37th annual SAC. JAZZ FESTIVAL & JUBILEEMay 28–31, 2010 – Memorial Day Wknd.

I .can’t believe how fast the time .is .flying toward our 37th Sacramento

Jazz Festival & Jubilee. As you can imagine, there’s a flurry of activity in the office. Greg Willet is finalizing sponsor agreements and assisting with many other tasks relating to the money side of our organization. He will be overseeing the various donor programs such as Boosters, Friends of STJS, donations to the various youth education programs, and oversee-ing the group sales efforts for the festival. He’s so competent; we just can’t seem to stop giving him extra work to do!

John Cocuzzi has finalized the con-tracting process and is busy working with Vince Bartels on the scheduling. It’s a daunting task and one that requires a lot of concentration trying to fit the appropriate bands for each venue.

Scott Kaufman, our Marketing Director, is busy working on the pro-gram and all the other little details of our marketing and PR efforts. Watch for an STJS presence at Second Saturdays in March, April and May. If you haven’t already done so, please check out the festival Facebook page and festival webpage at www.sacjazz.com/

On another note, the Board of Directors attended a retreat on Saturday, February 6,. Drexel University is one of our sponsors for this year’s festival and kindly donated use of their facility for our retreat. One of the outcomes was the recognition that we need a Volunteer Coordinator to develop a pool of volunteers as resources, including folks to help get the word out—in a variety of ways and at a variety of places—about our festival and other programs. This posi-tion would take a few hours each week at the office, and require knowledge of the various jobs in our organization. If this sounds like a job you might be interested in, please give me a call at the office.

As I hear more about local schools cutting or eliminating music programs, it seems critical that we treasure and support our jazz education programs. Currently, we have auditions for Music Lesson Awards on March 6, weekly rehearsals for TNT, and applications for Jazz Camp coming in. Our youth performers at Jazz Sunday are getting better and better. If you love this music, please consider donating to our youth pro-grams. I make a small monthly donation ($10) to both KVIE and Capital Public Radio on my credit card, and I don’t miss it at all—but they truly appreciate it. 2

President’s Messageby Jim Roberson STJS . PRESIDENT

JAZZ ME! This is an exciting time of year. It is a new year and we are very active at STJS. In January, we enjoyed a

wonderfully successful Crab Feed thanks to organizer Paula Vance and her crew, and in February, we were treated to a fabulous Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival at Sacramento State followed by a great Jazz Sunday event featuring jazz ras-cals Bob Draga, Jason Wanner and “Fast Eddie” Erickson. These guys were all involved in the youth festival and do tire-less work for jazz education. Congratulations to Yvonne Au and all her musicians and volunteers.

Sad news…we lost two of our Jazz Emperors, Jake Hanna and Tom Saunders. Both of these men devoted many years to our festival. Tom will be remembered for his music and his finely tuned sense of humor. Jake was one of the world’s great-est drummers. Jake and I met when I was 18 years old, and I have written here about what a wonderful heart he had and what he did for young people. Bob, Jason and Eddie played “Amazing Grace” in an unforgettable tribute. God bless Tommy and Jake, and their families.

Better news…thank you all for keeping Roger Krum in your thoughts and prayers. Roger went through a difficult surgery and is involved in a slow recovery. Keep sending out good vibes for Roger and his family.

JAZZ ME! For most of us, it’s all about the music. I rec-ommend a healthy dose of jazz therapy to all of our musician members…show up at Jazz Sunday and blow!

I joined STJS to make friends and play music. I had been to the adult Jazz Camp and when I moved back to California, I knew that this was the place to be to have maximum fun play-ing music with people I like. I also love to listen to great music, and STJS really fills the bill on that front. JAZZ ME! “A can a week is all I ask,” as they say on TV.

