The Severe March 7, 2016 storm From Wendell Harden, Gitana ~

If you were awakened by the early storm on March 7, you may be interested in these photos. They depict the storm and a major “cell” as it progresses from West to East (L to R) and then directly over Conejo Mountain at Camarillo Springs. I follow such activity on my internet devices when we have impending issues of potential debris flow. Explanation follows : 4:50am - The first screenshot shows the storm as it approaches the Ventura/Oxnard coast. 5:10am - The second screenshot shows the storm cell has formed as shown in yellow, as it passes over the Camarillo airport. 5:20am - The last screenshot shows the intensified (yellow and orange) cell as it passes over the mountain and my house (blue dot).Note the time progression and intensity scale at the bottom of the photos. Experience has proven that radar display of arrival time and speed of movement are precise indicators of what to expect from the storm, as indicated in real time. Beware, it can be pretty scary.

From Drake VanCamp ~ I received a call from a female resident on Paquita Street who related how she had been sitting in her living room chair enjoying the afternoon, and noticed a large lizard running up her wall. Oh my!! She was wondering if I might pop by and see what could be done to encourage her uninvited guest to depart. Also, his “indoor” manners were dreadful what with the scurrying about the walls and floor. The resident had smartly placed cloth throws over & around the base of a floorlamp after he scampered underneath. Sure enough, while I was reaching under the cloths, out burst a sizable alligator lizard bent on overstaying his visit. Fortunately, he was so big, he was also slow enough to be able to be hand caught in mid-stride, and placed outside. So, just a word out to watch your open sliders and such as our weather again warms. But call me at 796-0398 if needed for a rescue. All our animals love us, but sometimes a little too much.

~~Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner at “The Springs” Saturday, March 19, 2016~~ A wonderful and delicious dinner was catered by Country Harvest and 102 Springers and guests attended. As they entered the Pete Tendas Room, the guests were greeted with beautiful music by our very own Springs residents Clair Curry and Evelyn Stevens. They played fabulous Irish music during the evening. Thank you both so much. There were twelve lucky birthday winners who went home with our Irish centerpieces. I would like to thank our fabulous social committee for all their hard work: Judy Hyman, Judy Dale, Judy Krieger, Edith Hertenstein, Kathy Benioff, Joan Kellet, Jone Shively, Camella Moore, Marika Panczel, Lynn Lewis, Susan Spann, Gail Edwards, Mary Hall, Gale Driver, Jeri Cowley, Louise Purpura and John Wiley. A special thank you to our wonderful men who work so hard on all our events: Hal Hyman, Stu Krieger, Bogie Edwards and Bill Moore. Without these men these events would not be possible. Thank you to Lynn Lewis for making the lovely and creative name badges for all our events. Thank you to Marika Panczel for designing all our fabulous flyers for our events. Thank you to Edith Hertenstein for being our Awesome Mistress of Ceremonies. Thank you to Kathy Benioff, Gail Edwards, Susan Spann, and Gale Driver for making the beautiful centerpieces. We are most fortunate to have a very talented and creative social committee.

Please watch for our upcoming flyer for the “Pancake Breakfast” which will take place on Saturday, April 16, 2016.

This month’s book is The Necklace by Cheryl Jarvis. It is the true story of 13 woman from Ventura who together buy a very expensive diamond necklace they could not afford alone! The necklace comes to mean different things for different women and the act of sharing it leads them to share much more of their lives! Please join us for a lively discussion led by Phylis Mandel on Wednesday, April 19 at 10:00. Newcomers are always welcome! Our book for May will be the Memory Keeper’s Daughter.

Unfortunately, we didn’t reach the minimum number so our April Laughlin trip was cancelled. Those who did sign up indicated that they REALLY want to go so we may try again for a trip sometime in the fall. No other trips planned for right now but I’m sure we’ll come up with at least one or two day trips. Standby... If questions, contact Robbie Dornick (987-5779), Lynn Lewis (484-3881), Judy Dale (487-0685) or Judy Hyman (388-0055).
