On Thursday 21st November Derrickpassed away after an illness bravelyborne.

Derrick, his lovely wife Maureen, their twodaughter's Melanie and Julie, along withone of Derricks cows, all arrived in SouthScarle at Coronation farm in 1971. My firstmeeting with Derrick resulted in me milkingthe said cow whilst they went away on

holiday! This resulted in a friendship thatlasted until his sad passing. We sharedmany happy times both at work and play, play being games of long alley skittles andhis favourite, snooker. Tuesday nightscouldn't come around quick enough whenDerrick, Brian Parkin and myself would goto Merv Barnards for our weekly game ofsnooker. Derrick was also a steam trainenthusiast, being very knowledgeable onthe subject, and he and I would go to the

    Palace Theatre to watch RailwaysRevisited.

People I have spoken to have allexpressed their sorrow at the sad loss ofDerrick. He was liked by everyone that methim. He was a kind, considerate man, atrue gentleman. He was extremely proud ofhis grandchildren Emma, Jenna, Ben andRyan, attending Emma's wedding in Augustand looking his best, despite his illness.Maureen has been, in Derrick's own wordsto me, " an absolute brick". She lookedafter him till the end, making sure with the

girls that he stayed at home. He will bemissed by so many, none more so thanmyself; he was the finest friend anyonecould wish for. Rest in Peace dear friend.

    Terry Jacklin

In the musical Annie there is a song calledYOU ARE NEVER FULLY DRESSEDWITHOUT A SMILE and it can be said by

all who knew Derrick that he was ALWAYSfully dressed! His smile lit up the village.Whenever you met him, whatever theseason or time of day, Derrick alwayssmiled and was full of laughter.

When I visited him two weeks before hedied he was resting and feeling poorly butthat smile was still there and we shared ajoke or two. As Terry rightly says in histribute, Derrick was a true gentleman and

he will be sadly missed by us all.

    Roy Turner

    TRIBUTE TO DERRICK POLLARD

    A Family Thankyou

Maureen, Melanie and Julie would like

to thank everyone for the cards of

    condolence, flowers, kind wishes, and

many kind offers of help after the sad

    loss of Derrick.

Seasons greetings to youall. It has been just over sixmonths since I picked up thebaton from Alan Froggattearly in June this year forthe role of Parish Clerk. Ithink it finally hit home whenI collected the filing cabinetand managed to find a home

for it in my garage. Lookingthrough the files I realisedthat even though I havelived in the village for over20 years it was fascinatingto see how much has goneon over the years that I hadno idea about.

    A VARIETY OF ISSUES

So how has the first sixmonths gone? Well in truth,

quickly; mind you everythingseems to be going quickly atthe moment! I have to say ithas been very enjoyablewith a good variety of issues

to deal with, ask me again inanother six months!

One of the key issues hasbeen that o f vehic lestravelling through the villageat excessive speed During aSpeed Watch exercise inOctober, over 2 days, morethan 15% of vehicles were inexcess of the 30 MPH limitwith the highest recorded at47 MPH. We have had areview of the signage and itspositioning within the villageby Highways but as yet Ivenothing to report. Once Iknow anything I will leteveryone know, meanwhile, please observe the 30 limit

    within the village boundaries.

Winter is well and truly uponus and the observantamongst you will have seen

an extra Grit Bin installed onthe corner of Main Street andAmos Lane. We have alimited supply of Grit, so ifyou use any from the binso n t h e h i g h w a y o rpavements, please let meknow so that they can betopped up.

Advent Sunday marks the beginning of the Churchyear. So, Happy New Year! As so often, the Church is ahead of the world and we dont

have to wait for January for our celebrations of the New Year having got Christmas done.

Advent is a season of preparation. There is the countdown to Christmas and the coming of

the Christ child, the love of God coming into the world in a special, and vulnerable way.And what a delight it is to have the invention of chocolate Advent calendars! And therere

all the other preparations so many people have to travel through. May your preparations go

well and your keeping of Christmas and New Year be richly enjoyable.

