The Golden Age So, are we in the “Golden Age” of scale plastic modeling? I remem-ber folks telling me in the mid 1980s that we were in the “Golden Age” then, what with the rise of cast-resin kits, photoetched details, and color-ful aftermarket decals. Come to think of it, we’ve probably been in the “Golden Age” every decade since. Think of it for a second: When has it been better? Certainly, the industry has changed, and with it our interests and preferences. Another thing that has changed is the prices! When I was a kid (1950s and ‘60s), plastic model airplane kits were generally a buck each. But back then the state of the art was pretty rudimentary and we got what we paid for. Now, we’re lucky to find kits under $10, and the best kits are well over $100. But we still get what we paid for (for the most part). Now we can get just about every subject we want in our fa-vorite scale (well, I’m still missing a few “most wanted,” but I think you’ll agree). Without question, some of the best kits produced throughout our “Golden Age” have been manufactured by Monogram Models Inc., late of Morton Grove, Illinois. While technically still in existence, Monogram is now part of the Revell Company, once Monogram’s staunch rival. But old kit molds seldom die, and we still can enjoy some of the kits from yesteryear. For our meeting this Friday (July 12), let’s bring in our built Monogram kits (boxtops would be nice, too) and reminisce about the good old “Golden Age.” For the August 9th meeting, we’ll have another “build it at the meet-ing/watch the experts” event. With it, we’ll have a display theme – The Korean War – as we observe (on July 27) the 60th anniversary of the armistice.

The First of July is upon us. Half of 2013 is gone.
On June 21, the longest period of daylight in the year
occurred. Now, each of our days is shorter than the
one before it. And this will continue all the way to De-
cember 21 when the hours of daylight will once again
start getting longer. Get used to it.
Our June Swap night meeting went well by all
reports. I continue to be amazed by the high level
of yakking that occurs during these less highly struc-
tured meetings. We also had a nice business meeting
on the following Wednesday eve (7 P.M.) at Baker’s
Square on S. 76th Street. You are all reminded that
the business meetings are open to all members. In
addition to all the model talk, an incentive is the FREE
PIE that comes with your meal. Several of the regular
attendees come just for the pie.
The IPMS/Region 5 Coordinator is Kelly Quirk,
[email protected] , (816) 415-9745. The IPMS/Region
5 website is: http://ipms-gateway.com/ Region5coor-
dinator.html Any IPMS/USA member who recruits a
new member will receive a one-year free membership
extension. “New” means never previously joined or
a former member who has not renewed since Sep-
tember 30, 2004. IPMS/Bong Chapter is a part of
IPMS/Region 5. To maintain our IPMS Charter, we are
required to submit an annual list of at least 5 current
IPMS National members including our chapter officers.
Thus far we have been able to submit the required
names. While National membership is not required
for club membership, all members are encouraged
to join the National. A subscription to the IPMS/USA
Journal comes with membership. Remember, National
Convention Contest entrants must be National mem-
bers in good standing.
Speaking of the National Convention being held
this summer in Loveland, Colorado, one of the ben-
efits of National membership that I’ve come to enjoy,
is the training offered at each National Convention in
evaluating/judging plastic models. In addition, the
National publishes a Judges Handbook that lists in
detail the criterion on which models should be evalu-
ated. All prospective judges should find this handbook
to be required reading.
Exchange model club newsletters arrived this
month or last from IPMS/Lakes Region, IPMS/ “Butch”
O’Hare ( I enjoyed seeing and talking with your mem-
ber, Steve, at GNH on Friday, June 28), IPMS/Will-
Cook, IPMS/GTR, 4-M, the Winnebago Auto Modelers,
the Auto Modelers Group, and from Bill Conley of the
Upper Peninsula Scale Modelers. Many of these news-
letters have been expanded in size to the point where
printing them out for perusal at the club meetings is
just too expensive. So, those of you who wish to see
these newsletters should send me an email listing the
newsletters you would like to receive via email and I
will see what I can do for you.
I received a copy of the Spring 2013 Anchor News
from the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc.
I will have this issue on my table at the July General
Meeting.
The July 2013 Squadron Flyer arrived via Pony
Express yesterday. Featured on the cover is the new
1/16th scale PzKpfw38 (T) Ausf.E/F targ . . . I mean,
tank. This kit has been marked down from $199.99
to $107.99 for the month of July only. Also shown
this month are two new ship kits from Trumpeter in
1/350th scale: the HMS Dreadnought 1915, and the
USS Indianapolis CA-35 1945. The Dreadnought is
marked down from $71.99 to $64.79 and the India-
napolis is down from $79.99 to $71.99.
WHAT??? You want an airplane quote from the
flyer too??? OHH-KAY! Trumpeter’s 1/32nd scale P-
51B Mustang III is down from $88.99 to $80.09. Are
you happy now?
Having finished my 32nd scale Tamiya Long Range
Mustang, I am now working on the 32nd scale Trum-
peter P-47D “Dorsal Fin” to eventually be finished in
the markings of “The Down Necker”, a P-47D-23-RA
of the 368th FG and flown by Bob Hellwig . . . mark-
ings by Kits-World War Birds which are distributed by
Sprue Brothers . . . Thanks, Chris!

Five members and one guest attended the June business meeting. The main topic of discussion was the agenda for the next few meetings. The July meeting will feature a theme display. The theme will be Monogram kits. Any model produced from a Monogram kit fits the criteria. Also Jay Wich-mann is planning on showing some pictures of the historic ships of San Francisco taken on a recent trip to the area. We should also have a door prize or two to give away. After the success of our last build it at the meeting we have decided to do it again at the August meet-ing. Too hot to build models? Bring your latest project to the August meeting and work on it there. You are
encouraged to walk around the room and see what the other members are working on and ask questions about their techniques and processes. Paul had an update on the possible display for the War Memorial. See his column for more information. That’s it for this month. See you at the meeting

There were 51 model Information cards filled out. Please make sure you fill out the Model Information cards. Please fill them out clearly. I enter what I can read and my eyes aren’t what they used to be. Also please leave them on the display table. The format of this list is: Modelers name, Item being displayed, Kit Manufacturer and Scale.
Editors Note: In an effort to show more club models I have added more pages of finished models. If you do not see your model it is because I could not see the name card associated with the model in the photo.

Monogram Night!Friday, July 12!
Monogram, that great, classic American model kit manufacturer produced great plastic kits of our favorite subjects through the last six decades. Let’s salute Monogram by bringing in our built models (and bring in the boxtops, too!) at the July meeting!
