Those who have passed

John "Jack" James Brennan, Class of 1947, was born in Los Angeles, CA to Walter and Mary Brennan on Christmas Day, 1928 passed away February 6, 2009. Jack graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in Los Angeles in 1947 after helping lead the Crusaders to their second CIF Championship in basketball. He re-ceived a scholarship to USC. Soon after he met and married Alverta Hein. 58 years, later, 5 girls, 4 boys, 26 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, sons and daughters-in-law and many friends, will miss him. A lover of all sports, golf was a game he enjoyed being able to play. What he lacked in his short game and putting he more than made up for with his monstrous drives, at times even surprising himself. Funeral mass was held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fountain Valley, CA.

Arthur (Art) Honer, Class of 1939, passed away January 29, 2009 after a long illness. He was 87 years old. Art was a Korean War veteran and worked for Mobil Oil for 34 years. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kitty; his sister, Dorothy McDonald; his brother, Richard Honer, Class of 1944; and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a devoted Catholic and long-time member of St. Margaret Mary Church, Lomita, CA.

Tom Baumgartner, Class of 1950

After graduation in 1950, I joined the US Navy Reserve and was called to active duty in 1951. I attended service school in San Diego, whereupon I was assigned to the USS Southerland (DDR 743) for several tours in Korean waters. I was released from active duty in October 1953. I mar-ried Nancy Eaton from St. Anselms & Bishop Conaty HS (Class of 1952) in November1955. We

have 5 children (3 boys; 2 girls) and fourteen grandchildren (7 boys; 7 girls). I attended El Camino College and Loyola University part time while working for Chevron in a variety of mar-

keting assignments. My last assignment for Chevron was at Headquarters in San Francisco. I retired in the fall of 1992 after over 41 years of service and returned to Southern California and

settled in the city of Orange.

Current activities are trying to play golf, traveling and enjoying kids and grand-kids. I was a member of the MCAF board from its inception until early in 2007.

My connection to Mt Carmel and the Carmelite priests and brothers dates from 1940 when my older brother Bruce, class of 1944, started at Mt Carmel. Both of

my parents were very active in supporting the school from the beginning. Another brother, Jim followed me at Carmel and graduated in 1954.

Bruce passed away in January 1995 and Jim passed away in December 2006.

Diamonds Are A Boys Best Friend By John Martin. The year 1968 was a memorable year for me personally. I sur-vived the draft during the Vietnam War and was honorably dis-charged from the Army. I returned home and married my high school sweetheart from St. Mary’s Academy. Others might recall that Martin Luther King was assassinated, and President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, or that Wil-liam Styron won the Pulitzer Prize for The Confessions of Nat Turner. Then there are some who might recall that in baseball, the pitcher’s mound was dropped from 15” to 10”, and the Detroit Tigers won The World Series.Fewer may recall that tiny Chapman College in Orange, California won the NCAA Divi-sion II National Championship in baseball. I wonder what were the odds that year on Chapman, or the possibility that team would have three Mt. Carmel Crusaders from 70th and Hoover who would help create the magic and bring home the trophy. In the spring of 1968, three young Crusaders walked onto that dusty diamond in Orange, never realizing that their lives would forever be tied to that single season and their shared passion for the game of baseball. Bob Zamora MC’64, was a senior and already a campus legend. Chuck Stone MC’67, was a freshman that had only re-cently found the cafeteria. John Young MC’67 was a freshman walk-on. He was on campus with a scholarship to play basketball. He wandered onto the diamond one spring day and was invited to try-out. The rest as they say is history. Bob was drafted by the Padres after graduation and would eventually be enrolled in Chapman’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He bounced around professional baseball for a few years, fell in love with Cindy, had three children, and then decided to settle down. A new high school had been built in south Orange County. He was an experienced Spanish teacher and coach, so he applied. Capistrano Valley High School has only had one baseball coach in its 32 year history. The school’s baseball field is named in his honor…Bob Zamora Field. Bob has profoundly influenced hundreds of young men and women over the years sharing his love of learning and his passion for the game of baseball. His teams have won several C.I.F. titles. His son Pete, after graduating from U.C.L.A., played ten years in the Angels organization. Many times I have come across ball players from Capo Valley. When I ask if they know Bob Zamora they always beam, then genuflect.