As your president, trying to keep this STJS boat afloat and put on a great festival takes up a lot of time and concentration doing things other than playing and listening to music, so this is a good time to remind myself and all of you, my friends, why we are involved and so committed to STJS. We love the music; we love playing it…we love listening to it…we love dancing to it. Jazz music is a totally joyful experience. A pianist friend of mine once told me, “a life without music is an incomplete life.” So, let’s all make sure we stop, smell the coffee and enjoy the music. JAZZ ME…and help make our lives complete.

Where Have the Years Gone?by Ron Swehla STJS .HISTORIAN

As you’ve probably figured out, I get most of my ideas for this column by reading old copies of “And All That Jazz.”

We have at least one copy of each issue of our amazing and informative newsletter that we have ever published. The format started as a one-page, two-sided, typed (no computers in those days) handout that gradually evolved into a newspaper-style format, finally resulting in its present 16-page format.

The early newspaper style, while probably expensive to pro-duce, was very informative with its great long articles. Mary and Frank Bragg were feature writers (there was a “Cricket” then also) and always wrote informative, entertaining articles. In February 1980, the Braggs were wrote about a new tradition that I wish we still did today: the 1980 Midwinter Warm-up held at the Roseville Fairgrounds. The event had performances in four halls, with 14 bands performing to an overflow crowd: the Dix-ieland Delinquents (a youth group), Oregon Jazz Band, Dix-ieland, Inc. (featuring the work of 73-year-old Edna Lewis on sax), South Frisco Jazz Band, and Fulton Street Jazz Band, with Jack Gumbiner filling in for Bob Ringwald, who was unable to make it up from his then home in Southern California.

Other bands featured were the Riverbank Blues Band with visitor Brian Richardson sitting-in on trombone, the Tule-burg Jazz Band out of Stockton, CA, and the still-favorite High Sierra Jazz Band that wowed the crowd with a barn-burner rendition of “They Kicked Him Out of Heaven (‘Cause He Wasn’t Going to Join the Band”). Gene Berthelsen led his new band, the Cats ‘n Jammers, and added to the interest by playing some older, obscure tunes. Rounding out the festival were: the Natural Gas band from Marin County, Swanee’s Swingers led by Hal Swan, the Royal Society Jazz Orches-tra, and the Desert City Six with members of the Jazzin’ Babies sitting-in with the normal Phoenix, Arizona-based crew. All in all, it must have been a swinging affair. Memories. Don’t you wish we could recreate those days! 2

Hodges (cont.)known works by Scott Joplin, James Scott, George L. Cobb and Charley Straight.

His distinguished discography, mainly on Stomp Off and Aristophone Records, includes piano works by Lucky Roberts, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Phil Ohman, Arthur Schutt, and Scott Joplin.

Frederick Hodges is a native of California, where he began his piano studies at age eight. At thirteen, he began intense classical piano study with two famed San Francisco Bay Area piano teachers who were both graduates of the Juilliard School of Music: Virginia Moore and Trula Whelan. At age seventeen, he won the prestigious Music Teachers of California Young Artist Award. At twenty, while still an undergraduate at the UC Berkeley, he joined the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra as pianist. Since then, he has toured extensively. Frederick has enjoyed a career playing solo piano for society parties and holding down steady engagements at legendary San Fran-cisco establishments such as L’Etoile in the Huntington Hotel, Masons in the Fairmont Hotel, and the Ritz Carlton Hotel.

In 2001, Frederick earned a doctorate in history from Oxford University in England, where he lived for five years. He has participated in many prestigious festivals including the Sacra-

TJYBF 2010 was “E”xcellent!

by Judy Hendricks STJS .VOLUNTEER

Dr. Steve Roach and Yvonne Au, and all their extended TJYBF Com-mittees managed to top last year...and then some. This entailed rolling with some punches (last minute can-cellation balanced by last

minute application), but the result was stellar. We had bands from the East Bay Trad Jazz Society, Basin Street Regulars, Brigham Young University, Sac State University, TRAD-JASS Club of Santa Rosa, Fremont Christian HS, as well as local bands directed by Celia Cottle, Polly Edgerton, Feli-cia Greenwood, Nancy Kreis, Harley White, Jr., and Jack Mootz. Our own TNT, directed by Nahum Zdybel, was the host band.

