The week of May 8, 2016 Things Worth Fighting For A few days ago, though I am not a big professional ice hockey fan, I was watching the Nashville Predators play the Anaheim Ducks. It was fascinating watching powerful men effortlessly skating on ice. Occasionally a fight would break out between the players, and I could tell they meant business. I thought to myself, those people be- lieve winning is worth a fight. I have a question for you: is there anything in your life that you think is worth fighting for? The apostle Paul said to young Timothy, fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confes- sion in the presence of many witnesses(I Timothy 6:12). I admit that my nature is somewhat passive, and when possible my goal is to avoid confrontation. The idea of fighting is not something I look forward to because there is a possibility of getting beaten up. However, I must accept that living as a Chris- tian in this present world can and will put me in a situation where I will be forced to take a stand. We must see how two forces are at work in this present world and Christians are caught between the two. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wick- edness in the heavenly places(Ephesians 6:12). Paul, describing the challenge of be- ing involved in this great conflict said; For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please(Galatians 5:17). Thankfully, we have the Lord on our side working, fighting with us and giving us the strength to continue the fight. We must understand the Lord helps us, but He will not do what He expects of us. David took on the giant Goliath, and he was victori- ous. The Lord used David, his sling, and his smooth stones to kill the giant. David real- ized, for the battle is the Lords and He will give you (Goliath) into our hands(I Samuel 17:47.) Nonetheless, David used what he had for victory. Davids victory came because he had faith in God, and he was willing to use the weapons available to him. In addition, he had this – the proper attitude! He accept- ed the challenge and was willing to fight in order to win. Continued inside . . . Continued from inside . . .

My question to you and me is, what are we willing to fight for? What is important enough to you that it is worth the fight? What about your soul, your children, your family, your local congregation? I understand the danger of drawing conclusions using vague Bible passages. However, it seems to me that God has given the devil greater power at various times throughout history. I know from Job 1-2 that the Lord loosened the devil's leash, so to speak, so that he could do damage to Job. The Lord said to the apostle Peter, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded per-mission to sift you like wheat” (Luke 22:31). Perhaps we are living during one of those times when the Lord has unleashed the devil. Think about it. Think about all the crazy things that are happening in America: the breakdown of the home and the stripping away of Christian morals that were the foundation of our society. The institution of marriage has been perverted, the intimacy of sex has been lost and is now treated as common. A commitment to the truth revealed in God’s Word has certainly declined. The Bible does not seem to be that important, even among some who claim to be Christians and members of the Lord’s Church. I could go on, but that would be superfluous. Thus, if we are going to save our children, we must be willing to fight the good fight of faith. If we are going to save our families, we must be willing to fight the good fight of faith. If we are going to save our local congregations, we must be willing to fight the good fight of faith. If we are going to save our souls, we must be willing to fight the good fight of faith. In conclusion, think about this: which congregations of the churches of Christ will prosper, and which ones will decline? The answer to that question is complicated because many varia-bles must be considered, such as location and the economy. Something else that will factor into the equation will be how com-mitted are the members of a local church and how willing they are to fight for it. Just as the odds were stacked against David when facing the giant, local congregations of the church today will con-tinue to struggle because the devil is working full time to hinder them. Yet, like David who was willing to fight, we too will be victo-rious if we are willing to continue the fight.