John and Chuck were 19 years old, and on the top of the world with their shiny new national championship rings. Zamora had just been drafted, so the two young world shakers came up with a plan of their own. They decided to quit Chapman and enroll in commu-nity colleges, where NCAA rules would allow them to be drafted at the end of the next season. John Young ended up at Fullerton College, and was drafted by De-troit the following year. School would have to wait.

Chuck would try his luck at East Los Angles College. He did well, but was not drafted. He must have been extremely disappointed, but filled with faith he prayed for direc-tion. The Lord does work in mysterious ways. Chuck decided to stay close to home and enrolled at Cal State Northridge. In 1970 Northridge won the NCAA Division II Na-tional Championship. The once sad and lonesome Stone, weighted down with another shiny championship ring, was drafted by Detroit and found himself back with his old Crusader buddy, John Young. The two Crusaders from the class of 1967, like their baseball brother Bob, would spend the next 40 years playing, coaching, scouting, mentoring, and sharing their passion for the game of baseball with countless youngsters. I recently saw Chuck at an awards banquet. I had not talked to him in at least 20 years, and as is the case with most Mt. Carmel alums, it seemed more like a matter of months. He is as pleasant and charming as ever, and looks fit enough to play. We laughed and reminisced. He shared his love and appreciation for his Carmelite education. We were talking about Bro. Lawrence and Fr. Gus Carter when he unbuttoned his shirt and pulled out his brown scapular. It was a very touching and proud moment for this old Crusader. This March, Chuck Stone will be enrolled in Cal State Northridge’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He is Executive Vice Presi-dent of CAPS Sports Foundation, Inc. in Beverly Hills, an education based non-profit connected to baseball. During seventh inning stretches, John completed his degree, and graduated from Auburn University in 1978. John’s love for the game of baseball was nearly overwhelming. He often returned to the old neighborhood, and was sadden and con-cerned that the diamonds where he spent so many carefree days in is youth were now in the possession of gangs and drug dealers. Every base was stolen, and there were no coaches willing to sacrifice their lives, no money and no sponsors. Baseball had left the cities and relocated in the suburbs. John had a dream. He did months of research and compiled mountains of data. He took the stats and business plan for an education based non-profit to the Mayor’s office, the Chief of Police, the Los Angeles Dodgers as well as major corpo-rate sponsors. His foundation would be called R.B.I. (for Return Baseball to the Inner-city). After receiving their sup-port, he created a program using baseball as a catalyst for engaging young boys: to encourage them in school through tutoring and mentoring in safe environments, and playing baseball would be the reward. The City wanted the parks back and the police wanted the bad guys. John executed a perfect squeeze play showing MLB that the number of African-Americans making it to The Bigs had declined 60% in a 10 year period. Things went well, and John’s dream came true in 1993, after four years practicing every major league baseball organiza-tion adopted his R.B.I. and made it their own. Today John Young MC’67, is founder and C.E.O. of MLB/RBI. Twenty years later there are nearly 200,000 boys playing baseball and girls playing softball in his program. Former U.C.L.A. All-American/Olympian, Natasha Watley (an Al Dugard MC’50 protégé from Woodbridge High in Irvine) has stepped up to the plate helping John continue to develop and expand the girls softball program. Today a dozen major league stars are alumni of the R.B.I. The poster child for MLB/RBI is a Los Angeles native and Boston Red Sox super star, Coco Crisp, from the very diamonds that John reclaimed. Next Fall, Kenji Corbisiero, from Crenshaw High in South-Central, and Melissa Perez, from Garfield High in East L.A., will head East to attend Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. under the benevolent eye of President Dennis J. Murray MC’64. MLB/RBI will provide partial academic scholarships for the two students. These diamonds are three of many from Mt. Carmel’s rich legacy.