I am enjoying being a part of so many occasions for celebration throughout the East Trent

Group of Churches. Im going to be sharing in a number of Carol Services, and, although

the carols might be the same each service will be different, from village to village.

Christmas can be a very special time in family life, and just as no two family celebrations

can be the same, so no church celebrations can be the same. Yet at the centre of it all is

the same truth: God coming in love in Jesus. It is love that is the real focus of Christmas, and in South Scarle this is being lived through the opening up of the nave of the church so

that it may serve as Godly space for the community. So, my best wishes to all readers as

you celebrate, as you mark the living of love.

    ABC BOOK CLUB

Well, what a varied and interesting year

we've had with our lovely ABC Book Club!

We started 2013 with an evening of musicand poetry when we shared bits of both thathad had an impact on our thoughts. Such avariety! Jane played James Taylor, mainlybecause JT likes cowboys, Anne shared alate renaissance piece which brought atingle to us all, and non-musical Marge a bitof Hugh Masakela. You had to be there! Ourpoems varied too; we had Tennison fromLynn and "Watch Your French", a bit of agiggle supplied by Tonia.

We always say that being in a book clubmakes us read material out of our comfortzone and persevere with books we wouldn'tnormally let darken our shelves. I haven'tread Jeffrey Archer for years and after"Paths of Glory" I probably won't again. Wesort of agreed that he trivialised an epic

story. Tonia summed it up when she said"Don't like Jeffrey but glad I read it". KateGrenville's "Secret River" showed how welike to link a book with our supper. We hadpictures of Australia and authentic food fromTonia (Kim even played the didgeridoo!).

Marilyn gave us our own choice ofThomas Hardy in October and we heardcomments on a fair spread of his novelsfrom "Under the Greenwood Tree" to

"Madding Crowd" but the star of the eveningwere Hardy's poems, especially his warpoetry. "Christmas 1942" was a real contrastto the rural idylls. We had a Dorset inspiredsupper from Marilyn which included themysterious frumenty, a sort of spicy wheatporridge, and apple cake, Mmm...lovely.

"Going Postal", part of Terry Pratchett'sDisc World Series, was another revelation!

Georgina said she'd never read anythinglike it but fought her way past an initial lack

of interest and went on to love it, evenreading it twice to savour the delicious weirdbits and wonderful use of English. Anita, who chose it for us, loved the humour, witand daft ideas and is now tackling another.

Sue Townsend split us, "The Queen and I"went down like a lead balloon for some andmade others laugh with enjoyment. Noaccounting for taste, thank goodness!

Another unusual choice was Florence's"Sugar Girls" about life in the Tate and Lylefactories during and after World War 2which Kate described as great social historybut with potential to be a better book. Thecharacters tended to get a bit mixed up but

some were portrayed with touching insight.Filed under "Misery Memoirs" atOxfamMaria McCann's "As meat Love Salt", waswrongly categorised as historical crimefiction thought Marj who chose the book. This novel had a main character we foundhard to like, too much bodily fluid, information and violence, and was generallythought to have been too long. Not a hit!

    Our own animal stories

Our members always try to meet thegiven brief and when we read Lynn's choiceof Claire Balding's autobiography webrought an animal inspired story of our ownto the meeting. So on a hot summerevening we listened to, and chortled over, stories about Anita's first pony which waswon in a raffle, Florence's dog Beatty's firstencounter with a pheasant and Jane's days

in the Morgan Horse display team. Sheloved Claire's book, by the way, ANDFINISHED IT!!

As I said , a great year and we can't wait forour Secret Santa and alternative read at theend of it.

    Thanks fellow members, keep reading!

To say work started on the re-ordering of St Helenas Church to provide villagers with acommunity space in early September 2013 would be to do a disservice to all those whohave planned, laboured, and fundraised for several years. However it was only a few shortmonths ago that the first signs of activity outside and inside St Helenas became evident.

