VOLUME 41 ~ ISSUE 4 ISSUED 4 TIMES PER YEAR OCTOBER/DECEMBER 2011 WYSU presents County Mayo COUNTY MAYO oin WYSU on Friday, November 4 at the Lemon Grove Café from 6:30–9:00 pm as we present County Mayo for the 2011 Folk Festival Concert. Bill Davis, Marcy Dubec, Bill Lewis and Ted Miller make up County Mayo. Bill Davis comes from a long line of singers and musicians. As a child, he and his sisters staged elaborate musical shows in their parents’ kitchen. While serving in the navy, he learned to play the guitar and developed a strong love for traditional ballads (which he sang with gusto.) His skills with the banjo, mandolin and fiddle were acquired later. Bill played in e Shanachies for a time. He now sings leads and harmonies. Marcy Meiers grew up listening to her mother’s a capella singing and her father’s guitar-accompanied ballads. She played the concert flute as a child and was a member of the Warren, Ohio Jr. Military Band. At a Wolfe Tones concert she attended in high school years she became enchanted by the complexity, strength and beauty of traditional Irish reels, hornpipes and songs. She taught herself to play the tin whistle and the bodhran and studied music at Gormanston College in Ireland. While attending Youngstown State University she became a founding member of e Shanachies. Bill Lewis studied orchestral brass and woodwind instruments in grade school, but was always drawn to other musical forms, from blues to jazz, to country, swing and folk—an attraction that proved irresistible. French horn and trumpet gave way to guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle. Sousa and Schubert surrendered to Pete Seeger, the Kingston Trio and the Clancy Brothers. Bill has played in several folk groups in the Eastern Ohio region. Folk Festival Concert 2011 At the age of two, Ted Miller would sing to visitors and relatives who came to the family home. He would listen when the adults gathered around the piano for a song at family gatherings. At parochial school he learned all of the Irish American songs that were sung on St. Patrick’s Day. In later years, he developed a taste for folk music, but a particular love for the more traditional Irish ballads and a knack for the sea shanties and humorous song. He has a versatile, powerful baritone voice, which is perfectly suited to every type of Irish song. e members of County Mayo search through dusty old library stacks, pour over old tomes, listen to old recordings and work with older traditional musicians in their search for rare and unusual versions of songs. ey frequently Please RENEW NOWto support WYSU programming, and for continued shorter fund drives. or more than 40 years WYSU has provided quality programming to its listeners, including the finest in jazz, classical and folk music, news from NPR, and diverse and educational programming covering an array of pertinent subjects. Recently WYSU created a forum for community leaders to come together to discuss global and national issues, many of vital concern to the area. WYSU’s Looking Out approaches issues from often unexplored angles, where a moderator and panelists sit in a round-table configuration for a frank but respectful exchange of ideas. Under the guidance of WYSU director Gary Sexton and associate director David Luscher, station intern John D. Matthews is the program researcher and associate producer for Looking Out. With topic material covering subjects such as ecology, economy, foreign policy and education, the show’s format and approach gives new life to finding solutions, with content that is geared toward overturning the proverbial stone on a path less traveled. The host and moderator is Dr. George McCloud, Youngstown State University professor of communication, who has had extensive experience in foreign relations and journalism. Panelists for Looking Out include Youngstown City Clerk of Courts Sarah Brown-Clark, Dr. Paul Sracic, chair of YSU’s Political Science Department, and Andrea Wood, founder and publisher of The Business Journal. You can hear the show Friday nights at 7:00 pm with an encore on Monday evenings at 7:30 pm. All shows will be archived and available on the station’s web-site, http://wysu.org/focus.php.

om Zocolo’s interest in electronics predates his recollections. His mother says that as a toddler, Tom removed the backs from the televisions in the house to watch the glowing tubes. Fortunately, he was already bright enough to stay away from things that could hurt him, and he’s managed to stay out of serious trouble all of these years.Tom’s affiliation with WYSU began as a student board operator in the late ’70s while he was studying electrical engineering at Youngstown State University. In 1987 he accepted the title of assistant chief engineer, a part-time position he held for almost 25 years.  Tom’s professional journey has been a circuitous one. He served as chief engineer for Mahoning Valley Cablevision, worked as an independent contract engineer, was involved in a family business, and for the past 13 years has held the full-time job of chief engineer for the ABC/CBS/Fox TV complex. One of his most impressive contributions there was to successfully combine all of the television services into one central location at the WKBN broadcast site, a feat that won accolades from management. Tom has given WYSU years of faithful service, and has always been ready to share his vast expertise whenever needed. We sincerely thank him for all of his invaluable help; we are the richer for it. Unfortunately

for us, we lost Tom’s position in this year’s budget cuts, but we won’t be entirely without his talents. He can usually be found (at almost any hour) at the 58-year-old WKBN complex, where WYSU’s main transmitter resides, and he has always been generous with his assistance. We wish Tom all the best!

F or 30 years, WYSU has been holding our semi-annual fund drives down to just 7 days, and we’ve always managed

to reach our goals. Other stations go 10 days, 2 weeks or more, and their drives just seem to get longer and more frequent.

Well, we’re out to reverse that trend. Instead of looking for ways to lengthen our drives, we’ve set our sights on shortening them. Again this fall, our fund drive

will span just 72 hours—from Tuesday afternoon, October 18th, through Friday, October 21st. And in that time we hope to raise $115,000. It sounds daunting, but you’ve risen to every

single challenge so far, and we know you will this time, too.

