportunity in the same community, both opportunities are listed under the contact with a bullet point.

All opportunities are part of an integrated health system unless otherwise specified. Asterisks to the right of the contact person’s name indicate whether the opportunity is an independent practice or a multisite group practice.

“ * ” indicates an independent practice.

“ ** ” indicates that the opportunity is in a multi-site group practice, exclusive of hospital sponsorship.

No asterisk indicates that the opportunity is part of a health care delivery system, integrating both physicians and at least one hospital in some form.
