The Cass County Extension Office is closed to the public. We are here, but our doors are locked until further

notice. If you have questions or need any assistance, please call our office at 712-243-1132 or email Shelby

at [email protected]. We encourage you to visit our website (www.extension.iastate.edu/cass) or

Facebook page, as we will be updating both regularly with program updates and resources.

As of today (5/1) at 12 PM this newsletter has the most current information available. Things are changing

rapidly as you all are aware. Please note that email is our current form of updated communication. If your

email is incorrect or you would like mailed updates please contact Shelby at the Extension Office. Thank

you for your understanding in this unprecedented time.

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals or YQCA Training replaces FSQA Training and is required for all (FFA

and 4-H members) who wish to exhibit livestock at the Cass County Fair and at the Iowa State Fair. There

will be two options for training this year.

Face-to-Face: A face-to-face training will be held on June 25th from 10 AM-12 PM at the Cass County

Community Center for all 4th-12th graders. There will be no fee for youth participating in this training. The

$3 per child cost has been covered by the Cass County Extension Council.

A second training will be offered June 25 from 1-4 PM for 4th-6th graders only. This camp will be a hands

on day camp format. There is a $5 per youth attendee fee. Contact the Extension Office to register. 4-H

members who attend will receive 1 year of YQCA certification for attending. An RSVP is required to attend.

Contact the Extension Office for more information and to register by June 19. Also open to non-4-H youth

interested in learning more about livestock.

Online Training: Trainings may also be completed online via the YQCA website. The online training will cost

$12 per member completing the training. We strongly encourage youth to take the online training this year.

Members must sign into https://yqca.learngrow.io/ using their 4hOnline credentials. You will select the

training based upon the age you will be in 2020. For example, if your birthday is on March 10th and you will

be turning 14, please take the training for 14 year-olds. Even if your birthday is after County Fair, please

take the training for the age that you will become in 2020. Each training lists an age group (Junior,

Intermediate, Senior) after the ages, take the training based upon your age as of December 31, 2020 even if

the training group listed is incorrect. The online trainings must be completed before July 1, 2020 in order to

be eligible to participate in the Cass County Fair!

All junior level members (4th – 6th graders) must complete some form of training this year. You may only try

to test out once per age group and the test out must be completed online. You may attempt the test at the

age of 12 for the Intermediate Level and then again at age 15 for the Senior Level. Testing out costs $36 for

the 12 year-old tests and $48 for the 15 year-olds test. Do not fret if you don’t pass the test. You will only be

charged $12 for the online training for your current age group. This is a new process and format, so please

contact Shelby at the Extension Office if you have any questions.

The livestock ID Deadline has been extended from

May 15 to June 1. Please remember, all non-

market animals (dairy, dairy goat, breeding

beef, horses, dogs) must be identified in 4-H

Online by June 1 to exhibit at county fair and state

fair. All paper ID forms must be turned into the

Extension Office by Monday, June 1 at 4:30 PM.

As always, 4-H animals can be entered in 4-H

Online until 11:59 PM on June 1. We encourage

you to take care of this before the evening of June

1, in case you run into questions or problems with

the ID system and need staff assistance.

You may add animals under each youth’s Animals

tab within their enrollment screen on 4-H Online.

The Extension staff will enter all sheep, goats, and

swine into 4-H Online; please log in to your animal

profile and verify that information is correct before

June 1. After June 1 the system does not allow

changes. The information entered into 4-H Online

will be the information used at the County Fair and

State Fair. Please contact the Extension Office if

you need assistance with ID’ing your animals or

verifying you animals in 4-H Online.

If you are interested in showing a Cow/Calf exhibit

or Feeder Calf at the 2020 Cass County Fair, you

must ID the calf by June 15. The ID area for

calves is located on the bottom of the Breeding

Beef ID form in the Cow/Calf Section.

For any questions about ID’ing an animal for

county or state fair, please contact the Extension

Office.

The Iowa 4-H State Conference on the campus of

Iowa State University June 30-July 2 is cancelled.

We want to thank the State 4-H Council, Advisors

and Volunteers for the time that they spent

planning this fun event and can’t wait for the 2021

state conference.

Looking for a way to give back to the 4-H program

and impact not only Cass County 4-H members,

but others from across Iowa? The annual 4-Her’s

for 4-H campaign is now underway. The 2019-

2020 State 4-H Council members are asking each

4-H club in Iowa to donate a minimum of $3.00

per member to the 4-Hers for 4-H campaign. All

clubs that meet the $3.00 per member goal will

receive a special campaign certificate at County

Convention. Participation is easy! Fill out the

campaign form and return it along with your

donation to the Extension Office by June 15.

Contact the Extension Office for the campaign

donation form.

While you are planning to participate in 4-Hers for

4-H, don’t forget to donate to the Cass County 4-H

Endowment! Funds in the Cass County 4-H

Endowment directly benefit youth in Cass County

to support program fees, scholarships and

leadership

opportunities.