September: The preparation kicked off with removal of carpets, and the font, organ andchancel received their protective covering. Pews were removed and sold, mostly, tovillagers. Up came the wooden floor and then ton after ton of concrete below that. Theback-breaking work was eased by the use of a mini-digger. The surreal sight of that in themiddle of the Nave will live long in the memory!

October: This month witnessed lots of co-ordinated activity between the builder, theelectrician and the plumber. Foundations, walls, floor joists, underfloor insulation, electricalconduits, floor and wall sockets. Quick to write, but an amazing effort from the team to getall that done in four weeks.

November: November was all about the heating - appropriate, as temperatures outsidebegan to drop. Underfloor trays went on top of the insulation and floor joists, ready for thehundreds and hundreds of metres of pipe. Inside, the boiler and control centre werecompleted. Outside, the oil tank was connected to the boiler, ready for commissioning.

December: So whats left? Well the system will need to run for a while to help bring thebuilding to temperature. Also during December the floor and lighting will be completed.Dancing would be hard without either! After that we would love to get some help cleaningup. As you can imagine, there is just a wee bit of dusting to be done. But more on thatsubject in due course.

Official OpeningJanuary 2014: Our first official event! UNMYTHABLE will be held on Saturday 25thJanuary at 7.30pm. Look out for the advert elsewhere in this issue of The Scarlian. All we

will say is Prepare to be a legend.

February 2014: The official opening and dedication will be held on Sunday 2nd Februaryfrom 12 noon. More details to follow.

The Future?: Its yours to shape and mould. If you havent been to one of the two opendays earlier in the year, come to the opening ceremony, and come again even if you werewith us for those events. Only then can you see for yourself what a truly unique, magnificentand awe-inspiring venue South Scarle Community Centre is. How will you utilise thisamazing resource? Its your decision to make!

    STEPPING DOWN!

South Scarle entering a new phase....

With the completion of the Community Centre in St.Helenas Church, and the verysuccessful launch of the Community Website, we are entering a new phase ofvillage activity. I have, therefore, decided to step down as Editor of The Scarlianand this issue will be the last one for which I will be responsible.

I have edited and designed the village newsletter for over nine years during whichtime I have produced 30 editions. It has been enjoyable, if at times a littlefrustrating, and I am grateful to those Scarlians who have taken the time andtrouble to provide articles and stories. Kate Murrell who has never been a hands-on editor over that time, but has given me great support and encouragement, hasalso stepped down.

Whether there is a need for a newsletter in these days of instantaneouscommunication and up-to-the-minute news, especially as we now have an excellentwebsite facility organised by Craig Law, is a question that will have to be discussedat a future Parish Meeting. I personally think that our printed publication, which isquite costly to produce, has outlived its usefulness, hence my decision to call it aday and bow out gracefully.

    And Mellow Fruitfulness

After our late and frankly awful spring the amazing abundance in the hedgerows this Autumn

has seemed to be yet another example of good old mother nature getting it right in the end. Ihave pictures of 20 different fruits and berries found on hedges or in gardens in the village,so keep alert - there will be questions.

Chicken keepers beware! We have acquired a very bold fox! I saw him only a few days agoin a paddock beside Amos Lane. He gazed at the dog and me with interest but no apparentfear. After what seemed a long time he turned and ambled away. At the time of writing thereis still plenty of natural food, but as winter grips lock up your chickens! He was a beautifulcreature but I am sure my admiration would falter if he raided a henhouse of mine.

    The Merry Berry Christmas Quiz

You will need the answer sheet below and access to the Community Centre websitewww.southscarlecommunitycentre.com If you are not on line why not do the quiz with friends overChristmas. - itll be a change from monopoly!

Just look at the pictures on the website and identify as many fruits and berries as you can.Put your completed answer sheet into Church Farm Shop between 2ndand 4thJanuary 2014. Therewill be silly sweet and sticky prizes. If more than one person in your house wants to enter just writeout the answers.