This year, rather than instrument clinics, there were two instructional seminars. ........The morning seminar by David Robinson of TJEN (Trad Jazz Edu-cators Network) was a well–illustrated and fascinating presenta-tion explaining the variety of “Styles of Traditional Jazz.” Then in the afternoon, Bob Draga and Bill Dendle, aided and abetted by the Clinicians Band, lectured on the “E” Factor: How to Excite, Energize and Engage your audience —and if ever there wasa perfect example of those principles, it would be Bob and Bill (with a little help from their friends).

Lunchtime Pizza ‘n’ Jazz included a concert with young musicians sitting-in or replacing various clinicians. The stu-dents were avowedly nervous, but they played like pros!

What a long day! The first bands were scheduled for warm-up at 7:30 am, and events finally wound down at 8:30 pm. It is wonderful to watch these young people perform, and wonder-ful to watch the feedback clinicians work with them immedi-ately afterward. Clearly, one of the keys to our success is the caliber of feedback clinicians, lead sheet clinicians and adjudi-cators we have invited to the festival.

Every student was on the edge of their seat waiting for pre-sentation of awards and scholarships, and listening for which

bands had earned “encore performances.” Those selected in each division: The Jazzers (Middle School); Dixie Dominus (High School); and BYU (College). TJYBF was previously changed from a competition to an academic festival, but there is still pride of place for every one of the young musicians.

One of the nicest events didn’t take place on the public s tage. Lauralee Humes has awarded several scholarships since the very first TJYBF, in honor of her father, reed player and educa-tor Kenton O. Smith. Several of the schol-arships have gone to the talented young musicians from Brigham Young University’s Jazz Legacy. Director Steve Call told Ms. Humes that the Music Department would like to fly her to Provo and host her at a dinner in her honor, with all the scholarship recipients in attendance. What a lovely gesture!

The Clinicians Band then tore into what was billed as a Hot Jazz Dance Concert—there is so much space on the Music Recital Hall Stage the Committee thought it would be great to fill it with dancers. A few things limited the on-stage participa-tion: There was a Swing Dance elsewhere that evening; and then there’s the difficulty of observing the dictum, “dance like nobody’s watching” (with video cameras no less). But it sure was fun to watch those who did dance, and to listen to the great musicians. Bill Dendle and Eddie Erickson were dazzling and daffy on “Dueling Banjos”—those guys are soul mates.

Jason Wanner sat down and talked turkey to the students. His bottom line: bands can’t be “termed out” when they reach some certain age. There has to be some way to transition from youth to “regular” status with-out being dropped from the circuit (a wise mes-sage for all producers of jazz festivals world-wide). Finally, students were invited up—come one, come all—for the last number. A great time was had by all. Job well done all around.

Worth noting: RedSkunk Jipzee Swing already has two CDs available. The Jazzers and the Jazz Raptors are piloting a Trad Jazz Curriculum Kit for David Robinson, and Polly Edgerton is guiding them in making their own arrangements. The East Bay Jazzinators I and II play a regular gig and host two jazz youth band festivals per year. Just a few examples of the talent and dedi-cation found here at the TJYBF. 2

8 March 2010

Headline: “Huge Crowd Gets Huge Kick from Guest Stars!!! All Day!!!” Really, we had more fun than you could shake a

stick at—mostly because there wasn’t room to shake any sticks. We had all seats filled and people leaning against every wall. Didn’t stop the dancers from shaking everything, though, because every band was fab-uuuu-lus!

We started with the aromatically-named RedSkunk Jipzee Swing Band from San Luis Obispo: leader Molly Reeves on guitar and vocals; Sam Boorman on guitar; Justin Au, trum-pet; Mitch Houseman, bass; and Ken Davis on drums. Violinist Pamela Scheffler couldn’t attend. They were one of the hot bands at TJYBF the day before, and they didn’t disappoint on the day. I don’t think the dance floor ever cleared off.