May 15 is the last day to enroll or re-enroll in 4-H to be eligible for the 2020 fair. Each year members

are required to re-enroll. If we do not have an enrollment form or current 4-H Online profile in our office by

May 15 for a 4-H’er, they are not eligible to exhibit at County Fair. Any 4-H members on file as of May 15 will

be left on your club roster until next fall. This means they count on set-up and clean-up days at fair and we

pay the $30 Program Development fee. Club leaders can log in to their 4-H Online profile to check their club

rosters at any time. Please contact the Extension Office if you need assistance with checking your

enrollment status.

Leaders may pick up their packet materials starting June 1 at the Extension Office. Packets must be used at

June 4-H meetings to complete the participation chart and distribute fair books. Participation charts are due

June 24, all other fair entries are due July 2nd. All 4-H and FFA members must enter livestock entries

through their club or chapter. All other activities you will be able to enter individually at the Extension Office.

Your leader will have those forms as well, and they will be posted to our website as available.

To help create a more balanced Static Judging Day schedule, clubs will again be asked to share an

estimated number of exhibits by June 24. To prepare for your May and/or June 4-H meetings, 4-Hers are

asked to give an estimated number of static exhibits they plan to bring to County Fair. This doesn’t require

you to bring that number of projects, but this will help us create the Static Exhibit Judging schedule as well

as make sure we have enough judges in each exhibit area. The exhibit judging schedule will be shared in the

County Fair announcements and with the 4-H club leaders. Thank you for your cooperation while we work to

improve the Static Judging process!

Join us on May 7 at 6 PM for a Virtual Photography Workshop. If you are interested in participating please

email Shelby at [email protected] to be added to the zoom link. This is a great opportunity to chat with a

county fair judge about what all goes into the Photography project area.

Join Shelby on May 20 for a Virtual Record Keeping Workshop. NEW! for 2020 we have updated and

changed scoring for the record book. We have also added additional opportunities for our youth to be

recognized for their hard work. We will go over the changes and also have time for Q/A. Now is a perfect

time to be working on your record book and be thinking about fair projects. We will also discuss more in

depth a project vs. exhibit. To register email [email protected] or call the office at 712-243-1132.

We were contacted by Guthrie Grove Retreat Center in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. All groups attending the camp through the month of June have been cancelled. Due to this news, we unfortunately have to cancel Camp Wild.

I want to thank those who have spent time planning and those who were willing to volunteer at camp. We look forward to next year, we have a great template to follow!

It will be here before we know it, mark your calendars for the 2020 Cass County Fair, July 22-July 28. We

have had many question about fair and at this time we are still planning fair as usual. If changes occur we

will be in contact with you as soon as information becomes available. We have the youth’s best interest in

mind and will be doing everything possible to make sure they get to showcase their projects in someway or

another. The Fairboard and Extension Staff are excited for another great County Fair! Keep an eye out in the

upcoming 4-H newsletters for exhibit information, updated schedule, tips and important messages. Printed

fairbooks with the final schedule will be available to families in late May with an electronic version posted

online sooner. We hope you are excited to make the 2020 Cass County Fair the best one yet!

Are you or someone you know interested in recognizing our 4-Hers for their great accomplishments at the

County Fair? Consider sponsoring a trophy that is presented to our exhibitors at the shows and events. We

have a few available trophies in many departments. Please contact the Extension Office if you would like to

check on available trophies and sponsor a trophy for the 2020 Cass County Fair.

Buckets are available for pick up at the Extension Office. Buckets are available and include unique metal

pieces to create a masterpiece by July 22. Participants can clean, weld, cut, fasten, bolt, etc. their items

together to create their final product. Please call ahead to arrange a pickup time.

Items to remember: dogs must be ID’d by June 1. This can be done in 4-H online or on paper copies turned

into the Extension Office. Dogs must have a DHL shot (distemper, hepatitis and lepto) and rabies shot. You

must bring a copy of those paper to the first training to be eligible to participate. Dogs must have a proper

fitting collar (leather or nylon buckle or collar or training collar with chain) and a 6 foot leather or nylon leash.

Please make sure you are signed up for the dog project in 4-H online, as this is how we get information to all

dog project members. If you need help contact Shelby at the Extension Office.

Information regarding dog workouts will become available as soon as we are able to do so. In the meantime,

practice every day for a minimum of 30 minutes, never let your dog make a mistake without correcting the

dog, always praise your dog, and practice in different places with different noises and smells.

Check out this website to learn more about training your dog! https://4-h.org/parents/curriculum/dog/#!canine

Just a helpful reminder for those of you who are getting a head start on your 4-H projects and exhibits for the

summer. In our Record Keeping Workshop we will discuss the difference between projects and exhibits but

here is also a helpful comparison. If you have questions please reach out to your 4-H leader or Shelby as we
