BEATIFICATION MIRACLE FOR POPE

JOHN PAUL I

On October 13th of this year, (and on the 104th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at

Fatima, Portugal, in 1917) Pope Francis officially recognized the miraculous healing of an 11-year-old Argentinian girl in 2011 as a miracle to be attributed to the intercession of Pope John Paul I, the “September Pope”, who reigned for only 33 days from the end of August to his sudden death on September 28th, 1978.

The details of this miraculous healing are stunning, as recounted in a CNA (Catholic News Agency article) by Courtney Mares (October 13, 2021). The case involves an 11-year-old girl, Candela Giarda, who was brought to a Buenos Aires hospital with brain dysfunction and septic shock in the midst of uncontrollable seizures. Only four months earlier the girl had fallen sick with what would eventually be diagnosed as Febrile-Infection Related Epilepsy Syndrome. The doctors in Buenos Aires told her mother that there was nothing more they could do for her and that she was dying.

In great distress, the mother went to pray at a church where she encountered a priest, Fr. José Debusti, who came to pray at the girl’s bedside on July 22nd, 2011. He proposed to the mother that they pray exclusively to the Servant of God John Paul I for a miracle. The nursing staff in the intensive care unit also joined their prayers to the intercession of John Paul I. On July 23rd, the girl’s condition began to improve. Two weeks later the girl was extubated. On August 25th, her status epilepticus was resolved. On September 5th, she was discharged from the hospital. Fr. Debusti reported the apparent miracle to the Vatican and wrote everything down in detail. His Archbishop was Jorge Bergoglio, now reigning as Pope Francis.

Pastor’s Note

Today Candela Giarda is 21-years-old and pursuing a veterinary degree. She is not currently taking any medications.

Given the concrete details of a dramatic miraculous healing it was jarring, to say the least, to see in last week’s Pilot a CNS (Catholic News Service) article on Pope John Paul I’s impending beatification with the cynical title: “Saintly Popes: People Question Whether Canonizing Popes Is a Good Idea.” No details of the actual miracle officially recognized after due investigation were offered. Instead, a professor at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, who self-importantly re-tweeted a link to a blog he had written in 2019 questioning the wisdom of modern papal canonizations, was cited as an authority.

Oh, no! Are we now going to have to discount solid evidence of the heavenly intercession of deceased Popes because we have to impose quotas—only so many Popes can be raised to the altars in one time period? No more than one Pope-Saint per century maybe? I hope not.

One of the hall-marks of the long papacy of John Paul II, John Paul I’s immediate successor, was the willingness to break conventions on the processes of beatification and sanctification and affirm what the evidence clearly shows: that God is indeed superabundant in making saints for Heaven, and not just Popes, but people from all walks of life and conditions.