How can you help? By making your fall contribution today! Please complete the contribution form below, and mail it, along with your check or credit card information to:

WYSU-FM • One University Plaza • Youngstown, OH 44555

If you prefer, you can instead give on-line by visiting our website wysu.org. Moreover, when you give on-line this fall, your gift will go that much further thanks to a partial match of all web pledges by fund drive sponsor IDMI.net!

Note: Your early gift to WYSU will not only help our fall fundraising efforts, it will also put your name in a drawing to win an ‘Early Bird Prize Package’ we will draw for at the start of the fall drive, AND our Pledge Drive Grand Prize—two spots on an eleven day tour of Vienna, Budapest & Prague!

(No contribution necessary to enter prize drawings. Grand prize drawing will take place at 4 pm on 21 October 2011.)

love read-ing Cormac

McCarthy, but I couldn’t make

my goal of all 10 novels this summer.  As great as the novels are individually, their collective unrelenting bleakness and nonchalant violence got to be too much. I’ll finish them off during the winter when I really need something cheery.  In the meantime, I’ve been digging into The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey and The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris by David McCullough. The Greater Journey is an engaging backdoor history of 19th-Century United States, and Paris, through the eyes and experience of American artists (Morris, Healey, Cas-sat, Whistler), writers (Cooper, Stowe), doctors (Holmes, Sr.), politicians (Sumner), inventors (Morris) and others lucky enough to have extended educational residencies in Paris. Who knew anyone important went to Paris after Franklin and Jefferson and before Hemingway and Stein! —Gary

This is a chance to hear Weber’s atmospheric drama in its fascinating arrangement by Hector Berlioz, who set the spoken dialogue to music and included his own, brilliant orchestration of Weber’s famous “Invitation to the Dance.”

10/10 Verdi: Rigoletto. Chorégies d’Orange Festival (Orange, France); National Orchestra of France; Roberto Rizzi Brignoli, conductor. It takes genius like Verdi’s to successfully combine true, heartfelt sentiment in the love between father and daughter, with over-the-top passion and appalling violence. Rigoletto has all of that, in spades.

10/17 Rossini: Moses in Egypt. Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro; Bologna Municipal Theater Orchestra and Chorus; Roberto Abbado, conductor. To skirt the official prohibition of opera performances during Lent, Rossini came up with an operatic take on the biblical story of Moses and the exodus from Egypt, complete with the parting of the Red Sea, as in Hollywood’s The Ten Commandments.

10/24 Gounod: Faust. Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Evelino Pidò, conductor. Goethe’s immortal drama, with it’s legendary deal with the devil, has been adapted in countless ways, from symphonic poems to rock musicals, but few if any can match the power and romance of Gounod’s opera.

10/31 Gluck: Telemaco. 2011 Schwetzingen Festival; Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Basel Theatre Chorus; Anu Tali, conductor. Gluck was among the most influential composers in the history of opera. This opera is something of a rarity, but Gluck thought highly enough of its music to resurrect some of its finest numbers for use in both of his popular Iphigenie operas.

11/7 Menotti: The Medium, Saariaho: Émilie. Spoleto Festival USA, Charleston, SC; Joseph Flummerfelt, conductor (The Medium), John Kennedy, conductor (Émilie). Menotti’s early opera The Medium ran on Broadway for more than 200 performances in 1947-48. Émilie, by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, is a mesmerizing one-act, one-woman opera.

11/14 Verdi: La Traviata. Vienna State Opera; Betrand de Billy, conductor. This production stars the charismatic French soprano Natalie Dessay in the demanding role of Violetta, with rising star Charles Castronovo, a New York native, as Alfredo.

11/21 Dvorak: The Jacobin. Prague National Theatre. Tomás Netopil, conductor. Sometimes described as one of Dvorak’s most quintessentially Czech operas, this romantic drama portrays a father and son who are estranged by family intrigue and politics, then reconciled by the power of music.

11/28 wagner: The Flying Dutchman. Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London); Jeffrey Tate, conductor. The Royal Opera has assembled another top-notch cast for Wagner’s stormy drama of legendary determination, undeniable love, and ultimate redemption.

12/5 britten: The Turn of the Screw. Theater an der Wien, Vienna; ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra; Cornelius Meister, conductor. Based on a Henry James’s ghost story about two orphans tormented by seductive spirits, Britten’s opera goes beyond spooky to become genuinely disturbing.

12/17 Ponchielli: La Gioconda. Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus; Bruno Bartoletti, conductor. Ponchielli’s masterpiece, a drama of politics, passion and murder, is so over-the-top sensational that you can’t help but love it—one of opera’s most delicious “guilty pleasures.”

12/24 Rossini: La donna del lago. La Scala, Milan; Roberto Abbado, conductor. In 1819, Rossini cashed in on an Italian taste for all things Scottish with this overtly Romantic opera based on a story by Sir Walter Scott.

12/26 Rimsky-Korsakov: The Golden Cockerel. Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow; Vassily Sinaisky, conductor. This fairy-tale extravaganza is considered by some to be Rimsky-Korsakov’s finest work. Based on a poem by Pushkin, it’s a story of incompetent politicians and unfulfilled promises, featuring a doddering Tsar who is ultimately pecked to death by the opera’s glittering title character.