St. Raphael’s Dedicated Centerpiece

of Prayer Garden to Mount Carmel High School On Saturday, April 25th Fr. Tracy O’Sullivan O.Carm., pastor of St. Raphael’s Parish, and John Keenan, class of ’48, wel-comed several Mount Carmel alumni and other friends to the Prayer Garden at St. Raph-ael’s for the dedication of a new centerpiece monument. The monument, underwritten by Keenan and his brother Michael, class of ‘56, features a rendition in bronze of the entrance to Mount Carmel High School, based on artwork created by Earl Ludwig, class of ’45, who was in attendance. It is implanted in a handsome Carmel-brown pedestal and topped with a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. One side of the pedestal features a plaque engraved “Mt. Carmel High School, 70th & Hoover, 1934 – 1976. On the other side is a plaque that states that the monument was dedicated to Fr. Rich-ard Nagle by the Mt. Carmel Alumni Foundation. John H. W. Martin, MCAF board mem-ber, represented the foundation for the dedication.

The dedication ceremony began with mass, con-celebrated by Fr. Tracy and by Fr. Albert Koppes, O.Carm., the former superintendent of high schools for the Carmelites, and, for the last 35 years, Assistant Chancellor of Loyola Marymount University. Since he's not a Jesuit, this is quite an achievement! After the mass, Fr. Tracy spoke about the history of the Prayer Garden, which features seven statues honoring the different ethnic cultures of his parish. He stated that he is pleased to now have a Mount Carmel monument as a reminder of the great school that existed right down the street. As some may not know, the Carmelite Order sent Fr. Tracy to California in 1976, slated to be Mount Carmel High School’s next principal, before plans for closure were considered. The dedication ceremony coincided with the ninth anniversary of the passing of MCAF’s beloved Fr. Richard Nagle, O.Carm., the founder of Padre Golf. Fr. Tracy also spoke of his friendship with Fr. Nagle, the many years Fr. Nagle stayed with him at St. Raphael’s while he was working on the golf tournament, and how they became such good friends. Fr. Tracy then introduced John Keenan, class of’’48, who gave some of the history of what has now become the Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation. John explained that in 1986, Fr. Nagle called a group of alumni of Mount Carmel Los An-geles together for dinner in a fish restaurant in San Pedro, and explained the need for fundraising to provide for the re-tirement and medical care of the Carmelites who taught us. Plans were made for the first Padre Golf tournament, which was held in 1987. Dick O'Brien, class of ‘45, also spoke about that first dinner meeting where over $65,000 was pledged by different alumni. Each attendee received a brochure featuring a photo of the bronze plaque and a reproduction of the painting by Mr. Ludwig from which the bronze was taken. Barbara Curtis, principal of St. Raphael's School supplied refreshments for the attendees after the ceremony. Also, a group of 18 met after the ceremony at George Petrelli's Steak House in Culver City; the din-ner was hosted by John Keenan class of 48.

St. Raphael’s is offering a limited edition of engraved brass plates beginning at $250. These will be personalized with the names of donors or their loved ones and permanently affixed to the Mount Carmel High School Monument. For more information, please contact John Keenan at (310)212-0363 x 2200 or [email protected].

Mt. Carmel Friends,

Several years ago Father Nagel approached me to inquire about having a picture painted of our former Alma Mater, Mt. Carmel High School. Surprisingly he said he had no photo of the school, which had since been torn down! It was suggested that there might be a picture in one of the former graduating class annuals. After researching and calling different alumni friends, someone found one that had a black and white photo on its introductory cover page. For me to add color to the painting was not difficult as the Spanish architecture of the building was common in Los Angeles. Father Nagel was so pleased with the finished painting he said I should get some indulgences from the Lord. The expression on his face was all I needed. The painting was auctioned off and the monies were donated to the Padre Golf Tournament. Later, it was transported to the retired Carmelite priest’s home in New York, where it hangs today. Father Nagel said they were extremely happy with the memories their “school picture” gave them. Thank you for all you’ve done to keep Mt. Carmel alive and well remembered. Earl Ludwig Class of 1945
