Hello neighbors. I’m John DeHaven, the new
president of the Driftwood Park Civic Association,
(D.P.C.A.). Since the last issue of Bark was
published, the D.P.C.A. has undergone some changes.
Some of the same board members have stayed on the board, while some new faces have been added. Please see the new
board member list on the last page of this issue of Bark. We all want to thank the outgoing members for their time,
devotion and guidance.
FINALLY! The
Jumonville house on 50
Grenada has been
demolished after twenty
years. Many of us have
raised our children in the
shadow of this blighted
house. Everyone’s
property values have suffered because of situations like this one. Please, let’s all keep our houses up to City codes going
forward. A big thank you goes out to all the past and present administrations in Kenner for staying the course to bring
an end to this problem.
There’s a new organization in the City. It is the Civic League of Kenner. Its members include representatives from
every civic association in Kenner and will speak as one strong voice to the City administration regarding not only
Driftwood’s quality of life but for all the residents of Kenner. Marie Celsi is the founder and president of the new Civic
League. Marie has lived in Kenner for most of her life and has an insurance business in town. She can be reached at 504
-450-1128.
The Halloween Spook/to/do is scheduled for
October 31, 2014 at the Country Club.
Refreshments will be served and there will be
prizes for the best costumes in different age
categories.
Speeding and running stop signs, an
ongoing problem, continues in the
neighborhood. Please slow down and respect
your neighborhood.
It’s time to reregister for the Do Not Call list.
The number to call is: 888-382-1222. This
list applies to both land lines and cell phones.
If any Board Member can be of any assistance, please
do not hesitate to call or email any one of us.
Thank you,
John DeHaven

The talk of the town recently was the demolition of the
Jumonville house at 50 Granada. So many of you have
been waiting some 20 plus years for this property to be
demolished and I am happy to say that our persistence has
paid off. I promised you during my campaign that blighted
properties was something I was going to work on diligently
and I am happy to report that the four-plex at 3665
Martinique will be coming down the middle of October.
A new drain has been installed at Bahama and W.
Esplanade to help ease water ponding in that area during a
rainstorm and drainage and street repairs on Madera Court
are in full swing. The lift station improvement project at
Granada and Martinique is nearing completion as well.
The City of Kenner has a new app for your smart phone. The download is free and available on the cities website at
http://www.kenner.la.us/
I would like to welcome D & D Creations to its new home at 3611 Florida Avenue in district 3 and kudos to the All
Star Lanes and Wendys for their beautiful renovations and investment in our community.
Please follow the exciting improvements being done in our subdivision and our district and to sign up for my
monthly electronic newsletter by “liking” our facebook page facebook.com/kennerdistrict3.
As always if you need assistance at any time, please do not hesitate to call Darilyn or me at the council office.
From my family to yours I would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!
God Bless,
Keith Reynaud

Driftwood’s Literary Society met at the home of Wanda Schenwerk on Tuesday, Sept 9th to discuss the
fictional novel Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. It was a New York Times best seller. This tear jerker is
about a 26 year old woman who loses her job, when the cafe where she works, closes unexpectedly. She
finds employment as a companion for a rich quadriplegic man who is depressed about his condition
and has no will to live. We all loved the novel and were invested
in the fascinating characters.
August 12th, our book club met at Chateau Cafe to discuss a historical fiction, based on facts, during the
Revolutionary War.. The Traitor's Wife, by Allison Pataki. It was the fascinating story of Benedict
Arnold and the part his beautiful wife, Peggy Shippen Arnold, played in his defection. It was a riveting
novel of the couple, how they met, the schemes and they pulled to benefit themselves. We thought it
was one of the best novels we had read and was full on intrigue
and multidimensional characters. Pataki lived across the street from a sign which read, "Arnold's
Flight," and after seeing the sign for a long time, decided she must research the history behind the sign.
And as we know, history, is always stranger than fiction.
October 14th, we will meet at the home of Jan
Bagwell to discuss Kristin Hannah's fictional
novel, Night Road. If you would like to join
our book club, feel free to email me, Annie P,
at [email protected] or call 443-1571.

Galatas playground, located in the heart of Driftwood, offers
many sports and activities. But more than that, it provides a
great place for family bonding. Whether family is sitting in
the stands cheering on the team, playing as teammates, or
coaching, it is all about family and friends. For several
years, William Sanders and his father John have spent a lot
of time together at Galatas.
Coach John Sanders began coaching Galatas Baseball when
Will was 9. In 2012 he joined John Louis to help coach
football. John has also coached Will’s Galatas Basketball
team. Growing up, John was very involved in sports. He
was thrilled to see his son pursue and excel in sports. Seeing his son’s enthusiasm prompted John to coach.
William, 7th grade honors student at John Quincy Adams Middle School, loves sports. He spent time as a
Shark on DPCC’s swim team. At Galatas, he’s been on 3 City Championship teams, two years in Baseball and
one year playing Basketball. Although he is one of the smallest players on the team, he is currently the starting
Quarterback for the 2014 Galatas Chargers 11-12 year old undefeated football team.
John reflects that “Galatas has become a 2nd home for William, I and hundreds of Driftwood Park children over
the years. Mr. Johnny, Mr. Lloyd and Mrs. Jackie have created a welcome atmosphere at Galatas where
families can enjoy friendly competition in basketball, volleyball, baseball, football, softball and cheer. Their
baseball park is envied by coaches throughout south Louisiana.” “Both Galatas and DPCC have great programs
and opportunities for families to become closer through sports. So get involved!”
William loves playing at Galatas because it is close and his teammates are in the neighborhood. “I love
everything in our neighborhood! I can go 2 blocks and swim, play baseball, soccer, basketball or just hang with
my friends at the park!” As for being coached by his dad, he sees his dad as just another coach when they step
onto the field. “He treats me like everybody else.” William loves the close friendships that he has made
through Galatas sports. “Everyone is family and we all have a lot of fun playing football together.”

Dear Driftwood Residents,
Many of you may not realize that you have a local, independent pharmacy in your own neighborhood. The pharmacy
has undergone an ownership change in the last year and we have made many necessary changes to improve the services
that customers and patients require of a full-service pharmacy.
I would like to tell you a little about myself. My name is Paul Matar. I have strong ties to Kenner and have lived here
most of my life. I attended Xavier University and worked in the community pharmacy setting with the Big Box chains
most of my career. I felt that a change to independent pharmacy would allow me to give that personalized service that
patients deserve from their pharmacist. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to practice pharmacy in Kenner and for
the Driftwood community. I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know many of you and look forward to serving
the Driftwood Community for many years.
I welcome you to stop by and meet me and the All Saints staff and let us answer any questions or help with all of your
healthcare needs. We offer free delivery, accept most insurance plans, have a full line of OTC products, special orders
with next day delivery in most cases, Medicare enrollment tools, immunizations, MTM services and now Compounding
specialty medications just to name a few.
Sincerely,
Paul Matar