Set 2: Draga/Wanner/Erickson (with Lenny Pollacchi and Ron Jones) were exactly what the crowd came to hear. Words fail me, but never fail Draga; he draws crowds equally for his repartee as for his playing. They were joined on Set 4 by Justin Au on trumpet, Bill Dendle on trombone and Howard Miyata on tuba. Again with the

jokes... Because it was Valentine’s Day, Bob asked how many in the crowd had been married for 60 years or more—there were at least 5 couples—and then pointed out that staying married that long is like living in California—if you find a fault, don’t dwell on it!

Barbara Schonborn from Mountain View said she played clari-net in high school, and she was just blown away by how long Bob Draga could hold a note. Barbara is a friend of Joan Davison and Jim Scheer, who played banjo in the same high school band. They’re in the Over-the-Hill Gang, now. Between the guest stars’ two sets, we had a surprise visit from Terrie Richards. She was scheduled to be backed by Tom Shove, Lenny Pollacchi and Vince Bartels, and then was also joined by Eddie Erickson. Eddie & Terrie gave us a beautiful, beautiful render-ing of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” Terrie planned to stay for the whole meeting, but instead found flew to Los Angeles when she learned that Jake Hanna’s widow, Denisa, would be all alone until the next day. A kind act typical of Bill and Ellie’s kids. Terrie’s brother, Chris, was there with their grandmother, Ida Eisenbraun (Bill’s mother), who was certainly enjoying Terrie’s set. Paulette McDonald said her friend, Jerry Hull, had given up his seat so Mrs. Eisenbraun could sit close to the stage. Another kind act, typical of our jazz crowd.

The final set on the Main Stage was The New Traditionalists, (TNT) our own standard bearers. Nahum Zdybel has only been

working with them for a couple of months, but we could see the improvement just since the Crab Feed (yummy in my tummy). Nick Niebank, trumpet; Bryce Korte, reeds (he also composes); Kayla Youngblood, piano; Gabe Fannon, banjo; Bry Peterson, bass; and Rose Cangelosi, drums. Patty Wassum is their band manager. TNT members were also waiters at the Crab Feed, and band hosts at the TJYBF, in addition to playing the last set. Good work, gang!

Draga/Wanner/Erickson did have the effect of reducing the crowds in the other two performance stages, but the sets were still good. See page 12 for names of musicians who played in each room. Surprisingly, there was no Set 5 in the Tailgate—Karl Munz showed up to sing but he was unaccompanied. By the end of the set, however, singer Claude Purcell and violinist Tom Gunterman had created their own set. Tom then joined the band for Set 6, and THEN they were joined by Bob Draga. Finally, a big crowd in the Tailgate—until those mean Sound people made them stop so the equipment could be broken down. Ron Jones was about to put a hammerlock on Draga to get him away for dinner. Still, it was a wowser while it lasted!

Violinist Tom Gunterman was here last month but there were no jam sets at the Rent Party. He was at the Elks about 24 years ago and remembers going into the woodshed room, kind of new and nervous, and being welcomed very kindly by a musician named Red—that kindness thing again.

Pretty much the same story about a small audience in the Gold Card Room—and the same swinging success with the music. See page 12 for musicians. There certainly was a crowd for GCR Set 3 with a string of fine vocalists. The last two sets were rockin’. The band in Set 4 invited TNT reed player Bryce Korte to sit-in. Mom Cindy said he was really pleased to be asked. Set 5 almost didn’t get off the ground—3 musicians and the sound tech—but they started playing and added musicians, and a very supportive audience, before they fin-ished. David Robinson led a hot set to end the day. TJYBF clinician Howard Miyata joined on trombone before they were done.

