VOLUME 45 NO. 4 MARCH / APRIL 2017
Franklin County Art Alliance Officers: President: Arlene Babb Treasurer: Dawn Burgoon Vice-President: Dee Henry Secretary: Penny Durbin
Meetings The Alliance’s March meeting will be held on Saturday, March 11, 1-3pm (12:30 social time) at Grove Family Library (101 Ragged Edge Road South). The business meeting will begin at 1pm and the program will follow, and featuring a demonstration of landscape painting in oils by artist Paul Gallo.
Plein air oil painting is Paul Gallo’s primary area of interest; painting in a representational manner, he enjoys utilizing the tactical quality of oil paints. His education includes studying at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and earning an associate’s degree from Harrisburg Area Community College and an MFA from Syracuse University. He currently teaches illustration, drawing and painting at Art Institute of York and Harrisburg Area Communi-ty College.
The Alliance’s April meeting will be held on Wednesday April 12, 7-9pm (6:30 social time) at Grove Family Library (101 Ragged Edge Road South). The business meeting will begin at 7pm and the program will follow, featur-ing a demonstration of abstract underpainting techniques by Becky Myers.
“I begin with a solid layer of color or colors and apply additional color lay-ers, texturizing each layer,” explains Myers. “The sun and temperature of the day influence the results of the textured layers. I use a variety of mate-rials in the process, and the result is always a surprise!” Myers’ paintings often feature organic forms that have interesting textures and rhythmic patterns, with reptiles and jellyfish being particular favorites. Born and raised in Arlington, Virginia, Becky spent many Saturdays at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. She earned her B.A. in Studio Art from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD; Art Education Certification from Millersville University, Millersville, PA; a Master of Science Degree in Communication/Journalism from Shippensburg University; and studied various media at Philadelphia’s University of the ARTs, including jewelry design, printmaking and sculpture/casting. Since retiring from a career in art education, Rebecca has concentrated on painting and mixed media investigations.
FCAA Annual Exhibit The Alliance’s 46th annual membership show will be held June-2-8 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 150 Norlo Drive, Fayetteville, with our opening reception Sunday June 4, 2-5 PM, and show hours continuing Mon.-Thurs. June 5-8, 2-7 PM. Entries must be mailed by Monday April 17; entries sent after that will be subject to a $10 late fee (a policy voted on by the Board in January 2014). All entries must be the artist’s original creation, not a copy of another artist’s work.
A feature of our show is the Franklin County Art Alliance Membership Award, started in 2015. This award will be fund-ed by contributions from our members - see the membership form on the last page: you can donate even if you’re al-ready paid your dues!—and we will take donations at the refreshment table at our meetings. The award-winning work will be chosen by our judges, selecting an outstanding piece in any category they choose.
Our annual show requires many volunteers, so we really hope that all members will pitch in; sign-up sheets will be passed around at upcoming meetings, but if you can’t get to the meeting, please call Anne Finucane at 267-1396 to volunteer. We need help with setting up the show, receiving paintings, hanging, and in particular, sitting with the show during our open hours Monday through Thursday. We always have a great turnout at the opening reception, with a beautiful tea coordinated by Brandii Kligge, and that takes lots of volunteers, too.
All members will be contacted by our telephone committee, for contributions to the tea. Our shows are always great – let’s keep up that tradition!

Using Colored Pencils on Black Surfaces Instructor: Amy Lindenberger
Colored pencil drawings are traditionally used on white or light, neutral-colored papers. But some subjects are much more
effective against very dark backgrounds, and those backgrounds can be difficult (and labor-intensive) to cover with a trans-
parent medium like colored pencil. In this class we’ll explore key techniques for using colored pencil on black and very dark-
colored surfaces, to keep colors true and luminous. (Call for materials list) Price: $85 for 2-week session
Dates: Fridays, March 3 & 10, 10am-3 pm
The Art of Paper Quilting Instructor: Liz Goins
Following the example of artist Bridget Hoff, students will evoke the beauty of quilting using designs crafted with paper instead
of fabric. Make the pieces even more special with collages of paper and found objects that enhance the embroidery in love-
ly and unique ways. A great class for quilters and visual artists alike. Minimal sewing experience needed, just a willingness to
experiment and have fun. Materials fee $20 payable to instructor. Price: $35 for one-day workshop
Date: Friday March 17, 10am-3pm
Suminogashi and Japanese Stab Book Binding Instructor: Kate Reynolds
Make a traditional Japanese stab bound book featuring beautiful paper that you will hand-marble yourself! You’ll learn the
basic techniques of paper marbling, plus book-binding in a Japanese style, including working with sewing templates, sewing
with waxed linen thread and preparing the book block and making a hinged cover. This is a simple but versatile structure to
add to your binding repertoire. Each student will leave with a hinged hardcover bound book and the skills to create more
hand-bound books. The class will offer the opportunity to view and handle a collection of professionally made examples.
Class limit 7; beginners welcome. Please bring a lunch! Price: $45 for the one-day workshop,
Date: Friday, April 7, 10:30am-4:30pm plus $20 materials fee payable to instructor
Soft Focus Landscapes on Claybord Instructor: Amy Lindenberger
Colored pencil is known for being very detail-oriented, but not so much for its painterly qualities. Amy will have some new
techniques to share, with this method that uses powdered graphite, followed by layers of colored pencil, graphite and sol-
vent, to create a finished product with the look of a painting that can be varnished and framed without glass! More experi-
enced students can work on their own projects in an open studio setting with Amy’s instruction and advice. Call for materials
list. Price: $85 for 2-week session
Dates: Fridays April 21 & 28, 10am-3pm
Make It- Take It Flower Drawing Instructor: Barbara Petrucci
Learn how to beautifully shade a flower in powdered graphite from a selection of new flower drawings that Barb will have
ready for you. Bring a lunch! Kit: $9 payable to teacher. If you already have Barb's kit, then there is just a $1 fee for paper.

Watercolor Batik Workshop Instructor: Debbie Strand-Miller
Debbie will be teaching a batik process on Ginwashi rice paper, where students will learn how to create a painting using hot
wax and watercolors. Batik is a term that refers to using wax as a resist; wherever the wax is placed, paint can no longer enter
the paper. This class requires a basic understanding of watercolors; students should bring basic watercolor supplies and
lunch. Please call for a supply list. Material fee $10 payable to instructor. Price: $45 for one-day workshop
Date: Friday May 19, 10am-4pm