David Robinson flew in for the TJYBF, “and boy, are his arms tired” because FIRST he had to get OUT of Washington, D.C., buried under the worst snow storm in living history! Ned sang a couple of numbers to get the dancers in the mood, and then someone asked Scotty to sing something disgustingly sweet for Valentine’s Day, but he was recovering from laryngitis and had to decline. Vocal Set Direc-tor Paula Dula showed the holiday spirit, though—she brought red roses and Sweethearts—the “reformulated” ones. That was nice since the promised ice cream didn’t appear. (According to Elinor Hackett Leatherby’s Catering is closed until spring.)

However, we had Girl Scout Cookies, courtesy of Christine Rowe’s 8 year-old daughter, Sophia. Sophia had an order for Jim

Martinez, but Christine sold those in a flash and said she would lay in a new supply for Jim. Sophia would have been there herself, but she was afraid her mom would make her sing!

It was nice to see Aaron Higley, Sound Tech (Rtd.), in from Yuba City. Also Doris Chiroc-Chalmers and Tom Chalmers. Bill Dendle’s son, Jeremy Dendle, came from San Diego to keep Dad company while Shelley visits her daughter in Greece.

A disconcertingly grown-up Paul Doerner said he didn’t bring his banjo; he was a listener for the weekend. Elva and Tom Harais have been members for about 15 years, and have been to Monterey and Pismo festivals for the last five years.

Hah—Mabel Burhans (Able Mable of the Record Table?) was on television. Caught just the last few bars of her performance with Golden Breeze Taiko at the North Highlands Community Center Jubilee from last July when it showed up on Access Sacramento.

Deep breath: Jan Sutherland and Jerry MacKenzie will be taking their PrimeTime jazz band to the Palm Springs Clas-sic Jazz Festival over March 19, 20 and 21. That’s the weekend before Uptown Lowdown will be at the 20th Anniversary Red-wood Coast Jazz Festival in Eureka. And the same weekend as Bob and Friends will be at the Moose Lodge for the Modesto Trad Jazz Society meeting. Dixieland Monterey is celebrating its 30th Anniversary March 5, 6 and 7 and Sacramento Banjo Band will present its 50th—50th!—Banjo-Rama April 9-11.

Or head out to Straw Hat Pizza on Mather Field Road for Cocuzzi, Paulus Society Band, Bob Hirsch Trio, Ned’s Jazz Boat Shuffle, or Bill Dendle & Nahum Zdybel. Not all at once—that’s the March schedule. (See page 12 for exact dates.) 2

March 18 concert with Wycliffe Gordon

The Sacramento jazz community is proud to announce the birth of the new Sacramento Jazz Orchestra. Some of the

leading jazz performers and educators from the greater Sacra-mento area have been brought together to form this outstanding non-profit organization with a common goal of performing jazz at the highest level. The mission of the SJO is simple: Through concert performances and educational endeavors, the Sacra-mento Jazz Orchestra strives to preserve the rich heritage of jazz, nurture its growth, and encourage public appreciation of America’s indigenous music as a viable art form.

The SJO had its debut performance on Feb. 28 as part of the popular “Sunday Eve. Jazz” series organized by Vivian Lee. Their next concert will be at 8pm on Thurs., March 18, 2010. New Orleans trombonist Wycliffe Gordon is returning to Sacra-mento to appear as a featured guest with the SJO and Sac. State Jazz Ensembles at the CSUS Music Recital Hall. Some of you first saw the phenomenal Wycliffe Gordon with Ed Polcer’s All-Stars in 2008 at the TJYBF fundraiser.

Letter to the Editor Chuck McKay was VITAL to STJS in its early days. He had a zest for life and fun-loving personality that was immedi-ately apparent to all he met. His family and friends will miss his wit and one-liners. We cannot overstate his many contribu-tions to STJS in its early days. Chuck’s obituary, written by his wife and children, appeared on the front page of the Portland Oregonian on January 17, 2010, and the chapel overflowed for his memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to further Parkinson’s research. So long, Brother Chuck.
